One of the greatest changes between the book and film was changing the trains from being pulled by Diesel locomotives to Steam Engines. That shot of the smoke rising above the trees is perfect, you wouldn't have gotten that with Diesels. And beyond that, the bell, whistle, and chuffing add so much to the tension and chaos of this scene.
Diesels have smoke rising out of their vents too. The horn is intense, along with the rumbling and humming of the Prime Motor, that would created intensity too.
Diesels can smoke too but usually on the older one since the newer ones are made for efficiency so it smokes less
I went to see this bridge (trestle ) in June 2024. It is in Northern California, close to the border with Oregon. It is closed. They put two huge cement blocks at the entrance of the bridge. I climbed those cement blocks and stood on the bridge. They removed the metal train tracks. The railroad ties are still there, but they are very old and brittle. If you notice in this video, there are only a few trees in the background. There are many, many trees (Douglas Fir ) now. It was hushed, and you could only hear the sound of birds. It is like in the movie.
I've seen pictures, just like you described. I bet it is so beautiful? Definitely on my bucket list.
3:16 Love how the engineer ringing the bell is looking at the driver and back at the kids like "Hey Bill, can you believe these kids? Think they can run off the bridge in time?"
@Trey Epperley I don't know much about steam trains
@Trey Epperley & back in the days before FREDs, defect detectors, & other technology the railroads have nowadays, the conductor rode in the caboose instead of up in the cab of the engine with the engineer.
What are they going to say at the station?
xD
I love this story. 4 young friends go on a journey in order to find a dead boy killed by a train. And they also are nearly killed by it. This just enforces the idea of the train being an actual danger and makes you imagine about how the boy was killed.
Maybe he wanted to try dodging it… a way to illustrate what could’ve happened to Teddy had Chris not saved him.
Fun fact about the filming of this scene. The train was in a safe distance for the up-close running scenes with Wil Wheaton and Jerry O'Connell running, but the first couple takes they weren't very scared. Director Rob Reiner literally yelled at them for not being scared and tiring out the crew pushing a camera flat car on the bridge. He yelled out if they weren't scared of the train coming after them, they better start running cause he will come after them. Next thing you know they were terrified and cut, print.
Sounds like something my mom would do, that’s awesome🤣
According to Will Wheaton, that was the only time Rob Reiner yelled at them for any reason.
NGL: Vern crying while the train is bearing down on him cracks me up!
And the train is played by McCloud River Railroad #25. Which is now in operation at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad located in Garibaldi, Oregon.
That sounds fake
A Catholic high school in Akron has a railroad line that runs right behind the school that goes over an old canal. A lot of students back in the 70s and 80s would use the RR trestle as a shortcut to a nearby restaurant. I think a few students died on that bridge back when it was owned by the Norfolk and Western RR. No steam engines back in those days.
Are you referring to St Vincent St Mary’s?
I grew up in the late 40's in NE Portland, OR....right next to a canyon which the steam locomotives of the day regularly chug-chugged through....while my father had worked in the shipyards building ships for WW 2. Just about every household in the area had a 5-ton coal bin in thier front yard for thier home heater..... however, seems like ours was often empty. Mom often sent me down into the canyon with a small bucket to pick up coal which had dropped off from passing trains....and, while watching out for passing trains, I usually returned with a full bucket. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe steam trains have now become history for about 50 years....with "Flying Saucers" now becoming a real hot issue....of which I have now seen four...and, I mean up close!
I like how the train engineers didn't even try to slow down. I think they even accelerated.
doubt it
Remember that a train carrying tons of cargo can’t stop on a dime.
Trains can’t stop as fast like cars.
That train could of easily stopped in time
Probably not, because the train shows to be slowing down.
Gordie is a real one in this scene, it was obvious he could easily outrun Vern but stayed behind him the whole time to keep him from falling behind & dying. One of my favorite movies 🎬

They could have been off the bridge sooner if they had just continued walking or if Teddy did not hold them up
@@trevorcolby532 Good point.
@@mrtrainmaster8007 Thanks and want to know why I said Teddy hold them up and why Vern was crawling?
Would you wait for the next train to pass by, go around, swim or go to the 136 bridge?
Meanwhile at the other end of the bridge, a hunting dog chases a Fox onto the bridge and quickly realizes he has made a terrible mistake…while directly underneath, a group of vampires drop one by one while calling for a guy named Michael to join them.
Nice statement, but i don't anything about vampires and guy named Michael.
@@micharosa6201 I think he's talking about that scene from the movie The Lost Boys when those dudes were hanging on from underneath the railroad bridge as the train was going over it & there was a lot of fog underneath that bridge. Keifer Sutherland who played the bully Ace in Stand By Me also played in The Lost Boys. He played one of the vampires.
It is definitely true what is said in this movie. "You never have friends like the ones you had when you were 12," and if you're lucky, you even get to keep a couple of them for life.
This scene still makes me panic, even though I’ve seen it so many times and know the outcome 😳🚂😅

Funny how the driver had plenty of distance to stop even for a train yet didn’t even attempt to slow down.
They aren't gonna be able too stop in time like trains are very heavy like heavier then a weight bro like it takes a while too stop

This scene is about as emotional as them finding the dead body
Esta escena es la mejor recreación cinematográfica de una obra de Stepehen King en mi opinión.
I love how the engineer easily could have stopped or slowed down but all they did was blow the horn😂
trains can not stop on an dime.
@this train very much could stop quickly. Those PSA’s you see today about trains needing 2 miles to come to a stop are talking about the 2 mile long freight trains and heavy steel freight cars. This is a 5 car train going at a running pace.

