What most people never realize is that most "good things" come to an end and spend like crazy because another paycheck is coming next week. One example is the prosperity of Detroit that no one thought would end. Look at it now. Save your money because it "buys" choice in good times and bad. I drive a 25 year old car because I chose to, not because I have to. I live in an old house, fully paid for 20 years ago with a property tax of $600/year. Seek peace of mind.
I have an 85 Toyota Corolla hatchback, whenever I decide to sell it I'm gonna make some really good money, (20 to 30 years later) invest in a car you know will return your money plus more, even if it is old.
Not sure if I agree with that. Unfortunately, not everyone is in the position to earn their own money. My family, for example, extends further than just my parents. I have a grandma, uncles, aunts, cousins, a sibling, all of whom I am happy to give money to in time of need.
My wife and I had a huge shift in lifestyle 5 years ago. You are making me rethink things we are still doing. We sold our nicer home, and bought an older and smaller home. We are in home renovation work, so were able to remodel the house over the past several years...with cash. We got rid of ALL credit cards. Dont even own one today. Sold the new cars....today we own a 2003 accord that looks and runs great, and also a 2013 tundra for the business. We cut cable and movie channels. Only thing we kept was internet service. Sold our large screen tvs....got rid of dvrs...etc. Electronics aren’t necessary like we have been led to believe, and they are a complete waste of income resources. We simplified our wardrobes. Lots of changes....but Im learning from your experience and can appreciate the direction you are going
Some might even think this is like becoming a monk. I think of it as a shortcut and not doing unnecessary things that keeps you from what matters to you most. This is rather than what marketing wants you to matter to you.
Tbh i dont think you need to make 4k videos. The information is just the same. After 1080p60 anything else doesn't really make a justifiable difference for your type of videos.
cost/use is so important, friends laughing at me why I have 300$ headphones and I'm like: been using them for 4-5 hours daily in the last 3 months, although I don't have a TV in my house just because I watch movies/tv series on my pc monitor, I like to think I'm pretty financially responsible, as long as I can buy expensive things that I care about and my net worth is increasing, I'm happy.
I think you still have to prove the $300 headphones is worth it by using it for 5 years because a $30 pair of headphone will last 3 months as well. Or even 1 year. It's hard to say. But then the enjoyment you get from superior sound means you are willing to pay a premium for cost-per-use.

For instance I had $50 speakers and now I have $500 speakers but the enjoyment of sound and the way music is listened to is completely different. Honestly I wish I didn't have to pay so much for music equipment but the experience and enjoyement is different when comparing a 20 dollar stereo to a $800 stereo. .... I will say I have gotten lucky at goodwill and found some vintage equipment that works but it's hit or miss on how long it works for....
Sennheiser HD8 DJ got them on release date for $429.99 CAD, 4 1/2 yrs later, still amazing. If I broke them today I would buy the exact same pair that's how much I love them. My excuse for spending "extra" is I'd rather spend more and get something that not only is a superior product in terms of performance/quality but also longevity.
All kinds of studies have been done that prove that after the basics, food, clothing and shelter, more $ doesn't do anything for your happiness. A really good movie to watch is "Happiness" on Amazon. They can measure the feel good chemicals in the brain and determine who is the happiest. It's NOT who you would think. So glad I found your channel. I always learn something and it also validates things I already knew.
Deprivation and delayed gratification is #1 rule in finance hold on to what u have. Temptation sets in when u see your account accumulate saving is hard because money was meant to spend but not spending your money overtime will build even a nickle at a time
It's true. By being content and simple on your needs sometimes you can find who are your friends are. I still use I Phone 5. I am not planning to change it soon. If it's not usable anymore then I will do.
BTB, I am super frugal like you, but I'm not even sure if the iPhone 5 even gets updates anymore. At the very least, you can buy a used iPhone SE or iPhone 6 for around $100. Used electronics are usually pretty good value. In general, electronics depreciate so fast that getting something 2 - 4 years old is a good buy in my opinion.

I've started to convince myself that I don't really need to buy anything except for groceries and paying rent/utility expenses. I work 12-14 hours a day and am also provided breakfast and lunch so expenses are extremely low. I feel like most of my money is useless... I could buy cool stuff but I wouldn't have any time to use it anyway. I could save/invest until the day I die but what's the fun in saving something you'll never use?
Use a little bit of it. Take 10% of what you save every month and spend it in the thing you like most. You need to work less if you don't need the money. Use that time for more important things.

