I had The Dragon’s Trap as a kid for the Master System. Was happy to rediscover it for the Switch many years later, and finish what kid me couldn’t. And then a year after that, Monster Boy came out and was even better! Great video as always guys. Some of the best stuff on RUclips 👌
Excellent work, here. Very well researched and full of interesting details that I, even as a hardcore fan, hadn't known or thought much about. It makes me happy to see Wonder Boy have such a renaissance, after being ignored and underrated for many years. Even the older games get their due in a way they never did in the past.

This series meant a lot to me growing up. Only knew of it because my family bought my cousin's Master System after he got a Genesis, and he happened to Wonder Boy 1 and 3 for that system. Once we eventually got a Genesis, I made sure to snatch up Monster Boy in Monster World. That game really perfected the original formula, and I still regularly think of some of the musical tracks from it. Thanks for making this.
Another triumph of a video from this channel. Love to see it. The original wonderboy game was something I played on master system. I played in the early nineties as a little kid and while the game itself was ok it was no super Mario bros and SMB was what I wanted to play so the wonderboy games I had (also had wonderboy in monster world) didn’t have a fair chance with me. I appreciate the info about Westone’s business relationship with Hudson and the explanation why adventure island and wonderboy are so similar. I actually liked the adventure island games more than the wonderboy games 🥲 But having watched this video I have a lot more respect for Weatone and their wonderboy/monster world games.
You make the fractured chronology of this series make some internally consistent kind of sense. Absolutely masterful work, telling this series' story in an engaging & interesting way, and with killer presentation, as always.
Thank you for your wonderful video on the history of Wonder Boy / Monster World. I have never seen such a beautifully edited video about the history of the game with such beautiful visuals and presentation. I think it is a wonderful piece of work. I love the large 3D tree behind Asha. Also, the animation of the palette commentary is cool. Thanks and kudos to all the staff involved in the production of this video. I am very happy. Thank you so much!
Amazing work as always! I love how this was effectively a retrospective on the entire Wonder Boy series. I really, *REALLY* need to finish Monster World III and IV. They seem like great games.
Thanks! Wonder Boy in Monster World (Monster World III) is really accessible. It's actually one of my all-time favorites and also one of the reasons why I bought a SEGA console; There was a random screenshot of the game in a Mega-Drive brochure, although I didn't know what the game was called it reminded me of The Maze of Galious for the MSX.

