Anyone that tells you to ignore your credit card payments because they'll just 'eventually stop calling' wants you to fail at life. Tune those people out.
If your credit is already below 600 you have no assets or garnishable wages then they're not wrong. It's not a one size fits all advice but if you do your research you find out what your options are. But most debts are only enforceable within a certain timeframe as well.
@a.graham_arts7359 but they're not fixing the habit and will do it again until they can't... for example some apartments won't rent to you if you have bad credit. So what? Now you're stuck leaching off mom and dad for life... kinda scummy

They don't. My MIL is 70s now. We had to purchase a place for her to live she owed back pay in rent for the lot and still owes property taxes on the property she gave up. She doesn't always pay use the month rent which is only the HOA fee and water bill not even actual rent. She lives on a island gave us no choice but to buy a place for her or move her stateside and live with us (not an option at all) which she hasn't been in well over 20 years. We at least look at it that eventually we can rent the place and make money and we are not owing 1k plus for her to live somewhere we would have to rent for her. At this it's costing us living in a townhouse vs buying a larger place. These people don't change.

My child is in second grade (age 7 going on 8), and I've been explaining finances to her for the past year. She fully understands that when I say no to something, it's not because we can't afford it, it's because we're choosing to spend it on something else.
I think I figured out why the guests don't know how much they spend every month. Because they don't see putting money on the credit card as spending they only see the payment as much money spent. They put $100 on the credit card and then make a $10 payment and say I only spent $10. Or at least I assume that is how the show is calculating the numbers and why it is so often drastically different.
I think you're right. As people get overwhelmed and lose track, that spending kind of disappears because it's not cash going to a specific transaction. I can see that I do that too! I write down everything I purchase but when I add up where my actual "real" money goes, that cc spending just slides under the radar but of course is costing interest and making everything worse. This might be obvious to many, but those who are really messed up in this process miss things like this (which is why their finances are messed up etc ) Thanks for this insight!
I think it’s a combo of that and just not having any kind of a budget and mindlessly swiping their credit cards on bs spending and having no clue how much they really spend.
They also just don't look at anything. They go through life with blinders on, and never look at a single statement or account. Just swipe swipe swipe, "oh that card got declined, must be maxed, better use a different one or get another"
Went to Starbucks this morning with some friends and I didn't buy anything! Made some coffee at home instead! Thanks Caleb for helping me stay in my budget!
As a Hispanic, I'm sick and tired of these Tortas feeding their kids McNuggies all the time. I really hope her 9 year old isn't pushing 180lbs. Lazy lifestyle leads to lazy finances.
Agreed, also as a hispanic person. It’s insane the things I got fed as a kid. Super unhealthy and sets the kid up for a bad future relationship with food.
That "savings club" thing is a big part of Mexican culture, I know them as "tanda". My mom would go into those all the time when I was a kid, and yes, there was always drama about someone not paying. It stems from a lack of discipline, and a lack of financial education. I would stay faaaaaar away from those kinds of groups. It can get messy very quickly, and with no legal backing, you could be screwed out of a lot of money if you're one of the last numbers in the list.
Pinches "cundinas" 🙄 Our Mexican elders need to break this money ignorance and bad money management habits. I have family that "don't believe in banks, porque me van a robar mi dinero" (oh.....god 🙄 pinche no tienen nada en que caerse muertos 🤣🤣🤣) and just stash 💵 in random places and live in fear of being robbed and literally are prisoners in their "homes" for the fear of someone finding/stealing their stash. What's stopping the first person getting paid out that lump sum from not leaving the group after only contributing like 50 bucks? lol doesn't make sense
That’s how my mom got her second house. It’s a ge in Korean. It was huge amounts of money. Something like 5k a month with a payout of 80k. And this was in the late 1980s. And, yes. There were stories of people disappearing with the money. That’s why you had to trust everyone and build your reputation up.

