  • Well, it's finally happening. I'm installing a turbo on my base Saturn Sky with the 2.4L engine. I was lucky enough to find a local guy who was selling his and was able to purchase it. He's also helping with the installation.
    This video is day 1 which includes removing the turbo and hardware from the current Solstice and adding the cold air side onto my Sky.
    Here's some items you may need:
    Wide Band Air-Fuel Ratio Gauge - amzn.to/2Pr1xjg
    Boost Gauge - amzn.to/39XHYH8
    Exhaust Manifold Gasket - amzn.to/2Pqjdvv

    That's awesome 👍 My base model Sky has a aftermarket turbo and trust me you'll have so much fun driving it ! Thank you for posting this. I love watching stuff on here so I can get ideas of what to do to mine next 😁

    Great video Mike. Looking forward to it's completion and the affect it has on your car. I've been considering doing the same to mine but I'm concerned about what harm it might cause to the engine itself. There doesn't seem to be any info anywhere about it. Are there different turbo makes or only one that is suitable for this car? Sorry for all the questions. Lance

      Lance, I have a 2007 Sky 2.4 that came with the stronger piston rods from factory. I used the K04 turbo off the 2.0 Redline/GXP cars and most of those parts are a direct bolt on to the 2.4. My engine had 70K miles on it when I did it and I more than doubled that before going with a new, fully forged engine (except the crank) so I could go even more power. Keep the power level to around 250-60 WHP and even if the tune is off a bit you'll be pretty safe. I blew a head gasket but also was running 15 psi and it took over a year to finally go.,

       Robotech04
      Thanks a lot for the note. This helps for sure. I have an 09 base with 20K on it and expect our 2.4 engines are the same with the same stronger piston rods unless there is a difference and there is a way of knowing whether I would have the stronger rods or not. Engine codes / numbers maybe? I’ve been really happy with the Sky as it came and the 2.4 is smooth and reliable but I like everyone else, crave a bit more power. I’ve never driven a Red Line but told they really pull when you step on the throttle. I’m not hard on a vehicle but it would be nice to know that I have added power when needed. I wonder if the after market turbo units a work as well as one from a Red Line model. We have a performance hot rod shop locally that I use so I’m sure they would have info on suitable units.
      Cheers,
      Lance

      @@LanceIs55 Unfortunately all 2.4 cars model year 2008 and later (built starting July 1, 2007) have the non-forged and thus weaker rods. Still, you can put a turbo on them and get tuned Redline like power. You just are limited to around 300 whp with a really good tune rather than the 400 whp of earlier engines.
      The Redline's K04 turbo runs out of breath on the 2.4 around 4,200 RPM. I made 266 with mine but that peaked at 4,200 rpm. Even on the 2.0 power drops off around the 5k rpm range.
      You can go with other aftermarket turbos that are made to fit the 2.0 cars but at that point going with an aftermarket turbo setup from RPM, Hahn or PAW would be a better choice since you are starting from scratch. I was piecing together my K04 based kit from donated parts I was getting for free so in the end my first version (about 240-250 whp) only cost me a about $1,200. Most of what I added to it later (Hahn intercooler, return style fuel system, 3" exhaust, etc) didn't help the power level of that setup much but was beneficial for where I was planning on going (which is where I am now) with a 450-500 whp build.

      @@Robotech04 That’s not great news but I’ll continue to pursue the possibility. Wow! You are really well informed about engines, turbos and how they can work together in an optimum fashion. I don’t know if this would ruin the chance of success with what I have, but last year I installed a MagnaFlow 16661 dual exhaust on the car but it has a 2.5 inch pipe not 3. I think Mike Martin installed a dual exhaust on his base Sky but it was from a Red Line which I believe uses 3 inch piping. I will keep your notes on file and also pass them along to my mechanic who has done much of the work and upgrades on my cars. If there is any real chance of reducing the longevity of the engine by adding a turbo charger, I may pass on it and go a different route. Once again, thank for taking the time to provide me with this information and explaining things so well.
      Lance

      @@LanceIs55 No problem, glad to help out.
      The MagnaFlow 2.5" exhausts for the Sky, both single and dual outlet, were fabricated by MagnaFlow on my first Sky. The Redline and Base model car both use 2.5" exhausts from the factory so your exhaust will be fine even if you add a turbo. MagnaFlow does make a 3" exhaust for our cars but it is not beneficial until you reach the 400 whp mark. (which is what I have on my car now, but see below)
      Going with a 260whp turbo build on the 2.4 should not harm longevity or reliability. Keep the boost level at 12psi or lower and you'll be fine.
      For some background, I have had 2 2007 early build 2.4 Skys and my current one has a Gen III 2.4 block with aftermarket forged rods and forged pistons with an 8.8:1 compression ratio, ARP head studs, a port and polished 2.4 head with larger valves and heavier valve springs running the Performance Auto Werks WR-4 turbo (meant for the 2.0 LNF engine) and set up to run flex fuel to make between 450 - 500 whp (550 - 600 crank hp).

      It may be the water pump leaking. It's a common problem and one that I have myself. I'll be changing mine during the turbo mod.

  • @Robotech04
    @Robotech04 4 года назад

    $10 the raised air temps are due to the removed ducting. If you can, get ducting back in there and the coolant will stabilize more and your intercooler will work more efficiently.

    • @MikesHouseOfMods
      @MikesHouseOfMods  4 года назад +1

      Yeah. That's what I'm thinking as well. I just have to figure out how to run the air back up to the radiator with the intercooler in the way. The intercooler isn't like the Redline with the pipes coming out the back. They come out the sides then go out, around, and up to the downpipes.

    • @Robotech04
      @Robotech04 4 года назад

      @@MikesHouseOfMods actually the stock ducting has that figured out already. Have you noticed how there is that rubber lip that hangs WAAAAY down underneath the car right at the radiator but behind the spot for the factory intercooler...give you one guess what that's for. LOL You just need the front ducting there to keep the air moving in that area as the designers intended. This is why I went with OEM Redline intercooler parts on my build. Now I can use any aftermarket intercooler for a Redline and it bolts right in around the factory duct work with the intended modifications for clearance.

      My Sky is an early 07 build which already has forged internals and can handle well over 300 HP. Plus, I plan on only pushing around 8-10 psi to keep everything safe.

    • @Robotech04
      @Robotech04 4 года назад

      @@MikesHouseOfMods the early build 2007 only has forged rods from factory. Pistons are still cast. But yea, those engines have been pushed to 380 whp on stock internals.
