      ShiningT1g3R MK had very stereotypical but popular archetypes that were popular in the 90’s and the appeal of the gore just took it from there, like ninjas, 4 armed dudes, monster with blades in their arms, evil fumachu sorcerer. That really comes across lately when they try to make new characters that are a lot of hot garbage, because nobody is really interested in a kind of design like, The Kollector

    The reason why developer names in old games were aliases (ie Ballboy, Q, JJJJJJ, etc) is because companies were afraid of employee poaching.
    For example: if you’re a developer that programmed this cool, new engine for Megaman 2, and another company knew your name, there was fear that they’d offer you money to also work for them for extra payment. This was before the whole “while you work for us, any code you write is our code” thing that you see today.
    Early developers are noted for finding work arounds to get credit for their hard work without being fired- whether it be an alias or some cheat code that flashes your name for a second (Atari Donkey Kong).
    Eventually, video game companies started to fix up their contracts with their employees so that they can get credit without fear of poaching.

    Capcom VS SNK.
    The first one.
    That game does things with sprites that I straight up haven't seen in another sprite based fighting game. The fucking shadows on the buildings on the Final Fight stage that scroll faster than the characters because of the perspective and the angle of the light is something else.

    Neo G worked in as the main fighting director of the VS series and he is now in SNK working on the current Samurai Shodown game.
    Shinkiro and Bengus who are the artists that you are praising for the art style of these games still work for a lot of different companies.
    The talent still there but is no longer together and the high executives from Capcom are the ones that decide what games they are going to make.

Bamco tested the waters with My Hero One's Justice last year and and Arcsys just released Kill La Kill, one series is currently very popular but the other was an anime from five years ago (they should have been actual fighting games instead of arena battle types). Could JoJo really be a guaranteed money-maker the likes of DBZ or Naruto?

      @WraxTV 5 лет назад +4

      @@DragonoftheDarknessFlame Most those characters you mentioned weren't planned to be in Marvel movies at the time, though, and that's all Disney cared about when it came to this game - they were just using it as a vehicle to promote their movies.
      Of all the characters they could have used to replace Wolverine as the cover character - Iron Man, Captain America, Spiderman, maybe even something off the wall like Gwenpool or Squirrel Girl - yet Captain Marvel was chosen. You can't tell me that wasn't due to Disney's marketing department.
      And yes, Capcom's side sucks just as bad as Disney's, and yes, Capcom could have made it a great game without the X-Men, but that's my point; because they couldn't get the X-Men, they chose to phone the game in.
      And why wouldn't they? "No X-Men" was the number one complaint from fans of the original game and it remains the biggest complaint to this day. They knew this game wasn't going to play to older players without them so, again, why bother?

    While ASB gameplay was pretty wack, I wouldnt disregard its presentation or how much love was put into that game. Pallete swaps and costumes that come from the alternate covers of the manga series, moves and poses that are ripped straight from the pages themselves, music that at times, make reference to the other songs (i.e. Kira's theme has a segment that sounds a lot like "Killer Queen", Esidisi's theme has a bit of "Back in Black" in it) and even specific gameplay mechanics have things related to the general story, like how vampires take gray damage from ripples and everyone from part 7 has stuff related to picking up corpse pieces. They even let a glitch related to taunting in the game because that shit was way too fitting for the game.
    But yea. Gameplay was wack.

    • @thebirthdayskeleton2927
      @thebirthdayskeleton2927 5 лет назад +12

      Idk why ASB gets so much flak. First of all, it's really unfair to compare it to games like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and other games with one attack button. Why would you say the gameplay is wack? It is pretty deep, mixes 3D with 2D in a really interesting way and had tight execution from what I can remember. The only reason I haven't bought a PS3 to play it is the stupid 30fps thing.

