Don't let this distract you from the the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, Bubba "Spare Tire" Dixon.
I agree. The 993, the C5 Corvette, the supra, 355, diablo and countach. Such cool cars in the 90s because they were so raw and simple. Today there's too much iphone connectivity BS and noise deadening.
I believe the car is worth what it is because: -It was one of the fastest cars of its time -You can't get a new 911 Turbo or Turbo S in a manual -Was the fastest of the air-cooled production 911's -Has a classic look and feel with performance that still matches modern-day cars you can get better performing and newer cars for the same money, but you can never get the feel of an older car buy buying a new car today. Moral of the Story: Worth the money? If you want straight up comfort, technology or performance, No. If you want a car that will never go out of style, will still be very fast by today's standards, and have a classic car feel, then yeah. It's worth the $150-200K
Exactly! The LAST AIR COOLED 911 Turbo with a STICK!! The first ones in the 80's are also a lot of money because they're highly desirable and SO COOL!! Definitely worth it!!
2 scenes stand out, opening after the fries drop and the camera focuses on the front tire when the 911t comes to a stop and the drag race to the opening of the wall against the 427 AC Cobra and Will Smith yelling "you can do this!". One of my all time favorite cars.
The 993 is a real gem in Porsche history. It was the total package, and it still looks great. It was such a clean and straightforward car in terms of styling. No crazy mouths in front No superfluous creases No weird light setups No wasteful black plastic bits No unnecessary curves No chrome No extraneous panel gaps No crazy exhaust tips or housings And like Rob said, as far as exotics went at the time, it was damn reliable. It's a modern classic and as much as I hate to see these things escape my potential grasp due to appreciation, I can't say the car isn't deserving. This was the last great 911 before Porsche almost bit the dust, and right before they got the Japanese in to help them retool their operations and products.
This is my favorite all time 911. Everything about it is perfect. Lightweight, the looks are amazing. It's fast even today. Those cars have the best visibility I've seen. The front of the car is almost not even there
My childhood SuperCar crush is the 05 Ford GT, and your running from the cops video is one thing I will never forget. When he moves over in to the right lane then down shifts twice, I love that sound!
The value comes from the 993 being the last of the air cooled Porsche's, with it's original design & dimensions after that the 996 was a complete redesign. It was also the quickest production road Porsche since the 959, all that helps make it a valuable car. It was one of my childhood favourites too.
Oh man, this video and car bring back some good memories for me! The first manual transmission car I ever drove was a 1996 911 Twin Turbo. I remember getting in and ignition on left and thinking how minimal the interior was--truly a drivers car. I wouldn't say it is worth 200k, BUT back when I drove one, it was 78k and that DEFINITELY was worth it. Too bad I didn't have the money :)
tolga1cool My childhood dream car. Had a black matchbox cars with tan interior. The doors opened. I'd still own a Porsche over anything else if I were rich. The new Turbo S is a nearly perfect car.
Matthew Wattie Convertibles from today doesnt have a solid roof fully integrated. the point is, its not only the A Pilar that sustains the force of an impact.
One of my all time favorite cars as well. I don't think there's many better looking cars out there, from the lines to the bulging rear it's superb. A good buy is a 993 Carrera 4S, not as fast as the turbo but you get that raw experience. I think that's why people love the 993 so much. Personally, I'd want a driver as well, the ones who buy there's don't care you can buy a newer exotic that's faster, more tech blah blah, they want the driving experience. I will own a 4S one day.
It's funny reading this comment 4 years later with the current market. This car (assuming it has ~80k miles still) would go for $150k-170k right now. :D
They are worth it. I get offers for my 993's all the time but what am I gonna replace it with?? Nothing is as fun. The local PCA chapter agrees (the new pcars are always trying to keep up) and that timeless look is unbeatable. This is Porsche's greatest work.
993 is the best looking Porsche ever made and the Turbo variant is the King of all Porsches. Not fastest, but among the most desirable. And thus...that drives the prices up. They are not overpriced at all, it's just capitalism.
I owned a 993 TT X50 for a while in the early 2000s. It remains the most complete, and probably the best car I've ever owned. I'm sure that Rob's interest in the car is very much wrapped up in its current value, and in how much he could make flipping one. It's worth remembering that at around 20 years old now, they can be fantastically expensive to run - like all old Porsche Turbos.
Better than every car in your collection, and all of the cars in your collection; at the same time. The last Jedi. None of your cars even come close. Your friendly neighborhood... - KNIGHT RIDER 😎
