Well, you answered my questions about attempting this project myself! I'll tackle almost anyt home project, but I never did anything pool related. This looks like it can very quickly turn into a costly mistake.

My pool is the same shape as yours. Size is 18x36. My question is how do I get the right fit of vinyl with the slope and depth accounted for? 4 feet down to 8 I believe. Any information or suggestion where to buy from is greatly appreciated.
I did mine by myself. I started backward and had to flip the entire thing. The liner must have weighed 400 lbs. I used pennies to hold the liner in the channel. Its going on 3 years now. It was worth the savings, but it was very hard to do by myself.
Pool liners are easier to handle if its a hot sunny day. What we did for us in our previous house is we installed the liner on a sunny day 80-90 degree weather. We put up the liner almost all the way but we left like a 6-12 inch gap that we didn’t finish. In that gap we put in a shop vac and like I said sunny day made the liner more flexible to work with. Once the bottom of the pool was to our liking we cut out the drain part and then we started adding water. When we reached halfway we finished installing the gap of the liner we hadn’t done. For a diy I think our liner turned out great.
When hanging the liner what is it that keeps the liner in place for not sliding down. Is it something that holds it in place . Cs I feel when filled with water in will fall down from the weight of the water

He will start digging some time in January. We’re going to have the bottom cover with Grout. Our daughter will have her child sometime in August or early September. He will be our first grandchild. We’re getting a tanning ledge in ours so we can play with him on it next summer. We’re excited about the pool but much more excited about our grandchild.
Haaaaaa, yes, a true test for couple lasting power! I remember breaking up w/a boy friend, b4 marriage, over wallpapering! Worse than replacing a pool liner - should be avoided at all cost. We have a constant project stream. I'm mainly the designer, he is the builder so dividing the project eases conflict, to some degree. Glad you will get your job done w/out stress - I HOPE! What a treat for your Grandbaby, what an exciting time! Am sure you have thought about the toddler proofing. Safety always first.

We didn't but the liner floated upwards when a big rain attempted to fill it up for us. We quickly put sand bags all over the liner - deep end - all corners - all over - to hold it in place until the deep end was full. You do need something to hold it in place for sure.
Did you follow directions on pool liner to install? Every one I've ever done/heard of tells you to start at deep end. You then stretch over top of pool and insert starting at corners of deep end, finishing at shallow.
It's hard to remember, but at the time we thought it would take some of the weight off the liner to start w/the shallow end since there was only two of us and we didn't want to just drop the liner into the deep end because it was not possible for me to hold the entire weight of the liner up.
The liner company will provide a list of all the measuring you need to do. For the top dimensions, we took a string and held across the top and marked on the string. Laid the string down and measured it. We verified by also using a tape measure across the pool - double checked. Depth of pool, we took a plumb bob weight and hooked on a long horizontal pole - could use stick, bamboo, anything super long and straight. Then measured plum bob string length. Process is a bit challenging. We double checked and triple checked. It turned out more perfect than we anticipated! Got lucky.
It would have been ok slowly for the exception that it rained way too much too fast and the ground table filled up the deep end with water and started rising up underneath the liner - floating it up! Might have worked if we would have anchored it with sand bags. We did this after the fact and it did work to keep the liner in place until we got it complete filled by mother nature plus 1 final load of water from a water truck. I would recommend that you get the water truck load first to anchor the liner and then let mother nature fill it up the rest of the way - anchoring the shallow end with a lot of sand bags, especially in the corners so the liner will stay exactly where it needs to be.

