- During the search for the missing law student Lauren Giddings her friend and classmate Stephen McDaniel gave an on air interview for local news which immediately drew suspicion upon him. Police began to suspect a murder had taken place...

Is Stephen possessed or just crafty?
I think Stephen thinks he's far more crafty than he actually is...🧐
Implying people like this were not in control of their own faculties when they did whatever they did, is to provide excuses for them, in a way. There are people just as mentally ill as Stephen that have the opportunity to harm people just like he did, and they never end up doing it.
The difference between them is one of them CHOSE to harm people, and the others chose NOT to.
@Glum Sulk it's it's a question to generate discussion, my own opinion as you should see from the video is that he was 100% in control at all times
@@PeakedInterest im just putting that out there bc its an actual sentiment that a shitload of people actually DO hold. And tbh i dont think most people really notice the subtle implication that comes from using that type of language.
He was stupid because he talked to police instead of a lawyer.
My city..I watched this unfold over the weekend.
You do not know HOW LUCKY the police were that morning. Her friends had been searching for her all weekend. The police arrived early that morning and parked in front of the garbage cans by the street...not 10 minutes later the garbage truck pulled up but couldn't get to the trash so it pulled around and went to the next house. On the way back to his car the cop smelled something and looked in the trash and found the body.
Steven thought the trash had been picked up when he gave his interview....that is the shock you see...
Seen from Stephen's perspective, that's such a fucking bummer. He even timed the murder so the dump truck would get the remains the following day 🤦.
there was a similar case in boston in 1996 when a homeless man discovered an upper half body(which had been cut in half) in the trash near fenway park. but there was no connection to anyone that night, she was a swedish nanny who was partying at night in downtown boston and then disappeared that night. the murder is unsolved to this day.
It's even worse for her family that the rest of her remains were never found.
Hdtripp exactly then this ultra creep would be free, to murder again and Lauren would just be another missing person. This is obviously what happens to missing people, their bodies just never get found, but wouldn’t the garbage men have discovered the body from the smell and alerted the police.
Right on, bro! He was s h o c k e d!!
That guy is super creepy. For him to think he could get away with it shows that a little knowledge really can be a dangerous thing.
Indeed. If it weren't for his mistake with the body he would probably have never been caught
This was a perfect crime hadn't some cop cars parked in front of the garbage can he dumped the body in, preventing the dump truck from emptying it.
Little knowledge ? He was a lawyer grad I'm freaked out
@@jimmywest1583 ikr 💯
Leave him alone anybody would’ve done what he did
Detective: Look at me son
Stephen: Challenge accepted
Best comment award 😊
Just found this channel. What I’m enjoying is the extraordinarily good production. But also, its gentle. Quiet and thoughtful. There's no screaming grating introduction to grit your teeth through . And its classy and quiet. And mot patronising either. Thank you
The fact she knew who was killing her towards the end is chilling.
That fact got me a little as well
The reporter interviewing him knew she was interviewing the killer too.
It's hard to intimidate people who are psychopathic. Most interrogators aren't trained to deal with these types of personalities.
It's hard to imagine cops this grossly incompetent intimidating anyone with any modicum of legal knowledge, honestly. "You didn't clean your apartment in a week? That's horrible Steven."
@@nambepambe3221 why is it terrible, he knows he cleaned. He wants him to say he didn't clean. Duhhhh💕
Exactly true psychopath, is another level of evil.
It looked like he was in shock, or some catatonic state.
@@dodgyyoutuber9560 probably, but also some kind of disassociative state. I'm not positive, but if he's a psychopath it could be a detached mechanism to distance himself from the victim. No empathy, lack of remorse, treating people like objects. Especially Lauren, someone he knew and lived very close to. He only saw her as an object, not for the person she was. And he discarded her.
Him deep breathing while stalking, watching and filming her apartment is one of the scariest thing Ive heard...😱 What a wacko....😳
To this day that detective regrets saying, Stephen, look at me 😂
Possible parole after 30yrs?! Yet they spared him the death sentence in exchange for a written confession, yet didn’t find the same importance in a caviot that he must show them where the other body parts were? I’d think as a family member they’d have wanted that just as much.
He won't see parole guaranteed.
My sister showed me your channel and I have to say I’m hooked. The detail you give is unmatched and I truly feel shivers with your narration. Best of all, you’re respectful of the victims; nothing about your videos feels exploitative.
Blows my mind a trained attorney wouldn’t ask for a lawyer to be present instead of talking to the police for two hours straight
Ego most likely or he gave up and knew he was done for.
@@graythaprince yeah also he'd said to friends, he would try to act insane after killing someone in hopes of a cushy 5 year sentence at a medical retreat. The guy was totally clueless. So part of his act is him trying to act insane. He actually filed an appeal on this in 2018 alledging he wasn't defended properly due to being "mentally unsound" at the time, this was thrown out. And then in 2020 he filed a habeas corpus appeal which again was denied. Now in May 2022 he's filed Yet Another Appeal!!
I hope when he has his probation hearing in 2041 these appeals show up as proof that he just will not accept responsibility and therefor has not reformed & should not be allowed back out into society.
@@mikesully110 The guy obviously has a superficial understanding of the law. In reality, insanity pleas aren't any better than traditional murder convictions. In fact, it could be argued they are far worse. You're institutionalized for life with no one but nurse ratchet to strap you down to your bed all day. For anyone who is sane within their cognitive abilities they would probably prefer the death penalty.
It just goes to show you why a lot of third rate lawyers coming out of the wood work end up working at Kinkos, which would have probably been Stephen's true career.
To be fair the interrogation was pretty useless
That's not that unusual it's like Ted Bundy they think they're too smart for the system and don't need an attorney
The criminals always think that they are the smartest person in the room. Although he may have been able to assert some dominance in that interrogation when a team is investigating and analyzing, and interviewing they are going to be able to find you out. Sadly we sometimes see reluctance or laziness from the police, going after the easiest suspect and not using the time a resources to do the work to find the right suspect.
Completely agree there. I've seen a lot police laziness when it comes to suspects
As it happened, he was the only suspect, which kind of made it easier for the police.
I like the 2nd officer admitting he doesn't clean at all while judging this tool for never cleaning.
His interrogation is even more strange than he was on the news. Thank you for showing who Lauren Giddings was & pictures of her ❤ The victims are often overshadowed by the monsters who take them away.
Steven's interrogation was very unnerving indeed. Even though I'm just watching it long after the fact, I still felt very creeped out. Another great video, kudos!
Me too 🥹
Why would he be granted POSSIBLE parole after 30 years?!?!?! That guy should NEVER walk free again!!!!
I have a case suggestion: Claudia Aparecida Lopes - bizarre case in wchih woman goes to hospital for c-section, and when doctors open her, they realize that she was never pregnant. It seems like phantom pregnancy, but she had two scans before, that showed that she was indeed with a baby. The second one showed that it was in a breech position, what was the reason for c-section in the first place. Theories are: She, her husband and medical staff all had Folie à deux. The baby was killed due to error, and staff cover it up. The baby was stolen by the staff.
That's one weird case. I would be glad if you'd analise it from top to bottom. Just an idea.
I'll add it to my list
Wtf
You're very close to 100k followers, you really deserve the award for covering interesting topics that weren't covered extensively before, and the cherry on top is that very impressive editing. I shared this video with everyone I know because people need to see this type of content.