I totally get what you're saying about owning an appreciating car vs one that you can thrash. If I'm getting myself a dream car and it actually lives up to the self made hype I'd really want to drive it hard.
You even wore a blue jacket like Will Smith wore in the 1st scene. My FAVORITE part was the last chase scene was that 964 TURBO SPOOLING sound with the exhaust note as Martin was chasing down that AC Cobra!! Good times!
I didn't get the fuss either, until I bought my 993. You can't fully enjoy a 993 on the highway; they come alive on back roads. Although it's not the most sophisticated suspension, it tackles curves and you truly appreciate how visceral and connected you are to the car. My car isn't as powerful as the Turbo, and the Turbo further adds to the experience (unlike modern Turbo cars) and provides more torque. The market is certainly inflated, but gone are the days of $60-70K 993 Turbos. P.S. You should drive a C4 ZR-1, it will make you hate the C4 much less.
The 1st Porsche i drove was a 993 cab. back in 2002 or 2003. just a few days after i started working as a Porsche mechanic. Was really nice to drive, but it was just 5-6 years old then.
My dad used to have a 993 Turbo S (With the incredibly rare 4 Tip exhaust), it had a slight tune and some stuff done to the brakes and suspension, and holy shit did it go, sadly when he got me he sold it and bought an RS4 B5.
He got an entire family and the porsche just wasn't a good daily driver anymore, but don't worry, he got it up to a healthy 600~ HP, great for Autobahn driving.
I think the main reason why it's so expensive is the fact, that it's the last barebone 911, but still very fast. No Tiptronic, no electric windows, pure sound. Plus collectors value. It's a Porsche enthusiast car.
Sub 4 second 0-60, still air cooled IIRC. Everyone knew the air cooled engines were coming to an end but didn't know when. Just like how everyone talks about the end of 12cyl cars today. I bet Rob could do a great Joe Pantoliano impression. Now do a 550/575M from Bad Boys II.
If you really want to know why this car is by far the best of the best...look at other Porsche models. 356S, 550 spyder, first 911, first turbo...930, and finally the 959. The 993 is the toned down, sleaker, more daily version of it. I love em all. The new Porsches ride nice and are fast but so is every car with a high price tag and sporty equipment and high powered engines. A Corvette with a 15k twin turbo kit, bilsteins and springs and sway bars and link upgrades, and drag radials is still the best bang for the buck though...Very nice car for 70k...700hp and amazing handling.
I think one of the reasons the 993 turbos are worth so much is that a lot of the technology that was developed in the 959, trickled down into this car. So in essence this is more like a bargain 959, rather than an expensive 20 year old used Porsche. Plus dat ass, look at those fat fenders, the whale tail and the skinny waistline. That is the pinnacle of the classic 911 lines.
The generation before that car in turbo version was awesome to my neighbor had one when I was a kid he bought it brand new and put a lot of money into it that car was so outrageousely fast and stopped well it was just so ahead of anything else on the road at the time
Jimmy Grant That's overstated, I think. I have a 4 speed '78 930, and the lag is nowhere near as bad as it's rumoured to be, nor is the car as slow as people say it is off boost. A lot of armchair pilots out there.
He mentions that it does everything good but was not the best performing car of that time period...you might want to check the stats...0-60 was 3.7s....180+ all out....possibly the best brakes, and had one of the fastest 1/4 miles times for much of that time period too. The 512TR and Diablo both were faster all out but out of the hole nothing could stay with this car apart from something like a McLaren F1 and I think it was selling for close to a 1 million back then. The reason these are so expensive today apart from the fact that they are the last of the aircooled, is the productions numbers....I think he quoted ~2000 built over two years, that is a rare beast.
I had a near perfect one of these for 10 years that I (unfortunately) sold in 2011 for $95K, which I thought was all the money. While it was a good car in it's day, paying the same as a low mileage pristine 458 or 997.2 GT3RS for one of these is crazy. If I had kept mine I would have sold it two summers ago at the height of the frenzy, as these are now starting to slide a bit in price.
I miss my 1986 Porsche 928 S4. Granted it was an automatic but it was one hell of a car for its time for 1K sticker. I later bought a 95? 928 GT five speed. I worst they still made them. I made the mistake of buying the 86 new. I lost a lot of change when I drove it off the lot.
"Dream a better Dream" ... like a 996 Turbo, best value bang for the buck proposition that can be tuned to the max, and still be 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of that old stock under powered 993 Turbo. (FYI: 1 Bar = 14psi)
My 'crush' for this year was the F355 Ferrari. The one that you said your crush would "mop the floor with". I will say that in the quarter mile, yes this would beat the F355, but not exactly mop the floor with. Top speed is the same and handling, I think the F355 may corner a little better. I do love this car but wow, the F355 just has better curves, you have to admit.
David C I heard his knee was down.
This has the greatest comment of all time.

