  • When his impoverished past is uncovered, Matt Howard (Cary Grant) is promptly fired by the Peytons, a wealthy family in Williamsburg during the Revolutionary War era. Undeterred, Matt returns to court the family's daughter, Jane (Martha Scott), and the two marry and raise a family in the Virginia backwoods, infuriating the Peytons. The birth of a crippled son results in years of tension between Matt and Jane, and, when Matt decides to join the army, Jane makes a stunning decision.

It moved me . What all the mothers, sisters , wives and children went thru to have lost their men to die for freedom. So through association with their men they suffered and died a little too with the loss of their husbands , fathers, grandfathers , uncles and brothers. They did their part at home continuing to carry on on their farms and city households. I'm sure many became destitute also . All for the liberty this country enjoyed. Now we have the same fight - families again suffering economically and mentally with a divided country. 😢🙏🛐

Martha Scott was tantalizing , although this film makes it obvious why Grant starred in so few westerns, historical and frontier films . Great on location filming in Williamsburg with eye catching costuming, but the battle scenes were awful , possessing no historical accuracy at all . From the start , some frontiersmen were depicted holding French military muskets, as were those going to join Washington at Boston in 1775, something totally absent from here until 1777 ...... Never the less, a fun movie to watch .... Once !

@ “You get your manners in Virginia?” is a improper question🤡 Did you study English in Special Education Classrooms?

The events did happen, historically. Grant's character represented all the real Shenandoah men.

There is no place for tyrannical governments on the face of the earth, but RIGHTEOUS Government, which is only found in the Kingdom of God soon to be established on earth, under the Rulership of the KING of Kings, and His Saints; not yet, but soon, under the Holy and Righteousness Laws of God! Pray for it and hope for it, and live for it: "Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven!"

Very strange movie. So poorly written. Cary Grant's character - is he supposed to be Irish? He calls his wife Lass, which I thought was an Irish term. Or is he supposed to be a back hills mountain man with no manners? Or is he a society wannabe? Or is he a military man? The character failed on all of those, so he ends up being a wishywashy everything, while other characters are more consistent and steady.

You need to study your Virginia history of the first Burgess Legislature events.

Back then, he could have been all of those at the same time. Even today, for that matter, a person could have just arrived from Ireland, moved to the back hills, met another person from a different social strata when a war breaks out. Life is not a box.

You can't be serious ! 😂 Trump would have been for King George III, like the Brother-in-Law. Total Tory snob, unwilling to fight, forced to contribute to help feed and clothe Continental Army. That's Trump, to a tee ! You misunderstood the history completely. 😢
