You shouldn't feel bad for anyone who makes the choice to hurt themselves. Ronnie is not a victim. He was given the right advice but chose to ignore it. Being the best bodybuilder, the world had ever seen was more important to him than taking care of himself. He is pushing 60, is severely crippled, yet he won't stop lifting weights. The man should be banned from every gym in the country for his own good. He needs to stop and save what little mobility he has left.

I had a coworker that said ronnie would sometimes show up at his gym in the Dallas area sometime around 2005-2010. He said he saw him go to do a heavy squat set, and before he did he took a bunch of toilet paper out of his gym bag, rolled it up and put it in both nostrils. After he did his squat set, the toilet paper was soaked in blood

I've had disk material removed twice myself, and it fixed months of unbearable pain and extremely limited range of motion immediately. I walked home from the hospital the same day. Did some very light training, mostly walking and gentle movement, and since then I've taken up heavy training, but without ego lifting and ignoring signals. Sometimes you gotta chill for a while, and sometimes you have to seek help. You just can't push through when something is broken.

  • @arstans1777

I don't want to offend Ron, he's a legend admittedly, but his actions are pretty moronic. He could've avoided most of this if he quit doing super heavy backsquats and deadlifts. Also saying that he needed to sacrifice his health to this extent in order to win is false too since there are a ton of other mister Olympias or Close competitors like Jay Cutler who have mostly just got the side-effects from steroids and are still kicking in the gym even today..

You have to live it. If you have ever lifted heavy, you would understand. You know how must drugs get worse with time? The effects dull and the high is no longer a high? Well lifting is the opposite.
When i hit 185 on bench, the weight of a grown man, i was floored. When i hit 225, i almost cried in joy and rage. When i hit 275, i hopped up faster than i have ever and was about to kiss my friend on the lips. And i know when i hit 315, the feeling will only be better.
Im natural, and hate druggies and weak/unimpressive people who are on steroids. I hate drugs. I will do whatever it takes to get to a 5 plate bench. Ill take the tren, ill take the estrogen blockers. Id love to get there natty, and it might be possible, but if its not, im hopping on gear.

yes, actually. while under the blanket of “empathy” and “phantom pain” (not precisely like these two but the result is covered by these two things) you can “feel” sensations from watching something happen or hearing a description. ever seen a man get hit between the legs and people (men and women) instinctively react like they have been hit there? similar to that. even if you never had it happen the brain can simulate the experience to a degree, or recreate it if you did have it before. it varies from person to person and injury to injury.
for example, i have seen a man break his leg such that the bone tore through the flesh. even describing it makes my right leg uncomfortable and i rub it in the same place the bone was protruding from his leg. at the same time i have seen someone else have a very similar injury to their arm (bone saying hello and everything) and no such sensation occurs to me. it’s really interesting to me personally.

I have had back issues all my life - even as a child. I have seen good chiropractors and bad, as well as medical doctors… both good and bad.
If you spend more time in a chiropractor’s waiting room than you do getting treated, find a new chiropractor. Ideally, your session should start by relaxing the muscles… unless they are relaxed, they will just pull the joints right back out of alignment post-treatment. Yes it adds time, but… you can see a chiropractor 3 times a week forever if not done correctly enough to bring about change.
If your doctor makes mistakes in your record, calls you the wrong name, etc., do you really want them making medical decisions for you, or cutting you open?
Some of my back issues responded to chiropractic treatment very quickly and thoroughly with no reoccurrence. On the other hand, when I fragmented the disc at L5-S1, surgery was the only option. (A herniated, bulging, or ruptured disc is one thing… the inner jelly sticks out through the outer part of the disc. With fragmentation, the jelly protrudes, then comes apart. Instead of fixing itself in 6 days, weeks, months, or years, a fragmented disc will never fix itself.) My surgery was initially a success… complete relief. Unfortunately, scar tissue set in 6-8 weeks later, and I ended up with a debilitating disability, despite following instructions re: therapy, exercise, diet, etc. (I tried the chiropractor, but the pain was so excruciating I screamed and blacked out. To his credit, he didn’t keep trying, but knew when pain meant adjustment wasn’t an option. He really helped when he could though.
I guess my main point would be: don’t settle for second rate medical treatment - whether it’s a chiropractor or doctor or surgeon or even someone fumbling through a blood draw that’s not going well. Medical people have to learn by doing, but YOU don’t have to be a sacrificial learning case.

He's had plenty of surgeries, but he's made no progress on his addiction, which means he can't moderate his obsession with lifting weights - even when it threatens his ability to lift weights. I see it as more a failure of education, guidance and self-knowledge, rather than a sporting triumph. I have no idea that he put other people close to him through a lot through his self-centered approach to life. Most could have been prevented. I even work in rehab and studied kinesiology..not mentioned anywhere, not even in pre-pregnancy books or classes. Yet it’s insanely common 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

If one doesn’t have it themselves, I imagine it can be hard to understand how it creates muscle imbalance and requires really super careful techniques for core stabilization to prevent making it worse, but to prevent back pain and injury.
I can’t imagine the amount of heavy weights and straining etc he was doing with that injury, and it definitely didn’t look healed. With DR, we measure the gap in finger widths and his looked at LEAST several fingers wide! that is severe. so it was undoubtedly causing an insane amount of agonist/antagonist imbalance and extra strain on his poor back. There are good and bad in every profession. On the whole, the field of chiropractic is rated among the absolute safest and has the highest patient satisfaction ratings. Statistical odds of any injury of significance is extremely rare and estimated by Dr. Cassidy in the most comprehensive study ever conducted to be about 1 in 5.8 million. In twenty-five years of private practice and two years of internship, I have performed several million adjustments with zero reported patient injuries and an over 98% success rate. I will put my record up against any medical provider in my community. I have had numerous medical doctors under my care and have referred several hundred patients for treatment outside my facilities including for spinal surgery. I have caught numerous conditions missed by my patients medical doctors and sent some for immediate emergency evaluations. Do I know chiropractors that I have limited confidence in? Sure, but no more so than any other healthcare profession.