Our biggest error was letting it rain for days and the ground under the liner became saturated and water filled in UNDER the liner and pushed it up --- as well as on top of the liner (filling up the pool). So what happened was as the water receded back into the earth under the liner and caused the sand to sift around leaving channels. So we had to take a plunger and dive down into the deep end and try to resift the sand back into the right place. We also had to fill sand bags and try to push the floating liner back down and that worked! It worked in most places for the exception of the slope down into the deep end. It's not noticeable but not perfect. Good enough for us as the liner is working fine. Sooo, I presume it helps hold the liner in place when filling. I am thinking that sand bags might work as a substitute. but you would need a lot of them, especially in the shallow end corners near the walk down entry point. If you filled the entire pool using paid for hauled in water you would not have as much shifting. The weakest point are the corner tops as over time they seem to "stretch" and rip. Check w/the water hauler to see if "possibly" has the vacuum. :)

I somehow missed your question, sorry for the delay, we wore socks, kept the sand damp with sprayers and took sheetrock trowels and smoothed it out. It was lovely until we had the big rain and it floated the liner up causing all sorts of tunnels! The key was to keep it damp while working the sand.
OMG I feel your pain. I just emptied my pool to clean it...it sat last year unopened. I was away with the military most of the summer. Took me 3 days to empty it (same size as yours) with a small sump pump....cleaned it passing buckets of rotten dirty leaves to my son in small buckets....another bunch of hours scooping out the rest of the dirty water....and then water truck shows up to refill on day 3. Well, a small corner piece popped out and got bigger and bigger as the second truck filled my pool (it would be 5 truck loads ordered)....and the pressure pulled out my line completely off one corner. I have to empty my pool again....($370 in water wasted)....rent a pump again ($120) and hire a pool company to see if the liner can be repositioned and attempt another water fill. I am going to have them empty the pool, replace the old liner and refill. I don't want anything to do with it because if the liner pops again on refill....I don't want to be responsible. I cried so many times this week over this stupid pool.
Oh, ohhh, ohhhhhhh - terrible. It's quite a shock when it happens and when it goes, it seems to keep on going! Your experiences sounds just awful. I know you were sick. It sounds like the liner was for sure failing. We had 1 corner rip, then 2, then 3 over 4 years (after we purchased our house). We patched them and it held but it's an indicator that the liner is on its way out. Your clock was ticking. It's quite expensive to replace but hopefully you could see from our video how much work it is to do yourself. Do you have a pool cover on it for the winter or long periods when not in use ? Probably needed so all that debris doesn't get in and sit and erode the liner or someone to suck out the junk while you are gone. We still get worms and such with a winter cover but at least no leaves. I feel your pain! Turn the page and enjoy the pool for many years to come after it's back up and running. Hoping this will be a faded memory soon. So sorry it happened to you.
@@ForsythiaHill The trick - seems to be to fill the pool with about 2 feet of water, adjust liner, fill a bit more, final adjustment of liner and you should be good to go thereafter.
@@PhilVerryChannel We filled to about 4' and then had a torrential rain, we thought would be a good thing but floated the liner up I suppose because we did not use a vacc? it was a mess but we even got it to work in the end - thought it was over at the time!
Here I am again 2021. We couldn’t get a liner last year because of Covid shortages. This year, we can’t find a pool place to install new one until end of August. Half the liner is off and the pool deep end is full up with rain water. Estimate $9000 Canadian from pool place now to do it start to finish. No choice. That or fill it in which honestly I am considering as I won’t get to swim in it again this year. Now year 3.

If you get it filled in then you don't have to worry about it anymore -- hopefully -- and no more expense. Either that or sell the house! My neighbor filled his in and built a garage on top. May be some other use for the space?

We live right near you folks here in Earlysville, and my wife and I are about to embark on the very same project. How did you figure out the best way to get your sand squared away? Our pool liner is probably on it's last season, and I think we're looking at this job for spring 2021. Who installed your pool originally? Our pool came with the house, and I think our pool is the same construction.
Hey Bob! We just filled in the divots by moving the sand around. It doesn't have to be exact as the plastic will give a little and will conform to it. Your sand should be really nice if you get to the liner before it totally degrades like ours did. It will be packed down and fairly ready, just keep the rain directly off of it before you put in the new liner. Have your liner corners started ripping yet? We had a few years of patching corners before the whole liner was toast. Our pool came with the house too so we don't know who originally put it in or when. Are you all hiring or DIY?

