  • The new C1 Plus from Profoto is a high quality, handheld flash and continuous light unit that syncs perfectly with your smartphone. We took it out for a test run in the streets of New York City to see how this light performs. We also take a quick look at the Profoto C1. Both models work with your smartphone and are great for photographers and content creators looking for easy-to-use portable lighting solutions.

      No, because I literally use a 75 dollar copper Nichia 219b flashlight that fits in my pocket that has 4000k to help me take photos in low light and I already have a Profoto A1 that does what I need it to do.
      It's a cool solution nonetheless, but I can't see Profoto justifying the premium when the competition from Godox is so strong and less than half the price in comparable solutions.

      I was lucky enough to find one (c1) for £88 recently. It was a display model. I agree it is priced a lot but it’s unbelievable how great your pictures can come out if you fiddle it right. Price is even worse now because of its rarity. It’s around £600 but there’s isn’t anything else like this. This flash does bring out your iPhones true potential. I love it.

    Great little device. But it needs some sort of a stick and/or an assistant, otherwise as many pointed already - the photos look like they were taken with an on-camera flash. If it was raised on a stick above the model's head - we would be looking at completely different, much better pictures (in spite of it's a small harsh modifier).

      I think it's more an issue w/ the photographer than the light.
      The light itself looks solid but overpriced by like 450 dollars.
      If they made a ton of these and just sold them for a lot less, they would sell more and make a lot more money. The biggest issue that Profoto faces is that they do not possess the capability to handle high volume support. Profoto, while a global business, has a very small support staff.

    This issue with this light, is that it’s being used as a main light. Everyone who’s ever touched a camera knows that direct small light is going to be harsh and unflattering. This video clearly shows that in every sample photo. Now using this light as a fill, hair or kicker light would be something to think about, but using it for you phone as “flash” is a clear gimmick. The price is what will keep a lot of the Smart Phone amateurs out. To keep it simple you don't want everybody to be able to buy the product. However, I can see the benefits especially when it comes to fill lighting and back lighting.

    Interesting concept - pretty niche market for people sophisticated enough to want to use off-camera flash, but not sophisticated enough to bring a better camera/lens... The demo images are NOT very good- not much better than what one could obtain with the iPhone flash IMHO. A bit more sophisticated light placement- and maybe a 2nd unit - could have shown off the C1 to better advantage.

  • @rfdphoto
    @rfdphoto 5 лет назад +1

    Not exactly the solution for better photos on a smart phone, as many have commented. However, keep in mind ,the C1 is about 10 times bigger than that little harsh LED that is next to the lens of the phone camera, meaning the light will be more flattering than the bare LED. So in that regard, it is definitely better than what the alternative would have been had there not been an extra light. Definitely not something to be used professionally though, which means this is for selfie-lovers and amateur instagram models. In that regard, I think Profoto has grossly overpriced this.
    And making us pay an extra $200 for a tripod mount and air connectivity....? That's pretty money hungry of you Profoto.
    From a professional standpoint, I think it would be cool to have 3 or 4 of these in the camera bag to use in interior shots, where a little extra light here and there would bump the image to the next level. However, the same can be accomplished with a few older model speedlights such as the Nikon SB-80 which slaves, is very durable, and costs less than half of one C1.
    Final thought, if you're going to care enough about the photos you are taking with your phone to carry the extra bulk and weight of a C1 (or 2 C1s), why not just bring an actual point and shoot camera, which will produce better images than a smart phone camera any day of the week, and will allow you to actually edit them in photoshop. That or bring a small mirrorless DLSR and small flash. Size and weight increase would be minimal compared to carrying a C1, but the benefits would be tremendous.

When you're out and about and not wanting to drag along your DSLR and all it's accessories, it's the next best thing and with your snobby pro attitude (why were you even here?) about it you will ultimately be left behind. I have a photographer friend, who shall remain nameless, an actual professional in HI, who said he's using the iPhone 14 Pro Max in nearly half of his work and I'm not exaggerating. I might suggest checking out the iPhone Photography School with Emil Pakarklis. It's a fabulous program. I wonder how many of those once-in-a-lifetime shots you've missed because of snobbery.

      If that light from the DIY store doesn't have Profoto writen on it then what ever you shoot doesn't count as photography 🤷🏾‍♂️.

    Over-priced, unnecessary toy for gadget and tech-hungry amateurs. There are fabulous lights for a fraction of this price which are WAY more powerful, versatile, and controllable from the light unit itself. Needing to waste time going into a menu on a phone to adjust the color/output? Silly.

    3:40 creating professional photos? You gotta be kidding... these photos shown look do not even look close to professional.
