Awesome video and thanks for posting it. As a 2021 1250GS owner and being sick and tired of the poor and expensive BMW service here in Germany I‘ll do all this stuff myself as soon as the warranty period is over. Iwill keep on coming back to your channel for more informative and great content. Keep itup and ride safe!
Mine reached 600 mi and I also think 400 bucks is too much. The user manual says we should only do oil change by 600 miles but after watching this video with that dark oil coming out and some metal debris I will definetly do the same you did and also by myself. This is a duper bike and taking good care of it is crucial. Thank you so much for the video. Very well done! Good rides!
I know I'm late to the game on this video, but what a great little tutorial! Thorough yet concise, you covered it all. I just hit 600 miles on my '23 GSA, and like you, I will make a short video to memorialize the service. I don't need BMW balking should I have a warranty claim. The initial 600 mile oil change, final drive oil change/service is now pushing $500.00 at my dealership. I prefer doing my own work and taking the time to make certain it's done right. Just a shame that BMW will not provide for sale their service manuals to their customers. I have to wonder if this is in reaction to the US ruling that BMW & Harley can no longer void warranties if standard service is not conducted by authorized dealerships. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to produce and post this ...cheers!!!
Excellent video very well explained without rabbiting on about stuff that is nothing to do with the task in hand well done 👍 Great Tutorial which has given me the confidence to do my 600mile service rather than pay the Dealer £300 and they said it’s not necessary to replace the drive oil ??? When I said according to the book it should be replaced they said well that’s up to you 😫 in other words they don’t do it and your video clearly shows it’s important and needs to be done as the oil was Black 😉
Missing: - application of thread locker on the cantilever bolt - replacement of crush washer on FD oil fill plug bolt - cleaning and re-application of final drive boot sealant grease on mating surfaces - replacement of crush washer on engine oil drain plug bolt BMW also recommends replacement of the FD oil drain plug O-ring but as this bike is relatively new and if you didn't observe damage to the O-ring, you can clean and re-use. If you're anal enough to grease cardan shaft rear splines at 600 miles, why didn't you pull the shaft and grease the front splines as well? They can seize -- which isn't as much of an issue for riding as it is when it comes time to replace the shaft. There was a stop-sale/safety recall on R1250GS bikes last year that requires dealers conduct a shaft test and FD housing drain-hole/vent install that you can't do at home. If you haven't had this performed, it takes about an hour. If your bike fails they'll replace your shaft. They'd be required to do the test and drain-hole/vent install if it hasn't been done yet and your bike was both in warranty and under 30K miles. Also also, I'm assuming you're in the US and therefore are protected by the Magnusn-Moss Warranty Act. It's on the mfg to prove something you did wrong would void a warranty, so this video -- while informative to your viewers -- isn't required. Harley Davidson was in the news last Oct ('22) over this and lost their claims to void customer warranties over it, specifically in regards to regular maintenance such as this.
Really nice torque wrench. Haven't seen one of those. Nice video. The rear end maintenance of these bikes can be a little intimidating but you made it look easy. Thanks.
Run the bike until warm so the oil drains more efficiently. You could drain the sump whilst changing the final drive oil. Reinstalling bolts with old thread locker is a no-no. Threadlocker is anaerobic meaning it cures in the absence of air. It has cured and sealed already so brush it off and apply a couple of drops to the start of the thread.

Thank you. Excellent Video. I'm just at the point of getting a 2nd hand R1250GS and plan to do the services myself as I do with my current Yamaha XJR1300.
Hey Jayelwin! I changed the final drive and engine oil in my 2022 R1250 GSA, as per your awesome video! Worked like a charm! No problems at all, and reviewed your video several times to get it right. You made this easy for me to change out the final drive and engine oil. It was the new 600 mile service that the dealer wanted $600! They also refused to reset the reminder display after doing it myself, so I just took an adventurous ride to a BMW dealer in another town and had an awesome time on a springtime Saturday. Now thanks to your video, I have the knowledge and tools to do this oil changing service every time. Will do! Thanks!
Saving to buy one, so every little helps and this is truly an awesome video lesson that I will keep it saved, well done and thank you for sharing it!! 👍👍
I think the best part of any video is the comment section. All the brainpower used to correct every minute of the video. Seriously now. I do all my own maintenance. I have for years. I use oil that is rated for the application and usually not the bike brand. I like amsoil so I use it in everything. Do some research. Most oil filters are made by one or two manufacturers so as long as there is a cross reference I'll get whatever fits. I try for K&N because of the nut on the end of the filter. As far as the cost vs doing it yourself, I take some pride in knowing how to do things myself and am not afraid of getting my hands dirty. There's a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself. Cost is irrelevant. I can afford it but would rather do it myself. Cars, trucks, moto, lawnmower. Whatever.