    • @Bigboss1115

      @@thebirthdayskeleton2927 I love ASB. Way more than I should. I think the issue comes with how the game handles certain things that are common in other games. Stylish dodge can be OS'd, making normal throws hard to utilize, jump arcs can be ducked under by loads of characters, making them whiff, and neutral is kinda bare-bones, with poking via normals being close to non-existince afaik.

    thanks for the video. this was spot on. especially about that jojo game. seeing this video is such a breath of fresh air. It feels good to see others who are fans of this type of imo art, and who notice all the intricacies within the references, animation, designs, sounds, that fire music etc. and to hear it broken down. this encapsulates what I've been holding in for years. it was nearly impossible to find people who shared this level of appreciation for this genre of gaming/animation prior to the internet let alone be able to have an in depth discussion on the technical aspects/history of how they're designed, and where the art styles come from. like how araki influenced some fighting game aesthetics even down to the wild color pallets and poses.
    that jojo game is so intense and true to the source material. theres so much you can do in that game. my "arcade rival" and I hold this in the same regard as mvc2. at one point we quit playing that to play jojo.
    that jojo game imo was light years ahead of its time and was so overlooked. even now its still one of the best fighting games.

    I'll be real: The main appeal of ASB and EoH for me is the ability to play characters from later Parts. I'm sure it won't happen anytime in the foreseeable future, but if they made a game in the style of (or building off of) Heritage for the Future that represented the larger JoJo... well, multiverse, at this point... My guy, your efforts, interest, and research are appreciated. That said, as much as these games draw people in with eye candy, I can never truly respect them on the same level as I do a fighting game made from the ground up. If they wanted to make a One Piece / Naruto game that weren't arena based choc full of references or special attacks, it would be a cinch. That said, there are certain moves that can never truly happen like Ginyu's body transfer attack. He's had it since the Mega Drive / Sega Genesis days, he's had it in Ultimate Battle 22/27 on PS1, and he now has it in DBFZ. No other game will have that ability so it is entirely unique.
    Games like Marvel Super Heroes I enjoy don't get me wrong. It was a brand new creation and reference and reverence shown towards the source material and in a lot of ways depends on what's given to the characters to fight with. Sabretooth's partner Birdie shooting her gun? That was new. Visual presentation is definitely key but like I said, I personally respect originality far more but that costs money.
    This is just a little tangent but I suspect games will be needing more meters, more status effects to freshen up the genre like it's going now. It use to be really primitive space control. Shoto fireball and dragon punch control particular space. Then they introduced air fireballs going downwards, then upwards, or then stationary etc. Same goes for anatomy and movements. How many times have you seen a normal that resembled a move from some other character from another game? It's all rather weird and amazing how creative fighting game devs need to be to make a game LOOK new. SFV has been fun and I enjoy it but my biggest pet peeve is standing roundhouse. Falke, Menat?, Cody, and a lot of characters have the same damn kick. Anywho, good stuff man.

While in Heritage you see characters doing unique poses that are still in line with their character, in FighterZ they are always referencing a panel from the manga. The same could be said of their abilities and how they're used. Heritage takes more liberties to make the game both cooler and more fun, while in FighterZ it's much more limited.

    I know ASB was not deep as a fightan, but honestly, I had a lot of fun with it with friends, felt like you could build up a solid one from there with a sequel, also, it absolutely had a shitload of love for the series even before the animation became this popular, you had characters strike poses and wear costumes from a specific page in the manga, it had the lines, references and the OST was pretty good, not to mention they had the audacity to let you use your own music during battle so that you could pop in the actual songs the stands or characters are named after. I really think that game and HFTF had a lot of love for the series and had a very good presentation too, now, I am not a fan of EoH, don't really like 3D fighters like that. (I also feel that somehow it looks visually worse than ASB).

    8:46 that was because during those days game companies were head hunting people to snatch them up for their own. I think it was the companies telling the employees to use tag names.

    Majin O. Got it wrong with JoJo ASB. To say the gameplay was wack itself is fine (Personally I liked it) but it's about as Faithful to the manga if not more than Capcom's JoJo game.

    Great video! I wonder what the next media property based fighting game will be? Granblue kind of fits the role since it’s a non fighting game property that’s getting a fully fleshed our fighting game

    Wolverine was literally shooting crazy ass metal scraping beams out of his claws IN THE INTRO OF X-MEN THE CARTOON. So I could see why they would have that effect in. Though I don't think it was meant to be a type of laser, he has had animated effects of that nature....adamantium probably has weird properties, considering it isn't real.

    As someone who used to collect Spiderman comics, I recognized that the development team ripped actual Mark Bagley art from the comics and used them as key frames on many of Spidey's attack animations, movement, neutral stance, and even win poses. Everything about Spidey's design aesthetics were based from Mark Bagley's run on the Spiderman comics. Just how these manga/game comparisons are made here with Gohan, the exact same was done with Spidey in the Capcom Marvel games. Wish I had the actual comic panels to show off but I guarantee you it was the case.

