I ate at the original Gazela the day that Anthony Bourdain passed away. He was a big influence on me going to Portugal and I remember feeling heartbroken walking in and sitting down at the bar. The guys poured me a beer, passed me a sandwich drizzled in that amazing chili oil and with the first bite I felt a warmth and comfort I will never forget. With tears running down my face one of the cooks asked me if it was ok, I responded yes! Then I just said Tony’s name. Dear Mike, Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your experience with us. We are Porto's longest-running Food Tour company and, over the past 11 years, we came out as the top pick for Porto Food Tours on Lonely Planet, The Guardian, and Parts Unknown by Anthony Bourdain. These big names do make us feel proud and we'll continue to promote our tours as widely as possible. But it's guests like yourself (and Mark Wiens), who spread the word, that have allowed us to succeed in our mission to help shine a light on Northern Portuguese gastronomy and Porto's food culture, in a socially responsible way. Should Porto be on your radar again, please know we would love the opportunity to host you once more. Until next time! Até à próxima!
I miss Europe so much. This video made me cry. Those sandwiches are such a work of art!!!!! There are people in the U.S who can make such sandwiches. UNFORTUNATELY, the average person in the U.S has no appreciation for such luxury. Which means that the world of sandwiches in the U.S is in limbo. It will take years for the average person in the U.S to be like the Portuguese seeing their food as a national treasure. Micah is such a grandma magnet. Ying has been so welcomed where ever she goes. You, Ying and Micah have been developing an extended family on an International level. Your videos are helping people adjust to the idea of travel. When friends of mine ask me who to watch, I point them to your videos. When my friends came back to the U.S, they told me that when they would drop your name, their faces light up, and my friends were treated so well. This makes your videos sort of a letter of introduction.
I'm Portuguese, so I want to add some things: We usually cook the collards in the caldo verde. Serving it raw, I guess it's something specific from that tavern. On the pot, at Casa Expresso, there were papas de sarrabulho and he said they're made with meat, not wheat. It's a type of porridge made with pig's blood, meat and corn flour. I'm a big girl and that was enough food for a couple of days. 😆 I don't know how you do it. I'm glad you enjoyed our food. You made me very hungry! Welcome to Porto, everyone!
For those that didn’t know, these two food guides are both from classic Bourdain episodes on Porto (Parts Unknown) and Bruno from Gazela was also in the episode. Great to see them all still showing off the amazing Portuguese cuisine and combined with Mark is a dream team!

As a moroccan in my opinion portuguese food is one of the best in the world its a perfect balance between fresh and warm and faty food. So thats why i love portuguese food and mexican , spanish , italian , lebanese and greek food very much

My Portuguese grandma from here in Hawai’i. Loved her some bread and ham with black coffee in the am. ❤
❤❤❤❤❤ PORTUGAL CARALHO 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
I'm Portuguese, so I want to add some things:
We usually cook the collards in the caldo verde.
Portugal is so incredible
I’m strongly tempted to buy a ticket to Portugal!
For those that didn’t know, these two food guides are both from classic Bourdain episodes on Porto (Parts Unknown) and Bruno from Gazela was also in the episode.
Great to see them all still showing off the amazing Portuguese cuisine and combined with Mark is a dream team!
Another excellent post, Mark! It’s always good to see your #1 companion, your wife, along with your handsome son, who, by the way, is growing up nicely. Continued Blessings to you and your family. Portugal appears to be a welcoming country, with good food and culture to share with the world 👍🏾
Thank you very much! Portugal is a fantastic country, and great people!
As a portuguese I'm glad you came back. The one video you had here I didn't feel did justice to our cuisine. All the best :)
Porto is one of my favorite destinations, especially for the food. Been lucky to visit twice so far and looking forward to next time 😄 happy to see you covering it Mark!
Great to hear that, it's a fantastic city!
Besides the wonderfull food, all Portugiese people look so warm and friendly! ❤ Can't wait to move to Portugal!!
What an incredibly beautiful city, and the people are so filled with joy.Maybe I should show this video to my Portuguese deli, and get them to make those fantastic sandwiches .
Xico dos Presuntos is on my street!! I cross that road every single day, I've been a big fan of Mark and his work for years and I can't believe I didn't bump into him 😭😭
Dude, u r a warrior. One francesinha fills me up for the whole day. U did that plus 10 sandwiches more ! 😅😅
10 minutes into it, and I love this André guy, such a gentleman and pure soul
Porto's big blazing guns here in this video, amazing delicious food and friendly people!
The guides have such good energy, amazing pick, glad you enjoyed Portugal!
When I want to cheer up myself I start to watch Mark's positive and atmospheric videos🤩
Such a beautiful city, Francesinha is just so good, everyone should try it!
