I’m almost 50 now but my mom’s record and cassette collection was my start and I love her for it. Sgt Peppers-The Beatles Heartbeat City-The Cars Brothers in Arms-Dire Straits The Best of the Doors Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits
Physical Graffiti. That record has a bit of EVERYTHING. No matter what your tastes, that album will give you the impetus to seek out other music that gives you a similar vibe. For me, it's bound to awaken something in the person, a drive to hear more music that gives them that same feeling.
I think I'd recommend the first album I got... Michael Jackson's Thriller... you get 7 hit singles, Michael at the peak of his ability, one of the GOAT producers in Quincy Jones, the session musicians are Toto playing the music, Vincent Price, Paul McCartney on one song and an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo on another... plus he inspired so many other albums & artists from Prince, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd and the songs have been sampled into hits for Rihanna, Snoop, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas & Kanye = there's a reason it spent a record 37 weeks in a row at #1
Boston’s debut. It’s just awesomeness from start to finish, and a great introduction to guitar driven music. Another choice for me would be Triumph Never Surrender. It’s got a good mix of hard rock and one mellower song. Then there’s always Kiss Alive.
I agree - I grew up and love 80's music & love metal but 60's music is the best in terms of timeless songwriting and musicianship - Motown, Phil Specter's Wall of Sound, The Wrecking Crew had session musicians who played 24/7, stayed out of the spotlight & distractions of tours & they were all professionals at their top of their craft.
Van Halen's debut. Not my favorite album or band off all time, but VH more than anyone made me a music junkie. As a kid listening to Eddie play, and Dave was such a charismatic front man.
On A Musical Note, I'd Say For New Comers To Pink Floyd, Jump Straight In And Pick Up The Album (Animals). Can't Go Wrong And A Beautiful Introduction To The Floyd.
I’m a big Mellencamp fan but trying to put that aside.. I do feel Scarecrow is a good starting point. It’s seems like. Good bridge/jumping point into a couple directions… R.O.C.K covers Motown and a listener might be like wow I want to learn about all the other artists mentioned in the song. There is also a pop feel to the songs, a rock feel to others, and the song writing is just so so good. It’s an album that I feel a majority of people can find something they like and can launch from
I’m a little confused about the concept of a new music fan. People don’t just wake up one morning and suddenly start listening to music. “Alien visits earth and has never heard music before” actually makes more sense 😄
"New record collector" works better for me, and I can relate to it at this very moment, because my daughter just got her first turntable. She's been a music fan for many years, just not a collector of physical media. I'll probably give her a copy of 'Rubber Soul' or 'Revolver' for Christmas.
It is just a hypothetical question dude. When I was buying my first CDs with my pocket money as we called it in the 80s, I took advise from my older brother and a good friend. My first CD was Even Worse by Weird Al because of the song fat. I loved the music video. I am Australian and my first proper CD not parody was Big Bad Noise by Choir Boys. They are an Aussie Pub Rock Band. The song Run to Paradise is an 80s classic in Australia. I like these type of hypothetical games. Makes you think. I would not just go straight for recommending albums like Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace, Reign in Blood and Vulgar Display of Power. They are all masterpieces but not for newbies to music.
@@martinwhite3559 All young people are not the same, and in my experience, it’s rare to encounter someone of any age who dislikes/dismisses The Beatles. They tend to be really immature, closed-minded fans of shitty modern heavy music. She’s 26 and has good taste in music. I’m certain she’s heard Beatles songs but probably hasn’t listened to an entire album.
Nice one Brendan, BiB, great album! Edit: the first exposure to music, was listening to my uncle playing Deep Purple “Machine Head”. I thought “oh I like THIS!” That started me on y path of all things heavy
It depends on what brought to start investing in buying music, I already knew what I like when I started listening to music. Becoming a music fan/collector is a moment of discovery for that person they need to follow where their heart/ears take them.
I think some type of compilation would be a good place to start. I like Anthony’s idea of starting with soul, so maybe the compilation Pure Funk would be good. Another option is soundtracks, so maybe the Forrest Gump soundtrack.
I think for me having also worked a long time in a Record Store I used to get the "what's good now" or "what would you recommend" and I have to find out where their head is. I got to know someone they know, I always make the person tell me an artist they like to get an idea. I mean because I would start saying Aerosmith Pump or Extreme 3 sides and someone is not going to want that right off the bat. I think a best of someone is a good way. I used to tell people who had no clue what they wanted but wanted new stuff, I sell them a NOW compilation because back then it had a variety of what was new, or even they tended to have Billboard comps from different years, its so hard to recommend or start someone with something that is subjective to everyone in certain ways.
