I agree with everything you said. I retired at 54. Not as young as you, but still young. I sold my big house and about 2/3 of my possessions, and moved to FL. l lease a very small condo and drive a 12 year old car. I've never been happier. I never set an alarm. I spend my days reading, swimming in the community pool and going to the beach. I too took a bunch of trips the first couple of years but have kind of gotten that out of my system and now am taking one or two trips a year. I live in a place people save up all year to vacation. I'm about to turn 61 and I have no regrets. That feeling of freedom you mentioned is just so awesome. I feel so blessed and sometimes have to pinch myself because I can't believe I'm living such a great life.
@@timmychanofficial I worked as a social worker in 4 different government jobs over a period of 31 years. I got a decent pension. I bought my first home at 19 and always owned until I retired. I made a lot of money rolling houses over. My kids are grown now and I don't see the point of having 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. I like leasing because I can move whenever I want and I no longer have to do repairs. Just an air conditioner would cost me 6k at least.

I completely get what you're saying. I traveled on the NYC subway to work for 21 years from Queens into Manhattan, and the last 7 from Long Island into Manhattan. The latter commute was 2 hours each way. What a waste of my life.
@NurturingTalents to me, retiring early does not mean sitting around doing nothing. Even if I don't have a job, I plan on being physically active. So , for people who stay active into their retirement, I think retiring early actually prolongs life.

Retirement can also suck the life out of someone...a lot of people do poorly in retirement. Or maybe the life was already sucked out of them and their regular job was the only thing keeping their heart and legs moving. God that's depressing.
I would save more tho. If you have the energy and health. Save as much as possible. You never know what might happen to the economy. And remember that money is a fiat currency. Unless you have 90% in commodities and bonds you are vulnerable. Nice accomplishment nonetheless!

I am an elder law paralegal. Unfortunately most people never get their retirement dream. One or the other gets sick and retirement is spent sick or as a caregiver. That is why my husband and I planned way ahead and I am now retired to spend time with my grandkids and play with my pups. My husband has his own business and now works mainly to add to our savings and takes off whenever he wants to rest or work on a home project which is what he finds fun. I supervise lol. So his advise is a good reminder to us all that our time is limited and we need to make the most of it but it requires planning and he has good advice.
Sounds awesome to see your grandkids in what seems like a big happy family. Keep on adding to savings is nice. Even better if you doing something you love anyway.

I retired in 2000 at age 45. I like having time to learn new things even if its just a home floor refinish job. RUclips is great for that. I hate being sleep deprived even by an hour. Tens to ruin my whole day. I avoid traffic on roads and the shopping. So no wasted time in traffic jams getting pissed. Or driving on wet salty roads in the winter. My car thanks me for that...lol Can't remember when I was sick. I see many sick people when shopping at Walmart with most cashiers coughing. I turn my head and hold my breath, keep hands off my face and wash when I get home... No longer being to busy earning a living to make any money. For a young person I say try to find a job you don't mind doing, are happy with, or even passionate about. Makes earning a living 10 times better than slogging thru a job you hate like doing the same thing over and over again in the middle of the night when you should be sleeping.
45 is my age limit to retire. Initially planned at 40, but I always got conned into interesting job. So I promised myself this will be my last job, and I'm gonna retire once my project is done. So looking forward to it!

Certainly havent retired, but 5 years ago my wife and I dumped all our debt by selling pretty much everything we have. Reset our lives my buying used vehicles, buying a smaller home, and getting rid of ALL our consumer debt or credit cards of any kind. Today we work 3 days per week and have a completely different lifestyle. So much more rewarding...life is more enjoyable...more fulfilling. The type of work we do does allow us to just leave within a few days of deciding to get out of town for a few day or longer if wanted. One week we just randomly decided to fly to las vegas...this was a tuesday evening...by Thursday morning we were on our way. So we do still work to earn money, but have greatly reduced our consumption. Why work yourself to death for a bunch of crap you dont need or even really want....most just hadnt stopped to realize it yet because marketing tells us otherwise.

I agree so much, the perception of how long a task will take changes when you work from home and have more energy because you are rested. Tasks like decluttering the basement used to take forever. Now I just do it when I feel like it.
I went on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. They told me that my "vacation request is unauthorized." People and co-workers are so robotic these days. I got fired for going on vacation lol, I feel so much better.