mikethecoolguy I've subscribed your channel looks awesome love that s5 as well
You sir have been in a 70's Chevy Bel air. Seriously those things had holes in the floor by the 80's. They had most awesome tailgate on any wagon.
Some do.
LMAO
90's cars are the best. timeless styling, thin A pillars, and plain steering wheels without a million ugly buttons.
SofaKingLeet eacalade tons of buttons
97 supercharged Buick Rivera , got so many buttons makes a new Rolls Royce look like a play school "my little driver "
I agree. The 993, the C5 Corvette, the supra, 355, diablo and countach. Such cool cars in the 90s because they were so raw and simple. Today there's too much iphone connectivity BS and noise deadening.
I still have my 98 NSX...Very simple car but so much fun they don't make cars like that anymore.
SofaKingLeet a d the steering wheel wasn't big and bulky
I believe the car is worth what it is because:
-It was one of the fastest cars of its time
-You can't get a new 911 Turbo or Turbo S in a manual
-Was the fastest of the air-cooled production 911's

If you want a car that will never go out of style, will still be very fast by today's standards, and have a classic car feel, then yeah. It's worth the $150-200K
I understand your point completely, but if I had the money (lol...), I'd buy a 991 turbo S instead!
Exactly! The LAST AIR COOLED 911 Turbo with a STICK!! The first ones in the 80's are also a lot of money because they're highly desirable and SO COOL!! Definitely worth it!!

The ignition switch trim piece ALWAYS fades on those old school 911s.
“I am now Will Smith” best Rob quote of all time 😂😂😂 love you man once I get a faster car lets go for a cruise
I saw a black 993 Turbo on the freeway one sunny afternoon, and I fell in love.
Its air cooled twin turbo all wheel drive. A marvel of engineering of its time. Awesome! That is why.
They are worth so much because they were the last air cooled Porsche.

My dad has a 993 Carrera 4 in the exact same colour as yours. with red leather. Such a beautiful beautiful car. I love it
tolga1cool I drove my buddies last year. Absolutely awesome.
tolga1cool My childhood dream car. Had a black matchbox cars with tan interior. The doors opened. I'd still own a Porsche over anything else if I were rich. The new Turbo S is a nearly perfect car.

@@1240Dax I wish they "Porsche" would make a 356 ish type of car with modern running gear....from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠

The reason why they are expensive, is simple. "Hype snowball. "
One of the best videos you've made in a long time. Hope you keep up the good work.
Nobody actually following the market would give him $130k for that with 80k miles.
It's funny reading this comment 4 years later with the current market. This car (assuming it has ~80k miles still) would go for $150k-170k right now. :D
@@andrewholt2078 nor will we discuss how much people are willing to pay for a 308 GTS. Hint: well above the purchase price when it was new.

It is possibly one of the best looking car out there. I love Porsches
Glenns channel is awesome. He owns some amazing cars. Make more videos with him Rob !
993 is the best looking Porsche ever made and the Turbo variant is the King of all Porsches. Not fastest, but among the most desirable. And thus...that drives the prices up. They are not overpriced at all, it's just capitalism.
I was expecting you to live in a fancy house in a gated community since you own the 488
He did a house tour here

I did a house tour video, and a video on the new house I just bought.

Come to Canada. you won't be able to afford either, robs house would be $2 million.
MrEeeaddict ok that's not true, maybe in Vancouver? Yeah. But everywhere worse you could get something huge for 2 million.
I still remember when I drove one of those back in 1998. I'm a huge 911 turbo fan ever since.
Today, Mr. Spaghetti tries to figure out why air cooled pasta is so expensive. Wants to play with Will Smiths noodle.

my friends dad owned a 1993 turbo. he sold it about 7 or 8 years ago for 70-80k. has been kicking himself in the ass ever since
In my opinion that is one of the best looking Porsches made. I like the 96 turbo. They are expensive but super good looking
Your spot on everything you said about the comparable cars of that era, The features in that car is all I need. Glenn is cool af too
Some of those older porsches are beautiful. I saw one like this at Barrett Jackson that was red with black and tan interior. It was stunning.
I wouldn't be able to have any collectors cars. I'd drive the shit out of them and then go to bed crying about how much fun I had
This thing can still do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. Awesome car - one of the best looking ever made.

