    the 3D remakes are probably brighter and more colorful because of the portable format, so they are easier to see. it's a common trick developers use for handled games. so it's probably more of a practical choice than an artistic one

      Yep, they most likely did in on purpose for being portable. Dark areas are BAD on handhelds, especially when it's sunny.
      Just last week I've tried playing new Pokemon Snap outside. The day levels were fine, but the nightlevels absolutely unplayable, even tough I wasn't directly in the sun.
      Therefore I can totally understand that decison. It might be more atmospheric and a little bit nicer when the game is rather dark, but a Handheld Port that isn't playable outside kinda defeats the purpose.

    • @ShadowMan64572
      @ShadowMan64572 3 года назад +17

      They could make the game as dark as they wanted, a simple gamma control option would compensate for the handheld screen without sacrificing art style.

    Honestly, one of the only things they changed about the 3DS version that I actually liked was the inverted song of time speed. I think the nerf to how much it slows down the clock (intentional or not) really helped to actually preserve the tension of the 3 day cycle. Too bad they screwed it up by giving 2 of the bosses stupidly drawn out second phases.

    • @Monsuco
      @Monsuco Год назад +5

      There used to be speed runners who would try to beat all of Majora's Mask in a single 3 day cycle using the 1/3 speed inverted song of time. This kinda broke those challenge runs.

    For the brighter colors thing, I think it's just a hit-or-miss depending on what the situation is, and I don't think it's inherently bad for the game.
    Stuff like the poison water in the Swamp Temple are pretty terrible, and the saturation should've been lower. However, the overall increased saturation or at least just in some areas can help play up the weird psychedelic horror-esque aspects of the game. This is kind of reflected through the art, like the mayor being overall incredibly drab except for the bright purple hair.
    The real problem I think they missed out on is the contrast with the shadows, like the Gyorg boss room. If the shadows in that room were more extreme, it would look more like the original version without being incredibly dull looking.

    @Stuke51 2 года назад +18

    I love playing this on Citra so much now. I replaced the 3ds soundtrack with a fanmade remastered soundtrack and with the 4k texture pack. The over-brightening is really the only gripe I have with it now. Everything else about it far exceeds the original and vanilla 3DS version. I personally could care less about the owl statue save system from the original because sometimes things come up IRL and I need to quit the game.

  • @Neganium
    @Neganium 2 года назад +29

    Actually, I would argue that Majora's Mask's official artwork- especially that one early promotional image that they used a lot, even if the game itself wound up looking pretty different- is actually MORE colorful than OoT's standard... but at the same time, uses sharper contrasts and shading. It kind of pops with a sort of... almost unreality feel to it, sometimes. Apparently some early concept artwork for the game was even more batshit than the final ended up being, which, god. So yeah, bright colors are not offensive to me; but I DO prefer the darker LIGHTING, at least. Maybe the 3DS was not capable of as dynamic shading as it would need to be to properly emulate the actual art style of the game. Reusing assets is probably another issue.
    Things have probably changes since this video was made, so idk for sure about this mod and people's ability to change things in the game. I also never played the 3DS remake bc I never got to own a 3DS (I am ABSOLUTELY bitter about that, heh). From what I see the bossfights look more fun, gross cartoony eyeballs aside.

      Most notably, the GCN version has a tendency to crash when you enter Great Bay in particular, but the emulation is unstable enough it can crash basically anywhere. The aiming is also really bad due to not being adjusted for the GCN's analog stick.

    The thing is, the N64 Zelda’s were clunky as hell. The 3DS remakes alleviated most of the issues, but now the issue remains where PC emulators still have to use the touchscreen to navigate the menus. If that could be changed so that the touchscreen is no longer needed on Citra, they’d probably be the definitive versions of these titles.

    The graphics while dated, add to the oppressive, depressing atmosphere
    The UI design is pretty good (When d-pad is in use, love you Redux)
    The music is amazing
    The gameplay and structure is so unique
    But god damn that 20fps cap, I hate that 20fps cap so god damn much, that *one* system limitation of the N64 not being able to keep up with 30fps OoT and MM has kept me from going back and playing the original versions because it just feels and looks like complete dogshit to me. The atmosphere, audio and gameplay of the original eclipses the 3DS remake in almost every way. I still think the updated saving, Bomber's Notebook, and gyro controls are improvement enough, but the 3D Restoration mod has polished the remaining rough edges better than Nintendo did and it's the best modern version of Majora's Mask in my opinion.

    Honestly the only thing that truly annoys me is the Odolwa changes HOWEVER if you fight him using the Bow and not the Deku Mask the fight is MUCH more enjoyable. Otherwise I think Goht and Gyorg are much better than the original fights which can be easily cheesed in the N64 version by just constantly Rolling/Magic Swim at them. The Zora Swimming changes are not that big of a deal imo and I actually like that Blue potions and Romani Milk are actually viable in the 3DS version where it actually forces you to use up your magic meter and making the Magic upgrade that much more impactful. I also don't really mind the Deku hop changes cause you can just Side-Hop onto the water to get that original boost like in the N64 version which adds that little bit more skill depth to the Swamp area on the 3DS. Overall I think both version have their own strengths and weaknesses and there is no definitive version which honestly I think makes Majora's Mask overall that much better when you actually have a reason to play both the N64 version AND the 3DS version.