For all the 'train could have slowed or stopped' commenters, don't forget this story is told through the eyes of four kids, so any amount of roar from the train seemed to them like the end of the line. Also, I doubt we'd be here 35+ years later re-watching this epic scene if the train slowed down and they casually sauntered off the tracks.
Obviously it didn’t stop for cinematic reasons, but it doesn’t take away from the fact the a train this size going at this speed in real life could stop pretty quick, relatively speaking.
People seem to have it drilled into their heads that all trains ever need 2 miles to stop, which may be true today with the length, weight, and speed of some of our trains, but it’s not true here.
I have this movie it's awesome I love this movie
Kid: TRAÌIIIIIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me: oh no
Yes! Some of the clips had me laughing at how slow the train was going and how it just kept going! But then we wouldn’t be left with this epic scene! I know it takes a while to stop! I’m an engineer myself, so I don’t need any lectures! It’s a movie! Lighten up!

the engine on the bridge was a McCloud River Railroad 2-6-2 Prairie type #25 with a southern lima 5 chime.
Thank you
I knew it had a lima 5 chime. In parts of this movie featuring the train, The whistle sounds a lot like Sierra #3's lima 5 chime. Sierra #3 is the movie star locomotive seen in movies and shows like Back To The Future 3 and Petticoat Junction in case you didn't know.
Such a good movie❤watched it many times
Bruh the driver didn’t want to press the brakes 💀
Even if this was real, the ENGINEER couldn't APPLY the brakes fast enough.
@@alexlorenz4103it takes 2 seconds to apply the brakes.
While I don't think the train could fully stop in time, the engineer could have released the steam pressure from the pistons to start slowing. That would be a little more realistic and still maintain the suspense to the very end of the bridge.
I feel bad, but Vern crying just makes me fucking laugh. I'm sorry

The engineer could have slowed down the train as it was coming on the bridge. It wasn’t a heavy freight train. It only had 3 railroad cars on it. The engineer wanted to see those boys run.
@Jurassic Hero this is the 1950s, Steam Locomotives by then are legally required to have not only steam breaks for the engine's driver wheels, but air brakes connected to the frieght cars that can be controlled from the engine's cab. That engine was going at a crawling speed too.. Realistically speaking, that engine could've stopped let alone slow down.

It’s funny the engineer is doing slow down. Oh wait they couldn’t.
Can't help but notice the train didn't even attempt to slow down
I don’t think they can
I mean even if they did trains don’t stop very quickly
Yeah it’s a long process
Imagine your stuck on the tracks for no reason and there is a freight train and there is an engineer that noticed you a mile away and then you think he did not slam on the brakes because you did not see the train slowing down and in heaven you notice it was carrying 103 heavy freights the engineers in the movie were trying to stop I see them panicking my future job is being a freight engineer and I would act the same as these engineer if someone was on the train tracks
So yeah trains can’t stop on a dime
You know those Engineers were in that train like...
"What how fast we make these lil' mofos 💩 their pants".
RIP River Phoenix
They should’ve waited for train to come then cross
Stephen King says that when he was at Maine University, there was a train tresle (which is now abandoned) that ran across the Stillwater River. And at the time, apparently, it was a rite of passage or a dare to cross the river on the trestle.
I bet there running because the train was coming 3:10
Yeah, it's obvious.
Nah i thought they were running from slenderman
After several grueling hours of thoroughly analyzing this scene. I, too, have come to the same conclusion.
Still can’t figure out if that’s why Vern is running. Can’t be the train 2 feet behind him, right?
If Vern wasn't crawling from the getgo, they'd have been way ahead of the point they were at when train appeared...meaning they wouldn't have even had such a close call. I never could Vern in this movie even when I first saw it in 4th grade, dead weigh😒.
The boys chitchated for 52 seconds, the train took 46 seconds to cross the bridge, if the boys started walking at the beginning they would have made across without worry.
Bro that's like the coolest video ever
There was enough space to step aside.
A train that short, going that slow could've easily slowed down for the kids to get off the bridge. But i guess they decided their schedule was more important 😅
those boys should be careful next time.

lol that train had no load behind it. Could have easily stopped in like 4 seconds. That train conductor was evil as hell.
