I never used to truly understand this scene but Teddy has some major issues in his childhood and I love when he says I don’t need a babysitter and Chris says you do too because Chris knows about Teddys problems and just wants to look out for him. A true friend
Yes he was he cared about his friends, and he cared about Gordy later telling him how messed up his parents are if they can't watch out for him maybe he should.
Fun fact. The friends in this movie were actually based on Stephen King’s real life friends he had in his youth who unfortunately had died before the movie was made.
Teddy is lowkey my favorite character.. he has heart but borderline crazy lol always seeing how far he can take shit ! Lol and he knows how to talk shit 🤣
The interesting thing to note is in the book Chris dies the same way. But Vern died in a house fire in college. And Teddy died in a car accident Leaving Gordon the last survivor of the trip. They changed it in the movie and I think Teddy ends up as a handyman and Vern a forklift operator. The original outcome of those two must have been too depressing for the movie’s somewhat uplifting message.
Also the four experience a fierce beating at the hands of Ace and his gang. I have the book and one of the differences is that Chris is the only one to die in the movie. In the book all die except for Gordie.
i like the movie ending better. they may not be in contact with gordie, but they're still living their lives normally, presumably in a better place than they used to be. there's still a possibility they might still be friends if they meet again. also, in the book, chris died at the age of 23, about to finish his career. at least in the movie he got to graduate and leave town like he wanted, even if he was cut short.
All four of these kids had some sort of issue that they were dealing with and they all had each other to bond with and cope with. That's what friendship is all about!
Fun Fact: In this part of Stand By Me the train is played by McCloud River Railroad #19, a 2-8-2 “Mikado” built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in April 1915. This is one of two McCloud River Railroad steam locomotives used in the film, with the other being McCloud River Railroad 25 (Now in operation at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad located in Garibaldi, Oregon). It was also used in the 1973 film Emperor of the North. Today this locomotive is undergoing a operational restoration work at the Age of Steam Roundhouse located in Sugarcreek, Ohio.
Trains are huge objects and even though they are moving very fast their size obscures their actual speed, like an airliner approaching an airport looks like it’s moving very slowly. When the train is on you and you realize how fast it’s actually going, you’d be lucky to dodge anything. Chris saved his life there.
I lived in a small town USA nd me and friends did some crazy shit around the train tracks nd use to practice our baseball throws see who can throw in between the train carts. Good times also it was it haunted at night

@ haley malloy Exactly. Yup. It’s been a while but I believe part of the movie was the abuse he suffered at the hands of his dad. Acting like he was on Normandy (risking his life) was a reference to his hero worship of his father, who stormed the beach at Normandy. The irony is he is imitating someone who hates him while he is fighting a friend who cares. That’s, at least, the subtext. Been a while since I saw this one.
Fun fact: the locomotive in this scene is McCloud River Railway 19. The locomotive was also featured on the Silver screen in 1973 movie 'Emperor of the North'. Number 19 is still around, but she's currently at the Age of Steam roundhouse in Sugarcreek Ohio awaiting an overhaul.

Funny thing is, that's the same locomotive that's used in the 1973 film "Emperor Of The North". More specifically, McCloud River Railroad (Oregon Pacific & Eastern Railroad) 2-8-2 #19.
#25 is operational, and #18 is in a museum in Colorado. The bridge still exists and is fenced off from trespassers, but there's plans to make that and the tracks used here a trail.

At first glance you might think that Teddy is just crazy and reckless but the truth is he is the most complex character in the group. He suffers because his father has gone crazy because of the horrors of war, he loves the man even though he abused him.
