This is one of the best vids I've seen on this topic, well done! My gripe (not with you, but with FS2020): ATC! I've now had a number of flights, where ATC mess the entire affair up beyond recognition. In one instance, it didn't clear me to a lower altitude so I totally blew past my TOD. "Stupidly" following orders, I ended up hopelessly high for my approach. The second time, I let the AP fly the vpath - and had to live with ATC giving the dreaded "you are below your assigned altitude" over and over and over. Today, in a third "fun" instance, I thought I'd be really smart and request a lower altitude ahead of time. Things were going great - until about 7 miles from my FAF, ATC suddenly clears me back to my original cruise altitude. I was at 2000ft with the airport in sight and ATC wanted me to climb back to FL160! 🤦♂️ Asobo have got to fix that disaster zone! Until I watched you video, I thought it was me doing something wrong! Not I know better.
Thanks. I never use the in game ATC. As you described, too unreliable. If you want a good ATC experience try VATSIM, it is very realistic and they are very accommodating to new users. Cheers!

Greetings. Great video. First time watching it and I realize it’s six months out and we’ve had an update to the NXI. I am following step-by-step but I am not getting the airway selection that you are. Have you tried this same flight plan recently with the update to NXI? With the entry YVR selected, airway V338 is not available. Only V23. That kind of throws out the beginning of the departure. I was able to manually fly and select the Janek approach but I had no MODDY choice to select. The rest of my flight was spot on especially with the arrival and approach. It was very cool. Anyways, like I said I know it’s been six months and it’s possible some of the features are not available now? Cheers and have a awesome weekend👍🏼⚓️
Hi. Thanks foe watching. I believe the airways have changed since I did this video. Sometimes when they update the Nav Data the waypoints and airways may change, everything should be fine with thee NXi, you'll just need to find an alternate route. Cheers!
Great video and very simple to understand compare to other channels that rush things and don’t get to the point on time. Please how did you map keys to change the altitude because I hate turning the dial. I mapped it before but I can’t find what to bind to
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. I don't have the altitude control mapped to keys, it is mapped to a rotary dial on my throttle quadrant and I do it through external software so I'm not sure the correct settings in MSFS.
I don't have the computer to run MSFS2020, nor do I have the money to get one, plus all the other stuff I want to set up my home sim, but I still enjoy watching others. On climb out, you 'looked' at the wing and the ground, and I immediately realized something was missing off of the wing. I must be watching too many real aviation videos, because it took me a second to realize what was 'missing' from the wing. No GoPro mounted out on the edge of the wing for videos! Some aftermarket developer is going to have to come up with 'GoPro' mounts and cameras for MSFS. That way, when you open the external views, you can view them from the camera locations! Yes, it's been a long day, no I haven't been drinking. LOL
Thanks for the comment, I did not mean anything with the ATC clearance other than to other than to start a descent. ATC was not the focus of this video. Sorry for the confusion.
Very much enjoying your videos as I am new to FS2020 a month ago. I am a retired with a commercial license and have a question about VOR airways. I have tried exactly what you had on your Rwy 8 out of YVR to Kelowna but cannot get more than one airway to show on list out of YVR. I am using version 8 of the G1000nxi. Also checking on YYC vor I only get one or two airways and not the one I want to use. Any idea why I cannot get the full listing like yourself? Calvin Cochrane Alberta
Same with me. I can't even find that airway or the MOODY waypoint in skyvector. Must be navigraph. Oh well, great video nonetheless, I was just looking to emulate the exact route, but I'll have to improvise.
Excellent explanation and video. One thing that confuses me is that you mentioned that ATC cleared you to descend and maintain 8000. When an altitude is given by ATC all other altitudes become irrelevant
Yes, That is correct for Descend Via clearance. The point of the video is to demonstrate the use of VNAV on the NXi, not the proper phraseology of ATC. There was no actual ATC clearance, I was just saying something to initiate the descent. If I was to be technically correct , Descend Via is not used In Canada so I would have been cleared to descend to 8000 Ft and expected to meet any Speed/Altitude restrictions on the STAR. Descend Via is only used in the United States. Cheers!
You mentioned that you’re using “something” (other than the mouse) to operate the “tuning/change” controls on the Garmin. Could you share what that is? I have a lot of trouble trying to zoom the map or change the Nav frequency, for example. If a controller of some kind is available, I’d certainly be interested.