Its the fact that the second she said "we have a group of people and we each get a number" and I immediately knew what she was talking about...... Listen......Tandas are HUGE in Latino communities.... Caleb's absolutely right, that saving 50 a week on your own is just as efficient but there's a crazy sense of accountability for hispanics when it comes to the tanda that I will never understand..... I remember as a kid asking my parents what happens if someone can't pay their share for the week and they would just say "no, that just doesn't happen." I can totally see why someone would think its risky to participate in but my grandma is 73...... she has never seen someone not pay their weekly share. Im sure there are others that may have had different experiences though. Idk, the tanda is like..... sacred. But anyways, its always funny to see other people's reactions when they learn about it because they have no idea how NORMAL it is for us....
They have the same in Korean communities. There is a social aspect. There is food. Conversation. If you don’t pay, you cut off your entire social world. and your family.
It’s popular in many communities around the World, I get Caleb’s point of view, mathematically it doesn’t make sense, but for low income people, it does help have a sort of savings being considered as a due payment, which does have its benefits.
@@Nounooon there are several systems where it acts not only as savings. It investment. There are some societies where banks are either not trustworthy or not accessible by certain groups.
Two things from an experienced mom and a psychological therapist One: you have to start delayed gratification, patience, and being dissatisfied EARLY. We start this in the 2s. Store trips with specific direction on the way that we aren’t there to buy toys, it’s not in the budget and/or, I HEAR that they want them, it’s okay to like things, but we cannot get them just because they want them. We also give them chores starting at 3. Our oldest will shovel, rake, pick up sticks, and sweep sidewalks to buy cars/RC/or special art stuff. We still take them all to the store to continue to build on the skill of DELAYED GRATIFICATION. We let them take pictures of toys they want & magically some of them end up in their stocking, for their birthday, or Christmas. We also don’t buy anything outside of special circumstances as the aforementioned. You are the parent but you don’t have to be demeaning, physical or hateful telling your kids no. You want stuff too. Empathize with that and still say no. Second: I can’t imagine having zero drive to get a better job. Why isn’t she CONSTANTLY hunting to make more? Doing a side hustle from home? Nothing? Her parents are kid 60s & still working, I guarantee they’re not well off & are struggling too; this is generational. Work ethic is 100% genetic. BUT you BUILD it if it is not already engrained. Just like healthy eating, it’s our job as parents to tell our kids “no, you’re not getting trash food”. While still allowing them to”junk” food that is not straight up trash for their actual health. Add don’t subtract. Add fruit to their brownie snack. Add some broccoli chips to their handful of dark chocolate chips. You get it. We give sweets with their other food; it takes the stigma away from food being a reward or a treat. We really have to do better for our kids. This is terrifying. YOU ARE THE PARENT, but you can love them with compassion & understanding instead of ruling them with an iron fist.
been dealing with hurricane weather the past two days but weather is finally letting up and now i get to watch a friday sweet treat, today is a good day
15 minutes in and I can't stand this woman. Won't tell her kid no. Doesn't know how much money she makes. Doesn't know how much money she spends. Unbelievable.
Right! I’m living with my parents after a hard time (I’m in my 30s), but I pay them rent, and have been working on my situation. Out of student loan trouble (I was 6 months behind) consolidated my debt and have been dumping a bunch of money into it. Even though I’m doing good, I just applied for a night job last night. She’s not really trying.
I make less than her (grad student) and live in Edinburg TX. I have an apartment - don’t stay with parents. No debt. I don’t have kids - so that makes it easier. But cost of living here is LOW. It’s super manageable to live here.
A nine year old child should not be having tantrums. Something tells me her son is likely obese, too. He's probably learning from her to find comfort in food.
💯 agree. "he's too small to understand" um no. 5yo can understand, 7yo can understand, 9yo is way past understanding age. Unless he's on the spectrum or something.
Having that conversation with a kid is going to be hard, because I grew up in a low income household with two working parents and all I ever heard was ‘we don’t have money’ or ‘we can’t afford our mortgage’. Those words made me so anxious growing up and as an adult I feel guilty spending money and am always afraid of not being able to afford necessities even though I’m the most financially secure I’ve ever been. I don’t envy this woman for having to have that conversation with her kid. Hopefully she finds the right words.
Anxiety is an issue but I'd take that over the existential financial disasters these people sleepwalk into. My parents were not poor just frugal, I have similar feelings about discretionary spending to overcome now that I can afford it.
Lots of people grew up hearing "no" and it didn't Kickstart anxiety. However, there's always multiple ways to say the same thing. Parents could say, "I like McDonald's too, but I think we should spend money on healthier food", "I know you want that toy, but I think I'd like to save that money for this year's (insert) presents"... You can wait until you start giving them chores and an allowance to have a more tailored conversation about what the family can or can't afford. Or... say "no" because that's life and they will be helped to get use to hearing it, lol.
Definitely a tough topic for young kids. I think emphasizing that it's a temporary situation helps. "We can't afford that at the moment" vs "We cant afford that"
My bf heard that growing up from his parents about how they couldn't afford things which him as a parent wants to give our boys everything they ask for. But since he works out of town I can control the finances a bit more by telling the boys " We can't afford that right now" even though we can but they have gotten slightly to spoiled and I'm trying to change that
My daughter is the same age as her son. Kids that age can understand way more than most people give them credit for. Parenting the child you created is not optional.
I was a single divorced mom of 2 littles, no child or family support, hard core university and grad program, 6 years finished in 4 years, while working mudnights and barely sleeping. I had to explain to my kids that we eat healthy and at home, and knce a month, we (they) can have McDonald or Taco Bell. They were 4 and five when I explained this. We made cookies once a week for when they wanted a sweet treat
no literally. i was 9 and in 3rd grade going to my school counselor crying about my parents fighting saying “we can’t afford rent, groceries, etc.” i wanted to help and almost never asked for anything until i realized we got to a financially stable place.