@Laurs Bustos thanks, it's so nice so many people like to celebrate it too
I thought Stephen was smart until he told police he broke into people's apartments to steal condoms. I'd never heard this part about the case before.
It's amazing what details people give up when you make them feel relaxed and important. Happens a lot in interrogation footage
I guess he’d rather seem like a creep than a liar to the police, also maybe he knew they’d find the master key inside his apartment
I could've sworn this was a 1mil+ channel with how professionally it was made! Got my sub, love hearing about cases, even ones I know (like this one!)
Thanks very much.
Same here. New subscriber!!
Shared on Facebook. I love how you find cases that people don't know about and give detailed information and make people think about what happened.
Thanks Nicole
Surprised this video only has 5000 views. I've always loved these sorts of videos from the channel, and I hope more continue to come out!
The "five stages of grief" don't happen in the space of an interview!
They happen at various places and don't really stop either. It's not a linear path people rotate in and out of these stages all the time.
I was just using these as visual examples to demonstrate his changing mental state rather than saying he was actually grieving
I love how you give us all the information in a short amount of time...what a delightful and pleasant surprise to find your channel...
Thanks Deanna. A lot of people cover the same things I do but my goal is always to try and give every topic full context and explanation
The interrogation footage is chilling.
I agree. I can understand why the detectives felt creeped out by him. It's very eerie
I wonder why he didn't call for a lawyer to defend him since his first interrogation, only called one later on.
That police interview is flat out terrifying.
Terrifying
The full interrogation is so unintentionally hilarious
You are good at this stuff, very high quality videos and narration. CRIMINALLY underrated channel. Subscribed!
having gone into this knowing the whole story already, it really warmed my heart that you started the story with laurens story
"You go a week without cleaning your apartment?!" *me after months* .... ;-;
Clean it today. Just do it. Push for it. You’ll feel much better after it is very worth it
No... don't clean it... make it more messy!
@mekkiepoo You should have heard the part of the interrogation where the detective asks him if he has enough pairs of underwear to not do laundry for weeks at a time, which is what Stephen told him. The detective asks him if he wears one pair a day or wears a pair for a couple of days. Stephen then tells him he wears a pair for a couple of days because they are not dirty, they are still clean. You could hear the crickets in the silence that soon followed!!
7:31 his response and that stagger…wow. That adrenaline rush must have been intense. His plans completely unraveled. Fascinating to see his brain glitch. His instincts kick in, but in the middle of an interview he can’t react. What a moment.
So pumped about these videos you’re releasing! Excited about what’s to come
I've got plenty more. I had this one almost half done when I started the keddie one which is why I got them out so close together which is unusual for me 😊
Amazing vid, so much backstory I've never heard before. She knew he was creepy. I've definitely learned to listen to that little voice and never underestimate the depravity of creeps.
Yeah if it feels creepy most of the time it is.
I still have no clue how i found your channel at first, but I'm glad i did. Keep up the awesome vids and remember we all love them. Stay safe!
Thank you. If you dunno how you found me that probably means RUclips was doing its job correctly (for once) and suggested it.
Absolutely love the campfire moments of discussing the case
Thanks. It seems to be a very popular feature of the channel
@@PeakedInterest Yeah it peaks your interest.
Yeah, long time lurker here and the campfire parts feel cozy. Like you're chatting with a friend.
I knew the story from JCS. But also wtf was this guy thinking when he claimed to have stolen condoms from another apartment? He could have always said anything else.
That part never has made sense to me.... why would he say that?! What a dummy.... and why keep the hack saws packaging or put the saw in a supply closet... why not just throw them away?!
It must've been a slip when they asked. He was chatting a lot more than prob ever before and didnt keep track with all eyes on him.
People weren't even getting away with murdering someone wayyy before forensics was invented...How tf this guy thought he was an exception to the rule in the present day with all this technology and forensics is beyond me smh
The officer regrets the moment he told him “look me in the eye son” 😂
Every Peaked Interest video I watch keeps me on the edge of my seat and excited for what's to come.