21 and not even close to retire but it gives us young people an idea on how it feels to be semi retired/retired and why some peopel seek it more than others.
In semi retirement now. I live in west San Jose, so I definitely understand about avoiding the high traffic schedule. My health had improved so much since my accounts payable job ended with the demise of the non profit agency in 2016. I currently have steady income source from military spousal benefit, plus I am also a part time eBay reseller. I do not miss the time clock, dealing with difficult people, reduction of hours off when agency is having cash flow issues. Job stress is eliminated. I am looking forward to relocate out of the Bay Area this year.
I fully admire and endorse your early retirement! Good for you! Don't listen to the negative naysayers commenting on your videos. I agree with some other comment here, now that you have been on your own for some time now, you really do come across as much more relaxed. I'm retired too, stopped working at 53, almost 60 now, and so grateful to not be stuck in 9 to 5 work the last 6.5 years, especially after being in such a negative situation I had at my last 9 to 5 job.

You make a good point about the curative powers of sleep. If I feel a virus coming on and I try to get more rest,.it usually goes away or doesn't last as long, but if I'm sleep-deprived, I usually get very sick.

So many good points in this video. At my pest control job, it was so dirty, I got sick from it somehow. I started throwing up and having diarrhea. I couldn’t even work. I hinted to my boss I wanted to quit and he came to my house and picked up my work truck and there were people waiting to replace me immediately. Internal work over vacation is an awesome point too. I would rather clean up my stuff and sell stuff instead of outwardly seeking happiness through vacation also. Never ending to do list outside of work was very relatable too. You can never do things for yourself even after you worked for someone else. It sucks bad!
I retired early ---toughest part for me was the less social interaction w/ peers since most of the time older folks are the only ones retired and socially active during the day when I'm able to do stuff....as a veteran of Afganistan and in health care, I worked 24/7/365 and felt I worked a lot longer than my peers who didn't enter the military as a career....now I'm benefiting from that work.

I work in an office, and we worked from home for a very short time between March 2020 to May 2020. Wearing these masks, I noticed I have not gotten sick. Before it would be easy for me to catch a sore throat or flu-like symptoms almost every flu season
Friend went into serious depression doing this for 5 years or so been semi retired as they were earning money from a online marketing website. Time went by faster than expected- planned getting a job after a year but the money coming in made them forget. You become in your own little bubble world and forget the real world going on. This can have serious later problems. Also, made him depressed more looking at friends facebook after 5 years (he was not checking for few years) to see all social and active fun people were having 'living' with their family and kids etc. What made it worst was looking at linkedin and seeing achievements people made in 5 years like been director at Morgan Stanley. Getting their PhD or MD or some leading role at a top venture capital company and all achievements they made. This actually caused him to see a shrink. Serious affects when you see progress others have made while you let time just run by.

I retired at 57 kind of impulsively because I was offered a huge golden handshake.. My main reason was the freeway pollution was making people sick. I’m well off and plan to die with zero.
I realize that this is the way to go for me. I've done a lot of mistakes over the last years, having gambling problems and building up a decent amount of debt because of it. My spendings apart from that have always been pretty low as I'm not craving any new technology/clothes/expensiv food/... This is my goal, to be financially free. Lately I'm feeling how much of a burden living paycheck to paycheck actually is, beeing at bank on payday waiting with hundreds of other people that struggle. I still want to keep working but I want to be able to actually choose what I do and when I want to do it, just like you!

you know whats wild. all these ideas i have been living for the past 3 years yet im still kinda paycheck to paycheck or in debt at least.i have been working from home at a steady pace for a while doing small odd jobs....i moved OUT of California to avoid paying for a 4 br in SD after 12 years. honestly i dont feel too bad for my position (not that i ever did). just need to put some small amount of money into another actual money making project since I'm home all the time. i make all my money on the internet yet i make no money on the internet if that makes sense...smh
I think you made the right decision, if you waited until you get old you might be in too bad a condition to go do the things you want to go do. I am surprised that you have been able to retire/semi-retire so young,but I', glad for you, I only wish I could have done the same thing except I probably would have just gone into a retail business because I love making a sale and I like good people..
It isn't until you have enough money to pay your expenses for the rest of your life that you finally get to see how you would live your life without a job getting in the way. Once you get to this point, you're free, free to spend your time however you choose. It's so nice to be on your own time and at your own pace. You feel so much less stress because you have "enough". You actually get to explore hobbies and other types of work that bring you happiness and are more fulfilling.
It's debatable at which financial status you can actually pursue these things that you enjoy rather than just a job to make money. I think once you feel financially secure enough, that your savings is large enough to not work for many years, then I think that is the minimal point at which you can start thinking about making less on things you enjoy.
I like how btb doesn't really consider himself fully retired, because the truth is, if you are lucky enough to live well into your 80s, at some point you will need an assisted living facility or care taker, which very expensive in the US. Even with insurance you are looking at $4-$5k/month for a shared room in a nursing home. If you want your own room, it could be like $8-$10k or more. I think a lot of FIRE people who say they're "retired" don't count this in their actual estimate. So your burn rate might be $1350 while you're in your prime, but when you get old, its going sky rocket exponentially, but it sounds this guy understands that, and isn't trying to stay complacement.
I find funny this kind of videos get a lot of comments saying it's impossible or boring if you don't work. People want different things in life, I'll be happy having a quiet life doing my hobbies at home once I get to my number.
There are always some people that looks at the world in view of impossibility. They will find every conceivable way that it will not work rather than find the ways that can make it work. That might be the reason I am able to do it.
Nice insight for retirement. I like the social aspect of work. Not every job ive had was positive. I have been getting much better financially, so I can decide to leave a job that is not fulfilling socially to me. If i am having fun it doesnt feel like work is a horrible place to be, more like working together with friends.

