Every time Larry Potterfield says "It's a Simple Task"... he means it's a "Simple Task" for a MASTER of his level, and those are few and far between. Love watching this MASTER at work.
Thanks Larry. I've been a model maker, engraver, and special order jeweler for 25+ years. I've done wood carvings and have been an amateur gunsmith for several years now too. I really appreciate your attention to detail. Projects like this are very labor intensive but in the end the quality of the finished product makes it all worth while. Your videos are great.
I love how in every video he has exactly what he needs to do the job. Most of which is amost always something you will have to order from midway.. who knows it could be cheaper and easier to just buy one already done.. All that said gun smithing as a whole is a true art form well done larry..
I always loved a nicely checkered stock... he sold me on the kit. So, I'll see just how simple this is or isn't. I've got all the time in the world to master this skill & bluing is second nature already. :) It's a good job for veterans & all because many our applications do not make it into the prospect lists.
Today is the day I realize what it means when people have said all my life that "patience is a virtue". I would have never undertaken a task that took more than a weekend before this point in my life. Now that I am older (30's), and see time pass so quickly compared to what it used to, I see how powerful spending time gradually working can pay off. When I was younger time seemed to pass by so slowly, and a month long project was unimaginable. It all makes sense to me now. Fantastic stuff, I hope to do my own project like this one day.
I am not mad that RUclips recommended this to me when I've never watched any gunsmithing videos. Though, I will definitely try this out on knife handles when I start as a blacksmith soon.
This is something that people (a lot of young people) need to take more note of....countless hours to result in something truly remarkable and a masterpiece one of a kind
It’s nice to see someone who knows what he is doing. I also refinish many old guns. I don’t have a shop like Larry’s, but I hand polish the metal, fit stocks, and checker the wood. I have to send out the metal for blueing, as I don’t have the means to do it. I really get a kick out of these clowns on you tube who do “restorations” on old guns, who use cold blue, don’t recut the checkering, and don’t get the pits and dents out of the metal and wood. Calling them restorations is a joke and an insult to someone like Larry who really do it right.
Do I own a firearm? Nope. Do I plan to do any gunsmithing? Nope. Am I strangely addicted to watching a craftsman work? Yup. Nice to see methods and techniques being kept alive.
After watching this I won't complain too much about the craftsman's rate for checkering. I'd like to do it myself but a reality check tells me I won't. These are great vids, thanks Larry!
Holy cow man, thats beautiful and im sure is much more comfortable on the hand, but i was getting anxiety attacks just watching YOU do it lol. If i ever make a stock i dont know if ill do this hahaha.
Reminds me of my grandparents Parkers,I sold them a while back for what I considered big money...I'm still not sure if it was a wise move as they were incredibly beautiful guns
@@bryanmartinez6600 Don't feel bad, he screwed up ALOT in the video. He is careful to only focus on the better looking areas, but you can see plenty of screw ups if you watch the video.
"Kind of like riding a 4-wheeler over a frozen corn field" Now that is one hell of a metaphor!
something we can all imagine i'm sure
Draven Kind of like catching spinning axes during an intense team fight.
That’s actually an analogy.
Actually it’s a simile

These longer gunsmithing videos are much more helpful than the older, shorter ones. Stick with these.
I really enjoyed this.
hehe wyd here
Wasn't that amazing. The time and the patience it takes to accomplish something as seemingly simple as checkering.
I bet you do because all you do is stupid gun videos now.
i guess you are the reason this is in my recommandation, and i love it
Steve Reynold are you sure ?
Every time Larry Potterfield says "It's a Simple Task"... he means it's a "Simple Task" for a MASTER of his level, and those are few and far between. Love watching this MASTER at work.
Now I TOTALLY understand why pressed checkering is SO much cheaper. Amazing!
Honestly pressed checering is better
@@MAWW-tc2zz better how? Trying to decide between the 2

"like riding a four wheeler across a frozen corn field" haha! Larry Potterfied you're the man! always smiling... even whilst talking !
Wow, now that is impressive patience, and attention to detail. Absolutely incredible!
What’s gratifying is watching you demonstrate your expert craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing sir!
From what I know of knifemaking and cost... This workmanship has to be hundreds for just the stockwork alone.
Don't overlook the tons of skill and talent seen in this mans work.
Highly under-rated video and inspiring too.
Man Larry is a gun boss any broken gun he touches turns to gold
You truly have the patience of a saint. Wow. I love watching a true Craftsman at work.
At Motel 6 we'll leave the light on for you.
Homebrew Horsepower an XJJJJJJJJ
Lol, Is it really the same guy? The background music almost matches too.
😂😂😂

I don't think it's something you'd do to save a buck. You wouldn't buy the tools if you only needed to replace the furniture on one old gun.
Sir, you are truly a master craftsman! AMAZING!
Wow I have two old stocks with checkering and now much more respect for how they got there! TY!

Now it's illegal to this in california they say it improved your aim by 120% and reduced recoil recovery.
the whole world knows that california is fvcked up anyways
"those lines look really aggressive, must be an assault rifle."
Shhh don't give them anything else to ban!?
I know this is a joke but I wouldn't be surprised
Think about it this way, do you really want californians to have guns?
Absolutely incredible work! Is there anything in the Gunsmithing world, that this guy can't do?? VERY IMPRESSIVE Mr. Potterfield 👍 👍
Wow, this is some craftsmanship.
I had never thought about this checkering, or how much work went into it.

My lord, the patience it requires to be an authentic gunsmith... incredible 👁👁
This looks so satisfying... I could do this for years
The amazing thing is that the entire process took him just under 10 minutes! That's talent.
Beautiful workmanship very nice.
There's not much Larry can't do. Amazing
The four wheeler across a frozen corn field earned a like from me and experience I can share
I allready thought a lot of work would go into this but it´s even more.
Crazy. I never knew you needed so many specialized tools just to checker a hardwood stock
Wow...... the patience! Incredible talent.

"the crossing lines are much harder. kinda like ridding a four-wheeler in a frozen cornfield" love to Larry from sweden!
Wonderful, wonderful video, good sir. Cheers!
this was beautiful to watch
Cool video! Always wondered how checkering was layed out and cut. Great Job, it'd be really awesome if you made a metal engraving video!
Thanks for the videos. This is very tedious work.
This was such a pleasure to watch amazing precision 👍🏽
This takes skill!!! Great job Larry!
Truly labor of love
We'll done Larry. Awesome skills dude.
Sir, you are really great & genius, you are a master of gunsmithing.
Came here by random dont know jack about guns but the checker tool looks so useful no idea such a thing existed.

Beautiful just don't have that much patience

Parabens,realmente vc é muito proficional.
This takes Larry only 20 minutes to complete
Editing. What you don't see is the prep, most of the checkering or the finish. No way that can be done in 20 minutes.
@Benjamin Hughey I heard it was the nail of his little finger!
It was actually done in 15 minutes with his fingernail clippings!!
@Benjamin Hughey after taking a long bath!
Nah he used his mind to complete it in 4 seconds
Good stuff!
this looks incredibly frustrating.
You have to have patience and have to enjoy doing it it seems pretty easy also pretty cool to watch