We have three small holes in one corner way above the water line where the vinyl appears to have dried out, otherwise the three other corners are pliable and hole-free. The rest of the liner is still pliable and good.Our bottom is smooth under the vinyl. We’re totally going DIY, and I decided on the same website for the liner you used, even before watching your video today. I couldn’t believe someone so close to us posted the EXACT video we needed! I learned from the previous owner our pool was installed by Valley Pools. Yours looks similar enough that I’d venture they did yours as well. Our plan is to buy the vinyl in the fall (when it’s usually cheaper), and replace in the spring when we have steady temps over 75. We’re going to wait for a three-day rain-free forecast.
@@rmromanko Yes, that's so weird! My husband rigged up a good system when measuring for the new liner. Ours is 16' x 32 1/2' long then it's gets more technical when you get to the deep end vs shallow transition. I can email you our measurement paperwork. Of course yours will be slightly different but might be worth having to check your numbers if our pools were installed by the same company (probably was). Hi! I noticed that from some of your other videos you have or had chickens, my hen is making a weird beep like noise and I have no idea why, I thought it had something to do with pecking order but I couldn't find any info about it. I was wondering if you would have any idea why.
Hi Alex, it's really funny that u mention this. I've had chickens for I guess 7 years now and one of my recent 3 new hens started this beeping that I've never heard before! I figured out that it's because she is broody! This is when they sit on the nest and try to hatch out an egg. This chicken is 10 years old (a record maybe) and a pro at being broody. Is your chicken by chance trying to be in the nest box more than usual? I also noticed that sometimes birds do this too! It's nesting season and I presume they have a nest somewhere. A friend says it's sorta a warning to the other birds to not mess with them. I see it more as prepping for the hatching and something the mamma bird does to train the baby birds. This is a guess on my part as I've not had baby birds but seems like I've noticed them doing this beeping to the babies sometime in my life. I've not noticed beeping in any other situation.
@@ForsythiaHill My hen is only a couple months old and not old enough to lay eggs, also I don't have a rooster, she usually dose it when we let all the hens and ducks out in the garden, what I am worried about is if something got stuck in her throat, because we have a hen who likes to find small pieces of trash and give the trash to the other ones, I try to pick up the trash off the ground but she just keeps finding it. But thank you so much for telling me that, I'll keep an eye on her and see if she stops.
@@alexisnicole1576 How is your hen? Each bird can make its own unique sound. Hoping that is the case and nothing was stuck. When one of my hens has had something stuck, they would cough and I would tell them to drink some water and point at waterer -- they actually listen! Typically it dissolves and they hen doesn't actually choke but trash and stuff is another matter all together. If eating and stays down, I presume it's not a total blockage and probably will be ok. There is some sort of worm that can grow and clog the throat called a gapeworm. This would not be good, hopefully there is a wormer that can kill such a beast! Preventative worming is not a bad idea just in case.
I'm sorry I missed your question! YES, I know so much more now and it would be 50 times easier. NO problem! I would get 2 strong men to handle the deep end instead of me for certain.
I worked alone on my 17x34 pool. I used stakes and climbing rope along with clamps for holding vinyl tent tops secure to hold the liner in several spots after I had it unfolded all the way to soften in the sun. Kept it near the top as I installed along the top. It was a tough job for an old guy.

I've had my vinyl liner pool since 1986. Replaced the liners by myself three times. I simply used a good-sized shop vac after the liner was in and the stairs were sealed. Immediately sucked to form the liner to the walls and bottom. While that was in place, I put a knotted rope, anchored at the shallow end (that vinyl is slippery and I was wearing thick cotton socks), went in the deep end to put the drain ring on and cut the liner from the opening, then out to do the skimmer and finally the returns and light before filling with water. Took a couple days to fill the pool and I left the shop vac going until the water reached the end of the vac hose. Once it was to that level, the water evened it all out.

Purchased years ago and pool sizes vary greatly, so am sure more expensive now. I would recommend you compare prices with several companies before investing. It's a lot less expensive than hiring a pool installer.

I've ordered three liners. Each time it seemed like a different company. The order forms and measurement forms are all online. I'd suggest the thickest liner you can get. The difference in price will be mitigated by the length of time you'll use the liner. I think they're good for maybe 10-12 years depending on climate.