    If you want to view the full credits of games with people's real name, you should check out www.mobygames.com/game/arcade/jojos-bizarre-adventure/credits. And if you want to know some info on who did what you should check out this Japanese site w.atwiki.jp/game_staff/pages/666.html. They get their info from jp twitter from people who worked on the series. If they specify what the person did they will use a diamond (◆) with the name of the character they worked on. The tweets are at bottom.

    A lot of the points you bring up are great but just a quick side note, street fighter was influenced by jojo not the other way around. But I bet there was some prior mingling of ideas and concepts for character design.

    Consider me whack because I like All-Star Battle than the Capcom JoJo game. :P ASB is what I consider a "fan-service fighting game" as in a fighting game that focuses more on the source material, and characters over trying to be a more traditional competitive fighting game.

    Yo ASB and the storm series might not have great gameplay but the presentation IS DEFINITELY still there. Especially with ASB wtf? And the storm series has good online features a lot of fighting games should have and good single player content.

    Old video but even look at Melty Blood. it almost feels like Tsukihime cannon and that was for Doujin-cirlce

  • @gatorssbm
    @gatorssbm 3 года назад

    Seeing how well FighterZ and Smash Ultimate performed (even if Im not a huge fan of either) I feel its better for developers to focus on presentation over accessibility but the latter can still exist but Id preffer if they didnt push it as much as most new games.

    • @gatorssbm
      @gatorssbm 3 года назад

      @Kayden McCallum I mean I still mainly see people even months later who dont stick around for fighters talk first about how amazing the game looks and sometimes albeit rarely how accessible the gameplay is, its very rare for most people to talk in depth about gameplay or the changes. Theres already a genre that drives the majority of sales doing both especially accessibility being arena fighters typically anime games, its presentation on adapting the iconic moves/scenes and usually having not as engaging gameplay but it still sells regardless of quality outside the presentation. Those 2 are pretty solid indicators that presentation at least gets half of the job done for more sales if not more.

    • @gatorssbm
      @gatorssbm 3 года назад

      @Kayden McCallum I never said that, I said what sells the initial impression. Refined mechanics and nuanced character balance keep people around but it wont make a game necessarily sell.

    • @gatorssbm
      @gatorssbm 3 года назад

      @Kayden McCallum Its really down to what will motivate fighting games to sell cause devs dont want to develop at a loss. Im not of the opinion that this is how it should be more that, that is why some games sell well. I just wish devs werent so focused on only accessibility being the main factor on why they sell all Im saying Id hope theyd focus more on presentation if they want to maximize sales cause Id preffer games to be a tad more difficult than some modern ones.

    Yeah in order to play Young Joseph you gotta put it in dev mode or something right?

    • @Cunt143
      @Cunt143 5 лет назад +1

      @@popo237 You gotta enter a cheat code to play as 6 of the characters (young joseph, hol horse and boingo, new kakyoin, rubber soul, khan and shadow dio)
      In fightcade it's already enabled though

  • @Dieci-9
    @Dieci-9 3 года назад

    Completely agree that presentation has a huge impact on a game, especially from new IPs. Meeting (or exceeding) people's expectations about a game's look or (in case of famous IPs) which characters are present in the game will make or break the deal for a huge number of potential customers way before they get their hands on the game and learn more about its mechanics or sick stuff they can do.
    That's why, alongside the bad PR, MvC Infinite did so poorly. Game looked whack, the substitution of MCU characters to beloved mainstays was insulting and the story mode was cringy with characters repeating their names every 3 seconds like:
    "Yeah, Sir Arthur. I Thor, will deal with Ultron while you, Sir Arthur, go with Spencer to do stuff."
    Namco X Capcom handled a story mode with even more characters from different IPs much much better.

    Disappointing that it took DBFZ for people to realize most anime fighting games even the worst ones were drawing from the source material. They don't just put their hand in a hat and make up moves. Even visually for Dragon Ball, there was always stuff like Burst Limit that still look good today. Also the shade at ASB is odd

    • @TheAnimatedGamer
      @TheAnimatedGamer 5 лет назад +2

      That's exactly what I'm saying tbh. Burst limit did exact same thing