Good vid, thanks for that. You don’t mention lubing the splines at the gearbox end of the drive shaft tho. You would need to remove the shaft for that.
@@jayelwin that makes sense. But it seems like that end would be just as capable of rust. I really enjoyed your video. I like to do my own maintenance and I’m researching before I get a GS next year. I keep hearing you can’t trust the spline lube from the factory.

It might not be the cleanest thing to do given how the oil filter is positioned, but shouldn't you prime it before putting it in order to make sure that the engine never runs dry or is that not really a factor/concern?
When you start the engine it pumps oil through, and fills the filter. That’s why you need to fill with oil and start the engine and then top off. Car or motorcycle, every filter I’ve ever removed has been full.
I thought the 1250 GS requires the new BMW G3 hypoid oil. G3 costs $51 per half a quart bottle. Very expensive. I wonder what the difference is? I would rather use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 oil in there but don't know if it will cause any issues.
Good video. Just a small point, I might have used a genuine BMW oil filter to help with any possible future engine warranty discussions and not giving the manufacturer an out.
@@jayelwin You're lucky to have this protection. I'm in UK where we don't have this luxury. You obviously have a better government that looks after people. Thanks for the excellent video.
I have a personal dislike of K&N filters after I had one leak from the spot welds for the nut, I would use MANN filters as they make the oem filters for BMW. Other than that, great and informative video. I don't own a GS but one might be my next bike, a friend has a 2016 model and is not easy to keep up with on twisty/bumpy roads, I must get a ride on one.
Thank you 100 times over for making this video - it is awesome! I'm getting ready for the 600 mile maintenance on my 2022 GSA so this is super helpful. One question though: I know the final drive lube is highly recommended by the owner community, but is it part of the manufacturer's scheduled "break-in" service? The owner's manual is vague about what specifically is part of the "break-in service." I am definitely going to check the final drive lube, but not sure if it needs to be done in the 300 to 750 mile interval which is when the "break-in" service is required. Thanks!
Changing the final drive lube is definitely part of the 600 mile service. And when you remove the final drive lube you can see that it really does need to be changed.
I would also add that the spec for the final drive fluid is 70W80 and NOT 75W90. I'm sure the Rotella T6 is controversial to many, but I am mostly okay with it. The main reason that diesel oil is not also gasoline rated is because of the Zinc and Phosphorus, which is bad for catalytic converters. So if your engine burns any oil at all, you are over a longer period of time burning up your cat...unless you burn tons of oil, which means it'll be much quicker
The final drive oil that’s been recommended by BMW since 1970 is 75W 90. The BMW branded oil is that rating. Also diesel engines have catalytic converters just the same as gasoline engines. www.bobsbmw.com/store/product/bmw-synthetic-final-drive-oil-75w-90-one-quart
@@jayelwin it's right there in the owners manual. The 1250's take 70W80. I doubt the 75W90 would cause much harm if any though. As for diesel engines, their catalytic converters and emissions equipment is completely different to those of gasoline engines. Both of these are facts you can verify yourself!
@@DearMajesty BMW didn’t change the rear drive from the liquid cooled 1200 when they went up to the 1250. It’s the identical part. I would love to see a specific reference by BMW to the final drive oil because the product that they sell has been the same and the rear drive itself is the same. I looked and cannot find a BMW branded rear drive oil in the specifications that you state.
@@jayelwin I don't know if BMW changed the final drive, but as you say likely not. I do know that BMW officially recommends 70W80 now though. Have you tried opening your owners manual? It is there. The official oil is a BMW G3 70W80, GL-5
I used a hex and 40 and chewed up the bolt a bit. I know lazy. Anyway I think at 12k I will replace the bolt as now it's 1200 miles. Thanks for the Info
I heard with the 1250s they don't allow you to do any engine work where you have to remove the cylinder heads ie; checking valve clearance. Is this true?
You have to do all that at only 600 miles? And they want $450 to do it? Dang! I've got one on order and have a trip from Kansas City to LA planned shortly after getting it. So, I won't even make it to Denver before it's due for that. I don't have your skills, so will need to take it to dealer in Denver apparently. Is it possible to make an appointment with these dealers and get it done, in and out, in 1-2 hours? This throws a wrench in my trip planning.