I was thinking Hendrix, Ultimate Experience. Made a big impression on me. Or Are you Experienced? So many possibilities. I see Anthony's angle on simplicity. The Animals made an impression on me when I was young
Now I agree and disagree. The album was by far a great one. Animals gets you into the more sounding. My dad got The Wall and said he was not sure how to take it at first. HUGE PF fan. Dark side is his fav.
This reminds me of the Virgin Megastore in Times Square ( before streaming or RUclips) and I would flip through the CD’s displays and pull out five -seven and take them over to the listening station to hear a 30 second clip of each song. It turned me on to many artists and albums.
I'd like to recommend something new and fresh that still harks back to the day of yore. So, i'd recommend a Black Pumas album. They take a fresh approach to old-school soul and rock. I'm listening to the new live album now, and I think that album would be a good starting point. The production makes you feel like you're in the front row.
I think it would be good to start with a sampler or compilation that covers a few artists or genres and would allow the newbie to listen and give them various paths to follow. But if I had to recommend one album for rock, I would recommend either The Fleshtones - Hexbreaker or their later album Do You Swing? Raucous, catchy and formative. Modern with a nod to the past that would be a natural to start with.
If they’re young: Ac/dc back in black, Guns and roses appetite for destruction edit* I posted this a millisecond before Brenden said it, and the second choice happens to be his fav album! For the young at heart!! You are still pretty young tho bren
Hard to believe anyone not having exposure to music. Most of us, our first exposure to music was what our parents listened to. The music of my childhood was the Beatles and Motown artists. My kids had no choice but to listen to Metallica and Alice in Chains, among many other classic rock bands. Lol.
Wow that's a tough one. I watched a few of these 'Teens React to ....' yesterday and they have no clue about music from the 70s/80s/90s. They were laughing/making fun of what were great bands and great songs. Teens have become the 'boiled rice' of foods.
I'd likely go with a various artists compilation like Phat Trax Volume 6 by Rhino. Perhaps a Time Life Body and Soul compilation for some ballads. Hip-o's Funk Box fits the bill as well. For a greatest hits, one could go with with Al Green, Manhattans, Temptations, Whispers, Dells, Emotions, JB's, or Earth, Wind, and Fire. For the 90's scene, rap/swingbeat record I'd go with Prince Markie Dee and the Soul Convention with Free from 1992. Mary J. Blige's "What the 411" would be a solid second album. For earlier rap, I'd recommend Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud's "Girls, I got 'em locked."
Like you both started, I would go with 'what are you into?,' and then maybe go for a deluxe set or just a nice and comprehensive best-of or something. For a Led Zeppelin I would go with II. Lots of folks are saying Beatles and I would probably go with one of the albums like Rubber Soul. I would maybe go for something like Pink Moon by Nick Drake or maybe Elton John
Depends on what kind of Rock you like of course. Me myself if i was young and start again i should go with Judas Priest "Sad Wings Of Destiny"(metal),Rory Gallagher "Photo - Finish"(blues rock),AC/DC" Flick Of The Switch"(hardrock),Diving For Pearls "same"(melodic rock),Jethro Tull "Stormwatch"(progressiverock),Fates Warning "No Exit"(progressive metal),Little River Band "Time Exposure"(aor),A Flock Of Seagulls "same"(new wave),Exciter "Heavy Metal Maniac"(trash)....
I with Anthony, Yes start from the beginning. Zeppelin you must start there. Pink Floyd too. But depends on their vibe. Def Leppard as well On through the night was Awesome. Listen as the grow bands change as they reinvent their sounds. Most importantly what are they into. I personally loved my music appreciation teacher. She when through the very first of music then grew to modern music. There I found 1920's fox trots was fun. Then big bands as well. Tho I will always go to metal. But depends on my mood.
But Anthony is saying go back further than Led Zeppelin to the 1950’s and early 60’s and to start with non-rock. Very different vibe than say Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd.
I would tell them that this was music is what got me interested: The Beatles albums and branch into CSN, CSNY, Neil Young, Phil Collins, Linda Ronstadt. Basic Rock and Roll and let them branch out.
My grandson is in his early 20s. And he listens to Jason Isbell with me a lot. And he’s really liking it. I think Tom Petty would be a safe recommendation for most people. As a start. I don’t know how you could go wrong there.
Green Day - Dookie The Offspring - Smash Nirvana - NeverMind KoRn - Follow The Leader Guns N’ Roses - Appetite For Destruction All these albums made a big impression on me as a kid and in my teens and shaped all of my music tastes.

