She has a right to speak up, without being intimidated.
Yes, the tenant certainly has the right to take her issues with repairs to city building inspectors, see if she can get pro bono legal help to fight the eviction, but I think media coverage has blown their coverage out of proportion, complicating some possibly simple solutions that work for both parties.
She does have the right to speak up, but then he can also ask her to leave so he can make the repairs because of how severe they are.
He can ask her to leave for the repairs to be done, however if there is a lease, I believe he has to find other accommodations for her (hotel, a different apt.). There might be different rules for different states. She should get more information from an attorney.

That's how it is here. Landlords live in mansions, while renting house that should be considered condemned...the landlords also let the outside deteriorate so they get lower property assessments. My friends step dad is a landlord so I got literal inside information.... But this lady got lucky, they burned my friends house down after evicting her to get insurance bc they couldn't afford to fix it. My friend quit paying rent and was even sued and her landlord won and even took her phone with text messages proving they were going to burn it down but bc she didn't have a lawyer, they weren't allowed in

The way the law was set up, if they refused to make repairs to the damages in the property, the tenant can take half the rent money and fix it and turn in receipt with remaining 50% of the rent, equalling the total rent of five hundred with FREE labor and no taxes or indicators anything was done, bc the outside looks like shit, red hideous roofs to depreciate value.. while charging over 500-1500 rent and high utilities.... They own everything. a bank, liquor stores, weed dispensary, utility company, lawyer's, teachers, cops, dealers. A lawyer here has a kid that sold weed when I was in junior high, another that's now a probation offer that's my age and I know clients he's had lie on the stand to get disability checks, advising them to check into mental institutions and take "whatever" medicine they give to get disability checks. Two on the last one.... Their dispensary is by a high school football field... Did I mention they forced me to check into a hospital or I'd be thrown in jail with no bond?? Handcuffed me naked to the bed of a jail bed and pretty much me on display for other inmate's to look at?? @@johnpatz8395 I can’t agree with you more. It looks like she lived there for 20 years (according to the go fund me). She went to the news and code enforcement now there needs to be a contingency plan when code enforcement deems the place to be uninhabitable. Why not exercise the option to break the lease and move? Furthermore, It seems like the pipe damage might have been from the freeze we experienced a few months ago. I also had a leak due to a broken pipe but thankfully the damage was not this extensive and was fixed in a timely fashion.

She can get a almost brand new apartment in metairie for $800. per month,. I think he so crooked and guilty of using the money for himself. I hope she Sue's him.

When the elderly, orphans, and widows are a burden to the church (members or not), you are NOT a church! (1 Tim.) If you ever were a church over being a business slumlord your candlestick has been removed. (Rev 2).
If you are a Christian, you are part of the church. When the bible speaks of the church, it means all the people who belong to the body of Christ, not just people who attend a specific congregation. Now that you know about this lady, you are more than free to help pay for costs to repair her apartment. The charge to the church to take care of elderly and widows is not limited to a specific congregation. It applies to the WHOLE church, meaning all Christians; if you are a Christian, then you too have the charge to help persons such as this widow. It is pretty clear that the rent she pays of only $600 a month is not enough to take care of property maintenance. As a member of the body of Christ, this is an opportunity for you to step up and help out with those costs. There are those who have the unrealistic belief that $600 a month, which was a reasonable rent level about 20 years ago, will continue to be enough to pay taxes, insurance, maintenance costs, etc for a building. It's not enough in today's world. So if the church (defined in the bible as all people who belong to the body of Christ) is going to carry out its responsibility to help widows and orphans, then the church (including those who are commenting here) needs to find a way to help them stay housed - and in some cases, that includes helping pay for repair costs so that landlords can continue to keep the rent low. And yes, $600 a month is low rent. Don't just be a hearer of the word. Be a doer of the word, not just a hearer (James 1:22-25). And if you are not helping this particular woman with her housign problems, I hope you are finding a least one widow or orphan to help. Otherwise, you cannot legitimately claim to be part of the church - and the church is the body of Christ, not just a specific congregation.