I got the same oil and filter on my 2022 S1000xr. Oil on walmart and cyclegear on the KN filter 😂 I noticed even the watch. I have the black seal ceramic
If you’re in the US you need some kind of proof. A video is overkill. I was told you can save itemized receipts showing the purchase of what you needed, like oil and a filter, etc.
Hi Sir Don't know if this was asked, but did you not have to get BMW / service shop to reset the computer for you and was that in itself not a costly exercise? VERY INFORMATIVE, THANKS MATE..
Thanks for this step by step instruction. It looks like you have a Corbin saddle. How do you like it on this bike? I have put Corbins on all my bikes but was not happy with the FTR saddle.
So I replaced the stock with a Sargent and after 400 miles really didn’t like it and thought it was no better. So I got this Corbin and feel it is much better. Also leather. All around better seat. Seats are funny gotta try a bunch. My 2007 has a saddlemen. It’s not 100% perfect either.
You should change dealerships. My 600 mile service was done yesterday at San Diego BMW for less than $300 and I was on my way in less than 1 1/2 hours.
Great video, just in time as I service my 1250GSA, just wanted to know what brand and model is your torque wrench? Care to send a url link--thanks for sharing
Touratech barback risers. But this is one thing I regret not buying the eBay Chinese cheap equivalent because at the end of the day they’re just a billeted piece of aluminum
@@jayelwin I ended up (after much research) buying the Touratech risers too. Did you have to reroute the cables due to being too tight after the install? Thanks!!
@@jayelwin to be fair to manufacturers, they shouldn’t have to pay the cost of an engine rebuild if one decides to use a cheap filter just as an example. Once you’re outside the warranty period you can do as you please.
I checked the rear splines on my 3yr old GS. The shaft was seized on, couldn't shift it. Took it to my BMW dealer workshop today to see if they could remove it... They cant! Quoted £2600 for new shaft and bevel drive unit replacement, so keep those splines greased!!
@@jayelwin Lol, no. It was solid, I tried everything possible. It gets to the point where using more and more force may cause damage to the cast swing arm. BMW have give me a 'good willl' warranty claim, so, only got £400 labour charges to pay.
@@jayelwin Hi Spoke to the tech today on how he tried to free the shaft. He said after taking off the bevel drive and the shaft out of the engine. They heated it up as much as they dare, then put a slide hammer on the shaft, with no effect.
Excellent video. Thorough and efficient clip selection so it's not an hour long video haha. Just wondering, do they recommend adding threadlocker to any of those bolts?
Are you sure you won't lose warranty without a service stamp? I woul'd like to do the same like you, but I affraid. Here is the same prize, I also think, this is horrible. What do you think, this oil change processes are the all, what they do at a 1000km service. - I exactly know, the drive shaft checking is not the part of the official service!
Great video Ask you if we need reset anything on bike ?? Another question out this topic Just got gs 1250 adv rally what is best way to ride first 1000km?? Make engine run smooth latter.
Great video, thx but disagree with not priming oil filter. Only takes another minute & is obviously better to have good pressure/volume in oil galleries on start up again since they mostly empty from draining.
2 questions : what is the source for all the various torque specs? And I'm hoping that turning off the service interval warning is in the rider menus somewhere?
I found lots of online references from various service manuals about torques. And locked down computers are a huge source of revenue for the entire automotive industry.
You done a good job but better to know how much engine oil to put in 1st. The only problem with this is a dealer will use their computer system to input release code for your engine to enable it to go higher revs and faster. Also you will void your warranty doing it yourself! On a 12000 mile, major service the valves need checking and adjustment.
This is a 600 mile first service. We all have the little plug that opens up the higher performance that you can attach once you do the 600 mile service. Also in the US you do not void your warranty by doing your own service. Maybe in your country you do.
Same in Australia, doesn't have to be a BMW mechanic, it can be 3rd party, but needs to be a qualified mechanic or your warranty is done. Also, did you really torque a single wheel bolt up without the other bolts in?
Just a little tip/heads-up concerning the warranty. I am German and we have a really nice bulletin board over here, where people can post their experiences. Let me tell you: there are some posts on here where BMW would partly deny warranty (either at all or after a specific amount of time) in case, not every service has been done at the BMW dealership. I am not saying that this might happen in your case but you might wanna re-check with BMW North America (if doing and filming the service yourself is sufficient enough)
In the US we have the Magnuson-Moss warranty act. That protects us and very specifically states we can keep the warranty even if we do our own or third party service. Companies have tried to weasel their way out and have been punished by the FTC. Now the issue that does void warranty’s are things that modify the normal operation like if you added a supercharger to the bike and then something blew.