My favourite 911 Turbo model. Kicking myself for not getting one a few years back when they could be found for 85k CDN.
I've a 1996 993 C2 iris blue metallic, 66,000 miles, 6-speed manny tranny, varioram, LSD. No CEL, no oil leaks. I'm never selling it.
Hey Rob. Love your videos. Drive safe man:)
I remember seeing one of these in Paris in 2002, and it was HAULING. Loved the sound it made too.
The single most beautiful car ever made in my opinion.
My dream car in blue. The most beautiful automobile. I just salute you. Congratulations.
I totally get what you're saying about owning an appreciating car vs one that you can thrash. If I'm getting myself a dream car and it actually lives up to the self made hype I'd really want to drive it hard.
One of the reasons why I like this car so much is I considered it and obtainable 959. The car has a Tea tray spoiler not a whale tail spoiler
You even wore a blue jacket like Will Smith wore in the 1st scene.
My FAVORITE part was the last chase scene was that 964 TURBO SPOOLING sound with the exhaust note as Martin was chasing down that AC Cobra!!
Good times!
For me it's the ultimate Porsche. Timeless. 996/7 not even close.
Best looking factory rims ever...the turbo swoosh
I agree nothing better then a nice gear box. also a nice shift knob

superspeedersRob can you address these morons with these lame Spaghetti comments? It was funny 3 months ago but now it is getting out of hand.

The 993 is so beautiful 😍
The 1st Porsche i drove was a 993 cab. back in 2002 or 2003. just a few days after i started working as a Porsche mechanic. Was really nice to drive, but it was just 5-6 years old then.
1 bar of boost is roughly 14.7 psi at sea level.
My dad used to have a 993 Turbo S (With the incredibly rare 4 Tip exhaust), it had a slight tune and some stuff done to the brakes and suspension, and holy shit did it go, sadly when he got me he sold it and bought an RS4 B5.
He went backwards and lost a lot of money.
He got an entire family and the porsche just wasn't a good daily driver anymore, but don't worry, he got it up to a healthy 600~ HP, great for Autobahn driving.
Your advice for a first sports/exotic is spot on. I bought a 997, wonderful car. The 993 turbo is my dream car though
Simple was good. Easy to use and less expensive to fix
I think the main reason why it's so expensive is the fact, that it's the last barebone 911, but still very fast. No Tiptronic, no electric windows, pure sound. Plus collectors value. It's a Porsche enthusiast car.
My favourite 911 version !
The 993 is my favourite Porsche, and one of my all time favourites cars ever! sadly they are too expensive now...

Very objective. I agree and I’ve owned 2 911s. Always good to have a driver
The 993 would walk the table with the 355.
I'm gonna catch a lot of slack for this.

Great review and on my favorite Porsche the 993. Hey ahhh did you buy the car?
Por-sha for chrissakes. Sweet ride!
I love the way you look at cars
the 993 GT2 is my favorite 911 of all time, the widow maker it was called.
I always HATED the spoiler on those. I'd prefer the regular 993 Turbo.
Today Mr Spaghetti leaves fingerprints all over the 993 gauges from his greasy pasta-covered fingers.
Yes!! Hurry up and buy!!
Air cooled, nice instruments...I'll take it over a modern one any day.
Wasn't bad boys a black 964

People probably want them for simplicity. Plus they're good looking
I can conclude that a 930 Turbo had turbo lag from hell.
Mostly down to turbo bearing design. A school bus could out run them until it came on boost.

Love them, stunning car. I'll probably never own one though.
At the time...this was amazing! And quality interior with speed
Looks like a low option car. Great color combo.
When meeting your childhood heroes goes well
"Sir, why you speeding?" "Need to cool my engine" *shows owner´s manual to officer
Is it a limited edition? Damn right it's limited! No back seat, no cup holders....
"Dream a better Dream" ... like a 996 Turbo, best value bang for the buck proposition that can be tuned to the max, and still be 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of that old stock under powered 993 Turbo. (FYI: 1 Bar = 14psi)
nice 996 turbo wheels on the 993
Glad someone else noticed
So did I, but I prefer the original 993 hollow spokes.
