HOW CHILDHOOD TRAUMA CAN MAKE YOU SICK

  • Our childhoods can truly make us sick, mentally and physically. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (The ACE Study) is one of the most important studies to ever explore and establish the link between childhood trauma and lifetime health, risk and disease.
Childhood trauma, CPTSD, PTSD, anxiety, chronic illness, substance abuse and so many mental and physical health outcomes are connected to our experiences in our childhoods, and our adulthoods.
It's not "all in your head," -- trauma lives in your heart, your mind and your body.
Perhaps that autoimmune or gastrointestinal illness is related to your childhood, or maybe you can't seem to stop abusing substances (not because you are "weak" but because it initially developed in your attempt to deal with your pain, and now you're addicted). Or perhaps you struggle with eating too much because there is another pain hidden deep inside that food protects you from dealing with...the list is endless.
Either way, so many of our unhealthy behaviors and health outcomes often began as unconscious attempts to resolve and deal with traumatic pain and traumatic stories....
💕💕I hope this video validates you, your struggles and your wounds, and your stories.💕💕
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻This video is an adaptation of the following presentation by Dr. Vincent Felitti:

While many of you are very familiar with the ACE study, I just wanted to create a video for my channel, because I am so passionate about the relationships between our childhood stories, our childhood traumas, and our childhood caregivers --and what happens to us in our adult lives, and how we can understand ourselves, as well as heal our lives.

It's VERY IMPORTANT to uncover this connection between physical and mental health, so we can go towards right solution to our problem, as individuals and societies.

I first learned of A.C.E. in my social services college courses a few years ago. However, as an elder student in my 60s, I was already aware of this connection through my own life experiences! Thank you for covering this important topic!

Thank you , you're so right about everything. Its so true. I got C-Ptsd from the abuse. I am a 47 female. I am the oldest out of five children my parents had. I went to Jesus cause of the abuse. Jesus is our hope. God is Love. I been a Christian for over ten years. I know my worth and values. My peace comes from God. God gives us victory. God is great all the time. I always been the black sheep in my family. I enjoy doing things on my own now by myself now. I walk away from Narcissists. I stay calm and quiet. Its not worth it to say anythng to Narcissists since they dont get it at all. Both of my parents are Narcissists so is my grandmother. My brothers and sisters are Narcissists Enablers. Narcissists enablers are just as bad as Narcissists. Narcissists are liars
    Narcissists are broken people
    Narcissists are insecure people
Narcissists always act like the victim
Narcissists are pure evil souls from the Devil
Narcissists never loved us at all
Narcissists dont care about you at all
Narcissists are fake and phony people

Hi All! This video is more like a presentation, and I know so many of you already know about this research - but if you don't, though I know I nerd out a bit here on this psych stuff - I truly believe it is so important to share!
❤️What are your thoughts about childhood trauma and ACEs?
Please take very good care this weekend!💕💕

I can’t tell you how much I identified with what you said here. I always thought that it was me. Somehow I was flawed, stupid, screwed up in my head etc. I was just diagnosed with C-PTSD last year. I’m 66 years old now.

So weird you did this, I just heard about this the day before you put this video out. Took the test and got my score. It finally made sense why I have had so many health issues for being so young. Dr. Sage, you are truly the best! I am so happy you are covering this topic!

Interesting...i have also always struggled with my weight. Lost 50 pounds and kept it off for a long period, a few years.
But then something happened that terribly triggered me and before I knew it I had gained it all back. A few weeks/months that is. Did not know you could gain thát fast. And because it went so fast I had a hard time realizing what was happening because mentally I was struggeling with the trigger, not with my weight initially.
And that weightgain in itself brought me into major depression afterwards too. Because now I was back where I started again.

I will never forget : at a CMH staff meeting the Team was tasked to 'take the A.C.E. test' When asked to present their scores the highest score among colleagues was generally, '1' ( "...well,my parents got divorced... ") When my boss asked me for my score ,reading my face, she 'moved on' and allowed me to keep my score to myself . It was a ' 7 '.

Thank you so much for your videos. They have explained so much what I have been through and my reaction to things. I scored a 8 possibly a 9 in the ACEs. I am morbidly obese and I have fibromyalgia, diabetes, depression and anxiety. Plus after seeing you videos I think I have CPTSD.

I have fibromyalgia and social anxiety. And problems losing weight. I also smoke weed that I plant myself, but I wouldn't call it addiction. It actually helps me to soothe my nervous system and manage the pain of muscles and joints.

Beautifully done and so important to have a basic knowledge (and, as illustrated by this video, even describing the basics is complicated) of the ACE system/score, but more importantly, the many and varied (and awful) effects of childhood trauma on the brain, the body, and long-term overall physical health as well as psychological. I have watched dozens of your videos on trauma, PTSD, CPTSD (my "topic"), attachment and related topics. I have my own story (and my own request for a "Dr. Kim Sage" video) which I will share with you in the near future; it is somewhat unique (but what do I know) but most assuredly tragic and sadder-than-sad-is-sad for me personally. I do not feel sorry for myself, but it is what it is---sad and devastating (that description I know is NOT unique). Anyway, thank you for this and all your videos--you are a treasure--a font of knowledge filled with empathy (and an incredibly hard-worker re your practice, your research, your presentations) who is, better than anyone else I've watched at getting across the right message in the right way--an empathetic, reassuring and knowledge-filled way. Hey Dr Sage, your videos are so insightful and helpful, thank you so much for sharing! ❤
Watching this video brings up a lot of anger for me, Iv tried to explain to my mom about so many things about our upbringing and why I don’t feel comfortable with our family system and she constantly says how she doesn’t understand why I can’t just let it go, it’s over, be happy and move, she can’t understand how I can’t be a family with them… watching your videos are healing, powerful and validating. 🙏🏻 thank you.

    Hi Lovely handy video.
Just the Hippocampus makes many new neurons everyday... and rewiring happens... your brain does change with plasiticity, if you can stay out of Trauma... long enough...
my experience was changing the enviroent of an autistic chikd, and so the child could change its choices use words and reconnect to the parents...
and they have a different life.
I beliece this is because new brain(and inbody neurons, were made.
My point is I don't think people feel hopefull if you say that is all the brain neurons you always have(perhaps the amount of neurons, as unused ones often get trimmed- I think).
So knowing that new neurons are formed... new ways of thinking and behaviour is possible, I hope, gives Hope.
    Otherwise I like your videos.
Lots of selflove wishes to everyone growing out of and away from trauma, into preventing trans-generational issues, growing in prospering.
    Best Wishes.
    C