EU-law also allows you to do your service or have a third party do it without the warranty being effected. The service has to documented though, with pictures, receipts or a video :)
Never thought there were that many steps to service the final drive. No wonder they charge $400.The fluids and filter are probably over $100 bucks alone.😳
Appreciate this, but it won't get you out of voiding the warranty unless you're a BMW certified mc mechanic. At least, according to the dealer that's how they roll. I don't use dealer service for anything, due to years of shitty results with cars and bikes. Taking my chances and hoping the engineering and quality control won't put me in the rare situation where I might need to use the warranty. Figure I'll contact BMW directly if I do and hope they have mercy.
Hi, I can see where you are coming from regarding saving a few bucks, but I think skimping on a genuine oil filter is the wrong way to go, in the UK the dealers will knock you down on a trade in price if the bike hasn't had genuine parts fitted (receipts as proof) and will dispute a warranty claim, all for £5 or £6 difference. Also the first service is about betting any niggles or software updates done for free. I do my own servicing as well but after spending 19k on the bike what's a £20 filter.
@@brianhill3603 Luckily there are strict laws in the US that dictate a manufacturer cannot insist on OEM parts. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Passed in 1975.
The only thing they'll moan about, is that the TFT dash and ECU never had the updated software, having my F750gs serviced on its 600 mile service in a couple of weeks, just so I can get the software update, as new bikes sold don't have the updated software version to this day, only from when the design was first released. So getting this done by the dealership, and will then from that point, will be doing all my own servicing, always serviced my bikes, but for the 1st I need the dealership to give me the updated software, which is a right bugger, have a gs911 to the clear and reset service times etc.

Thank you for the step by step instruction. Well done!👍🏾 Did you use the entire gallon jug? Also, did you get to cancel the service warning light?
Sorry, just saw the maintenance light fix on previous comment.
Excellent detailed video!
@@DearMajesty You're right, just looked it up in the manual too. Not sure why they changed it on the 1250 but it's now 70W-80
What if you don't remove rear wheel and just change rear end oil?
You can work on my GS anytime ! 👍, any chance you live in Tennessee ?! I think you are in New Hampshire
I did mine on my 2023 and that final drive oil was terrible looking I plan to do this every 1000 miles or more my gosh
Nice video. Appreciated
Very good video ..question for you is doing your maintenance will affect your warranty in case of a claim?
Not in the US. Europe maybe.
I got the same oil and filter on my 2022 S1000xr. Oil on walmart and cyclegear on the KN filter 😂
I noticed even the watch. I have the black seal ceramic
Is that a Corbin saddle? If so how do you like it and did it raise your seat height. Thabks
Great video.. question for you. If I was to do the maintenance myself. do i need to video record it too for warranty purposes?
If you’re in the US you need some kind of proof. A video is overkill. I was told you can save itemized receipts showing the purchase of what you needed, like oil and a filter, etc.
You just have to take notes, you don't even need receipts. Just write dates and what service you did. But the more you have the better.
Hi Sir
Don't know if this was asked, but did you not have to get BMW / service shop to reset the computer for you and was that in itself not a costly exercise? VERY INFORMATIVE, THANKS MATE..
ObdLink XL and the MotoScan Android app you can reset it yourself.
Good video, lots of info :)
Awesome! How do you turn off the service warning after you completed maintenance? Do you use some kind computer plug to tell that service was done?
OBDLink XL and the MotoScan Android app
You should change dealerships. My 600 mile service was done yesterday at San Diego BMW for less than $300 and I was on my way in less than 1 1/2 hours.
Geography plays a huge role here.
@@jayelwin , San Diego is one of most expensive places to live in the US. I would contribute the price difference to greed.
Not sure if someone mentioned to use loctite 243 on the paralever bolt? Also did you grease the boot for the spline before reinstalling?
Is a GS 911 intresting or do you suggest other monitoring device?
Great video, just in time as I service my 1250GSA, just wanted to know what brand and model is your torque wrench? Care to send a url link--thanks for sharing
Great, concise video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Nice helpful video. Noticed you have handlebar risers. Which ones did you install? Did you have to reroute the cables outside the fork legs? Thanks!!
Touratech barback risers. But this is one thing I regret not buying the eBay Chinese cheap equivalent because at the end of the day they’re just a billeted piece of aluminum
2 minute install no mods needed
@@jayelwin I ended up (after much research) buying the Touratech risers too. Did you have to reroute the cables due to being too tight after the install? Thanks!!