Maybe this applies too. Asians work hard from childhood, studying, playing piano or something additional. By the time you have a full time job, you've been disciplined for 20 years (from 5 - 25). For *some* Americans, a full time job after college will be the first time they've had to be disciplined and accountable for outcomes.
Not all Asians work hard or are smart. Look at how many poor people there are in Asia and you'll quickly find out. What you see are immigrants. They have to work extra hard because they are at a disadvantage when they land in a new country
Hi I didn't really plan to eretire after 23 plus years as an OT in the schools. I got tired of dealing with the bureaucracy! Now I wisheI hadnt! Hubby still working and I feel like invisible. None asks me what I do but they didn't when I did work. Haha. Anyway at 57 I'm bored. I've tried some other jobs but didn't like them and don't think I can do retail. Any ideas? I have a BS in OT.
Nice Video, good advises for my future retirement life. But I do feel like you quit your job a little too early for the following reasons: 1. If you work for another 1 or 2 years, you may not stuck in "half retirement" and live less frugal. 2. Should retire when you can sustain the burn rate of a typical Family(wife and children).

I think some of it is also your mental health. I know some people who do not have the energy to do things even when retired. I know someone who picked up drinking habits while retired. For those people, early retirement was not a good thing for them.
BtB, you retired--quit the rat race--early enough to enjoy many years of an active lifestyle--as active as you want doing what you want. Many people retire only to die in a few years--very little enjoyment out of life. I think what you did is an example for many of us. I retired early to be my mom's caregiver when her health deteriorated. Where I worked provided a nice pension--more than my monthly burn-rate--for the rest of my life. I dont plan to retire at all. My uncle is worth about $100 million and he's 78yrs old and still goes to work 9-5 and full of meetings. His life is more meaningful than some retirees life for sure.
When I feel myself getting sick i workout out, Idk I think I like the grind and the push. Just for my own business though forreal not trying break my back for someone else's business

Owning a home in full is ideal to retiring but not absolutely necessary. If you don't, your burn rate can be significantly higher due to rent and it can increase with the market.

I think it's hard to be passionate about most corporate jobs. I would put it at 80%+ of people are not being engaged.
45 is my age limit to retire. Initially planned at 40, but I always got conned into interesting job. So I promised myself this will be my last job, and I'm gonna retire once my project is done. So looking forward to it!

Certainly havent retired, but 5 years ago my wife and I dumped all our debt by selling pretty much everything we have. Reset our lives my buying used vehicles, buying a smaller home, and getting rid of ALL our consumer debt or credit cards of any kind. Today we work 3 days per week and have a completely different lifestyle. So much more rewarding...life is more enjoyable...more fulfilling. The type of work we do does allow us to just leave within a few days of deciding to get out of town for a few day or longer if wanted. One week we just randomly decided to fly to las vegas...this was a tuesday evening...by Thursday morning we were on our way. So we do still work to earn money, but have greatly reduced our consumption. Why work yourself to death for a bunch of crap you dont need or even really want....most just hadnt stopped to realize it yet because marketing tells us otherwise.
Thank you so much for sharing about the to-do list. I am so in that place where my to-do list goes on and on and hardly ever gets accomplished. Now I know not to be so hard on myself due to being mentally spent. Thank you!
I agree so much, the perception of how long a task will take changes when you work from home and have more energy because you are rested. Tasks like decluttering the basement used to take forever. Now I just do it when I feel like it.
Completely agree. I retired from my Engineering job 19 months ago, well before my FRA, its the best thing I've ever done. Freedom!
It doesn't seem like those who actually retire early have much negative things to say. There are negatives but is much less than all the positives.