Lovely to see you feature the food from my husband’s country. Portuguese cuisine is great comfort food and the people are so friendly and hospitable. The moment you walk into a Portuguese home, they will welcome you with food on the table, I matter how poor the family.
I think it's funny how andre kept warning mark about "spiciness" and as we know Mark loves spicy food.
The sandwich so big, it needs its own passport. Perfect for sharing, unless you're feeling particularly adventurous (and hungry). Kidding aside, this is exactly what I love the most when I visited Portugal on one of our TV show episode. Nostalgic!
Maaaark Portugal wonderful people friendly environment and the food looks so good keep up the good work mark I love watching mark every morning so relaxing his voice is very relaxing and informative
Thank you for your support!
@@MarkWiens no prob been a fan for 11 years and wish I could travel and do what you do but don't have the scratch to make that happen but it's ok cause I can live through you thank you mark your channel has been my therapy lol
As a moroccan in my opinion portuguese food is one of the best in the world its a perfect balance between fresh and warm and faty food. We moroccans dont have many fresh dishes almost everything is very oily or very sweet or very faty and for me a perfect cuisine must have a balance and must be easy on the stomick. So thats why i love portuguese food and mexican , spanish , italian , lebanese and greek food very much
Looolll, Moroccan cuisine is better then all of the above listed
@@iliasszekhnini5950 stop lying to yourself. You never travelled and tried food from other nations. You are just a poor moroccan living in morocco and speaking about things you have no idea what are you are talking about. Moroccans are not well educated you dont even know where canada is on the world map or what the capital is. And the proof that you dont even believe yourself is you give your own comment a like.
Must be easy on the stomach...for sure. That's why we love soups with most meals. We also like our booze and fair share of fatty foods. Get the balance.❤
I'm portuguse and never tried moroccan food, but I've seen some shows featuring it, and it looks amaazing! Definately will visit and try some day :)
That last sandwich was Portugal looking at the French Croque Monsieur and saying "hold my beer". Wow.
That's where it started
More like "bring my beer"
Francesinha
That was exactly the inspiration 😄
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 true!
As a Portuguese great job Mark! Love how you show iconic places of the city I live in.
Hope all of you can taste our cuisine some day, choose the right spots and you won't be dissapointed.
Congratulations again!
Your choice of guides is up to the task. Excellent communicators. Fantastic English.
Obrigada! We're thrilled and honored that we got to pass down some of our traditions, so that you can taste Porto away from Porto, taking a bit of our Home to Yours!
À Nossa! 🍻
@@tasteportofoodtours that is from an Azorean descendent. Tripeiros often end up going back to the homeland. They miss that cosmopolitan feel. Life in America is dull.
Major congrats to your guides! Im a Porto local and you literally went to the places i grew up going with my godfather, all the best! All those flavours are home ❤
I'm so happy and proud that you went back to Portugal ❤❤❤❤
Ashame the food is some of the worst..
@@dominicpullen8791Cala a boca urso, sabes lá o que dizes. Volta pra caverna
I live in Porto. Thank you for showing cheap places to eat rather than high-end restaurants (there are here too). This is my kind of food prices under 15 euros.
Portugal! I love how adventurous Mark is and his enthusiasm for everything he eats! Really surprised he hasn't been here before.
he went to Lisbon in 2016, there's video of that
@@Blanck10131 Oh, never knew. Also think he went to NYC in 2016 and would love to see him go back there soon.
Great food and nicest and most welcoming people in the world. ❣Portugal
I was in Porto just last month and it is indeed a very nice place, and all the restaurants are excellent
This Porto Sandwich extravaganza is so great. We live in Porto and absolutely love the food here in northern Portugal. And you are so right about the welcoming and engaging people here. Keep doing what you are doing. Muito obrigado!
Mark fan here! This is by far my favorite episode. This is the only episode that has my mouth watering.
Loved the production of this one. The music score was captivating, and the cinematography visually stimulating. Loved the natural friendly background noise. Overall terrifically produced segment
Mr. Wiens, once again, you hit a grand slam with this great video. I have had the privilege of knowing Portuguese people throughout my life. And eating at a 🇵🇹 restaurant growing up in the DMV. The Franceshina in one of the greatest sandwiches ever!! Had it once. Loved it!! Definitely wanna visit 🇵🇹 someday!!
Man I feel so proud of my city and its people. Thank you for showing how amazing the true colors of Porto are! The main parts of the city have lost some of its charm but if you delve into Porto's alleys you will most definitely be embraced by its essence!
you know when the wine starts kicking in and you start saying "á Nossa!" ahahah, this is brilliant, portuguese gastronomy is one of a kind! magnificent!
ahahahhahahaa Nem mais!....
Porto and Portugal is amazing for food. Time and time again I’ll go back. Great video🙏
Let's go proud to be portuguese and the food getting the recognition it deserves 😭😭 together with Spain, Italy and Greece i think they make up for some of the best cuisines in Europe and around the world aswell!