@@Gorilla52282 no. I didn’t have to change anything. Really easy install.
Don't you loose your guaranty when you don't do your first service operation with your BMW dealer?
Fancy torque wrench lol. Thank you for the video!
Didn't know that you can perform service by yourself and warranty still remain valid. Greetings from 🇨🇭
Could be an issue in Switzerland. But in the US it is not.
Also using non-genuine parts (oil filter) is a big no-no for maintaining warranty in Australia 🇦🇺
@@donr62 that’s a shame. Really gives the brand a monopoly to charge a lot of money for parts if you’re forced to use them.
@@jayelwin to be fair to manufacturers, they shouldn’t have to pay the cost of an engine rebuild if one decides to use a cheap filter just as an example. Once you’re outside the warranty period you can do as you please.
What brand/model is that torque wrench and where did you get it? Thanks
Very good job 👏
Perfect man, i liked....
I don't understand why the rear wheel and brake caliper had to come off
I checked the rear splines on my 3yr old GS. The shaft was seized on, couldn't shift it. Took it to my BMW dealer workshop today to see if they could remove it... They cant! Quoted £2600 for new shaft and bevel drive unit replacement, so keep those splines greased!!
A good whack with a dead blow mallet didn't do the trick?
@@jayelwin Lol, no. It was solid, I tried everything possible. It gets to the point where using more and more force may cause damage to the cast swing arm. BMW have give me a 'good willl' warranty claim, so, only got £400 labour charges to pay.
@@jayelwin Hi Spoke to the tech today on how he tried to free the shaft. He said after taking off the bevel drive and the shaft out of the engine. They heated it up as much as they dare, then put a slide hammer on the shaft, with no effect.
Just a nice trick... When removing the oil filter, try using aluminum foil vs. a towel. Easy and a bit cleaner ;)
Excellent video. Thorough and efficient clip selection so it's not an hour long video haha. Just wondering, do they recommend adding threadlocker to any of those bolts?
I don’t think so. Just proper torque.
@@jayelwin one more question, did you replace any gaskets or crush washers? Or did you reuse them? Just wondering.
@@DearMajesty That's wrong, you need loctite on them and technically they are one use only anyway
Warranty laws do not require dealer service.
Great video
Ask you if we need reset anything on bike ??
Another question out this topic
Just got gs 1250 adv rally what is best way to ride first 1000km??
Make engine run smooth latter.
@@pedrocorreia7320 I used an OBDLink XL and the Motoscan Android app to reset the service light.

@Really? Well! this depends on your location. In the US this would not be true. I’m not sure about the rest of the world. Where are you located?
You don’t mention how you clear the dashboard notification, or did your dealer do that
OBDLink XL and the Android MotoScan app
Great video, thx but disagree with not priming oil filter. Only takes another minute & is obviously better to have good pressure/volume in oil galleries on start up again since they mostly empty from draining.
No, it's a horizontal filter!
2 questions : what is the source for all the various torque specs? And I'm hoping that turning off the service interval warning is in the rider menus somewhere?
I found lots of online references from various service manuals about torques. And locked down computers are a huge source of revenue for the entire automotive industry.
The first service is free at the BMW dealer in my country. You only get to pay for the oil and filter. This is strange.
That’s a nice perk!
Nice video. Kinda surprised you used diesel truck oil in it though.
I know, right. seems odd. But it's a common choice in the forums and it has all the correct certifications.
@@jayelwin Please explain what this little plug is...?
K&N is a very respected filter company and is on par or even better than OEM.
@@jayelwin Not in the eyes of the manufacture, especially when it comes to a claim. Your choice.
@@brianhill3603 Luckily there are strict laws in the US that dictate a manufacturer cannot insist on OEM parts. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Passed in 1975.
Great job
Great video
Does the spline have to be re-mollied after each oil change or is this only done at specified service intervals?
I believe greasing the spline has its own schedule and it is certainly not every oil change. I think it’s just early because of break in
I like your Vespa
The only thing they'll moan about, is that the TFT dash and ECU never had the updated software, having my F750gs serviced on its 600 mile service in a couple of weeks, just so I can get the software update, as new bikes sold don't have the updated software version to this day, only from when the design was first released. So getting this done by the dealership, and will then from that point, will be doing all my own servicing, always serviced my bikes, but for the 1st I need the dealership to give me the updated software, which is a right bugger, have a gs911 to the clear and reset service times etc.