Beat the Bus, Great job! For brand new movies, I go a $5 nice, clean, modern theater in Orange County, Ca, I saw Captain Marvel the first day it came out. I, also, for the last 10 years been frugal. I only buy what I REALLY need.
I am nineteen at the moment, and I wholeheartedly believe that my generation is going to one of the best when it comes to saving. Personally, I save a lot, and am investing. It is hard to justify the price of commodities in today's economy, along with the price of housing. It is even harder to justify credit cards with their extremely high interest. I realized that it is much better to save and live modestly, thanking myself down the road. Of course, this can indirectly hurt the economy...
Basically, don't buy anything just to show it off or things that don't give you significant additional value. Follow that will save you tons of money and only buy things that will last and provides value
The way I see it, is that the money I have earned is a representation of the time I have spent earning it. So the money i saved holds great value to me in the way that time holds great value to me. So whenever I buy something I convert it back in to time and determine that way, if it is worth the price. For example a product of around 60 euro's (70dollars) would be about around 7 hours of work (minimumwage (nl) example (not my actual wage)). Then I ask myself if I would be willing to work that amount of time for said product. I think minimum wage is great way to determin "worth" of something according to society.
I take the bus to work at times, fast for work and eat at home and live frugally, utilize credit cards for purchases I need to make and get points in exchange for free travel. This is the way lol

I dont want to tell people how to live but I feel we would be a lot happier if we spent more time complimenting others vs critisizing and questioning their ways. If someome wants to save money and eat one cookie a day- then awesome! That has no affect on me. I've been doing a challenge with myself to give 3 compliments by noon. We both share a smile that way and my day becomes a little bit better. :)
I had the iphone 4 until last year's black Friday, I upgraded to the Iphone SE. Works great. I drive a 2003 car and love it. I do struggle with makeup and spending in that area, but I'm working on it.

But i noticed they only ask questions to make me 2nd guess myself so that they could convince me to be more like them. Or they try to justify their own behavior by pointing out my flaws and contradictions. I once visited a friend who showed me a tour of their home and how many thousands he had spent on his furniture and all i was thinking was but hes got nothing that i dont have except mine cost very little as its all second hand or donated what an absolute waste of his money and the funny thing was he was so proud of it

We have a friend who used to walk around in old pair of sneakers, he didn't buy a new pair until he had to go to the doc for foot pain. He had the money but he did not want to spend it. As long as you are not compromising health, go right ahead and save. We have to replace our old HVAC system this Fall, I don't want to spend money but freezing in the Winter isn't a good alternative either. Any thoughts on saving HVAC systems?
Saving is great because it leads to a peaceful, sustainable lifestyle. Crushing debt and living hand to mouth are just going to get you stressed out. Don't be owned by your possessions.
I only buy what I absolutely need, and I never care what others have to say to me. Good thing is that nobody has ever said anything on my shopping choices and life style. Again our goal is to become rich, not to look rich.
My aunt has lived this same lifestyle for as long as I can remember. It’s funny because I used to say how can you live without this or that. I never really understood her reasoning. But now that I’m on my debt free journey I can understand her and of course where you are coming from.
Don't forget, that there are so many things out there that we can enjoy and not pay full price for. Buying second hand has lost its stigma and we are doing a good deed by reusing these items.

A better question would be " Why Do You Invest So Much?" 😉 there's nothing wrong with saving your money though at least then you don't have to worry about an emergency day by taking out loans or anything like most people.
You have to take a step back and ask yourself why you are buying certain things and how it affects your life long term. 'Enjoying life' might not be indulging in all the things you currently think is how you enjoy life.
Everyone needs to develop their own answer to "why", which will keep them motivated while they're pursuing their own financial or life goals, but for many on the FIER path (or have already achieved FIRE), myself included, our "why" is to achieve financial freedom. I don't want to wait until I'm 65 to start living life on my terms (unfortunately, many people don't have any plans for retirement and will likely be working well beyond 65). Yes, you can be gone tomorrow, but the chances of that happening are very low. The average life expectancy for a person living in the U.S. is 78.7 years. Statistically speaking, you are more likely to suffer from a disability than to die prematurely (which is all the more reason why you should be having a high savings rate). You can be frugal, saving money, AND enjoying life. They are not mutually exclusive.
I totally get what you're saying! People always think I don't spend on anything or do anything fun ever lol, but the truth is I'm just super deliberate with my money and I actually feel quite more indulgent than other people. The goal of my money is freedom and time to pursue things I really want to do!

