Wouldn't normally watch as its a simple job, but as your videos are so interesting I thought I'd give it a go. You did a fantastic job probably one of the best I've seen, you knew all the torque settings and some good tips. I see a lot where the presenter doesn't know what he is doing, so well done you.
The oil comes out in such a burst, both on this bike and my GTL, that after MANY spills like yours, I've found that putting a rag into the pan makes for a little less splash, and I hold the pan up to the drain plug with one hand while doing the final plug loosening turns with the other. Much less splash, and once the flow is going, you can start lowering the pan back down to the ground.
Probably trading my 2017 f700GS this week for 2019 R1250RT. I like to do as much of my own maintenance as I can. Cheaper and I won't mess up my bike like some BMW techs have in the past. Thanks for the info vid. Liked and Subscribed. Cheers from Daytona Beach, Florida USA
Hello from Seattle! Definitely watched this a couple times before changing my GS's oil. I made sure to move the oil catch as far forward as possible to avoid a mess. In the end, the torrent of oil shooting out of the engine hit a divot in the catch and sprayed all over my garage anyway. *sigh* Always a messy job it seems.
"we all don't live in Romania"...lol.... my first thought was ..who cant change their oil, but like you mentioned, there are a few good tips..nicely done sir.. well, except for that oil spill :)
harder to do now the oil filter is mounted horizontally, but i would have pre filled it to some degree; prevents momentary oil starvations. I also like to ride the bike under load to increase pressure right after a change. Prob.not crucial.
"...we don't all live in Romania!" Funny yet sad, if pouring oil down the drain by the sidewalk still happens. It used to be the norm, but I was hoping that environmental awareness had prevailed in the 30 years since I left. I use a large tin tray under the oil canister to avoid spills.
f700GS rider here. May be buying r1250rt this week. Change your oil once a year if you put on only a few miles. The oil gets shitty just sitting and should be changed. Better for your engine and if u do it yourself it's cheap enough. Cheers from Daytona Beach, Florida.
The slippery kind. I use OEM because its relatively cheap and I'm assuming its BMW recommended. I have used expensive full synthetic oil in the past and didn't notice a difference other that it was green and smelled better. Thank you for the awesome and helpful video.
In a horizontal mount filter, PARTIALLY fill the filter with oil just enough so that when installed it does NOT purge and rotate to adequately saturate the media inside throughout, then install. This critically reduces the time gap - typically about 10-15 seconds of the engine running dry. On vertical mount application engines of any application you have the benefit of nearly fully filling the filter before installation. Dry running ain't a good thing. Next time place a sacrificial large towel on the floor underneath and around to absorb the obvious splash if you use that ill suited - ill designed little oil pan whose opening is the size of Joe Biden's "brain", for that matter ANY liberal's "brain". (A standard large pail would work vastly better and then you can pour from that into the aforementioned liberal pan. Also, use aluminum foil in place of the rag underneath the oil filter to catch and guide the dripping oil into, that's right....., the larger pan.

Love you too, John!
❤️❤️❤️ your videos are pure gold!!! I love them so much! Please don’t ever stop.
Thanks for the oil change video, I just got a 1250 and needed to learn how to do it. Saves a lot of money!
Use aluminum foil under the filter to redirect the oil.

Nice video. On the crash plate, the metal washers go inside the plate (between the engine and plate) on my brand new GSA!

Great video. Just needs a final item on resetting the service reminder, which cannot be done from the on board systems.

:)))) I laughed out loud! It's the curse of the oil changing gods :D
Love it, Great video.

What an honest video 😀
Hi, will appreciate if you could show how to change bmw f 850gs engine oil
great video
“We don’t all live in Romania !” 😂

Do you change your engine oil by the year or mileage ridden? Why BMW wants you to change it every year even if you don’t ride 6,000 miles per year?

Hey.. what are the decals on the fuel tank?
They are from the 3 years doing the Transylvania GS Challenge. Videos of last year's one stat here: ruclips.net/video/TroNInE62lY/видео.html
Yes.. I thought they might have been something like that.@@LongWayHome
Took mine until the stealer for a service, they’ve over filled the oil 🤦🏻♂️ anyone have a quick way for a removing some oil?
Try removing drain plug first, then open filler cap. 👍
So let's open this Pandora's box... What oil do you put in your bike?

Would BMW void their warranty if we change the engine oil on a new bike that's under warranty?!?
As long as there is no engine damage from improper oil change/usage, they will not have a problem.
That engine oil was spillage was caused by the oil being too warm lol..... Flows way too quickly then!
Instead of a rag under the oil filter, use some aluminum foil and drape it over the pipe
Am I the only one that use locking pliers to unscrew the oil filter
