McGrath refused to go ,was terrified of drinking again.
McCarthy effectively frog marched him down, saying he wouldn't play if he didn't go.
McGrath ended up pissed , McCarthy dropped him from the squad ,and big Paul retired afterwards.

Alluded to it himself. 9 goals in 33 games and 4 of them came in one match against San Marino. Didn’t make enough of the chances he had for England where guys like Shearer did. Can’t agree more about him being a great bloke and good for the dressing room though!