      @Some Guy though I do agree the N64 version is the overall best I have to disagree about the 3DS version being "unplayable". I would say it's still a good game in it's own right. Like I said before, the Odolwa fight is the biggest blemish on the 3DS version imo and the changes to Twinrova are questionable but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as what they did to Odolwa and I think Goht and Gyorg are just fine with how they changed them so they can't be cheesed easily like in the N64 version. (Especially Goht, you can just side hop back and forth into line of sight and shoot arrows at him on N64 OR get the right angle on him while Goron rolling and just kill him in one cycle like how you can do the same with Gyorg with Zora magic swimming)

    • @ninjafrog6966

      honestly i don’t agree with the zora swimming. i get making chateau romani more useful, but compromising the zora swimming isn’t the way to do it. there should’ve been a better way to make chateau romani more useful, but this isn’t the way to do it, not when it compromises the zora gameplay by having to veer out of the way to hit magic pots, and the fact that they added no magic to the bay after moving shiro to the fortress, meaning if you get to the fortress after draining your magic, you’re not seeing him

One thing that I've greatly appreciated though was the fact that in the 3DS version you can skip to specific times, rather than skipping only to dawn of the next day or to night. But I can also recommend Citra with a texture pack and the restoration mod. I'm not sure why you were having performance issues in Citra with this game. It could potentially be a problem with Ryzen drivers, but either way, Citra has been updated a lot since this video came out and the few small oddities I myself experienced when emulating MM 3D appear to have been fixed. Hey just felt like helping you out a bit with the Citra emulation. I don't know how much you know about emulation, but one of the big issues with emulating modern consoles is "shader cache stutter". Basically, GPUs have these programs to help them do a lot more than they could with hardware alone, and consoles have been using them since the 6th gen, but while PCs have uber powerful shader programs and they do most of the shader rendering and caching during load times on PC games, consoles do it basically whenever. This can lead to stutter because the game wants your GPU to compile a shader, and that can take time, because CPU calls have to wait for the GPU to finish rendering. Other emulators got around this by doing something called "asynchrounous shader compilation" which means the CPU won't wait for the GPU to finish rendering and the game won't stutter. A major downside is that it creates extreme pop-in, and some games which rely on synchronous CPU GPU calculations will break, like Metroid Prime Trilogy for example. The silver lining in all this is that all this only happens the first time you play. You won't get stuttering again until you maybe update your driver or swap your GPU, because Citra created a shader cache to draw from so it never has to do the same real-time calculations again, thus increasing performance on repeat playthroughs.
    P. S. - Play Citra in fullscreen with the window active, otherwise you'll get stuttering like you saw in the video. At least, that's how I solved it.

    • @MrKnytt
      @MrKnytt 3 года назад +3

      Also, Dolphin's solution to this was to create a massive shader library to draw from on game start, which is super GPU intensive, and takes years of work to finish PER CONSOLE, assuming the console, aside from shader emulation, is almost 100% accurate. So Dolphin no longer suffers from this problem because their devs are some of the best in the homebrew scene, and they're 100% butt-fuck insane.

    i think you have a bit of nostalgia bias going on in some places, and this comes from someone who grew up on the n64 version. no way after the restoration project is not the better version objectively in the vast majority of ways. also for most players, yeah, 20fps is just even if i am an older guy by now, 20fps is absolute garbage, heavy and unpleasant on the eyes. and you can almost count the frames. it destroys immersion for me, let alone for anyone who grew up in a time not used to playing something that's slightly more fluid than a game and watch game

