This, for me, is by far the most exciting filmmaking tool to come out in a long time. It's a compact C300 Mark III with an internal data rate that outperforms the S1H. 1.46x Super 35 DGO Sensor, Cinema 4K, CLog 3, Internal ND. Only needs two SD cards, mini-XLR to XLR cable, two extra batteries! No need for a cage. As someone who's used quite a few of the Canon Cinema lineup to date, this is a tremendous feat! Bravo to Canon!

@@roteskaeppchen That's a fair point. In my experience with Canon Cinema Cameras, I've used the LCD monitors far more than the EVFs, and I have found them to be very usable despite their small sizes! So the lack of an EVF is not a dealbreaker for everyone. But perhaps they could have added a slot to add an EVF (like on the C500 Mark II/C300 Mark III--that would have been nice!)

I’ve always loved the usability, form factor&layout of the C100, the side handle, joystick/record/iris/white balance/ISO/magnify all accessible via your thumb/index finger; the C70 seems to improve on everything, especially 422 10bit, false color & dynamic range. Missing is Raw, but Canon will save that for a more expensive camera, not even via HDMI/USBC with ProResRaw, but can’t have everything, maybe the Sony FX6 will offer everything?
The C70 appears to be a perfect event camera & livestreaming camera, and great documentary camera and a decent indie film (no Raw) camera. Great for music videos too!

This type of practice is why I wont buy Canon for video ever again. They constantly release products with major quirks and missing features only to release the features for the next gen. This way your camera is anyways obsolete or inferior in some way and you jump at the opportunity to upgrade your camera to relieve yourself of the headache. Your camera either overheats, can't shoot raw, cant shoot good 120fps video, major cropping, cant use ssd storage, or whatever. Can't have it all for a reasonable price like the bmpcc.

For those who may wonder, the size of a super 35mm digital image sensor is around 60% smaller than the size of full frame digital image sensor. The size of full frame digital sensor is the same of the classic 35mm film.
The size of super 35mm digital image sensors isn't specific with each manufacturer but is very close to the size of APS-C digital image sensors. Super 35mm sensors and APS-C sensors have different image ratio though.
With the smaller super 35mm digital image sensors the use of multiple internal optical ND filter is easier than with full frame cameras. The internal optical ND filters (not electronic ND filters) are vital for videographers and is one of the main privileges of really professional video cameras.
Somehow the super 35 digital video cameras have similar depth of field and high ISO performance of APS-C video cameras. The image ratio is different.
Surface area of digital image sensors.

I don't know why people keep saying fullframe is the size of cinema cameras. For stills, yes. Frames moved sideways. But for motion pictures the film moved downwards making the frame size smaller aka Super35mm.
Very few movies were shot in fullframe.

    • @AgnostosGnostos
      @AgnostosGnostos 4 года назад

Gabriel Alves Full frame sensors permit shallower depth of depth with lenses of similar angle of view and aperture and better high ISO performance than super 35mm sensor. That is very important for some videographers. Also full frame lenses are much cheaper than similar Cine lenses designed for smaller sensors.
In the other hand full frame lenses usually suffer from focus breathing and from the rolling shutter phenomenon.
It is difficult for Cinema cameras to have internal ND filters with full frame sensor.
In general there are many reasons why professionals prefer Digital Cinema cameras and Cine lenses with super 35mm sensors.
The truth is that with the recent impressive Sony a7S III, and Canon R5 there is less need for Cinema cameras.
With less money even amateurs like me can have professional video quality.
We live in a transitional period. The difference between Cinema camera and mirrorless cameras isn't so clear.

So close. Love the built-in ND and loads of special purpose and custom buttons. Do we know the situation with HDMI output quality? For example, if we record to an Atomos with ProResRaw, is that going to be better quality than any internal option? Not thrilled with the codecs.

