Great vid, super informative! You've taken away the mystery of 'is this actually any better than a P16?' and if you're using it with a hub I think it is.
Luke Russe thanks Luke! I think even without the hub, you can still do quite a bit with this thing. I think a combined P16/DP48 system is gonna be the ticket for a lot of people. Best of both worlds!
I got my DP48 on Saturday (HUB4 is not available by now) and did some connection tests: X32 AES50-A - S16 - S16 - DP48: DP48 gets all signals routed to AES50 A out, but no channel information X32 AES50-A - DP48 - S16 - S16: DP48 gets recognized by X32; gets channel information and audio. S16 can't communicate to X32 X32 AES50-A - S16 - S16 / X32 AES50-B - DP48: full communication to S16 and DP48 Looks like S16 isn't able to pass channel information of output channels, whereas DP48 can't pass audio of AES50 input channels. So to have full functionality one would have to run two ethernet cables between mixer and stage. Workaround (if your musicians can live with the 16 channels routed for P16 and 16 additional channels) : directly plug DP48 to mixer to get channel information (and/or to broadcast group assingments), than connect mixer to stage box(es) and the DP48 to the last one. The channel information will still be available.
You also make have noticed that the first 16 channels on your DP48 are the 16 outputs of your S16's. This is why I think most people will be running their DP48's on AES50B. Full control and no compromises.
Looking at firmware 4.1 there is a new menu in Library called AES50 where you can set up group names and pre-populate the groups with channels based on your AES A or B routing. Easiest done from the Mix Software.
Richard K ya, I played with that a bit, but its going to be so nice to broadcast the groupings to all of the DP48’s instead of assigning them on every single unit! :D

In the manual it stated the the first DP 48 could be powered through AES 50 port if connected directly, could you confirm this? Also I’m assuming I could run the DP48 off is AES 50 B port and my stage box off ofA ? Thanks!
I think the manual is referring to the first DP48 on each of the four Hub 4 ports. There is no POE over AES50 ports on the back of the X32/M32 consoles. Yes, you can connect the DP48's to AES50B and connect your stagebox to AES50A, that is how I currently have it set up and it works great!
Can I connect a DP48 to the AES A or B port on my existing SD16 (or any) stage boxes without using the hub4? It would be great if you did a video configuration which most X32 users are likely to do.
ezravg99 you can connect it to the B port on the SD16 (A port will be taken as it uses that to talk to your console) the B then become a “thru” port and will pass the AES50 signal. However, I don’t think this is how most people will use this as it comes with a bunch of compromises (which I mention in this video) the way I demonstrated is the way I think most people will want to set it up.

So yes, you can use DP48 and P16 simultaneously, but the last 16 channels on your DP48 will be shared with the 16 on your P16's. I don't believe you can use the DP48's with the X18, you need AES50, they will not work off of the ultranet port, so no, I wouldn't get them if that's what you're using as your mixer. Take care! :D
I currently use the Behringer p16 along with the Behringer x32. Unfortunately, I do not have any more room on my p16 system. I understand the Midas system offers additional space, but I only see 12 ports on the system. Help, Thanks
I think what you're seeing is the 12 buttons. These are groups and you can assign any of the 48 channels to any of the twelve groups and mix/pan those channels independently inside that group. For instance, let's say your drums have kick, snare, under snare, tom 1, tom 2, and overheads. All can be added to a single button and panned wherever you want at whatever volume you want. This is user-adjustable. Plus each DP48 has two mixes Mix A and Mix B, so you can have two musicians on one unit controlling two completely separate mixes of 48 channels. They are vastly more powerful than the P16's, but also vastly more complicated. I would recommend a blended system where DP48's are used with musicians that can handle and would benefit from it and P16's are used for less experienced musicians that can get a decent mix without overwhelming them.
Antonio Tzul There does seem to be a difference in sound quality and you also have a ton more ways to achieve better sound quality via access to 48 channels of audio, eq, reverb, and compression on each of the 12 groups, and full control that you just don’t get on the P16’s (especially when your channel count gets higher and you have to start making some sacrifices on the P16’s like grouping your drums.) Keep in mind that these are more difficult to use than the P16’s, so I think each have their place (even if you’re using both in the same setup) I could very well see our bands using a mix of P16’s and DP48’s depending on the need of each musician.
@@ChurchTechTalks thanks for answering I appreciate it .and one more thing ,2 musician can use 1 dp48 at the same time, right or I miss understood about that,if yes ,so they have two headphone out ?
Antonio Tzul yes, each box allows you to mix two separate stereo mixes (Mix A and Mix B) and yes, there are two headphone outputs, one for Mix A and one for Mix B. Hope that helps!
I’ve used the p16’s and found they work pretty good. This looks pretty great too. We have recently been using a router connected to our stage box and using the MX-Q and M32-Q phone apps to adjust our IEMs using our phones. I’m sending linked stereo mix buses out the 8 XLR outputs to each individual and they are adjusting their IEM levels with the apps on their phones. Is there any downside to the method I’m using? We have the eq preset how we like it and use our phones to adjust IEM levels. This unit you are demonstrating and the P16 just seems really complicated to use during a live show compared to the simplicity of the phone app. We have however only used our set up in rehearsal at our rehearsal space. I’m wondering if you have any experience with the MX-Q and M32-Q phone apps method and if so did you find them reliable for live shows and performances?
