I didn't have much interest in this to begin with, but this kind of terrible business practices has made it a definite no buy for me. If this was all the games I might have shelled out some of my dough, but to hear it isn't on the digital... I definitely am not buying. Terrible 😔.
Grew up with this series and have a lot of nostalgia. It was some of the first games I got to play growing up. I picked up a copy from strictly limited because you get more versions of all these classics. Really enjoyed Monster boy. The music and gameplay brought me back to simpler times.
I'll probably get this on sale just so I can play Wonder Boy in Monster World on the Switch. But locking two games in this collection behind a limited edition physical version is beyond scummy!
If only it was two. The Strictly Limited ‘Anniversary’ release will have no less than 21 versions of the Wonderboy games when it arrives in early 2024..
@@jawessome *Hopefully* they'll do the right thing and at least make this complete collection a DLC for the available platforms. Locking that much versions of 6 games is just a plain dick move, Wonder Boy is already a niche series, and by omitting that much games is like not wanting the series to be more well known, especially since SLG is notoriously known for not delivering their products in time, if at all. It's almost like they actively don't want the series to sell, then say "Well damn, people aren't interested in WB anymore, better stop revitalizing it.", and this is not what the fanbase wants. On an unrelated mote, hope this collection also hits Xbox and PCs like Clockwork Aquario is doing (And MW4 remake did, although for PCs only), preferably not gimped like it currently is. Despite the jankiness on some titles, these are great pieces of history for the franchise, especially since they plan to include other versions of the games like SEGA AGES did back then.
First Sega omit Wonderboy from their rerelease of their Sega Classics compilations, and now they omit both the SMS Wonderboy 3 and the arcade Wonderboy 3 from their Wonderboy compilation. Thanks to you Sega, I’m now the proud owner of a Abernic RG350.
Nice review, Dave! And thanks to SwitchUp for this review, been wondering how this one would turn out. I love these games, especially Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV. But I agree it's a shame that Dragon's Trap wasn't included. However the Dotemu remake of Dragon's Trap is excellent and a fine example of how great a remake can and should be. To anyone who hasn't played these games, I highly recommend them if you enjoy adventure platformers and metroidvanias.
I love this series so I ordered the ultimate collectors edition on strictly limited. But strictly limited/inin games have been really greedy in terms of putting exclusive content on strictly limited carts. Like the turrican collection, Darius collection, and now this. Really shady. I get that they say “not everyone wants to pay a premium for every game included” but idk I feel like people would if it had everything so make it retail and make the limited editions on strictly limited
Wonder boy arcade version is my favourite arcade game of all time. Got me hooked on arcade speed running and needed serious skill. I'm not a fan of the rpg game it turned into. Had it on pre order since I found out about it cos its the only release of the original arcade on consoles. Finally finally finally get to play it legally again.
The original Wonder Boy received a perfect port on the PS2, courtesy of renowned studio M2 -> SEGA Ages volume 29: Monster World Collection even supports 240p/256p for CRTs.
Well there is the adventure island series which basically is like classic wonder boy( one or two titles have rpg elements aswell like the snes game), they should also make a collection for that series.
I grew up a Nintendo kid so I never played any of these games the first time around. My first experience with the series was Dotemu’s remake of Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap. I finished that and enjoyed it quite a bit!
Yeah, skipping this because of the limited version, I've had it with these companies exploiting my nostalgia to charge exorbitant prices. The actually BEST physical releases with the nicest extras have NOT been from Limited Run or SRG or Strictly Limited, it's things like Hollow Knight, Ty 1&2, DDLC+, Ion Fury, Untitled Goose Game, etc. The limitation mafia are really lazy now because they've cornered part of the market and they know it. If they have a limited edition with physical goodies, fine, I might even buy one every now and then, but when you lock significant content that should be in the regular edition in to suck more money from retro gamers? Nah, not having it, I'm fully done with those things. Lol sorry for rant, but damn this crap is annoying, I was looking forward to this release too since I'm a big fan of the Monster World games. Thanks for a thorough review as always.
Not only does the strictly limited version include two additional games but it includes multiple versions of each game like the Master System version of three of these games. So I pretty much refuse to get such a stripped back collection seeing as the strictly limited version will now probably go on ebay for several times the price because of this.
Having my original SMS with a Wonder Boy cartridge, I must say…nostalgia rules the land. I’ve never played any other, but they look cool. However, I’m content with what I have and it’s a hard pass. Now…what about that TMNT Cowabunga Collection? 🤔 SOLD
Kind of messed up that the trailer shows footage from the console version of Monster Land, but the actual game features the arcade version. The console version doesn't have the weird timer, and it's presentation works better on a home console. I was really excited for this collection. Disappointed with a number of the decisions they made.
The one thing that always annoyed me about these games is having to chase the coins. You can't just run along, kill things, and grab the coins quickly. At least I can't.
I just realized this collection is missing Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS). Not to mention Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (arcade). *FAIL! INCOMPLETE!* If was already wasn't going to buy this, I certainly wouldn't now.
Are we learning now that ALL these limited run companies are con artists. Open your eyes fellow gamers and avoid them like the plague upon gaming that they are. Smaller developers want to grow and expand? Why get involved with a company that does the bare minimum and attaches an arbitrary sales number because of fear of failure. Be confident in your products and give EVERYONE a chance to purchase them
I know a few people, myself included, that are are refusing to buy this game because it is not a complete collection, so the publisher is losing out on our business by deciding to go this route with SLG and gating off content behind a limited edition.
That's true. The thing about having a review brain on is to talk about the game as it is, I mean the complaints I had about the music can be rectified by muting it and listening to something else as I play 😆
Hmm, wir haben uns das Spiel leider über den ESHOP gekauft. Somit keine Chance auf eine Rückerstattung. Das Spiel Wonderboy hat einen KO-Fehler. Really pisses me off for people like me who own the 3 remakes, kind of shitty like when they added one more game to that Disney collection and people who got the lion king and Aladdin missed out on jungle book…

@@TheVioletBunny I am not talking about the remake. Monster world is a terrible game, and dragons trap is the perfect end to the trilogy. Dragons trap should have been in this collection. Instead if you want to play then old school style and plan an additional game you need to buy this. I wish they offered it as a dlc or something in addition to the others. I have the 3 remakes and while they are great I always wondered 1 only one has a retro mode.

Then the sequels that used the adventure island name were no longer Wonder Boy games but continued in a style similar to the first. Essentially one game created the adventure island and monster world games based on different elements of the first game.
Guys please be aware that (certainly on the PS5) the controls for the original Wonder Boy have been messed up. They have separated out the Run function and put it on a separate button. The original Arcade game has attack/run and jump on two buttons, now you have Attack - Run - Jump on three separate buttons making the game a mess. A shame really.
hard pass on this one, wonder boy 4 is the only one of these games that really aged well, and if you want to play that you might as well buy the remake which gives you the original game as well.
