Hi Jason, the main reason for the mess in Jatinegara station is the current renovation taking place. Nevertheless, enjoy the train adventure in the city, it is indeed a good deal for the fare. That is why the train system is currently carry about 1 million passengers a day. Best luck!

But you always seem to find the most hectic areas of just small shops and busy everyday life, and less in places with more space and amenities. It reflects daily life very well but not the nicest parts of the city itself. They are revamping the train stations in that area, most are done but not all. The President just announced that people should work from home, some schools closing, large events and gatherings cancelled, some fancy places closed, but most stuff is open and running as usual.

The fare depends on the distance tho. The minimum fare is 3000 rupiah for the first 25km and add 1000 rupiah for every next 10km. That was 2016 tho. I'm not sure now in 2020, but regardless it's still cheap
