      That still doesn't justify someone living on public land for free. Otherwise, by that logic, I should be able to build a house in a public park and live in it for free paying no property taxes, utilities, or rent. You want to live in your car, then the car needs to be parked in a private lot.

      Living in a van is looked down upon by snooty people, and a retired couple living in an RV is more socially acceptable because they have money. Whomever has more money is the more acceptable one, according to snooty people who sneer their noses while sipping their tea with their pinky high in the air while speaking in a British accent.

      Either one should be acceptable so long as the person follows reasonable rules. For example, trash should be kept in the vehicle and disposed of responsibly. Obviously the same for pee. If your van is large, either park overnight only and be gone by morning, rather than blocking the same house for weeks, or park in a lot or campground where it’s permitted, which might require a fee.

      Go to LA and find out it's a big difference. Some are not using the RVs as crackdens to sell and smoke crack out of. There are those with their RUclips channels that do this and those that work and save on housing... Then there are the other ones we see every day.

      @@FiatVoluntasTua888 The places these squatters are taking over are "public" places - yes, open to everyone, until the squatters decide to "take over". If a few stayed for a night or two, that would be fine, but they pack themselves in like sardines in the prime locations, stay for weeks, and crowd out the public. Rich? I live week to week on Social Security and a small pension. I drive a 10 year old truck that I bought used, my "RV" is a self converted Home Depot enclosed trailer. Quit defending squatters.

These people that want to live in prime locations for weeks/months on end are abusing the intended purpose of the public infrastructure. Stop defending the blatant abuse by these freeloaders. There are plenty of less obvious places they can sleep. Quit playing the "poor" card. It's about respect and not abusing others.

      Good point if people could actually afford houses they wouldn't be forced to live in their cars. I found a documentary series on the subject ,it was very sad. But on the other hand, if the people that live in their cars because there is nowhere else to go suddenly got good jobs and bought houses, those rich idiots would only complain that they had to be nabers.

      People can camp all they want, just not wherever they want. For some of these folks, any rule is one too many. More of that don’t tread on me attitude, run a mock. This can be resolved by simply enforcing the rules as they are written. No overnight camping in the city, period.

      My vehicle is worth almost 30k. Used to do it out of a 1k Corolla. Moving on up!! But even if I sold my car for 28k, it wouldn’t even be enough to cover my other debts, a down payment, a new car because I’ll need that for my job.. so I can’t find a good reason in selling it. It’s a lifeline to me. If I sell it for housing and I get kicked out or fear for my life because my roommate is crazy or something else happens, I’ll have nothing to take refuge in. F that!!

    Been homeless 13 years. Finally saved up for a van and now have the capacity to sell my art. Van life is not a crime. You don't own the streets!

      I’ve had people tell me that living in a vehicle should be illegal because people that live in their vehicle leave garbage. But I live in my vehicle and, not only do I not leave garbage but often I pick up garbage that isn’t mine. People love to make rules and love to tell others what they can and cannot do. They don’t consider the collateral damage that it causes for people who are innocently trying to live a more peaceful, less expensive, simpler existence.

    I've been living in my van for 3 years but am always respectful and considerate of the people who live nearby. I only park on residential streets at night and am gone in the morning. I'm 71 years old can't work and live on S.S. I've got no choice really. I don't blame the ocean beach residents for complaining and I support them. The people living in vans and cars should never cause problems like using the open areas for bathrooms and leaving trash around.

      This is one huge factor that a lot of people overlook there are now an enormous amount of seniors and disabled people having to live this way because the only other option is a cardboard box on the sidewalk!

      I am old and had to move away from my town as the rents went from affordable to ridiculous .
      I have a 2 bedroom 2 bath on a half acre now in Michigan for $700. Rent
      I live by myself.
      I hate it here and regret the move.
      It is better to live in your car in some places than to have a house in others.
      I sharpen knives for a living and travel much.
      It makes no sense to rent an empty house when I can sleep in my truck .
      I am usually the first customer at the coffee shop in the morning spending money.
      I am self employed for most of my life and never had a credit card.
      I was 18 years at my residence in Santa Cruz when disaster struck.
      Covid and evacuations from forest fires .
      I lost everything except my truck .
      Now folk would make me a criminal too .
      I am old and you make me tired of living .
      I am ashamed to be even human .

      I swear i saw a video not too long ago where they said sleeping in your car in CA is illegal. A homeless woman said she was ticketed for sleeping in her car, so now she has to leave her car and sleep outside in a park where crimes happen on the reg.

      It's not great. They'll do everything they can to give you tickets or impound your vehicle if they can. California sucks for this, especially San Diego. The enforcement is a bunch of assholes, and their goal is basically to downgrade you to a tent

    I camp in my Suburban for travel softball. I find a Love's truck stop. They have restrooms and showers. You see other people living in their vehicles there also.