If you are going to deviate from that route and go direct to the initial fix for the approach then you will need to activate the approach. Cheers!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! After reading the comments I assume my issue stems from not using navigraph (I’m on the Xbox) but when entering the first airway V338, the only options I get are PENDR and CONDI? Any way to still fly the route?
Hi, thanks for watching. I don't think you'll be able to fly the exact route unless you have Navigraph Navdata, although Microsoft does update the nav data regularly when they do a sim update.

Excellent, excellent G1000 Nxi tutorial video. Well paced, definitive step by step use of G1000 with well done time clips and coverage of each phase of a flight; the VNAV instructions were particularly good. Next step for me, see if I can fly it along side your video. The first try likely won’t be pretty. One nit, the engine sounds are unfortunately unrealistic buzzing (low frequencies entirely missing - that may be RUclips) ; please turn down.
Maybe alittle of topic but I assume you are flying the DA62x? If so did you have anyissues getting installed? I dropped it in the Community folder and it never shows in my list. I have NXI installed. also tried it with the WTG1000 installed an uninstalled.
Yes, I do use the DA62X mod. It replaces the standard DA62 in the aircraft list so the is only the one DA62 listed. If the mod is in the community folder it should overwrite the standard one. You can tell its installed if you see the de-ice fluid level at the bottom of the engine display. It will work with the NXi or the WTG1000 mod. Cheers!
Great video, learned a lot by following along. However, not sure if I'm using different version of NXi than you have installed but I do not get all the Approach options to CYLW. Only RNAV are for 16 Y/Z and O A. I get no options for RWY 34 at all. Bug in the system or did yesterdays update mess something up? Other than that small glitch had a good flight following along. Keep up the good vids!
I tried to program the Kelowna RNAV 34Z but it doesn't show up in my list on the GPS. I don't subscribe to Navigraph. Is the only way to get the updated GPS data such as this STAR?
One question. Does Navigraph automatically update the MSFS NAV database or do you need to do something specific once you are logged into Navigraph? Thanks, Steve
You need to download the NavData from Navigraph assuming you have a subscription. I use the the Nav Data Center for Windows. Cheers navigraph.com/account/downloads/navdata
Great video! I noticed you never had to “activate Approach” by clicking PROC button and with words activate approach highlighted and flashing you hit ENT button. Is that a sim thing or true to real world function? Also are you on discord and tracking an issue some have had where the sim freezes right before getting to FAF something to do with the TOD calculation, have you experienced that? I did the RNP approach to RWY 21 Scottsdale AZ and this happened to me. But great to see this working no issues for you on this approach!
It was just by accident I found I didn't have to activate the approach. It seems to allow me to use VNAV to the FAF and then I just arm the approach before the FAF and it seems to transition with no problem. So far I have just had occasional random freezes, They are not happening at any particular point in the approach.
The waypoints don’t even exist anymore the way they are in this procedure. Things change in two years. There’s so many videos from 3 years ago but not much new stuff.
Waypoints are always changing, doesn’t really make a difference in how you setup and fly various procedures so even older videos are still relevant. Cheers!
Yes - You System must be capable of the specified required nav performance listed for the approach. If you look on the chart for the RNP34 in CYLW, there 2 minimum boxes based on what your RNP capability is. If your system is capable of 0.2 NM then you minimums are 1872" feet but if your system is capable of 0,1 NM then your minimums are 1806 feet. I'm not sure what the real limit is of the NXi, I just used the lower one.😉
@@banditflightsimmer6446 Just wanted to let you know that you used a different term for RNP; "Relative Nav Performance" in your video. RNP AR approaches are not available to general aviation pilots. Yes, they are in flight sim but that is only because people are "pretending" to be airline pilots. And yes, an aircraft that has a WAAS GPS is able to meet RNP but you will not find that approach in the aircraft database (you will be able to buy the chart but only an airline will have that in the computer). Personally, I think it's awesome that we can experience them in the sim. Let me know if I can clarify any of this. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the Info, I don't know why I said "Relative", when it is Required Nav Preformance, slip of the tongue. Interesting. I wasn't aware RNP isn't available to GA aircraft. I just assumed that it was in the sim database that it would be available to GA aircraft. I wasn't sure if the NXi could model RNP since on the aircraft I fly ANP (Actual Nav performance is calculated by the FMC and compared to RNP(Required Nav Performance) to ensure you meet the requirements to fly the approach. We input the RNP (eg 0.1) into the FMC based on the minimums we want to fly so now the FMC knows what to compare the ANP to. In any case the NXi mod models the approach it very well and you can easily fly the RNP profile although there is now way to verify RNP. Either way, it is fun to be able to fly These approaches in the SIm.
Dont hold your breath about the scenery graphics being improved. You see it washed out and not as good as before because they have downgraded the graphics so it runs on consoles. They are basically adapting the game to suit the console now rather than what its supposed to be. In other words they will continue to fuck it up so its suitable to run on a console.
@@banditflightsimmer6446 The most money potential is on pc not consoles. Console gamers are just casual with lots of kiddies that cant afford to buy thousands of dollars of addons like the enthusiasts do and have been over the years. If it wasnt on pc there would be no where near the amount of 3rd party developers out there for flight sims. In fact I would say there would be close to none if this was purely a console game.

