    Honestly, this is the crispiest redesign I've seen from a single person. I literally thought this was an Anbernic from the thumbnail and it nails the look of 98-04 handheld aesthetics. Looks massively like a professionally made, official followup to Neo Geo Pocket Color. The volume wheel is a nice touch. It's a subtle playfulness that isn't gaudy. This is a superb build.

      Which other redesigns do you like that aren't from a single person?

  • @lasagnapapa
    @lasagnapapa 8 месяцев назад +29

    Let me just say, and I don't want to come across in a wrong way.
    This is not only the coolest and most practical redesign for a handheld I have seen, not to mention the premium and elegant design.
    But I'd also like to point out that you are the most authentic people I've seen in this genre. Your hands shake and your voice cracks, and you don't hide that.
    At risk of coming across as judgemental, I'm actually appreciative of that much more! My voice cracks, and my hand shakes like crazy, and I repair and build consoles myself.
    It's always frustrating to see someone do something like this so effortlessly in higher budget channels, where they just kind of do whatever they were doing and pull it off,
    and when I try to copy them or follow along, I'm met with constant issues, frustrations, and crazy handshakes that often result in burning myself or messing up a solder.
    You showing your countless revisions, your errors, and just being authentic really makes me feel like anyone can do these mods, and anyone is capable of doing something cool.
    So for that, I'm subbing. Cause this is the kind of content I wanna see. Raw passion, mixed with a "fine I'll do it myself" attitude.

    I'd love to hear the justification for making the volume wheel so front and center. It's practically as visually important as a face button, even though it's more of a secondary part of the functionality, less important than even a start or select button, I'd say.

    • @lordmarculus4747
      @lordmarculus4747 Месяц назад

      Right next to the B button. Right where the right thumb would be resting. Insane.

  • @Brodensson
    @Brodensson 8 месяцев назад +101

    This is amazing! My only criticism from a practicality and aesthetic standpoint is that the volume wheel looks like it's going to be in the way and prone to getting knocked during gameplay. Maybe turn that into a sliding switch on the side, or side volume buttons like on a DSi? In any case, an awesome project, looking forward to seeing where it goes!

    • @leggomyfroggo
      @leggomyfroggo  8 месяцев назад +27

      Thanks! That was the initial thought, but space on the sides is tight, and doing it on the curved bottom edge would have been a nightmare. In practice, it doesn't really get in the way, and it's a very firm fit, so it's not getting knocked off. And I like it as a decorative element, haha.

    • @bankbank

      @@leggomyfroggo Would've it been possible to put the volume wheel in an indent like start and select? or is the pot too tall? Just a lower profile/seated in an indent would've really helped how it looks and practicality.

    FINALLY, someone else with the objectively correct take that the GBA has the best form factor out of the entire Gameboy line -- i mean, i don't even have large hands and even i find the GBA SP to be cramped! This is an elegant build and a very well produced video. Your explanations are very clear and the narration in general is really charming. This was a very easy like and sub for me. May the almighty algorithm give you momentum 🙏

    I have a wide emulation handheld, but I was nostalgic for the vertical design of the original game boy so I bought the vertical version of the same emu handheld. Turns out the vertical design was way too small for my huge hands and made them cramp up horribly. Wide is absolutely the way to go. So much more room to grip.

    Good work man. I think the smaller form factor allows a higher level of long play comfortability. Like the PowKiddy RGB30. At first glance they seem small and strangely shaped but the ergonomics are very effective. As far as the device as a whole and it's build quality I believe you've got something very special here. Keep up your work and experimentation. You're a blessing to the maker community.

    This has to be the coolest most practical and most elegant mod I have ever seen. I congratulate and thank you for sharing!
    In your future updates please don't change the form (at least not much - if you have to) as it is perfect and froggish :-)
    What you could change in my humble opinion is the volume wheel (put it on the side for example), add the IR as you mentioned and maybe have the option of ordering a back that protects the label/sticker on the cartridge.
    I am anxious to see where this will go in the future!

    I like the fact that you combined the form factor of the GBA and used the tactile buttons of the GBA SP. Also the Stereo Sound and the USB-C charging port is a nice addition.
    The Gameboy Color has a unique design. I like the parabola of the screen you've captured on the shell. But the Gameboy Color has many other design features that make it so iconic. I think you should focus on the form-finding now.