Some industries and products are engineered to get people addicted to certain things they keep using and buying for no true reason. One big example is tobacco and sugary soft drinks. I don't smoke. I quit consuming soda more than 10 years ago. But I still like to have coffee everyday. Buying coffee beans cost me about $180/yr. Starbucks coffee (tall size) every day would cost $700/yr
In this day and age living a frugal lifestyle is a wise choice to make. And not everyone is a compulsive consumer who wants an over abundance of material possessions. I have found that the older I get the less material possessions mean to me. The late great comedian George Carlin does several skits pertaining to America's love affair with the mall and buying stupid stuff.
I recently sold my iPhone x and bought an Android Galaxy Note5 (this phone is a few years old) for under $100. I also switched my service provider from Verizon to MintMobile. So, I went from paying a total of $140/mo (including phone payment and Verizon service) to just $15/mo. It feels so good to optimize expenses.
I just lost My Ray-Ban glasses at the beach 😂, so when You mentioned about the glasses it reminded Me about how much it hurt to lose them 😂 . I usually don't like to spend that much on glasses either, I had gotten a good deal on them on Black Friday.

You should get an AMC A list stubs membership. $21.95 a month, but you get 3 movies a week (12 a month). Well worth it. Sneak some food and a bottle of water in your jacket. Good times for less than $2 per movie.

Almost everything I own is second hand or bought used. I choose to spend my money on high quality food for my health. I'm surviving on less than $20k/year in Hawaii and I still am able to save and contribute to my Roth IRA. You are absolutely right when you said it simply takes a shift in financial thinking, which is easier aid than done for a lot of people apparently.

Going to the movies seems so antiquated to me now. True, I don’t have family or friends to go with anymore. But, I actually have a lot more pleasure in being able to watch movies with my 2 cats, who will actually watch just about anything, in quietude, without me telling someone to be quiet. I’m not spending on popcorn, pooped in some weird tasting oil. If I want to spend, I can order in from any restaurant. I also have a rather small TV in the bedroom, until I re-hookup my old 30” Apple Cinema Display and I have 2 of those, which is good enough for me. But, the peace, quiet and not having to go to a theatre, just to tell someone what you saw, when you’re at work on Monday? I don’t think anyone does that anymore.
I love local seasonal vegetable, not afraid to buy ugly produce or mark down for quick sale vegetable. Hell I am so healthy physically and light from within.

Yup. Rule of thumb is you need to be sitting less than 1.5x the diagonal of the screen to start to see the difference. Optimal is about 1x the size of the screen. For normal viewing distance of 6-8', I means you should get 75" or larger if you want to see 4k quality.

About spending on enormous TVs: there's one highrise apartment building in my neighborhood and the people on the higher floors often forget to draw their curtains. On a recent walk around it, I noticed that some of the TVs people on the higher floors have are so big that from the street, I can watch TV with them through their windows. When your TV is so huge that people 20 floors down and a hundred meters away can watch it with you, it's Too. Darn. Big!!
You are not that far behind actually. Perhaps 3rd. You would've gotten it. Perfect caps, order, and even steak! It seems more so than ever a large TV shouldn't be a common item to have. I haven't turned mine on for months!
At the end of the day you just have to live the lifestyle that you want and do what makes you happy. And if that's lavish then that's on them. Our time is limited and we should live it to the fullest. Just make sure it's sustainable. My guilty pleasures are Technology and cars which get expensive but I'm happy making those purchases and I can make them because I don't spend my money much on anything else.
If you can afford it then by all means. But most have a choice of either not buying it or spend more time to work to buy it. It all becomes very costly if you don't like your job.