"The church" does not mean a specific congregation. Instead, it means the invidivuals who make up the church - those who call themselves believers - are supposed to do what they can to help widows and orphans. It does not mean that Church ABC is now responsible to feed, clothe, and house all widows and children in their vicinity. Money does not fall out of the sky for that purpose, or for any other purpose. It means they may have soup kitchens, children's afterschool programs, backpack giveaways, etc. Jesus made that clear when he said that the poor would always be with us ( Matthew 26:11 ). It means that the church, defined as those who follow Christ (and not those who claim membership in Church ABC or Church GHI or whatever) will always have opporutnities to help those in need. It did NOT mean that each Christian is now individually required to create and maintain buildings and supply food, water, electricity, clothes, etc. where widows and orphans can live. There are some Christians who are called to do that, and they do it well. There are others who have neither the resources nor the calling to do all that. Their calling is to do what they CAN, and not what they CAN'T, to help the poor.

I have sympathy for both. The pastor is trying to fix his church and her apartment, but lacks funds for both. Also, the contractor who left a hole in her apartment is contributing to the mess. The pastor needs to ask for some volunteer help from another church.
I think that's what I'm seeing. It's not so much a slumlord as somebody who doesn't have the dollars to do what needs done. She's paying $200 a month less than the other tenants so it does seem like he had been cutting her a break in the past. But I also agree with her that she shouldn't have to live like that. But then I come back to his side when I look at the idea that if I'm plastered all over the news and told I need to fix it then the only way I can do it is a gut renovation. My big issue is with him not working with her to find a place. The 10-day notice is unacceptable. Where I live if you don't have a lease then they have to give you 60 days written notice. I think he probably did that because he (or more likely his wife) was mad because she put them on the news.

The place should have never be rented
A rent of $600 a month, which is all that she pays, is not enough to keep the property maintained.It is probably best and safest for him to turn the property over to somebody else who has more capital to maintain the property, but the reality is that whoever takes it over is going to have raise the rent to bring in enough money to consistently pay for the taxes, property maintentance/repairs, and the mortgage. We'd all love to live paying only $600 a month for housing but in today's world, that will not be enough income for the building to cover all the needed costs of maintaining a building.
It is sad that people live in such conditions and no one to help. Her next home could be the streets. What a choice she has to make. The pastor I don't believe is rich, seems he's between a rock and hard place. The church is not self sufficient, the rental property is in dire need of repairs to the point of condemnation and the tenants on the verge of being homeless. Tenants accept living conditions because they have no place to go. Thoughts and prayers may not help, maybe a go fund me account?

What kind of scumbag court would sign an eviction notice when a tenant is on the record recently for filing a complaint against the landlord.? This news channel should be asking about that as well. Courts are supposed to protect people from this kind of retaliation eviction. There are plenty of contractors who can work around tenants safely.
That part didn't make sense to me. If she's up to date on her rent, as she said she was, how could he possibly get a 10-day eviction signed by someone?

Do you really think he can take care of that apartment when it is pulling in only $600 a month in rent? That's a rent level from about 20 years ago. There seems to be a very limited understanding here on why low rent apartments fall into disrepair. Rent has to be enough to pay property tax, insurance, mortgage, and repair costs. Have you ever had to call a plumber or electrician to fix something? In today's world, you may pay $300-$500 per visit. The landlord has to use income from the apartment to pay for that. Plus, the mortgage, insurance, and property tax also have to be paid. Are you familiar enough with the economics of his community to realize that the total for those expenses plus either one plumber OR one electrician visit will cost much more than $600 in a month? Money does not grow on trees. He may have been trying to keep the rent low because she is elderly, but the fact of the matter is that he cannot pay for all those property costs if the rent being paid is only $600 per month. The lady may need to apply for public housing or for section 8. And the property owner definitely needs to raise the rents to match what it actually costs to own and maintain a property. Otherwise, where's he supposed to get the money to pay for all those maintenance costs? Again, money doesn't grow on trees.

I volunteer at a church community center in a very poor area in western New York. The tenants of the project live in deplorable, rat, infested, leaky, plumbing apartments. They were just telling me that if they complain, the owners will evict them under the excuse of having to go to do the repairs. Therefore, the tenants are afraid to complain, and have to suck it up and live like that. These are apartments that get huge government subsidies for the tenants. The owners of these projects are from out of state and are basically nothing but slumlords.
