I believe that they had one of these BNSF Dash 8's that was brand new and on display when we went to RailFair in Sacramento in 1999. I walked through the cab and was pretty impressed. But it was brand spanking new and even smelled like it. Anyone else remember that? Anyway these were also a familiar site along the shared UP and BNSF mainline between Seattle and Portland Oregon which boasts over 60 trains passing through there at speed daily.

This is just a deadhead move. Too many good locomotives to be on the way to scrap. And old diesels of this kind aren't usually scrapped in that way, anyway. They're recycled. Too many usable parts. Even then, when they are of no use to the AT&SF, they'll be sold to a series of short and shorter lines, often extending their operation for another 20 years.
In normal operations, an imbalance of head-end power often accumulates in certain areas, especially where loads and grades indicate a lot of power inbound, but not much outbound. Pretty soon a deadhead train takes them back to where they are most needed. I'm not going to say it's impossible, but given the condition of those engines, scrapping is not even remotely in their futures. Of course, this was 7 years ago. Maybe some are gone NOW (2017), but that's not where they were going THEN (2010).

Since 2015 I have seen 3 different trains made up of engines sitting on a siding at Humphrey Arkansas waiting it's turn to get back on the main line and go either north or south. I've often wondered if these were going somewhere for repair, being moved to a new location or what. There's always a bunch of different company names on them. The train uses the whole siding.... approximately 1 mile in length.

Erie Plant has begun rebuilding in 2016. We had a number of NS & CSX rebuilt into AC evo's. The NS's had all the cabs removed and the platform inverted into station 1 for BSA re-assembly. The CSX's only removed engine cab & engines, rebuilding the other cabs on the platform. Once the NS process was established, the remaining units were sent to Ft Worth Texas to be completed. GE is hoping for more based on the successes of these first ventures. I work in Erie GE, bldg. 10 Final Assembly, station 1, BSA.

Those are probably what’s called a power move. For example it could be that more power is needed at the west coast. Also those type of trains are very hard to stop , it takes further to stop than a regular train using train car brakes. If you get hit at a railroad crossing at 70mph by one of these, they will stop probably 1 and a 1/2 miles from the crossing.