GOOD TOOLS- a reasonably price quality mechanical tool I've recently found is Tekton Tools ( i have no affiliation,just like tools). They are sold online only, I believe. They have a great warranty where you send them a pic of the broken tool and they send you a new one. They are made in Taiwan which I find vastly better in quality and precision than Chinese made tools. Best deal around. A lot of Kobalt tools are made in Taiwan and better than Husky but try to make a warranty claim on a single wrench from a set. The store gets very confused.
I go to the movies only when Nolan releases a new film. Dunkirk, Interstellar, Batman. Most things in life are infastructure. Upfrot costs. A filled closet, a home, a marriage, a car. Its all upfront costs, then you can save.

Banks always wants you to borrow money. It becomes ridiculous when you don't even want it and those mailing comes year after year.

Sold our large screen tvs....got rid of dvrs...etc. Electronics aren’t necessary like we have been led to believe, and they are a complete waste of income resources. We simplified our wardrobes. Lots of changes....but Im learning from your experience and can appreciate the direction you are going
Some might even think this is like becoming a monk. I think of it as a shortcut and not doing unnecessary things that keeps you from what matters to you most. This is rather than what marketing wants you to matter to you.
Tbh i dont think you need to make 4k videos. The information is just the same. After 1080p60 anything else doesn't really make a justifiable difference for your type of videos.

cost/use is so important, friends laughing at me why I have 300$ headphones and I'm like: been using them for 4-5 hours daily in the last 3 months, although I don't have a TV in my house just because I watch movies/tv series on my pc monitor, I like to think I'm pretty financially responsible, as long as I can buy expensive things that I care about and my net worth is increasing, I'm happy.
I think you still have to prove the $300 headphones is worth it by using it for 5 years because a $30 pair of headphone will last 3 months as well. Or even 1 year.
It's hard to say. But then the enjoyment you get from superior sound means you are willing to pay a premium for cost-per-use.
@@BeatTheBush Unfortunately hobbies sometimes don't make financial sense. For instance I had $50 speakers and now I have $500 speakers but the enjoyment of sound and the way music is listened to is completely different.
Honestly I wish I didn't have to pay so much for music equipment but the experience and enjoyement is different when comparing a 20 dollar stereo to a $800 stereo.
.... I will say I have gotten lucky at goodwill and found some vintage equipment that works but it's hit or miss on how long it works for....

Sennheiser HD8 DJ got them on release date for $429.99 CAD, 4 1/2 yrs later, still amazing. If I broke them today I would buy the exact same pair that's how much I love them. My excuse for spending "extra" is I'd rather spend more and get something that not only is a superior product in terms of performance/quality but also longevity.

All kinds of studies have been done that prove that after the basics, food, clothing and shelter, more $ doesn't do anything for your happiness. A really good movie to watch is "Happiness" on Amazon. They can measure the feel good chemicals in the brain and determine who is the happiest. It's NOT who you would think. So glad I found your channel. I always learn something and it also validates things I already knew.
Deprivation and delayed gratification is #1 rule in finance hold on to what u have. Temptation sets in when u see your account accumulate saving is hard because money was meant to spend but not spending your money overtime will build even a nickle at a time

It's true. By being content and simple on your needs sometimes you can find who are your friends are. I still use I Phone 5. I am not planning to change it soon. If it's not usable anymore then I will do.
BTB, I am super frugal like you, but I'm not even sure if the iPhone 5 even gets updates anymore. At the very least, you can buy a used iPhone SE or iPhone 6 for around $100. Used electronics are usually pretty good value. In general, electronics depreciate so fast that getting something 2 - 4 years old is a good buy in my opinion.

Btw, I like being frugal, coz it has taught me that is possible to live comfortably spending less. Thanks to the struggles I faced in the last three years made me stronger and smarter in some ways. Why people think you sacrifice too much is because a large part of society is becoming less inclined to practice MODERATION.
I've started to convince myself that I don't really need to buy anything except for groceries and paying rent/utility expenses. I work 12-14 hours a day and am also provided breakfast and lunch so expenses are extremely low. I feel like most of my money is useless... I could buy cool stuff but I wouldn't have any time to use it anyway. I could save/invest until the day I die but what's the fun in saving something you'll never use?
Use a little bit of it. Take 10% of what you save every month and spend it in the thing you like most. You need to work less if you don't need the money. Use that time for more important things.