Going to be a great weekend when splash wave release a video. Seriously you guys are like the only ones who go into such detail even the small ones and it so amazing
First video I've seen from this channel and it covers one of my favourite series of all time. Wonderboy in Monsterland was the first game I ever finished way back in the arcade and I got to about world 7 in the first Wonderboy game. I've played every version of the wonderboy games including Monster World IV. I always felt that the wonderboy series has the potential to become something big like legend of Zelda. I would love to see a 3D version of Wonderboy in the future. Awesome video.
What an amazing work you did here! As a brazilian and a Master System / Mega Drive owner back then, Wonderboy is one of my favorite games and seeing it on this video brings back many good memories :)
6:15 suddenly I get where have I seen this game before! in Brazil, we had an amazing Sega distributor called Tec Toy among other amazing things, they did a new skin of this game (like Nintendo switched Oki Doki character for Mario characters) for a popular comic book character called Mônica at the time, we simply couldn't believe a brazilian character had her own game!
Love the presentation as usual! It's always so exciting seeing videos that feel like full productions with thought and effort put into the visuals. You're one of the best of the best!
It's funny....only two days ago I was talking to a friend about how many hours I had sunk into Wonderboy III : The Dragon's Trap as a teenager, and now this comes out...perfect timing.
What a wonderful little documentary. I was a Nes kid growing up but my cousin had a master system with Dragons Trap and man when i played that for the first time i could not believe it and was maybe the first time in my life i ever felt envy. What a game, what a series and to hear of the companies passion to make these games special was wonderful.
Thanx for your dedication en in depth info about these kind of games. I realy enjoy your content and graphics! Now I want to play the whole serie of Wonderboy 😄
Not only the amount of information you could pull out about these old titles, but also the sheer volume of 3D models you bring to each video is simply phenomenal. High quality content, right here.
Never got to experience these games as a child, but as a teenager I fell in love with the Wii port of Wonder Boy in Monster World, then later played the Dragon's Trap. Was beyond stoked when I found out they were makin' a remake of Dragon's Trap.
It still bugs me that Monster World 4 was the only Wonderboy game unreleased in the states & I'll never understand why. It's one of the most fun & gorgeous looking games on the Megadrive & would have been an instant classic on the Genesis. It is the very best game in the series imo.
Amazing work on this! I knew about Wonder Boy’s history, but its Monster World spin-off series has always been a blind spot for me. Thanks for putting this video together, you did great work and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish!
dang i did not know anything about this game before watching this video but apparently i've had it on my wishlist for awhile, anyways, really interesting to hear about it's history, really inspiring
This was fantastic - I was a Master System kid and the Wonder Boy series was my favorite. I loved every one of them, and I loved how each game was wildly different than the last. This does such an amazing job of providing the context around the design and art decisions made in each of the games, and how the series evolved with the team's interests and changes in technology. I just bought the Wonder Boy III remake on Switch yesterday, and to have this incredible documentary come out the next day feels like a surprise Christmas gift.
I would REALLY love to hear why we never got Monster World 4 outside of Japan. Such an amazing game & most of the world didn't get to experience it til recently, and it's a damn shame. The game deserved better.
I was really blown away by the editing of this video and how well everything flowed together. I remember stumbling across these games in a sega emulator a long time ago and played several of them. I was so confused by the varied titles though. Thanks for putting some context to an old memory.
Great vid. WB3: Dragon's Trap is still my fave, besides Monster Boy which I think managed to capture the magic of the classics while updating the series for a modern audience.
Well now, looks like Mecha Dragon is another secret Godzilla character cameo. That's straight-up Gigan right there. This series has been on my backburner for a while now, but I think you moved it up a few notches.
Once again your production levels are stunning, crisp, and a joy to watch. Not only that, Wonder Boy in Monster World for the Genesis is truly one of my best childhood memories. We were spoiled to have such a beautiful game back in the day. As always, looking forward to your next video - hope you guys get more subs! You deserve it!!
The Wonderboy titles in the Mega Drive will always have a special place in my heart. I managed to play them as a kid, but my English wasn't any good at the time (I'm from Argentina). Later when I was on my 20s I was able to fully enjoy them, and to this day I consider them some of the best games on that console. Funny enough, I'm quite fond of the original 4 titles of Adventure Island as well, with III being my favorite Famicom game ever. Master Higgins, Asha or Shion are some of my favorite videogame protagonists 😁
Thank you so much. Wonderboy 3 is quite literally one of a few of my favourite games of all time, right next to Thief (the Metal Age, and the Dark Project). I'm savouring this video. I watched a bit over lunch and I'm going to watch the rest in the evening as I wind down for the night. It's so inspriational hearing the back story, as a video game developer myself, it shows me that yes, i'm not totally crazy for wanting to do the graphics and music for my games, not just the coding. And all these years I've been pronouncing it "West-One!"
I don't look forward to many videos but ever since the Castle of Illusion episode and the clear time and effort put in, I will always grab snacks and just enjoy these videos. Cheers.
I've been a fan since playing MW4 back in 2020 and this video really helped me fully understand the loops and turns of this franchises history. Have played most of them now and enjoyed the Asha remake. A wonderful series
Having focused on the masterful quality of this video in my last comment, this one is about what was achieved in Wonder Boy 4. It looks like it was on different hardware, and like the first Rocket Knight Adventure and Thunder Force IV for the Genesis, the later of which you reviewed for your unbelievably high quality, and severely underrated channel, there’s a great deal of animated line scrolling in the background that gives these games a sense of depth even in a standstill. It’s shocking how few Genesis games use this nearly processor free feature it had. It’s also shocking how few games use the extra channels of sound that you enlightened everyone to in both parts of the making of Streets Of Rage 2. Watching your making of Mortal Kombat, then seeing Sega Lord X review the fan remake of Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition for the Genesis was shocking. They used the limited pallets perfectly, all of the arcade animations were present, and the gameplay, which Ed Boon said was nearly arcade accurate on the original Genesis port were all intact. All of the arcade voice samples were present, with every sound channel in use, and the pit was also fully restored. It’s hard to explain what it felt like to see that all of that would’ve been possible on the Genesis. No assists chips were used and it’s even possible to transfer to a regular, fully playable cart. It’s actually roughly the size of the Genesis port of Super Street Fighter 2. There are so many things that I’ve learned from your videos about the way the NES, Super NES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, and even the PS-One, through your Castlevania Symphony of the Night video. Your videos explain why certain limitations were able to be circumvented through clever programming. As always, thanks and best wishes for your contributions to the You Tube classic gaming community.
this is just incredible work! nothing but love and respect for your whole team! thanks for this video btw, I never knew anything about these games, only the American versions of Adventure Island!
You've made me want to play Monster World IV, the only wonder boy I haven't played yet. Looks so damn beautiful. Thanks again for this astonishingly well put together video!

Not anymore I think but it used to be for far too long.
Given the video quality and the number of followers compared with the number of views, I guess that the main culprit would be the RUclips Algorithm.

I've never heard of the game but this was very interesting and well done! Thanks for the informative video.
Please keep up the good work. I really look forward to these videos.
This was such a fun video to watch!
I'm planning to pick up the new Wonder Boy collection on switch and play these games
Such gorgeous music wonderboy had, ive truly missed them! Thank you for covering such a gem with so much detail!
One of the best videos I've watched in a long while. So much care and detail into every second of this video. Amazing job!
Strafefox Thank you for this classic game feature i've been a fan of it since the beginning... :D Great vids.. Again over and over. love this channel.
Great vid. WB3: Dragon's Trap is still my fave, besides Monster Boy which I think managed to capture the magic of the classics while updating the series for a modern audience.
I can't get over how cute the art looks in this series
Well now, looks like Mecha Dragon is another secret Godzilla character cameo. That's straight-up Gigan right there.
This series has been on my backburner for a while now, but I think you moved it up a few notches.
Once again your production levels are stunning, crisp, and a joy to watch. Not only that, Wonder Boy in Monster World for the Genesis is truly one of my best childhood memories. We were spoiled to have such a beautiful game back in the day. As always, looking forward to your next video - hope you guys get more subs! You deserve it!!
Wow, to think Monster World had a lot of really well thought-out lore! This is incredible!
Fantastic production, my dude! Really enjoyed it! This is top-tier, as usual :)
I didn't know about this series. It looks amazing and fun. I'll check it out. Amazing work on the video guys
I don't think I ever played one of the games (I was a Nintendo kid) - yet, I still love watching these videos for their impressive quality!👍
this is just incredible work! nothing but love and respect for your whole team! thanks for this video btw, I never knew anything about these games, only the American versions of Adventure Island!
You've made me want to play Monster World IV, the only wonder boy I haven't played yet. Looks so damn beautiful. Thanks again for this astonishingly well put together video!
Why did I not get this video on my feed 😭😭 can’t believe I’m only watching this 3 months later. Huge fan of your work StrafeFox, keep it up :)
Thanks! That's great to hear. and new videos are on the way :)