At 9 he is not too young to understand the idea of a budget. My 7 yo knows we have a budget that covers expenses like our mortgage and other needs and then we have a fun budget for wants and if we're out of fun money then she has to wait. Kids are smart. Just talk to them about it so you can set them up for their future

If I got takeout too it would be a mess... I want to come on here but I'm afraid to get roasted by Caleb for some of my fiancé's decisions. He does not want to come on the show.. because he knows what Caleb would say 😂
If done legally, it’s based on the non custodial parents income. No income or a cash job means no support gets paid. In CA I got max $400/mo for TWO kids. And one payment (mailed check) was, no lie, 24 CENTS in 2018. The postage cost more.
In court they also factor in the non custodial parent’s expenses. Gas, utilities, rent, insurance, car payments, monthly medications, groceries, etc. so if he filled out expense report he could have “proven” to the court that he could not afford a higher child support payment.
I'll never understand how people are out here working their asses off...while not having a clue how much they earn. Do they *ever* look at a pay stub?!
I think virtually everyone has the addition and subtraction skills to calculate inflows and outflows. They just choose to turn a blind eye to their finances. They don't want to know. It perpetuates a vicious cycle. I think more often the problems are conscious ignorance and not wanting to adult instead of lack of math skills. Plus, if you live with your parents, don't pay rent and don't pay for groceries, it is way too easy to stay a child
@@CalebHammer In all seriousness, thank you for calling out these parents who have nothing for retirement. I am currently experiencing this with a parent and it is frustrating.

For anyone wondering.. the savings group/ club at 53:27 is a tradition that occurs very commonly in Mexico among poor villages/towns. In those poor local economies, the objective isn’t prosperity but survival. Example : The towns baker isnt baking to get rich, just to get by and provide his services to the community. So say his oven breaks and costs 1k to repair. Its not realistic for him to save $50 a week until hes able to make the costly repair, as he+his family would sooner starve. (And the community be deprived of his services permanently.) Instead he can invest in the towns saving group (usually close friends/neighbors that depend/depend on each other for survival so its practically guaranteed that no one will leave the group prematurely) That way he collects in one week the 1k he needed to repair the oven and begin making an income again(and providing his services to the community). Then pay back the “loan” the following weeks to come now that he is working It would be a beautiful thing if the conditions werent so sad