      Those people chose a highly desirable location to illegally camp. They didn’t do that because of housing insecurity. There are plenty of free and inexpensive places to car camp. Most all of us want to enjoy beach front property too. We simply wouldn’t do it illegally and cheat others to get it. The campers should leave at night and come back the next day to give everyone equal access to beach front parking.

      I was fired from the last FOURTEEN jobs I held, for PTSD-related problems.
      An average of 40 Veterans a day commit suicide and there currently are over 35,000 homeless veterans in America.

    I live in my RV. I’ve traveled all over the country. All the laws seem to prohibit sleeping in your vehicle. That is what people object to. That is what our society objects to. Sleeping. As long as you’re not sleeping in your rig, you’re good. Falling asleep is the thing that makes you a criminal in most places. Sleeping is a crime. Which always seemed strange to me because sleeping is about the most harmless thing one can do.

    These “homeowners” are very unmerciful people at this time when we are having a financial “meltdown”; that being said, the nomads need to be entirely respectful of homeowners and not eliminate like dogs on everyone’s property or even public property!
    How about creating campsites with full bathrooms, launder mats and ways for folks to survive? I am a conservative but being a tyrant to less fortunate people is sadly wrong, there has to be some solutions?

      They can go to "formal" camping-allowed parking lots and PAY there to stay overnight. But these clowns are avoiding paying by just parking wherever, and until the signs that say no overnight parking are actually enforced with patrols kicking people out and handing out tickets or impounding, it will never change

    Seems our government is accountable for this. I was living in a one bedroom apartment, my lease was coming up for renewal, I did not renew because it was going up to $1400.00 and I told the manager that I was not paying. So, now I have to live with my son and his significant other, I hate it and he wants me to leave. I live on SS $1086.00 and a small pension. If it wasn’t for him I’d be on the streets with so others but, sometimes I wish I was while living here. By the way, I am 69 yrs old tried to get help from the state and of course I was turned away like so many others.

      Maybe, if they don't make it basically illegal first. They're trying to force people to stay in RV parks, and they'll penalize you and ticket you for public parking wherever they can. It's absolutely sickening. When I'm travelling in mine, I can hardly go a night without police knocking on my window and acting like I'm a criminal. And RV parks charge at least 600-800 a month even for a van, the more expensive ones are over 1000 a month, making it totally pointless. Just like the government wants

    I travel for extended periods in my vehicle. These current "van lifers" are causing the problems. They concentrate on the highly desirable locations, and want the views and convenience without contributing to maintaining the area. Park overnight in the lesser desirable locations, and move regularly. Quit ruining the opportunity for the rest of us.

      Private equity has also been buying up trailer parks and tripling the rents! People are arguing about being able to live in their cars but the real enemy is the terrible way the ownership of residential property has gone into insanely greedy hands

      California also does not zone for low income housing to meet the needs of low income citizens. But everyone working at the restaurants you frequent are low-income. Why make the poorest class of people take on such a burden as commuting? Being snobby towards poor people is what Republicans do. Apparently Democrat states, too. Remember the low-income folks rent apartments. You left them out of your talk about houses.

    Many working class people are forced to live in vehicles because rent is wayyyy to high. My house payment was $375/mo in 2008 when I purchased this house new. I could rent it for $1500/mo today. That’s ridiculous!

    I'm CHOOSING to be HOUSELESS... Not HOMELESS. Big difference. I'm sick of the headache of owning a home. On top of the costs. Property taxes and homeowner insurance have MORE THAN DOUBLED in the last 5 years!! It's ridiculous. Can't wait to get my van/tiny home built and get out on the road to freedom

If you do the math, you'll see that in order to afford an apartment @$1300.00 per month as well as the landlords demands on × 3 monthly income you'll see that one must make 4000 dollars per month to afford that. That's $30.00 an hour income. Do the math. Don't sit on here trying to act like a jerk.

I don't stay anywhere longer than a few days and never park anywhere I'm not allowed even if it means driving a hundred miles to find a place I am. In addition to my day job that's 100% remote, I own a business and a lot of my customers don't mind if I park in their lot overnight. It's added security for them. Also I'm 100% self contained as are most other vanlifers I know of. I've never seen a vanlifer peeing outside their vehicle. I've seen plenty of homeless people do it, all around the country. Vanlifers aren't 'homeless' they are 'houseless', there's a freaking difference. Just because you're a slave to your 30 year mortgage, don't blame us.

    I am a homeowner. No matter where you live, there are circumstances that may or may not add to your discomfort. Live by a golf course, baseball field, you may endup with broken windows. Live by a school, you wil have kids walking by, late night games, dances, etc. If you live at a big lake, you will have campers. If you live by the beach (you lucky duck), you will have beach goers. I personally wouldn't want a house on the beach for that reason. Look at Spring Break!! I do however have my van to periodically vanlife in.......

    A big problem bc the dam city refuses to set up full time unisex restrooms for residents, in secure areas, so that people can live in the vans in a healthy environment. No one wants to urinate in the road! Duh!