Foam board is better than sand and the pool liner is installed poorly leading to failure . pools can last up to 50 years when installed correctly. This one is not.
Our pool - sand and foam board has been in the ground since the 80's, it's easily 40 years and I don't understand how it could fail since it's not going anywhere. I do not see any degradation. The liner looks awesome and it's 3 years old, liners usually do not last more than 12 years. The other liner lasted 15+ and the current liner fits better than the old one ever did and didn't have holes patched or the corners ripped and bowing outward (the prior owners installed the original pool). We couldn't be happier with the outcome.
Which part is costing the $$ the liner or the install? I'm confused as the liner company usually doesn't do installs, pool companies do the install. I would get several bids.
Watch the video, it's a replacement of a liner, not a new install. We did not have to replace the stairway. It looks pretty straight forward to me! The key is to not overtighten the screws and to do it by hand. Good luck.
yeah, we didn't.The liner floated up when we had a HUGE rain while the pool was nearly empty we ended up putting sandbags (walmart bags filled with excess sand) in the shallow end corners, in deep end and around edges to keep liner from floating up. It seemed to work. We didn't use a vaccuum. It is recommended that u do.
@@josephgladish22 We decided to get the truck of water for the end - I wish we would have gotten a truck of water at the beginning! I think the liner floating up would have been avoided. Like u recommended, fill it up FAST, esp the deep end!

did you have to put a vacuum to make the liner stick to the wall no air gap ? my pool have air gaps all over not sure what to do with it

Can you explain the rain issue a little more? Was it because you let it fill too slowly?
I see from other comments this was due to not having it pinned while filling. Either vacuum or you guys used sand bags in a pinch

Looked like a Giant pool but with water in it I think it's the same size as my pool but my sides washed out and I have big rocks

The liner company will provide a list of all the measuring you need to do. For the top dimensions, we took a string and held across the top and marked on the string. Laid the string down and measured it. We verified by also using a tape measure across the pool - double checked. Depth of pool, we took a plumb bob weight and hooked on a long horizontal pole - could use stick, bamboo, anything super long and straight. Then measured plum bob string length. It is a bit challenging. We double checked and triple checked. It turned out more perfect than we anticipated! Got lucky.

I somehow missed your question, sorry for the delay, we wore socks, kept the sand damp with sprayers and took sheetrock trowels and smoothed it out. It was lovely until we had the big rain and it floated the liner up causing all sorts of tunnels! The key was to keep it damp while working the sand.
OMG I feel your pain. I just emptied my pool to clean it...it sat last year unopened. I was away with the military most of the summer. Took me 3 days to empty it (same size as yours) with a small sump pump....cleaned it passing buckets of rotten dirty leaves to my son in small buckets....another bunch of hours scooping out the rest of the dirty water....and then water truck shows up to refill on day 3. Well, a small corner piece popped out and got bigger and bigger as the second truck filled my pool (it would be 5 truck loads ordered)....and the pressure pulled out my line completely off one corner. I have to empty my pool again....($370 in water wasted)....rent a pump again ($120) and hire a pool company to see if the liner can be repositioned and attempt another water fill. I am going to have them empty the pool, replace the old liner and refill. I don't want anything to do with it because if the liner pops again on refill....I don't want to be responsible. I cried so many times this week over this stupid pool.
Oh, ohhh, ohhhhhhh - terrible. It's quite a shock when it happens and when it goes, it seems to keep on going! Your experiences sounds just awful. I know you were sick. It sounds like the liner was for sure failing. We had 1 corner rip, then 2, then 3 over 4 years (after we purchased our house). We patched them and it held but it's an indicator that the liner is on its way out. Your clock was ticking. It's quite expensive to replace but hopefully you could see from our video how much work it is to do yourself. Do you have a pool cover on it for the winter or long periods when not in use ? Probably needed so all that debris doesn't get in and sit and erode the liner or someone to suck out the junk while you are gone. We still get worms and such with a winter cover but at least no leaves. I feel your pain! Turn the page and enjoy the pool for many years to come after it's back up and running. Hoping this will be a faded memory soon. So sorry it happened to you.
@@ForsythiaHill The trick - seems to be to fill the pool with about 2 feet of water, adjust liner, fill a bit more, final adjustment of liner and you should be good to go thereafter.
@@PhilVerryChannel We filled to about 4' and then had a torrential rain, we thought would be a good thing but floated the liner up I suppose because we did not use a vacc? it was a mess but we even got it to work in the end - thought it was over at the time!
Here I am again 2021. We couldn’t get a liner last year because of Covid shortages. This year, we can’t find a pool place to install new one until end of August. Half the liner is off and the pool deep end is full up with rain water. Estimate $9000 Canadian from pool place now to do it start to finish. No choice. That or fill it in which honestly I am considering as I won’t get to swim in it again this year. Now year 3.
@@GirlArmy21 For some reason I did not get notified of this comment, anyway, I'm so sorry. A pool can be a real pain when it's messed up. What did you end up doing? If you get it filled in then you don't have to worry about it anymore -- hopefully -- and no more expense. Either that or sell the house! My neighbor filled his in and built a garage on top. May be some other use for the space?