Always get excited when you release a new one. Your true crime content is much more interesting than other typical true crime channels imo love the fireside/campfire analysis and how much you research/think about each case rather than just churning them out as fast as possible for the algorithm. To be fair, I think I would have a similar initial reaction if I were interviewed about my missing friend, only to be informed that her body had been found during it. Though I would not continue the interview after sitting down.
But no one ever said whose body it was in the interview, which is what makes his reaction seem suspicious.
@@thesacredmountain3448 True, but I feel it could be reasonable to assume it was hers/fear the worst, given the context.
@@thesacredmountain3448 They said a body had been found nearby and asked him if he thought it was hers. idk I would have needed a minute too. But him hopping up to continue the interview is weird.
@@mother7219 I think it was an overreaction for who he was in relation to her. He was not a family member or a romantic partner or even a close friend. His emotional response was inappropriate for being basically neighbors that kinda knew each other for not very long, and not knowing whose body it was or even if a body was really found, imo. I personally doubt you would practically collapse like he did onto that little landscaping wall after hearing a body was found unless you knew more already. That’s just so overly dramatic. Of course this is all my opinion and you don’t have to agree. That’s just the way I see it.
@@thesacredmountain3448 Yes!! Great points! He felt like there was much more to the “friendship” and that’s what got him, I believe. He cared waaaayyy more for Lauren than she ever began to dream about caring for him. That’s why his attachment was so incredible and not just platonic.
Possible parole after 30 years?!? What in the world was that judge thinking? He should never, ever have the possibility of parole. Lauren's family should never have to attend a parole hearing and have fight to keep that disgusting, perverted, killer in prison. Seriously. What was that judge thinking???