Cheers!
what device did you say you were using to navigate the G1000 NXi easier? great video

@@banditflightsimmer6446 thanks for info
Great video, learned a lot by following along. However, not sure if I'm using different version of NXi than you have installed but I do not get all the Approach options to CYLW. Only RNAV are for 16 Y/Z and O A. I get no options for RWY 34 at all. Bug in the system or did yesterdays update mess something up? Other than that small glitch had a good flight following along. Keep up the good vids!
I'm using Navigraph Nav Database, maybe it is not included in the MSFS Nav Database.

Thanks for confirming you’re using Navigraph. That’s probably why there is a discrepancy. Cheers!
Great video. Loved watching how good the G1000 and the pilot is at putting in the info. New to this, is navigraph free?
Thanks, No, Navigraph is a monthly subscription.
I tried to program the Kelowna RNAV 34Z but it doesn't show up in my list on the GPS. I don't subscribe to Navigraph. Is the only way to get the updated GPS data such as this STAR?
I believe it only available if you use the Navigraph Database.
@@banditflightsimmer6446 thanks for the quick reply
One question. Does Navigraph automatically update the MSFS NAV database or do you need to do something specific once you are logged into Navigraph?
Thanks,
Steve
You need to download the NavData from Navigraph assuming you have a subscription. I use the the Nav Data Center for Windows. Cheers

where did you find out you need V338 ? Where does it tell you which one to pick or are you using external charts
I used Simbrief to generate a flight plan and I picked a route that used an airway, in this case the V338.

@@banditflightsimmer6446 thank you
I did not see you activate the approach and select APR mode, how did it activate?
In this case I did not have to activate the approach but I did have to ARM the approach prior to the FAF in order to capture the LPV GP.
What airplane are you flying?
Diamond DA62
Does that mean time you use VNAV it will auto activate the RNAV approach?
I'm not sure. If get to the approach and the it doesn't sequence then I will activate it myself.
Great tutorial. Thanks. Do you use any mod for the DA62?
Thanks! Yes, I use the following mod: flightsim.to/file/2733/da62x-project
also how did you know about janek ??
It was in the route generated by SimBrief.
www.simbrief.com/home/index.php
Nice. But if I try to fly with a flight plan the sim crashes! Without a FP it does not crash.
Not sure why that would be the case, my CTDs occur pretty randomly.
So is this more or less how it would go in a real airplane?
Although I have never flown the real DA62 based on my experience flying other aircraft, this is most likely how I would fly this aircraft.
My version does not look the same as yours. Has it gotten worse. Couldn’t put in waypoint details!
Make sure you have the G1000 NXi installed, it is free in the MarketPlace.
on Xbox series x, it's impossible to load airways...
I'm not sure about the features available for the XBox version but make sure you have the latest version of the NXi installed.

Thanks!
@@banditflightsimmer6446 Very, very good your work, your didactics. Great teaching. We appreciate more tutorials like this!
The waypoints don’t even exist anymore the way they are in this procedure. Things change in two years. There’s so many videos from 3 years ago but not much new stuff.
Waypoints are always changing, doesn’t really make a difference in how you setup and fly various procedures so even older videos are still relevant. Cheers!
RNP... "Required Navigation Performance"
Unfortunately that is where they see the most money potential. I have found the graphics to be better after HF2.

These tiktok adverts are pathetic,,
I don't think I've seen those.
@@banditflightsimmer6446 you're very lucky, they come up everytime!!
So many filler "uhs" and drawn out words like "aannnndddd"....I swear you said "uh" like 10 times in the first 1:20. Learn how to narrate if you're going to make videos.
Thanks for the feedback. By the way, I’m not a professional narrator, I don’t script the videos and I only do these to help out fellow flight simmers. If it annoys you so much, you don’t have to watch them, but I will try to reduce the “uhs”. Cheers!
Great video. Thanks!