I went on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. They told me that my "vacation request is unauthorized." People and co-workers are so robotic these days. I got fired for going on vacation lol, I feel so much better.

21 and not even close to retire but it gives us young people an idea on how it feels to be semi retired/retired and why some peopel seek it more than others.
In semi retirement now. I live in west San Jose, so I definitely understand about avoiding the high traffic schedule. My health had improved so much since my accounts payable job ended with the demise of the non profit agency in 2016. I currently have steady income source from military spousal benefit, plus I am also a part time eBay reseller. I do not miss the time clock, dealing with difficult people, reduction of hours off when agency is having cash flow issues. Job stress is eliminated. I am looking forward to relocate out of the Bay Area this year.
I fully admire and endorse your early retirement! Good for you! Don't listen to the negative naysayers commenting on your videos. I agree with some other comment here, now that you have been on your own for some time now, you really do come across as much more relaxed. I'm retired too, stopped working at 53, almost 60 now, and so grateful to not be stuck in 9 to 5 work the last 6.5 years, especially after being in such a negative situation I had at my last 9 to 5 job.

You make a good point about the curative powers of sleep. If I feel a virus coming on and I try to get more rest,.it usually goes away or doesn't last as long, but if I'm sleep-deprived, I usually get very sick.

So many good points in this video. At my pest control job, it was so dirty, I got sick from it somehow. I started throwing up and having diarrhea. I couldn’t even work. I hinted to my boss I wanted to quit and he came to my house and picked up my work truck and there were people waiting to replace me immediately.
Internal work over vacation is an awesome point too. I would rather clean up my stuff and sell stuff instead of outwardly seeking happiness through vacation also.
Never ending to do list outside of work was very relatable too. You can never do things for yourself even after you worked for someone else. It sucks bad!

I retired early ---toughest part for me was the less social interaction w/ peers since most of the time older folks are the only ones retired and socially active during the day when I'm able to do stuff....as a veteran of Afganistan and in health care, I worked 24/7/365 and felt I worked a lot longer than my peers who didn't enter the military as a career....now I'm benefiting from that work.
That sounds rough. How is it 24/7? You can be sleeping and get called on?
@@BeatTheBush yes, military you're on call, work 7 days a week, often 12-14 hr days.....so like you mentioned, it felt like I was working overtime/extra compared to peers
I hope you get compensated for wait time? Maybe not at 100% rate but I think a fraction of that is reasonable.

I work in an office, and we worked from home for a very short time between March 2020 to May 2020. Wearing these masks, I noticed I have not gotten sick. Before it would be easy for me to catch a sore throat or flu-like symptoms almost every flu season
Same here. I get sick a least once or twice a year when going into the office. Now, no flu for the past 2 years.
Friend went into serious depression doing this for 5 years or so been semi retired as they were earning money from a online marketing website. Time went by faster than expected- planned getting a job after a year but the money coming in made them forget. You become in your own little bubble world and forget the real world going on. This can have serious later problems. Also, made him depressed more looking at friends facebook after 5 years (he was not checking for few years) to see all social and active fun people were having 'living' with their family and kids etc. What made it worst was looking at linkedin and seeing achievements people made in 5 years like been director at Morgan Stanley. Getting their PhD or MD or some leading role at a top venture capital company and all achievements they made. This actually caused him to see a shrink. Serious affects when you see progress others have made while you let time just run by.
Man this is so true! I work from home myself as a Digital Marketer and I often forget what day it is or taking afternoon naps 😴 Congratulations on your "Retirement!"

I retired at 57 kind of impulsively because I was offered a huge golden handshake.. My main reason was the freeway pollution was making people sick. I’m well off and plan to die with zero.
I realize that this is the way to go for me. I've done a lot of mistakes over the last years, having gambling problems and building up a decent amount of debt because of it.
My spendings apart from that have always been pretty low as I'm not craving any new technology/clothes/expensiv food/...
This is my goal, to be financially free.
Lately I'm feeling how much of a burden living paycheck to paycheck actually is, beeing at bank on payday waiting with hundreds of other people that struggle.
I still want to keep working but I want to be able to actually choose what I do and when I want to do it, just like you!
If you got rid of your gambling problem then knocking off the debt is next. You sound like you already know what to do.

you know whats wild. all these ideas i have been living for the past 3 years yet im still kinda paycheck to paycheck or in debt at least.i have been working from home at a steady pace for a while doing small odd jobs....i moved OUT of California to avoid paying for a 4 br in SD after 12 years. honestly i dont feel too bad for my position (not that i ever did). just need to put some small amount of money into another actual money making project since I'm home all the time.
i make all my money on the internet yet i make no money on the internet if that makes sense...smh