Thank you Mark, for remembering Portugal. Vamos Portugal!
I love Oporto!! I lived there for two years. I speak Portuguese. Oporto is the greatest city on earth!
I just love your videos, Mark. They're so touchingly human. Your appreciation of what's going on is endearing and lovely.
Thank you very much, really appreciate your support!
Portuguese street food looks so delicious, I love it 👍
Saudades constantes!
Same! 😂
Haha~ anyone else notice how at 22:19 André winks exactly with the ding of the bell? :P
Hahahahahahaha! I didn't notice it the first time. That is hilarious! 😂
I hope you enjoy Portugal, amazing country 🇵🇹
Sandwiches are the life style of so many countries. This tour is outstanding 👏 and the meat looks delicious. Thank you Mark for your Ambassador travel to so many rich food tours. ❤
i am portuguese and from oporto. i am glad you enjoyed yourselves here, and this video really sums up what oporto and the northern people of portugal is. the special way to recipe peoples from the world to "our homes" like family. I have to admit that from all videos talking about Oporto this one is the truest of them all, you really captured our essence and our food. i hope you visit again and thank you so mutch for sharing your experience.
You are here!!!!! SO PROUD! WELCOME MARK and FAMILY!!!
Portugal is just full of beautiful things and people. ❤
Portugal food is very delicious ❤ from fc Germany
What a great tour you did! I'm from Lisbon, Portugal, but my heart (I mean, my stomach) belongs to Porto. I really love the food and the people from that city, I used to catch a flight all the time (20€ for both ways) by myself, just to go visit the city. I made really good friends and keep the sweetest memories. I wish I could get a bite from a sande de pernil right now.
I'm lucky to have a Portuguese café at the end of my road. Francesinha is as good as it looks
I'm so happy when tourists found our best dishes, glad you like it!, huge love from Porto!
Wonderful food! I love Portugal so much!!
I am so glad that you came back to Portugal.. you may have comments saying that this or that place is best but i think the guys showed you the most iconic ones.. in a word.. ENJOY!
Ok,i knew this video would be perfect when they start with Xico dos Presuntos, for the presunto sandwiches and Cervejaria Astro, for the bifana sandwiches. 2 of the most iconic places in Porto.
This is our fast food, all natural ingredients, cooked and served on the spot. And its awesome for me to see my hometown being shown to the world, with its culinary wonders.
You may called me biased, but portuguese food is the best in the world. Bar none.
I’ve been to Lisbon, now I want to go to Porto for sandwiches!
Was in Lisbon last fall and planning a trip to Northern Portugal next spring. Can't wait to try some of these dishes!^^
Can't wait to go back. Was there 2023 June and by far one of my favorite places in Europe. Didn't plan it but was in Lisbon for Festa De São
Joao and had the best time ever. Amazing city, amazing people, amazing food and beautiful country.
The party for São João is in Porto, Lisbon does Santo António and they're completely different parties (more flowers in Lisbon, plastic hammers in Porto 😂). Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed our country!
@@mariajoaotrindade3455 thats my fault what I mean to say was Dia de Santo António and not Festa De São... but its all good because ill be back in Porto in June for the Festa de São.
I spent a few days in Porto 2 years ago, loved it!!! I would recommend making reservations thu, many restaurants were booked full and we struggled to find dinner one night.
Wow Mark, when did the time fly? 10M subscribers and counting, what a milestone! Been following your journey for ages. Thanks for bringing us to the most authentic foodie destinations! You've been an inspiration.
I am always trying to watch your whole videos because of the fascinating presentation., Im hypothetically speaking that, your videos are extremely phenomenal and also unprecedented.love
from Bangladesh. 🇧🇩
From Portugal is sooo much still to discover about street food.
Not just in Porto but all over this beautiful amazing country 💝🇵🇹
I love Portugal. One day, one day...
Your metabolism is admirable😮
Woahh. Glad to see mark with pep enjoying food together.
Say what you want, theres no food like portuguese food.
we, brazilians, thank portuguese cuisine a lot. the mix between portuguese and african influences is the base of our cuisine. and we're very proud of it.
The other 199 countries would differ 😂
Spanish food?
@@EukalyptusBonBon nope
Italian 🇮🇹 food is a but better but hats off to Portugal 🇵🇹 food looks yummy, but I would like to see more variety
I love liver and onions! All the food looked fantastic ❤
Great having you, Mark! Porto will always be here to welcome you home! 💙
Had some of the best food I’ve ever eaten in portugal ❤ can’t wait to go back
Great to hear that!
Mark's energy and smile throughout the video is something else. Really contageous. As a portuguese myself living in Porto I'm so happy to see this and I can confirm our cuisine is one of the best, you won't be disappointed! Portugal may have many inside problems but for tourists I guarantee you will love it.