We live right near you folks here in Earlysville, and my wife and I are about to embark on the very same project. How did you figure out the best way to get your sand squared away? Our pool liner is probably on it's last season, and I think we're looking at this job for spring 2021. Who installed your pool originally? Our pool came with the house, and I think our pool is the same construction.
Hey Bob! We just filled in the divots by moving the sand around. It doesn't have to be exact as the plastic will give a little and will conform to it. Your sand should be really nice if you get to the liner before it totally degrades like ours did. It will be packed down and fairly ready, just keep the rain directly off of it before you put in the new liner. Have your liner corners started ripping yet? We had a few years of patching corners before the whole liner was toast. Our pool came with the house too so we don't know who originally put it in or when. Are you all hiring or DIY?

We have three small holes in one corner way above the water line where the vinyl appears to have dried out, otherwise the three other corners are pliable and hole-free. The rest of the liner is still pliable and good.Our bottom is smooth under the vinyl. We’re totally going DIY, and I decided on the same website for the liner you used, even before watching your video today. I couldn’t believe someone so close to us posted the EXACT video we needed! I learned from the previous owner our pool was installed by Valley Pools. Yours looks similar enough that I’d venture they did yours as well. Our plan is to buy the vinyl in the fall (when it’s usually cheaper), and replace in the spring when we have steady temps over 75. We’re going to wait for a three-day rain-free forecast.
@@rmromanko Yes, that's so weird! My husband rigged up a good system when measuring for the new liner. Ours is 16' x 32 1/2' long then it's gets more technical when you get to the deep end vs shallow transition. I can email you our measurement paperwork. Of course yours will be slightly different but might be worth having to check your numbers if our pools were installed by the same company (probably was). Hi! I noticed that from some of your other videos you have or had chickens, my hen is making a weird beep like noise and I have no idea why, I thought it had something to do with pecking order but I couldn't find any info about it. I was wondering if you would have any idea why.
Hi Alex, it's really funny that u mention this. I've had chickens for I guess 7 years now and one of my recent 3 new hens started this beeping that I've never heard before! I figured out that it's because she is broody! This is when they sit on the nest and try to hatch out an egg. This chicken is 10 years old (a record maybe) and a pro at being broody. Is your chicken by chance trying to be in the nest box more than usual? I also noticed that sometimes birds do this too! It's nesting season and I presume they have a nest somewhere. A friend says it's sorta a warning to the other birds to not mess with them. I see it more as prepping for the hatching and something the mamma bird does to train the baby birds. This is a guess on my part as I've not had baby birds but seems like I've noticed them doing this beeping to the babies sometime in my life. I've not noticed beeping in any other situation.
@@ForsythiaHill My hen is only a couple months old and not old enough to lay eggs, also I don't have a rooster, she usually dose it when we let all the hens and ducks out in the garden, what I am worried about is if something got stuck in her throat, because we have a hen who likes to find small pieces of trash and give the trash to the other ones, I try to pick up the trash off the ground but she just keeps finding it. But thank you so much for telling me that, I'll keep an eye on her and see if she stops.
@@alexisnicole1576 How is your hen? Each bird can make its own unique sound. Hoping that is the case and nothing was stuck. When one of my hens has had something stuck, they would cough and I would tell them to drink some water and point at waterer -- they actually listen! Typically it dissolves and they hen doesn't actually choke but trash and stuff is another matter all together. If eating and stays down, I presume it's not a total blockage and probably will be ok. There is some sort of worm that can grow and clog the throat called a gapeworm. This would not be good, hopefully there is a wormer that can kill such a beast! Preventative worming is not a bad idea just in case.

