I was diagnosed with 4th stage kidney failure...almost 9 years ago. Went vegan and my GFR came up to 36.Last year I went more whole foods and intermittent fasting. My GFR came up to 44!
I’m a huge fan of this channel. I appreciate the thought that it boils down to “progress over perfection.” I was enrolled in the CKDopps study and the plant-based, whole foods approach is keeping me going. I will watch this video again. Thank you!
I was using vegan protein powder twice a day and believe I got kidney stones from it. Maybe to much oxalates. I have shunned it ever since and since gone whole food plant based. Does look like I need to watch my portion sizes on beans. I was using Montmorency Cherry Juice or dried cherries and it seemed to cause problems (uric acid?) with kidneys or gout like symtoms. Could be just drink/eating too much at a time. Plan on eating fresh or frozen and watch my portion sizes better.
I’m a naturally very slim person and have been the same weights +/- 5lbs all my adult life. I’m currently Stage 3B, generally in good health an not diabetic. Hypertension is managed at 125/70 and prescribed dapagliflozin for about six months - eGFR has shown a little improvement and stable. My diet is now predominantly vegetable based protein ( I call myself an ‘Involuntary Vegetarian’ 😅) but I have lost 10lbs in the last twelve months. I’m 70 years but feel as if I’m heading into early sarcopenia even though I eat lots of carbs as well as my vegetables. Any ideas Dr Hasmi?
Generally in earlier stages (1-3a) protein is not as restricted as later stages. However, avoiding excessive protein intake is very important. Also, the quality of protein (plant vs animal) is important.
Protein is a complex matter. But generally speaking. We know that animal protein is not as healthy as plant protein. We also know that 7 out of 10 people who have or had cancer, their diet is the culprit. Furthermore, anything that comes from the cow contributes to incidence of cancer, that’s to include milk. Drive by a cow farm on a rainy day, and smell the stench and see how they live in their own excrement. It’s no wonder they have to inject them with antibiotics. We now have superbugs that are antibiotic resistant. The U.S. is approx. 4-5% of the world’s population, and yet we consume 70% of the world’s drugs! Big problem! They’re getting into our ground water and the molecules are so small, it is virtually impossible to filter them out. Long term use of any drug is not good. In many cases, they address one problem and create another, in turn we need more drugs to treat or just cover up the problems. It’s a vicious cycle. Are we the sickest country or what? Big pharma would like us to believe that, so they can sell us more drugs. Also, the food industry is directly responsible for this unhealthy mess we are in. So, if your not in good health, know and understand it’s not entirely your fault. Educate yourself then try and eat more RAW veggies and fruits. Because, anytime you cook food you change the molecules, in turn depleting nutrients. Look folks I’m a positive but pragmatic person. I see a bright future in healthcare, with the rapid advance of AI (artificial intelligence) which will transform our world (Socio-economic & political) beyond our imagination. Example: Deep Mind an AI company just revealed 200 million proteins! Huge bio-genetic breakthroughs are coming soon. Keep it simple folks, try and eat a bit less and focus on Raw veggies and fruits and take 3, 20-30 min walks a week. That’s it. And listen to Michele, she’s a smart lady.
I reversed my diabetes, lowered blood pressure, fixed my cholesterol, improved my HS symptoms, and improved my kidney function from stage 3 too stage 2 on a carnivore diet. plant based diet was slowly killing me.
@@lrksglobal742 i eat a ketovore diet that is about 10 carbs a day mainly the sauces have a carb or two. yes some times the protein lvl might be a little higher but my kidneys are improving. the protein in your urine does increase because you are eating more protein. it will lvl out. as for water intake i drink about 160 fluid oz a day with added salt/ or electrolytes. if you want to check out keto/carnivore i recommend Ken Berry
What about plant based essential amino acids. Do they yeild same metabolic waste as foods. Let's say they're pre digested essential amino acids supplements?
Is using ketoanalogues amino acid really effective in lowering creatinine? I am taking two tablets 3x a day, but I don't see any improvements with my crea results. It's still high 700+
We will be addressing ketoanalogues in an upcoming episode! Would definitely recommend working 1:1 with a renal dietitian if you're using KA though to ensure the diet and protein intake is where it should be.
I don’t currently have CKD but am a kidney donor and am curious to know if I should be limiting my protein intake (I’m trying to eat whole food plant based since the donation); my goal is to protect the one I have left. Any help is much appreciated.
Thank you for being a kidney donor! We have a couple episodes on solitary kidney. Being whole food, plant based is helping to protect your solitary kidney though! It is generally still best to avoid high/excessive protein intake since it increases renal blood flow and elevates intraglomerular pressure. But you likely wouldn't have to be low protein unless your labs were indicating stage 3+ CKD
I have protein in rfe urine. I just had a biopsy. I found out that the creatine is fine and there is no rejection. But there is no reason for the protein in the urine. I have eaten more animal protein. I want to know how I can get more information plant protein that doesn't have high in sodium. I am on prograf 1MG caps 3x2times a day and Cellcept 500MG tabs 1x2 times a day. Do you have any suggestions for me?
This is very difficult for me. I am the care giver for my husband, he has stage 4 kidney disease, he has protein in the urine, high potassium is high, I do not know how exactly to feel him.
Hello I have lupus nephritis & have protein in the urine, can this be caused by too much protein or inflammation? Because I feel I don’t eat a lot of protein.
I think I eat too little because I have not been to th e bathroom in a week, I eat whole fruit and whole veggies but apparently not enough fiber. I am getting so discouraged
Don't get discouraged! I would keep a food journal and meet with a renal dietitian so they can help individualize a plan/recommendations for you! Here is a link for a database: www.kidney.org/ckdrd
If a high protein/high calorie renal specific supplement is needed (sometimes for people on dialysis), it is ideal to make your own smoothie/shake with whole food ingredients. Kate Farms is a brand that uses better ingredients and has a renal option than Nepro in my opinion. But that does not mean Nepro cannot be used. Just depends on the person. Best to talk with your renal dietitian!