Off the top of my head, I would include in that ten in no particular order: Simon and Garfunkel, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and a classical work by either Beethoven or Mozart.
I would give them a Spotify or Apple or Amazon Music playlist with Motown, Funk, Soul & Blues & (to some extent Jazz) and then slowly introduce them to the rock genre-if they like it and want to delve into it then expand. Also stream greatest hits or “live” for artists always great

I know it's a lot later album but I would probably choose 3 doors down the better life. Acdc back in black album also. Hells bells is my favorite song of acdc.
A good start I think would be ... Heart - Magazine A.R.S. - Champagne Jam A.P.P. - Turn of a Friendly Card Then a step toward guitar Rock ... Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping Styx - Equinox But I do agree with Anthony about Motown's music so many great 60s andc70s acts .
Hi Brendon Have you checked out Bobbie Dazzle yet? Just came across her great new glam rock/metal singer I have just discovered very influenced by Sweet and Slade. Best album to introduce something pop I guess if it is a kid!
Anthony: Who’s buying Jerry Lee Lewis? I did the last time I was in Sound Exchange haha I’d recommend Please, Please Me by The Beatles. It’s rocking but still poppy

@@BrendonSnyder I would go for Jazz or The Game then. Both have a bit of everything and Jazz was 1 of the first albums I got myself and look where it got me! 😁I need to move soon, cuz my music collection is getting too big! 🤭
They should buy the first album I bought with my own money in Jan. 1981. "The Beatles 1967 - 1970" AKA "The Blue Album". A great way to start.
Start where everyone starts the Beatles! From there you can go forward or backwards. Thats what I did.
I’m almost 50 now but my mom’s record and cassette collection was my start and I love her for it.
Sgt Peppers-The Beatles
Heartbeat City-The Cars

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours. Nothing offensive or abrasive just great musicianship and melodies.

Exile on main street is what I would recommend. Has all styles to discover. Rock, blues, country.

Not familiar with Fugazi. Checked them out. That would put me off of music. Great video.
Tiny Tim - God Bless Tiny Tim perfect album for a newbie.
The first album I thought of was Script For A Jester's Tear then Anthony said Fugazi. I think an all encompassing act would be The Troggs.
Except that Anthony was referring to the post-hardcore band Fugazi and not the album by Marillion.
Buddy Holly record. I live in Texas and I think Charles Hardin Holly is the most underrated musician in Texas Lore .. what he did , dying at 21 . But , Exile On Main Street has it all .. Delta Blues to Country and Soul .. that swagger .. that Jagger
The Doors: Absolutely Live.
Brendon, thoughts on NIB? It’s my favorite track off of self titled but you said the only track you liked was Black Sabbath.
Boston first album 🤟
Hell Yeah! Hands down!
" KISS" ALIVE !!
😂😂😂😂😂 😂
1. The Beatles Rubber Soul 2. Paul Simon Graceland 3. Talking Heads Stop Making Sense concert
I would point them where to look on RUclips so they can listen before buying.

It’s all about what your into.. personality if you can call it that.
… But if I have to choose… Pet Sounds The Beach Boys.

Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