I think you made the right decision, if you waited until you get old you might be in too bad a condition to go do the things you want to go do. I am surprised that you have been able to retire/semi-retire so young,but I', glad for you, I only wish I could have done the same thing except I probably would have just gone into a retail business because I love making a sale and I like good people..
It is indeed fun to make a sale if that is what you enjoy. Everybody's idea of a fun and interesting life is different. =D
It isn't until you have enough money to pay your expenses for the rest of your life that you finally get to see how you would live your life without a job getting in the way. Once you get to this point, you're free, free to spend your time however you choose. It's so nice to be on your own time and at your own pace. You feel so much less stress because you have "enough". You actually get to explore hobbies and other types of work that bring you happiness and are more fulfilling.
It's debatable at which financial status you can actually pursue these things that you enjoy rather than just a job to make money. I think once you feel financially secure enough, that your savings is large enough to not work for many years, then I think that is the minimal point at which you can start thinking about making less on things you enjoy.
I have a day off today and do all the activity that i like. Seems the day is so longgggg......

I like how btb doesn't really consider himself fully retired, because the truth is, if you are lucky enough to live well into your 80s, at some point you will need an assisted living facility or care taker, which very expensive in the US. Even with insurance you are looking at $4-$5k/month for a shared room in a nursing home. If you want your own room, it could be like $8-$10k or more. I think a lot of FIRE people who say they're "retired" don't count this in their actual estimate. So your burn rate might be $1350 while you're in your prime, but when you get old, its going sky rocket exponentially, but it sounds this guy understands that, and isn't trying to stay complacement.
I really think if you got a cat your life would be much more fullfilling with a greater purpose.
I find funny this kind of videos get a lot of comments saying it's impossible or boring if you don't work. People want different things in life, I'll be happy having a quiet life doing my hobbies at home once I get to my number.
There are always some people that looks at the world in view of impossibility. They will find every conceivable way that it will not work rather than find the ways that can make it work. That might be the reason I am able to do it.

Nice insight for retirement. I like the social aspect of work. Not every job ive had was positive. I have been getting much better financially, so I can decide to leave a job that is not fulfilling socially to me. If i am having fun it doesnt feel like work is a horrible place to be, more like working together with friends.

Maybe this applies too. Asians work hard from childhood, studying, playing piano or something additional. By the time you have a full time job, you've been disciplined for 20 years (from 5 - 25). For *some* Americans, a full time job after college will be the first time they've had to be disciplined and accountable for outcomes.
Probably being good in math and sciences helped in getting a high paying job.
But the downside is they’re often nerdy and robotic.
Not all Asians work hard or are smart. Look at how many poor people there are in Asia and you'll quickly find out. What you see are immigrants. They have to work extra hard because they are at a disadvantage when they land in a new country

Hi I didn't really plan to eretire after 23 plus years as an OT in the schools. I got tired of dealing with the bureaucracy! Now I wisheI hadnt! Hubby still working and I feel like invisible. None asks me what I do but they didn't when I did work. Haha. Anyway at 57 I'm bored. I've tried some other jobs but didn't like them and don't think I can do retail. Any ideas? I have a BS in OT.
Nice Video, good advises for my future retirement life. But I do feel like you quit your job a little too early for the following reasons:
1. If you work for another 1 or 2 years, you may not stuck in "half retirement" and live less frugal.
2. Should retire when you can sustain the burn rate of a typical Family(wife and children).

I think some of it is also your mental health. I know some people who do not have the energy to do things even when retired. I know someone who picked up drinking habits while retired. For those people, early retirement was not a good thing for them.
BtB, you retired--quit the rat race--early enough to enjoy many years of an active lifestyle--as active as you want doing what you want. Many people retire only to die in a few years--very little enjoyment out of life. I think what you did is an example for many of us. I retired early to be my mom's caregiver when her health deteriorated. Where I worked provided a nice pension--more than my monthly burn-rate--for the rest of my life. I think it's more about changing they way you make money and moving on to a new phase of life.

I dont plan to retire at all. My uncle is worth about $100 million and he's 78yrs old and still goes to work 9-5 and full of meetings. His life is more meaningful than some retirees life for sure.
When I feel myself getting sick i workout out, Idk I think I like the grind and the push. Just for my own business though forreal not trying break my back for someone else's business

I retired early, make sure you and your sig other have the same ideas about retirement. I love travel and want to live abroad, she doesn't. Owning a home in full is ideal to retiring but not absolutely necessary. If you don't, your burn rate can be significantly higher due to rent and it can increase with the market.