I am nineteen at the moment, and I wholeheartedly believe that my generation is going to one of the best when it comes to saving. Personally, I save a lot, and am investing. It is hard to justify the price of commodities in today's economy, along with the price of housing. It is even harder to justify credit cards with their extremely high interest. I realized that it is much better to save and live modestly, thanking myself down the road. Of course, this can indirectly hurt the economy...

The way I see it, is that the money I have earned is a representation of the time I have spent earning it. So the money i saved holds great value to me in the way that time holds great value to me. So whenever I buy something I convert it back in to time and determine that way, if it is worth the price. For example a product of around 60 euro's (70dollars) would be about around 7 hours of work (minimumwage (nl) example (not my actual wage)). Then I ask myself if I would be willing to work that amount of time for said product. I think minimum wage is great way to determin "worth" of something according to society.

I dont want to tell people how to live but I feel we would be a lot happier if we spent more time complimenting others vs critisizing and questioning their ways. If someome wants to save money and eat one cookie a day- then awesome! That has no affect on me. I've been doing a challenge with myself to give 3 compliments by noon. We both share a smile that way and my day becomes a little bit better. :)

I had the iphone 4 until last year's black Friday, I upgraded to the Iphone SE. Works great. I drive a 2003 car and love it. I do struggle with makeup and spending in that area, but I'm working on it.

Thanks for writing this. This is exactly how i feel. I don’t drink alcohol and my friends and co-workers often ask me Why. But i noticed they only ask questions to make me 2nd guess myself so that they could convince me to be more like them. Or they try to justify their own behavior by pointing out my flaws and contradictions. At end of the day , They don’t sincerely care about our reasons or plans for the future they just want force us to follow Social Norms

We have a friend who used to walk around in old pair of sneakers, he didn't buy a new pair until he had to go to the doc for foot pain. He had the money but he did not want to spend it. As long as you are not compromising health, go right ahead and save.
We have to replace our old HVAC system this Fall, I don't want to spend money but freezing in the Winter isn't a good alternative either. Any thoughts on saving HVAC systems?

My aunt has lived this same lifestyle for as long as I can remember. It’s funny because I used to say how can you live without this or that. I never really understood her reasoning. But now that I’m on my debt free journey I can understand her and of course where you are coming from.
Don't forget, that there are so many things out there that we can enjoy and not pay full price for. Buying second hand has lost its stigma and we are doing a good deed by reusing these items.

A better question would be " Why Do You Invest So Much?" 😉 there's nothing wrong with saving your money though at least then you don't have to worry about an emergency day by taking out loans or anything like most people.
It's a problem if one is too frugal. While saving $$$, one is not living/enjoying life. Nobody can tell but we can be gone the next day.
You have to take a step back and ask yourself why you are buying certain things and how it affects your life long term. 'Enjoying life' might not be indulging in all the things you currently think is how you enjoy life.
Everyone needs to develop their own answer to "why", which will keep them motivated while they're pursuing their own financial or life goals, but for many on the FIER path (or have already achieved FIRE), myself included, our "why" is to achieve financial freedom. I don't want to wait until I'm 65 to start living life on my terms (unfortunately, many people don't have any plans for retirement and will likely be working well beyond 65). Yes, you can be gone tomorrow, but the chances of that happening are very low. The average life expectancy for a person living in the U.S. is 78.7 years. Statistically speaking, you are more likely to suffer from a disability than to die prematurely (which is all the more reason why you should be having a high savings rate). You can be frugal, saving money, AND enjoying life. They are not mutually exclusive.
I totally get what you're saying! People always think I don't spend on anything or do anything fun ever lol, but the truth is I'm just super deliberate with my money and I actually feel quite more indulgent than other people. The goal of my money is freedom and time to pursue things I really want to do!

Completely agree with your way of thinking. Time is our most precious resource. Reminds me of George Carlin speaking of American's most favorite pastime ~ buying things. The link between dietary cholesterol (cholesterol you eat) and cholesterol levels in your blood is not as strong as once thought. That's why eggs are no longer cautioned against. Maybe look into it.

I like his mentality of being monk lifestyle in a spending culture society. Some industries and products are engineered to get people addicted to certain things they keep using and buying for no true reason. One big example is tobacco and sugary soft drinks. I don't smoke. I quit consuming soda more than 10 years ago. But I still like to have coffee everyday. Buying coffee beans cost me about $180/yr. Starbucks coffee (tall size) every day would cost $700/yr
In this day and age living a frugal lifestyle is a wise choice to make. And not everyone is a compulsive consumer who wants an over abundance of material possessions. I have found that the older I get the less material possessions mean to me. The late great comedian George Carlin does several skits pertaining to America's love affair with the mall and buying stupid stuff.