I worked alone on my 17x34 pool. I used stakes and climbing rope along with clamps for holding vinyl tent tops secure to hold the liner in several spots after I had it unfolded all the way to soften in the sun.
Kept it near the top as I installed along the top.
It was a tough job for an old guy.

Once you pull out the old liner, what adhered the new liner to the pool?
It just lays right in, filling with water weighs it down. No adhesive is needed.
It's better to put a vac on it to seal it yo the walls
I've had my vinyl liner pool since 1986. Replaced the liners by myself three times. I simply used a good-sized shop vac after the liner was in and the stairs were sealed. Immediately sucked to form the liner to the walls and bottom. While that was in place, I put a knotted rope, anchored at the shallow end (that vinyl is slippery and I was wearing thick cotton socks), went in the deep end to put the drain ring on and cut the liner from the opening, then out to do the skimmer and finally the returns and light before filling with water. Took a couple days to fill the pool and I left the shop vac going until the water reached the end of the vac hose. Once it was to that level, the water evened it all out.

Purchased years ago and pool sizes vary greatly, so am sure more expensive now. I would recommend you compare prices with several companies before investing. It's a lot less expensive than hiring a pool installer.

I've ordered three liners. Each time it seemed like a different company. The order forms and measurement forms are all online.
I'd suggest the thickest liner you can get. The difference in price will be mitigated by the length of time you'll use the liner. I think they're good for maybe 10-12 years depending on climate.

Sorry I missed showing that element. It was one of the easy things. Our steps were already installed so all we had to do was unscrew thousands of screws and insert the liner and screw them back in. Good point though!

Foam board is better than sand and the pool liner is installed poorly leading to failure . pools can last up to 50 years when installed correctly. This one is not.
Our pool - sand and foam board has been in the ground since the 80's, it's easily 40 years and I don't understand how it could fail since it's not going anywhere. I do not see any degradation. The liner looks awesome and it's 3 years old, liners usually do not last more than 12 years. The other liner lasted 15+ and the current liner fits better than the old one ever did and didn't have holes patched or the corners ripped and bowing outward (the prior owners installed the original pool). We couldn't be happier with the outcome.
Vinyl liner company wants to charge be $5200 for liner and install for a small 9x17 pool. Yowza.
Which part is costing the $$ the liner or the install? I'm confused as the liner company usually doesn't do installs, pool companies do the install. I would get several bids.

Watch the video, it's a replacement of a liner, not a new install. We did not have to replace the stairway. It looks pretty straight forward to me! The key is to not overtighten the screws and to do it by hand. Good luck.
you didnt use vaccuum to get air out
yeah, we didn't.The liner floated up when we had a HUGE rain while the pool was nearly empty we ended up putting sandbags (walmart bags filled with excess sand) in the shallow end corners, in deep end and around edges to keep liner from floating up. It seemed to work. We didn't use a vaccuum. It is recommended that u do.
If the liner floats try to get the pool filled as quick as you can and the weight of the water will keep it from flowing in
@@josephgladish22 We decided to get the truck of water for the end - I wish we would have gotten a truck of water at the beginning! I think the liner floating up would have been avoided. Like u recommended, fill it up FAST, esp the deep end!

Yes, the step that I liked leaving out was paying a professional 20K to install a liner! Year #6 and it's like new, holding water, and no problems.