    • @Fonald3D
      @Fonald3D  4 года назад +16

      First I just wanna say thanks for watching the whole video and managing to put up with me for that long. I really appreciate people taking the time to watch long videos from someone relatively new like myself.
      But funnily enough I don't think I really have much nostalgia for Majora's Mask, though I get what you mean. I grew up playing OOT and MM on the Gamecube, but as a kid I was far too stupid to make it past Woodfall. I first beat it on the 3DS when that version came out, then went back and beat the N64 version about two years ago. I didn't feel much nostalgia for it all, but I did feel like it was a more rewarding, challenging and moody experience than what I had beat on the 3DS after high school.
      I feel great nostalgia for the N64 version of OOT, but not enough to blind me that the 3DS version will be the far more enjoyable experience for most people, old and new. I don't think the same is true for adults who're curious about MM.
      I think the aesthetics of the experience are a huge part of why people loved Majora's Mask. They're perfect, and that's why it's such a shame that Grezzo fumbled the audio and wrecked the ambiance of so many environments to make the game more visually clear for portable play. The Anju/Kafei scene is one of the most especially egregious changes. In the original, the dim light coming through the window of the inn really made it feel like Link, Anju and Kafei were standing on the edge of time at the end of the world - "We shall greet the morning together." In the remake, it's completely flat and lifeless. If that was just one moment out of a whole game (see Ganon in OOT3D), I wouldn't care too much. But they ballsed up the mood of so many huge scenes that I find it hard to just take it as a trade-off.
      I generally don't like remakes outside of a few obvious choices like REmake and Halo 2 Anniversary. I think almost everyone could agree that they're more bad than good. People who are barely into video games may struggle with older graphics, but I think people who feel passionate about vidya need to get over it a bit. Outside of cases where the old game is borderline unplayable or its just a resolution bump/QoL changes, I usually recommend people play the original instead to expand their horizons and appreciate gaming history a bit.
      I don't think there's a hard rule about it, but people should do their homework in these situations, that's why I made this video. This is totally anecdotal, but in my experience, the people who ALWAYS go for the remakes are the same people who find black and white movies "unwatchable" because they've never challenged themselves to enjoy something beyond their time.
      I really regret that I didn't know about the N64 Majora's Mask REDUX mod before I made this video too. It adds masks on the Dpad, arrow switching and a few other good QoL changes similar to Restoration.
      The 3DS's 30fps is objectively superior to 20fps for sure, but after two minutes of playing the Wii VC version, I rarely ever thought about it myself. The unsteady 20-15fps on the N64 hardware is absolutely shithouse though, you're right. But at a rock solid locked 20fps on emulators, it never personally bothered me.
      Sorry for the wall of text, but I figured this comment might be useful for other viewers who have the same thoughts as you. I probably should have addressed that in the video, but I wanted to keep things concise. Thanks again for watching and giving your thoughts, have a good one.

      From an objective standpoint, the 3ds version with the fix is technically superior and carries across lots of the missed quality-of-life things Nintendo missed; but he still prefers the original because the mood of the core game - through music, visual style and challenge - weren't as accurately portrayed. As someone who actually did play the original game on the N64 when it came out as a kid and has played it countless times throughout the decades, I'm generally ok on the 3DS version. The absolute biggest problem for me with the changes was the bomber notebook. For every little step of every little side quest it pulls out the book and makes a mark that takes literally eight seconds. It's so insanely tedious to deal with. Especially as someone who knows the game inside and out.
    For something like the Don Gero Mask it's ridiculous. You light the torches, that's an eight second unskippable cutscene. You roll and break the right chandelier. That's another eight second unskippable cutscene. You just PICK UP THE ROCK that's another unskippable eight second cutscene. You carry it to Don Gero and throw it up to him, you better believe that's another unskippable eight second custcene. When you find each frog that's another four unskippable eight second cutscenes, one for each frog. And then when you conduct the frog choir, that is indeed another eight second unskippable custcene telling you that you got a piece of heart. It's pure torture and makes me not want to play it. If it just did a little box on the bottom that lasts for half a second like the original, it would be fine. But no, apparently we have to handhold the player through every tiny little thing. Please Nintendo why.
    Other than that, yes the Zora swimming sucks. It's such a pointless change. But I could live with it if the bombers' notebook were not as bad. Or at least optional. It's given to you at the beginning instead of by the bombers on the second run finding them as a human, it's not optional.

    I have no idea what you did with your graphics settings but the game ran perfect for me on every single PC I tried... I suggest you use the default settings and then just increase the revolution, and activate the custom textures if you have them installed

    As someone who has played the n64 and gcn versions religiously, I would highly recommend emulating with Citra. This is coming from someone who now only owns a PC and emulates everything. With the patch, it felt so authentic and the controls for Citra made the touchscreen practically useless aside from the map (which I love because fuck motion and touch controls). So if you're someone who dislikes Nintendo's incessant need to incorporate shitty unintuitive controls instead of those that have been tried and true for over 30 years - try Citra. That said, I only recently did so on Citra, so back in 2020 it could've been worse.

    Older video, but kinda weird that you call Majora's Mask's difficulty tense. The amount of health you get is less than OoT if you're following only the main scenario, since there're less full heart containers, but OoT and MM are both ridiculously easy and forgiving games as far as combat goes.
    I think the changes were dumb too, but not because the original MM had good, tense combat.

    Thanks so much for this. I'll drop a comment on nerrel's vid so hopefully more of the viewers can find this and play the fix

    As much as the remake has terrible changes, I think we can all agree that the new 1/2 Reverse song of time makes it a bit more challenging. If in the original it was 1/2 and the remake made it 1/3 fans would complain that it was dumbed down to make it easier.

      Yeah but it also makes challenge runs harder. I've only played the 3DS version, and after I first played it I learned in the original it was possible to do a challenge run of completing the game in one cycle and I was so disappointed learning you couldn't do it in the remake. I'm really tempted to finally try it now with the patch though.

    Have you tried to change the screen options in luma by holding L, d-arrow and select to make it look darker? I've put the temperature to 5200k, the brightness to -0.10, the contrast to 1.20 and the gamma to 1.50 and the very first area in the game looks almost the same colors of the n64 ver, i plan to play the game later because i want to beat oot first so if someone who got to later parts of the game could tell me if those screen options look good in almost every part of the game i'd appreciate

    You are a very hardcore gamer. Most people don’t even think about changes like this.