I recently sold my iPhone x and bought an Android Galaxy Note5 (this phone is a few years old) for under $100. I also switched my service provider from Verizon to MintMobile. So, I went from paying a total of $140/mo (including phone payment and Verizon service) to just $15/mo. It feels so good to optimize expenses.

I just lost My Ray-Ban glasses at the beach 😂, so when You mentioned about the glasses it reminded Me about how much it hurt to lose them 😂 . I usually don't like to spend that much on glasses either, I had gotten a good deal on them on Black Friday.

You should get an AMC A list stubs membership. $21.95 a month, but you get 3 movies a week (12 a month). Well worth it. Sneak some food and a bottle of water in your jacket. Good times for less than $2 per movie.
I have come to realize that most people around me to do not have common sense when it comes to money and being financially responsible with their spending. That's why I love you and your channel! Almost everything I own is second hand or bought used. I choose to spend my money on high quality food for my health. I'm surviving on less than $20k/year in Hawaii and I still am able to save and contribute to my Roth IRA. You are absolutely right when you said it simply takes a shift in financial thinking, which is easier aid than done for a lot of people apparently.

For car repairs, totally unexpected expenses, home repairs, anything outside of normal monthly bills. Then separate savings for retirement.
Going to the movies seems so antiquated to me now. True, I don’t have family or friends to go with anymore. But, I actually have a lot more pleasure in being able to watch movies with my 2 cats, who will actually watch just about anything, in quietude, without me telling someone to be quiet. I’m not spending on popcorn, pooped in some weird tasting oil. If I want to spend, I can order in from any restaurant. I also have a rather small TV in the bedroom, until I re-hookup my old 30” Apple Cinema Display and I have 2 of those, which is good enough for me. But, the peace, quiet and not having to go to a theatre, just to tell someone what you saw, when you’re at work on Monday? I don’t think anyone does that anymore.
I love local seasonal vegetable, not afraid to buy ugly produce or mark down for quick sale vegetable. Hell I am so healthy physically and light from within.

The example with the phone was perfect, the same for people that drink soda and try and pressure you into drinking soda, and consuming sugar more often. They're the same people.

I keep hearing arguments that 4K resolution isn't worth the money because unless you are watching on a big big tv, you cannot see the difference.

Yup. Rule of thumb is you need to be sitting less than 1.5x the diagonal of the screen to start to see the difference. Optimal is about 1x the size of the screen.
For normal viewing distance of 6-8', I means you should get 75" or larger if you want to see 4k quality.

About spending on enormous TVs: there's one highrise apartment building in my neighborhood and the people on the higher floors often forget to draw their curtains. On a recent walk around it, I noticed that some of the TVs people on the higher floors have are so big that from the street, I can watch TV with them through their windows. When your TV is so huge that people 20 floors down and a hundred meters away can watch it with you, it's Too. Darn. Big!!

At the end of the day you just have to live the lifestyle that you want and do what makes you happy. And if that's lavish then that's on them. Our time is limited and we should live it to the fullest. Just make sure it's sustainable. My guilty pleasures are Technology and cars which get expensive but I'm happy making those purchases and I can make them because I don't spend my money much on anything else.
If you can afford it then by all means. But most have a choice of either not buying it or spend more time to work to buy it. It all becomes very costly if you don't like your job.

GOOD TOOLS- a reasonably price quality mechanical tool I've recently found is Tekton Tools ( i have no affiliation,just like tools). They are sold online only, I believe. They have a great warranty where you send them a pic of the broken tool and they send you a new one. They are made in Taiwan which I find vastly better in quality and precision than Chinese made tools. Best deal around. A lot of Kobalt tools are made in Taiwan and better than Husky but try to make a warranty claim on a single wrench from a set. The store gets very confused.
I go to the movies only when Nolan releases a new film. Dunkirk, Interstellar, Batman. Most things in life are infastructure. Upfrot costs. A filled closet, a home, a marriage, a car. Its all upfront costs, then you can save.