My thoughts exactly
My thoughts exactly
I've heard about this case in the past and I was always confused as to how they knew he was being suspicious as when I look at his reaction, to me, he seemed shocked and upset about the possibility of the body of a classmate and friend being found.
I appreciate the dissection of his reaction and the explanation as to why it alerted authorities. As always very informative and always enjoy the effort!
The Fire place in a study/library was great tho I think between Campfire and Study Fire place, Campfire is best fire 😁 (either way it's still a nice touch!)
I'd seen people question why it alerted authorities before and since I know quite a bit about body language and facial expressions I thought I'd explain why.
the “shock” to me was really horrible acting, i think thats what made it obvious. he was trying way too hard
His reaction looks like shock that the body was found and it also looks like panic that he may get caught. It doesn't look like someone who is sad that a friend was found dead. Also, when he sits down, he turns away with his back towards the camera. I would think a person who has just heard that a body was found that is likely a friend would want some comfort and not turn away.
It came across as disingenuous also his reaction to her body being found. That was a giveaway.
@@a.s.jackson8203 I agree
His police investigation is the creepiest I’ve ever seen
The editing is top tier! You should get 1 mill views on every video with this production. 😍

This guy went to (criminal) law school, he knows how the interrogation system work, period!
It's kind of strange how these psychos end up in the very positions they could harm people in. The police, nurses, doctors, lawyers, psychologists. Of course not all of them obviously. I respect most people in those professions, but look at the Moscow Idaho case. Seems they're pretty lax on their screening methods.
Like art imitating life bc after seeing The Batman, this dude just like the riddler was a voyeur and returned to the scene of the crime. Also, nice bit of levity with the pro wrestling reference: "his partner tagged in". Great prologue and title sequence, excellent work once again

ShroudedHand another great RUclipsr based in the UK made a video talking about Killers who appeared on TV and he talked about Stephen aswell. I’m glad I found your video where you go in depth into the story especially adding the Fire-Side Analysis at the end! It’s so entertaining and adds a lot to the video and with all the details of the case laid out in such a perfect manner. This entire video is a masterpiece! Great work!
Wonderful video as usual, I saw a lot of JCS' influence which was GREAT (he's a favorite too). I liked the breakdown of Stephen's body language on camera. I do wonder if Stephen had been able to set aside his ego and have a lawyer present, how the case might have turned out. Maybe exactly the same. Maybe worse. Maybe he wouldn't have seen jail at all. But the self control in the interrogation room was INCREDIBLE to watch. Innocent men don't have that level of self control when they're having the screws put to them. Not to mention, knowing which question was meant to be incriminating and which one wasn't. Those are usually VERY unclear. Thank you for covering this hell of a case.
Jcs is an excellent channel. Really enjoy their work

The questions about cleaning his apartment were funny. That apartment looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months.
I love your perspective on this case.
On another channel I watched about this case there was an interesting fact I hadn’t heard on other channels regarding how he would behave if he were a lone gunman. It was early similar to his performance here. I don’t think he was crazy at all.
The detective seems more upset that he didn’t clean his apartment for a whole week!!
Very Interesting how you told this Story. Easy to Listen to and understand every word of this true and gruesome Murder of Lauren... I will remember her sad story.
I one time got interrogated for a stabbing because someone had used same style pants as I did. as a nervous person I was a nervous wreck at the interrogation, all shaking and could barely talk. I was so sure they thought I was guilty but the one who did it had criminal background with drugs and violence. Interrogations are scary, they really push the questions with more questions questioning if you're sure about your answer once you answer one. I "knew" the guy, used to be on a different class back in elementary school
I subbed you’ve got some really good videos.
Almost at 100k congrats
It's thanks to nice folk like yourself.
Using such techniques on someone in an interrogation is pretty fucking risky. They may just as well recieve a confession from an innocent person. Sleep and food deprivation, that's some stasi type shit, and all they had at that point was that he acted strangely on TV when given the news they found her body.
@Richard Homan So, no justifiable homicides in your book?
hahaha!Staring part is just hilarious!
The narrative (with rain) makes me very relaxed and sleepy. You should consider an ASMR video of some such. Trust me, that genre is HUGE.
ASMR crime stories?
Damn, that guy was excellent during the interrogation. Thank god he got caught, though.
He kept using “we were”, as in past tense, on the news camera. Did anyone else notice that?
