    I still find somehow "difficult" to upgrade, playing at 3440x1440 with an 4080 will give me a nice jump, but maybe not so much. So I'm actually thorn on what to do. I'll probably wait the release of 9900x3d and 9950x3d, cause I also use my rig for editing and compositing, so more cores will be useful for sure. Thanks for the tests!

    Thanks for the review, appreciate all the efforts to bring us your findings.
    On optimisation, generally you get that towards the end of development cycle (avoiding duplication of effort). What should make the biggest improvement to performance will be fully functional Vulkan drivers including proper multi-threading support etc. If they focus on anything right now it's that. Especially (and hats off to you for testing current builds :) given current state of the game.
    Given the results and general good reviews for the 9800X3D for gaming generally, it suggests further improvements available for the CPU when Vulkan/ optimisation arrives.

    Super grateful to have such a knowledgeable and resourceful individual as you in the Star Citizen community.
    I hoped my pc would last 7 years when I built it, which was 6 years ago, even with only 16GB RAM it still runs SC fine. If SQ42 was launching in 2025 I would probably build one for that, but now I'm hoping this sales period next year will be a nice time.
    I don't know, do you others who enjoy having a high end PC like to build a really powerful one to last for many years and probably have no resale value, or do you constantly update to new components and sell the old ones?
    I see the usual retailer here in Norway (Komplett) has started experimenting with a monthly cost instead of upfront, where you can return the product for a newer one every 24 months, you at least don't have to bother with selling privately that way.

    • @davewills6121
      @davewills6121 13 дней назад

      With PC Gaming you really have 2 options, 1. build the very best Rig you can afford, that way you give yourself some headroom, such as i did with the 3090/4090, or 2. Buld the best, most flexible budget Rig you can manage, with an emphisis on OverClocking the shit out of it. Focus is always on Core Count, more the merrier, and the best GPU you can afford. I dont need to upgrade for a couple of yrs at least, yet spent many yrs on a tight budget, always borderline performance and not doing much forward thinking. Star Citizen is a very poor example for any kind of benchmark, its like having a junkie as a best friend.
      Not sure if your credits anygood, but that might be th best springboard you'll get, especially if they offer ''Buy Now Pay Later'', postboning the 1st payment for 12months. Good luck

    I have a 5800x3d / 4080 Super system and a 7800x3d / 4090 system. *I dumped the 7900xtx because of the vapor chamber issues I suffered. The 9800x3d / 5090 - is a generation I plan to skip this time. 9800x3d is clearly faster, but it's not enough to chase the upgrade at this point. Moore's law's insight into the 5090 MSRP has also made me consider skipping that GPU generation with my recent refreshes. I'm good for now! Love the work you do, my systems are 100% SC dedicated. I need to stop being lazy and tune my RAM, but I do not think it makes a huge difference with these x3D chips :)

    The biggest difference to previous generations is that the 9800x3d can actually be overclocked without cooking itself due to the 3d cache now being below the ccd. Since the game likes clock speed this can be a significant factor for a purchasing decision. If you leave it stock you wont gain nearly as much. The correct ram and settings for the infinity fabric are as important as ever.

    I’m actually in the market right now for a new cpu and motherboard. I’m upgrading from an ancient i7 6700k and I’m torn between the 7800x3d and the 9700x. I realize the 7800x3d is more powerful than the 9700x, but the chip alone is $200 more (in Canada) compared to the 9700x, and the bundle I can get a 9700x with motherboard and ram is $678 vs about $1150 for the 7800x and I really don’t want to spend that much right now.

    The game is really unoptimized and it requires a lot of work.
    Typically if you get a mid-range to high-range build you'll get 40-100 fps for Star Citizen, but you'll fly in every other AAA optimized game.

    It's a shame that the 285K was a disappointment for gaming. A well overclocked 14900KS can still contend with the 9800X3D in some games, but at insane risk of degradation or just an overwhelmingly high power draw. Maybe if the rumours are true, they'll put the IMC on the compute tile with the 385K. The 285K has a 77ns roundtrip latency for the IMC, whereas Raptor Lake and Lunar Lake have a 55ns latency.

      Not that easy since these speeds are reserved for expensive RAM which often requires additional cooling (and air cooling is ineffective), stability is an issue as benchmarking is one thing, running stable - another. I'm saying that because I own 14900KF with proper RAM, but using it over 8000 has always been an issue. Runs great until it deces not to after some reboot.