If I sell people crystals I will have 100% safety of practice and my "patients" will receive a legitimate benefit once the placebo effect kicks in, and then their biases being confirmed will cause a feeling of satisfaction.
Of course you should be allowed to receive money from people for making them feel good, that's probably the oldest way to make money. But when you call yourself a doctor you mislead people about the effect you can have.
Ronnie Coleman always left his visits feeling that something positive happened, but that feeling deluded him into thinking he was caring for an issue that chiropracty never made better.

    • @tobymitchell8081
      @tobymitchell8081 Год назад +1

@@muscularclassrepresentativ5663 that’s an interesting perspective, however; there have been more scientific research studies confirming the effectiveness of chiropractic care than virtually all other medical treatments. I personally know Ronnie Coleman and Lee Haney. Both have been under chiropractic care but Ronnie placed undue stress on his body that no level of treatment could have stopped from destroying his body. Ronnie did not even allow for proper recovery or rehabilitation after spinal surgery. Nothing except Ronnie Coleman quitting and never lifting any significant weight could have saved him. Chiropractic treatment may have very well been able to resolve his problems under normal conditions as it has for hundreds of millions of people around the world. The doctor of chiropractic program is the longest doctoral program in all of healthcare requiring more that 4400 hours of study with more time in orthopedics, Xray, and diagnosis than a medical doctor. Virtually every insurance company I work with requires objective proof of improvement as a requirement of care. They don’t care how the patients feel. I think you have erroneous misconceptions regarding the training and education of doctors of chiropractic. It is not a placebo effect when people walk in with vertigo or debilitating migraines and walk out without those conditions. The United States foundation for healthcare policy and research found that chiropractic care is the best option for acute lower back pain based on research published in 1997. The studies are too numerous and exhausting to list but the governments of Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Denmark all have published studies noting the safety, efficacy, and effectiveness of chiropractic care for a myriad of conditions.

It happened several times. Once it woke me up and I had to seriously concentrate to breathe. Another one, my mom was at my trailer when it happened. The reason is that the amount of time spent building that body might amount to those sums if that time was spent earning wages. The point is that those bodies, natural or assisted, require a tremendous effort to maintain into old age, which is exceedingly difficult. But there seems little choice as not doing it likely results in turning into a fat big guy. Genetics will determine the degree of fat and size for sure. But the people tend to eat nearly the same without the work. When I stopped, I maintained the same body weight, but it slowly transformed its shape and makeup. When I started hiking and running, my body changed again and approached my 18 year old self, but with less muscle mass. I’m 61 now. The bonus was the overview of weight lifting culture over time. I’m someone who gets impatient watching a 1 minute short, and this engrossed my attention for 31:13. Excellent presentation.

I am my own personal Ronnie. I made so many mistakes in and outside the gym. All because of ego. All because I had to prove something to someone else or myself.
Listen: No one will give a shit about what you looked like and how much you lifted 20 years ago. I messed up my neck and my back and to this day I'm paying the price for it. I'm still working out and still finding ways to keep fit while not messing up my body even more. It seems almost impossible.
The damage is done. This doc said something REALLY important during the video. He said that Ronnie could have possibly gained and maintained the same level of excellence without destroying his body. That is most def true as I now have come to realize. Your body is your temple. It's your vessel. Use it, train it but never hurt it. You will need it for the rest of your life!!
My conclusion is this and maybe it's helps as advice to younger people. KEEP YOUR EGO IN CHECK! It is NOT your friend. You are never good enough and the grass is always greener on the other side. It's a trap.
Do what you gotta do WITHOUT crossing that line. Everything in life has a price. All you have to do is FIRST consider what that price may be and IS IT WORTH IT?
I wish you all the best!

Ronnie himself acknowledges that he's made some big mistakes and kind of brought this on himself. It's not all on him because he did have a lower back surgery which apparently was a bit botched but he knows he shouldn't have been in the gym doing leg presses just days after back/hip surgery like he did. A lot of the damage he did was AFTER he had already retired so we can't say he did it because he was trying to be the best, at that point his obsession with working out and lifting heavy weights was just pathological, any sane person would have simply stayed away from the gym until fully healed.
Ronnie is an example of someone whose entire identity becomes intertwined with being big and strong and I don't think he knew how or wanted to be anything else even after retiring, which is when this lifestyle becomes very unhealthy physically and mentally.

I had a similar experience when I hurt my back. I lost my balance and instead of dropping the weight I muscled through and tried to regain control. I heard that "POP". I was in Afghanistan at the time and when I went to see a Airforce DR after I couldn't move without being in excruciating pain the next day. He told me I had pulled my hamstring and would not even consider that I had herniated my back. Told me to come back in 3 days if pain didn't subsided, it didn't. Well, he had gone back state side and didn't want to do any paperwork on his last 2 days of deployment. I had herniated S2, L5 and L6. Military being the Military i spent about 4 years fighting it until I finally got surgery in 2016. I made sure to take care for that not to happen if I could avoid it.

Chiropractic Medicine, while Legitimate for correcting misalignment, is indeed not a substitute for acute structural damage. Mr. Coleman did this to himself with his bull-headed persistence in the face of pain and injury. Your explanations were extremely thorough and understandable. Your vocabulary and descriptive ability are superb. Great use of visuals and superior editing. This was a Top notch presentation.