Is there a word on Mid level model RF-Mount Video centric camera?
Or did Canon confirm enabling RAW Capabilities Externally? (I Don't think they can do that Internally with choice of both SD Card slots).
I Moved to RF- Lenses recently and have a Pre Order on R5. Was on Fence to decide between Canon C70- Red Komodo (I Can not move to Sony a7s3- No more selling lens and loosing money).
Is still feel couple of things missing...
    1. DPAF Version2 which is available in R5.
    2. RAW Options- Canon Cinema RAW Light (Internally with a CF-Express Card), or Externally with Atomos Ninja V (Sony is giving a 16 bit RAW Output that gets converted to 12 bit Prores Raw).
    3. ALL-I Frame rates (It seems ALL-I is capped at 30fps currently).
Comparing to Sony A7S3 ($3499), i get that the additional $2000 premium for C70 ($5499 price tag) makes sense for ND Filters/Color Science/Active Cooling/Handling-Menu/Audio inputs etc... However, Where are the RAW capabilities that Sony A7S3 (Or lower price tag BMPC 6K, Panasonic S1H) providing.
I still consider this as an inferior product compared to competition. Its like we give you all the tools that you want but you can only record upto 4.2.2 10 Bit where All-I capped at 30P.
I don't have any other choice but just to wait till Canon releases another RF- Mount Video centric camera that offers RAW capabilities.
I hope Canon release a mid level model with below add-on features.
    1. DPAF Latest Version.
    2. One/Two SD Card slots with an Additional CF-Express card slot (For Internal Raw recording).
    3. Do not limit ALL-I to 30P.
    4. RAW Output to Atomos Ninja V.

If this had internal RAW it would be the same as the C300 MKIII. So that means the much more expensive media and larger body, which would increase cost. I think for the market its aimed at RAW isn't really needed and XF-AVC ALL-I is absolutely fine! Jake

Canon seems kind of mixed up.
All of its prime cinema lenses are full frame, but it mostly has Super 35 cameras. Its newest lenses, the Sumire, are PL only, but it costs a lot extra for a PL mount, and they don't have an adapter for their newest camera, the C70, which is using an entirely new mount, the RF. In addition, all of its zoom lenses are Super 35, but if you install the .71x adapter on the C70, these lenses won't work right. How many years will it be for them to get all of this straightened out? They could start by offering the Sumires with an EF mount.

Awesomely detailed review! I'm a hybrid shooter using an EOS R with a set of native EF & RF lenses, and here is my dilemma: should I get an R5 or a C70 to complement my R? I'm currently pretty satisfied with the EOS R on the stills side (for sure, I wouldn't say no to better ergonomics, more resolution, enhanced AF and IBIS, but realistically I don't really need this for my shooting style), but I definitely need to upgrade the video side of things (overcome the 8bit codec, the cropped 4k, and the lack of 120p slow-motion with AF). So now that you've reviewed the C70, how does it compare to the R5 in terms of image quality, dynamic range, autofocus and stabilization? Which one would you recommend that I pick in addition to my R? Thanks in advance for your answer!

    • @CVPTV

Do you need it to take stills or just for video? AF & Stabilisation is better on R5. However the C70 is a more stable pro video camera. If you need a hybird the R5 is great but does have it's limits. If you just need it for video, go C70. Thanks for wacthing! Jake

@@CVPTV Thanks for the answer. As I said, I’ll keep my R for stills, but I’m going back and forth between R5 and C70 as a video oriented complement to my R. Based on your feedback, I’m definitely leaning towards the C70. One last question though: how does the AF performs exactly in 120fps? I understand that there’s no more face tracking, but can you still tap on whatever subject/object and have the camera track it? Or is it simply limited to continuous AF within a central zone of the frame? On the other hand, the R5 has full AF face tracking up to 120fps, right? Would you consider the C70 AF in 120fps usable? Is it a deal breaker vs R5? Thanks in advance!

Looks like a great camera and to my eye a more pleasing image than the Sony FX-6. Also the touchscreen CAF scores over that camera. I think for corporate work the Sony will be perceived in the industry as the go-to standard, especially as this one doesn't quite look like a "pro" camera. I presume it does not output RAW, as it does not have an SDI port. The biggest downer for me is the small screen and no EVF, which make this a young person's camera! Thankfully it has excellent focus aids, but for framing I always do better with an EVF or minimum 5" screen.