Just wanted to say that a 9 year old should NOT be staying home alone. I know daycare is outrageously expensive, but leaving a child home alone is also not a good option. A teenager is a different story, but even then it should be on a case by case basis.
under what context? are you talking about for an 8 hour workday or just in general? maybe I had a weird childhood, but I asked to stay home when my parents went to the store ect.as a kid stay home and watch tv, play with toys or video games > go walk around the store. I can't remember exactly how old I was but I feel like relatively young I was capable of getting (though not cooking) snacks/food/water for myself and not doing anything too stupid to hurt myself.
Most children will *probably* be fine but the sad thing is that communities are not what they use to be. Predators look for latch key kids, kids with uncensored internet access, etc. when finding targets. Also, the brain development of a nine year is not the same as that of even a teenager. While a nine year old may be able to give the right answers about what to do in case of an emergency, the ability to think through those steps in an actual emergency (fire, break in, natural disaster) may be greatly decreased in the moment. Certain states will even send CPS to homes if they hear of children (younger than 12) being left alone because of tragic outcomes that have happened. In this woman’s case, I’d utilize free after school services in the community and save money/time off for when school is out on holiday to pay for a baby sitter some of the days and then try to use time off. It’s not ideal but it’s still cheaper than most paid for daycares year around.
@@j.asmrgaming1228 Growing up as a latchkey kid and a home body. I was preectly fine doing homework, and watching tv. Which going based on her kid sounds like they're fine with it.
In Minnesota children 8-10 can be left home alone for up to 3 hours. But like you said, individual circumstances still apply in the eyes of CPS and the law. 12 is a much more reasonable age to be able to handle that responsibility.
@Analova909 latch key kids have always got into trouble but today there's also the internet. Besides the world is a dangerous place. One family from when my kids were young lost all their 3 boys because they left popcorn in the microwave too long. Children are not equipped for emergencies.
We can tell you're white not a diss but in Hispanic household we are left alone at the tender age of 5 ...child neglect yes....bad parenting absolutely....does it save on child care also yes
Caleb’s big weakness in these audits is kids. He just has no idea what is available or what things cost. This is shown in him asking about free childcare and not understanding the struggle of school holidays. Also, kids need more of a budget for clothes and shoes, since they’re always growing.
Yeah, I am thinking he could do some sort of survey that way he could get an idea of how hard it is to climb out of a hole when you have childcare, lunches, copays, clothes, SHOES (omg how fast they grow out of shoes), medication, summer daycare, and all the other misc. Things that come up. I was able to only start pulling myself out of the hole once my daughter didn't need childcare anymore. It's rough out here, and it is hard to understand until you are in the thick of it.

😮 must be correct but that is scary

Two things from an experienced mom and a psychological therapist
One: you have to start delayed gratification, patience, and being dissatisfied EARLY.
I know that kids overweight just by listening to this. Unfair to the kid

I tell my kids I don't have the money for everything they want. I budget money for them so if they want something they can save up for it.
9 is absolutely not too young to understand the basic concepts of money AND nutrition.
I was a single divorced mom of 2 littles, no child or family support, hard core university and grad program, 6 years finished in 4 years, while working mudnights and barely sleeping. You’re probably right
At 9 he is not too young to understand the idea of a budget. My 7 yo knows we have a budget that covers expenses like our mortgage and other needs and then we have a fun budget for wants and if we're out of fun money then she has to wait. Kids are smart. Just talk to them about it so you can set them up for their future

I don’t have any kids, but $290 a month for a kid is ridiculously cheap. I refuse to believe she lets him get away with missing payments.
That's cheap.
true, but he may have OTHER kids he pays support for as well.

@AnalyticalMenace they definitely don't look at a pay stub
The biggest trend I see with your guests is that they have a lacking of math skills and their feelings about finances are what matter

A percentage of people doesn't think in words and sentences (I'm one of them). They still think, just differently.
It's very hard to explain, but I think without words. Like more conceptually, it just flows. I'm not talking to myself in my head, and was very surprised to find out that most people think that way.
Dunno if this is related, but I also can't envision things in my brain like others seem to be able to. When ppl say "imagine a red horse", I can't actually do that. I can't see the horse in my brain, I just have the concept of the red horse there.

How come we don't get taquitos anymore? 😢 Now it's just miscellaneous bs. 😅
Caleb got too traumatized by the return of Taquito Man.
(And the community be deprived of his services permanently.)
Instead he can invest in the towns saving group (usually close friends/neighbors that depend/depend on each other for survival so its practically guaranteed that no one will leave the group prematurely)
That way he collects in one week the 1k he needed to repair the oven and begin making an income again(and providing his services to the community). Then pay back the “loan” the following weeks to come now that he is working
It would be a beautiful thing if the conditions werent so sad

Natural selection
A 9 year old should not be home alone

@Analova909 latch key kids have always got into trouble but today there's also the internet. Besides the world is a dangerous place. One family from when my kids were young lost all their 3 boys because they left popcorn in the microwave too long. Children are not equipped for emergencies.
