Uncle's practicality is admirable. But the whole point of after-death rituals is actually so that the loved ones of the person who passed get emotional closure and acceptance when they come together and perform those rituals. I was in the US when both my grandmothers passed away and I was not present to bid them good bye. It was in the early 2000s before smart phones and video calls. I struggled for months to get closure whereas the family who was present there were able to get over the pain quicker. I remember going to India a few months after my maternal grandmother passed and lying down on her empty bed with her photo and sobbing my eyes out. My family could not understand why I was doing it and I could not explain to them how that grieving was necessary for my sanity.
So being able to catch a last glimpse of your loved ones and getting together with other family members while performing the final rituals helps a great deal to get some mental peace.