Bobby Uterus the setup you’re using is a common one and very easy for musicians. The only issue is that there’s no way to actually test reliability until you’re at the venue and the house is packed. There might be a bunch of routers in the area, a bunch of phones crowding the spectrum, TV signals interfering with your wireless rig. It all just gets complicated when you go wireless with everything and reliability definitely takes a hit over traditional wired products. Having said that, it sounds like you guys value simplicity and ease of use so I wouldn’t switch you to DP48’s, I’d probably just have P16’s on hand as a back up. Good luck!
Thanks for the quick reply! What you just confirmed is my big fear. I’m really wondering about reliability of the phones being able to adjust levels at show. I actually watched your video a few more times and looked at the control lay out. The unit actually seems fairly simple. Way more streamlined than the p16. The LCD seems to makes a world of difference I’m actually very intrigued now.
Bobby Uterus The initial setup *can* be tedious (though their are ways around that like broadcasting) but if you’re using this for one band, presumably, inputs wouldn’t change all that much. They could be a killer option for you!
Will I need to get 2 of the Hub4 if I want to use 6-8 of the DP48 utilizing POE ?? It looks to me as if you only had 1 HUB4, that you could power only 4 units and then you would have to daisy chain them and use the power adapters. Does this sound correct??
Jason Patzke yes that is correct, but remember that each unit is used for two musicians, so you would only need two hubs if you cant for some reason provide power to the daisy chained units AND plan on having bands larger than 8 musicians. For example, if your band is 12 musicians and you want to run 6 DP48’s all POE, then you would need a second Hub 4.
Not needed to connect to an M32r, you can plug a dp48 straight into the back of the M32r, but you won’t get several features that the Hub4 adds (like POE, returns and outputs for IEMs...etc)
Yes, but it's not super straightforward. I believe analog outputs carry AES50 ch33-ch48 by default. If you press and hold the "Port 1-4 To Outputs" button, audio from the DP48's plugged into those ports is routed to the analog outputs (this allows you to get stereo mix back to the hub for IEMs)
How did you get the channel names to show up on the dp 48 , I have tried everything and mine does not display channel names. I am not using a hub but am sending out from the AES50 B port on my x32 rack.
Church Tech Talks yeah I had remote on but turns out I did not have the latest firmware update after updated firmware all was well thanks for the response.
The DP48 and Hub4 aren't made to be connected to an interface, though you could daisy chain a DN9630 to use your console as an interface, but in that setup, it would simply be "in the chain".
11:22 time mark when you plug in the new cable...you are asking for huge problems....you have got to have the drain wire on each end of your cable grounded to the Ethercon shell...neither your A or B cable have the ethercon shell...this is how you blow up your ports, and it's well documented. Hard to take the video seriously once I see this...run spec cable to avoid problems.
As you can see, the unit wasn’t even rack mounted either, we were a bit eager to get it all up and running and didn’t have ethercon on hand so I decided to risk it, low chance of issues in a highly controlled environment, but you’re right, they should be Cat5e STP with ethercon connectors. Always should read the manual and run spec. Do as I say, not as I do 😉

Stage Connect is a new protocol that Music Group created that is actually pretty freaking cool. Basically it's a digital signal of up to 32 channels over a single XLR cable. Supposedly they'll be launching more products with this protocol (stage boxes, breakout snakes...etc) and I believe it's an open protocol so possibly 3rd parties could make products as well.
@@ChurchTechTalks If that's the case... should I: 1.) Wait for the Wing to get a "Rack" version for my limited space? OR 2.) Will it work with the X32 Rack if I buy it for Black Friday?
@@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios I don’t know their product release schedule so I don’t know if or when a rack version of the wing would come out. I know that there was a factory fire in China and most pro audio companies have been effected, so my money would be that a lot of new products won’t be shipping until next year at the earliest. In a word: yes. You can get much better mixes out of the DP48 due to higher channel count and more dsp power (comps, reverbs, eqs on every group)
Great videos ! One question is there difference in sound quality .I just about to tried personal monitor which one do you recommend ,P16 or mp48
Antonio Tzul There does seem to be a difference in sound quality and you also have a ton more ways to achieve better sound quality via access to 48 channels of audio, eq, reverb, and compression on each of the 12 groups, and full control that you just don’t get on the P16’s (especially when your channel count gets higher and you have to start making some sacrifices on the P16’s like grouping your drums.)
Keep in mind that these are more difficult to use than the P16’s, so I think each have their place (even if you’re using both in the same setup) I could very well see our bands using a mix of P16’s and DP48’s depending on the need of each musician.
@@ChurchTechTalks yes , thank you, God bless you !
how personal monitor i can connect in one ethernet port 1 to 8 without using electrcity in Dp 48 ?
