Wow, this looks brilliant! Very excited to pick this up 😁 Perfect review as always, and I love that you placed it into the SMB ranking chart as well 😁👌🏻Can never have enough SMB! 🙌🏻
Awesome, I'm glad to have introduced you to a new game! Haha, after all of my comparisons to SMB I felt it was only right to put it into the rankings :D
Thanks :D Yeah, I'm surprised to see that it's not actually been getting all too much coverage. It's a shame because it deserves a lot more publicity than what it's been getting!
I bought this game after watching your review for it, and while I agree that it’s a very good game with some of the most creative level design since the original SMB1/2, I honestly think it’s a little too difficult, or at least gets difficult a little too quickly. On the ‘novice’ level I actually died a handful of times, ‘intermediate’ was a hefty challenge and I truly can’t get past any ‘advanced’ stages. I’ve been playing games my whole life and was able to beat SMB1&2 as a kid, but this game is just brutal. I found myself using the Blitz mode more than I thought I would, and even then that only really helps you in select levels. I agree that recent SMB entries have become far too easy/simplistic, but I feel there’s a balance to strike between that and Paperball. Not to say the crazy difficult levels shouldn’t be included, as people clearly enjoy them, but maybe in terms of how the game as a whole scales its difficulty to eventually get there instead of hitting you with them right off the bat. I hope Banana Mania will hit that middleground I’m looking for. Still, despite some frustration, I enjoyed my time with Paperball overall. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks for checking out the review! I definitely know what you mean with the difficulty maybe being a slight issue. I've been finding the DLC levels to be really hard to get through personally. But yeah, the advanced stages are super tough too. Maybe they should have done more of the easier levels to accommodate people of all skill levels but I guess they were aiming more for the hardcore Monkey Ball audience. I think Banana Mania will be a lot better for that simply because it will have all of the levels from 1 and 2, meaning that there's going to be tons of the beginner levels and advanced levels to ease you into the experience before hitting you with expert stuff!
The mercury meltdown series (kind of like monkey ball, but more puzzley) also has a timer that counts up so you can take as log as you need, but then you can try to beat all your times. It's another great series!
Which version has a timer that counts up? I remember playing the Wii version having a countdown instead... Unless you're talking of another mode that's not the main mode.
@@_SereneMango Oh yeah! You're totally right. I was thinking of the fact that you don't lose when the timer counts all the way down, it just gives you a lower score.
Nice! Yeah it's really good. I absolutely love all of the different imaginative level designs! :D Haha, you had video information a day early! :) You'll have to let me know if you end up getting it on Switch!
Completely won me over with that review. I saw a beta build of Paperball on Nick Robinson's channel when it was being developed. I initially thought it was a cute idea made by passionate fans, but the odd physics were a little offputting. It looks like a masterpiece now! Can't wait to play it! Here's to hoping 2021 will become the Monkey Ball Renaissance!
Yay! That's good to know! I'm hoping that this is really successful when it releases on the Switch because they've done an amazing job with it. I think that Nick Robinson video was how I initially discovered Paperball too! It's good to see that they've improved it so much since then! I hope so! Even with Paperball and Rolled Out, I'm still hoping we see an official Monkey Ball game get announced soon!
I only played the PS2 version of SMB Deluxe when I was a kid! That version of the game isn't very good though so it didn't leave me with the best impression. I only recently went back and played through the entire series and discovered how amazing the earlier games were!
@@PixelPursuit are you going to cover Rolled Out? Its out on the 25th and you can have my kickstarter backer key if you want, i dont have a pc right now
I was actually considering covering Rolled Out, but because I don't normally play PC games I was kind of on the fence about it. I might make an exception to that rule for this though. Woah, thanks for the offer of sending the backer key. Does the key give you any kind of early access to play the game early? I'm definitely interested in playing and reviewing Rolled Out, but before I do that I'm going to wait for it to get a full release rather than being in early access.
I remember getting this game when it first came out for PC, and enjoying my time with it. I didn't really like the slower, floatier, and less elastic physics, but it fits the paper theme I suppose. Also I felt some of the levels were too reliant on waiting for cycles, but for each one of them there was a really clever, creative level to balance it out. I also wonder if they took some inspiration from some of the SMB romhacks out there for level design, because some of them were pretty similar to ones I've seen there
I didn't play it when it first came out on PC but from your description of it, it sounds like they've changed the way it controls quite a lot. While it probably is maybe slightly slower than SMB, it felt just as responsive to me! And I was actually thinking that a huge positive was that you didn't need to wait for cycles, providing you go at a good speed obviously :D So maybe they've also tweaked that as well? I really wouldn't be surprised if some of the people that made this had created some romhacks in the past. Afterall it seems like they're pretty big fans of SMB judging from all of the references in this game!
@@PixelPursuit It certainly could be that they've changed the physics since the first release, but changing physics after launch can get a little iffy as it could break existing levels. I'll definitely need to revisit it though, because it's been a while since I played it. Ultimately though, I don't think the physics are a flaw so much as a change I personally don't like as much. I definitely agree with you that this is a must play for fans of the early Monkey Ball games
HOLY SHIT, split-screen multiplayer, oh yeah I am getting this. Fast rmx is sooo much fun in split-screen with friends! Unfortunately, I have to wait until I can start seeing my friends again, haha. After playing the demo, this game is really really good, will get it when they patch the framerate issues on Switch and the game gets a physical release hopefully. But tbh I think Super Monkey Ball 1 is still better, not only I found the music a bit annoying and the visuals unpolished, but Super Monkey Ball 1 actually has this Japanese arcade atmosphere and personality Paper Ball does not have. I definitely think Nagoshi should make a new Super Monkey Ball game. These guys should definitely help as they understand what makes Super Monkey Ball good and truly nailed the gameplay. Except the video quality having low bitrate and low framerate missing more than half of the visual information, awesome video as always Rob :)
Yeah! Even Super Monkey Ball doesn't have multiplayer modes as good as the ones in Paperball! But yeah, hopefully it won't be too long until we can all get together with friends for some splitscreen action! The frame rate issues are really insignificant. It was hardly even worth bringing up to be honest. It's literally just a thing that happens in like two levels on a particular corner, but other than that it's completely smooth. It would be amazing to see a physical release, I would definitely pick that up! I mean yeah, Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 are hard to beat! But they would have had way more money behind them, so taking that into consideration I think Paperball is incredible. Like I say in the video, it's really all about the gameplay and they absolutely nailed that! But yeah, get the personality of Monkey Ball and the level design of Paperball and you've got a match made in heaven! :)
