Bell Ringing at Merton College, Oxford

- Half a lead of Bristol Major, and a lower on these, the oldest complete ring of eight by one founder. They were cast by Christopher Hodson in 1680, replacing a slightly earlier octave (cast by Michael Darbie in 1657 - then only the second time an eight had been cast together). These bells in turn had replaced an older 5. They were rehung by White's in 1982, when they were retuned; other than that, they remain as Hodson cast them.
Merton bells are most famous, however, for the unique ringing environment; the bells being rung from an open gallery, itself installed with the bells in 1680. This gallery is some fifty foot from ground level, with an opening in the middle of around twenty foot square. This certainly makes ringing here quite daunting, and one has to have a head for heights! However, they handle nicely and sound excellent for their age, giving off a superb old-fashioned boom. Quite an experience!
Tenor 25-1-10 in Eflat

What a great sound, love that deep 'boom' tone!
Their sound belies their age, they're superb!
really nice bells No spider to hang the ropes on BUGGER..
That must be one decent size belfry
Makes you wonder if a stay snaps and you hold on.... would be best to have a net 😁
But how do they get up there? I visited the chapel and saw no doors to stairs.
What a amazing and strange ringing chamber. What if your afraid of heights and that is your tower that your regularly ring at?!! :)
Something tells me that this would not be your tower if you were afeared of heighted ;-)
In my opinion scarier than Pershore Abbey because the drop is in front of you and not behind!
do they litrly have to chime them like that if i was one of those i would probly be cringing as i actully dont like hights
Lovely bells! And who's that on the tenor? :)
Not me for once!.... Isaac O'Shea from Abingdon lowering the mighty beast!
Nervewracking having to stand on another box with that drop... was it hard to get a ring here?
I actually found the tenor OK, it's set back a bit from the gallery so not too bad! If anything, the 6 was more daunting, although it's the 3 here that has the reputation for being the nervy one (rope falls closest to the edge of the gallery). And no, there's paid ringing (although you're not paid!) a few times a year - listed on the OS calendar, which is fairly open.
Rang here at a college youths country meeting I wasn't frightened at all
They are not bad at all
But I don't think peals are allowed .
You do see the occasional peal from here, for an occasion, usually locals or using past University ringers. But they are let out for very few (if any) visiting bands for outings, peals etc.
I struggle ringing on a basterd box so that's a no go for me😂😂
I know the guy who was on the tenor
sounds like D