I wanted to ask if your using the DP-48 via the AES50 B port, can you not bypass the Midas Hub completely and link the DP-48 with each other?
Jonathan Laing I haven’t tried that yet, but I believe so, you’d just need to power them separately.
@@ChurchTechTalks Yes, each DP48 will have its own power supply plugged in, as well as the daisy-chained Cat 5 cable connections.
Thank you for the review! Do I need a Hub 4 to use the DP48s? Thank you!
Nope. They work without the Hub 4.
@@ChurchTechTalks thanks for the answer!
Is a hub needed to connect the DP48 to the M32r? Or can you connect directly from an M32r to the DP48?
Not needed to connect to an M32r, you can plug a dp48 straight into the back of the M32r, but you won’t get several features that the Hub4 adds (like POE, returns and outputs for IEMs...etc)
Can you send audio from the console (outputs/busses/matrices) to the outputs of the hub?
Yes, but it's not super straightforward. I believe analog outputs carry AES50 ch33-ch48 by default. If you press and hold the "Port 1-4 To Outputs" button, audio from the DP48's plugged into those ports is routed to the analog outputs (this allows you to get stereo mix back to the hub for IEMs)
How did you get the channel names to show up on the dp 48 , I have tried everything and mine does not display channel names. I am not using a hub but am sending out from the AES50 B port on my x32 rack.
Make sure your DP48's have "Remote ON" (this is found in the last setup page) otherwise it won't get any of the info you broadcast!
Church Tech Talks yeah I had remote on but turns out I did not have the latest firmware update after updated firmware all was well thanks for the response.
could you do a video of connecting it to an interface?
Do as I say, not as I do 😉
Hey Scott We got the DP48 and can not get it to connect to our midas Pro 2 any suggestions?
The first thing I would have you do is confirm you’re on the latest firmware for both the Pro 2 and the DP48. In the meantime, I’m reaching out to my contacts at Music Group to ask details.
@@ChurchTechTalks Finally got a hold of Midas Looks like we have to have a Bridge to make it work with the Pro series another $1400 we do not have. Really enjoy your videos would love to connect with you some time.
@@ridgeministriescedarridgec5031 interesting. Must have to do with sample rates I’m assuming? Seeing as how the Pro series desks are all at 96k while the DP48 only works 44.1k/48k.
@@ridgeministriescedarridgec5031 and thanks! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my channel. I’ve got more videos coming up soon that you’ll probably be interested in if you liked this one! Would love to connect sometime.
Nice video. Cool overview of the DP48. You're background track is super annoying though. Way too much bass in that kick drum. Gave me a headache.
Josh Swing Lozada ya, seems that was a common opinion. Thanks for the feedback. I’ve backed it off in my latest vids :)
Is been a while and I am still waiting for that video also 2 months.......
Doing my best! It took a long time to film and editing is taking a lot longer than expected. Doing this in my spare time, which I haven't had a whole lot of lately! Corona virus isn't helping :(
Any idea on price of the Hub4?
Fremont Presbyterian nope! Hoping to find that out soon myself!
What is "Stage Connect"?
Stage Connect is a new protocol that Music Group created that is actually pretty freaking cool. Basically it's a digital signal of up to 32 channels over a single XLR cable. Supposedly they'll be launching more products with this protocol (stage boxes, breakout snakes...etc) and I believe it's an open protocol so possibly 3rd parties could make products as well.
@@ChurchTechTalks If that's the case... should I:
1.) Wait for the Wing to get a "Rack" version for my limited space?
OR
2.) Will it work with the X32 Rack if I buy it for Black Friday?
@@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios I don’t know their product release schedule so I don’t know if or when a rack version of the wing would come out. I know that there was a factory fire in China and most pro audio companies have been effected, so my money would be that a lot of new products won’t be shipping until next year at the earliest. Stage Connect is not on the X32 rack, but it does support AES50. As I don’t know all of your needs, I can’t give you a good recommendation, but I would definitely plan on purchasing something that is already out, maybe even looking at used gear, since supply lines of already out products may even be effected.
@@ChurchTechTalks Thank you so very much. :-D
No one cares about unboxings anymore. We just need the info on the product. Thanks for the review.
Agreed! I tried to make this less about unboxing and include some actual helpful info that wasn't online before. I have a video in the cue with a lot more info, but with coronavirus impacting our church so drastically, I have had my hands full and haven't been able to get that out just yet, but it's coming.
What is "StageConnect""?!?!?!
TheRangeControl it’s a new protocol that Music Group created. Pretty cool. 32 channels over a standard XLR cable.
:)
You should look into the camera when speaking, not off-camera toward a mic or whatever. Eye contact. You want to make it appear as if you are addressing your audience. Very distracting the way you're facing off-camera.
Les Kanekuni haha fair enough. I’ll tell you what, you subscribe to my channel, and I’ll look right in the lens next video. 😁👍🏻
If he's using a phone and looking at the screen, In wide screen the camera ends up off to one side he would have to look sideways at the camera and not the screen which is hard to get your brain to do when your image is right there.
