Correction: In the お/ご honorific prefix section, some captions incorrectly show kunyomi/onyomi explanations. It should be お for kunyomi and ご for onyomi, sorry about that!
I think it should have been also mentioned that the です part with adjectives is there just for formality. Because 大きい, 太い and all the examples given already have a copular "to be" function in them on default - 大きい already means "is big", NOT JUST "big". That is why you cannot use だ with them, because い already expresses it. です is solely used for putting it into formal language form to differentiate it from the casual one, having only 大きい.

@@LachsLauch Here’s a tip. Find a cheap or free VPN (you can find some VPN extensions for Chrome and Firefox) and change your region to JP. Then, change your location on youtube to Japanese. By doing this, you’ll only get ads from Japan. I’ve been doing it for a couple years now; helps keep your immersion environment consistent. Your data is still being collected, but at least you can still learn while it’s happening, lol. Good luck!

I'm 45 years old and since 17 years old I've been on and off with Japanese falling in and out of love with it. Not for the sake of anime, games, food or any of that specifically but to open a door to an entire culture and better connect with more people in the world and a way that I would otherwise not be able to. This man's a mad lad. To be honest, this is way too fast to learn all the grammar but using this as a review for everything is a brilliant use of time. Might watch it several times.
I like to use this as a way to find words I would like to focus on (for example, なくてもいい I would very much like to learn. I have friends in japan, and I would like to convey a lot of things aren't necessary.). Yeah, it's a bit much, but if I can find individual words, and then do more research on it, allows me to learn a lot more from that.
There's also an Anki Deck in the description, and it's a work of art! All the phrases with images, voiceover, grammarpoints, even furigana that shows on hover-over. Basically this video, but interactive.
Came back to write a cheatsheet of these since I'm gonna be at an event. A lot of these points are well explained but it's also very important to be exposed to the language being used naturally as well as try to use it every day.

This is not only an incredibly concise introduction to Japanese grammar, but also entertaining and watchable. One of the best-quality materials I've seen to any language. As someone who spends more time studying more poorly-supported languages like Khmer and Guarani, I'm coming to admire Japanese language instruction the same way I admire Japanese aesthetics or architecture. I wonder if there's any other culture on Earth so dedicated to doing things correctly.

Holy fucking shit, I'm an Editor so I know how much fucking work and time went into this video. I'm almost getting a panic attack by just thinking about how much absurd work is in this. This video is worth thousands of dollars & I think many people don't even realize it. We got: ALL of N5-grammar OVER 100 examples MORE than 60 DIFFERENT videogames as a reference ALL with footage of them being used in context EVERY single part is nicely presented WITH a translation/meaning AND the written out sentence ALSO color-coded/highlighted that part of the sentence AND ON TOP OF IT ALL is he actually takes his time and explains EVERY SINGLE FREAKING THING This must've been such an absurd mountain of work, and I just only mentioned the EDITING work, you also have to actually think about each grammar point, find a good and fitting example of it in a video-game, then ALSO grab that footage in a decent quality from SOMEWHERE and actually manage to pull through recording/writing it all up. These are the educational videos we need, but don't deserve. It's enough to have a general understanding of the grammar as a (not) English native, I don't know the name of any grammar point in English. But can use it fairly proficiently just by having a general idea and listening for examples for hours. Unless is for a test it really doesn't matter. For me I'm not doing it to get a grade but to understand the grammar more intuitively. 🗿

I have a bit over 1k matured vocabulary cards that in my anki deck (close to 4 months using core 2k/6k) and I have not touched too much. With tae kim's grammar guide and this video I was able to get a better grasp of grammar and I feel very comfortable doing immersion. This video should have way more views then it has especially for people like myself that learned japanese to play games and watch anime in the native language. while the video is quite old, one comment on です and だ, while they are the copula and equivalent to "to be", if です is used with I-adjectives, like your examples, its used purely for politeness. You cannot use だ with I-adjectives, since they dont need or already have the copula function within them, 大きいだ would be incorrect grammar.

You explain the grammar so well! The examples are very helpful as well. Sometimes grammar points like this feel too abstract unless put into a sentence, and using sentences from familiar media helps a lot with making things like connotation and tone click. Definitely using these videos to help me study!

What I love most about this video, apart from the enormous effort, is that the games on display are absolute god tier stuff. Games that I *actually* want to play in Japanese.
because it is always tought in the wrong way. Go watch cure dolly videos, it explains WHY grammar is like this. And not only that the grammar is this. Example: here he says to put KATA after a MASU form without masu. Correct way to tell this would be that any verb stem in the "い" form becomes a NAME: So hanasu -> transformed to I becomes hanashi "a talk", and adding the helper KATA becomes "the kind/way of the talk". the way of talking. Masu has literally NOTHING to do with this.

I've improved a lot by playing or visual novels (Steins Gate, etc), for example the Grisaia Phantom Trigger series, the great thing about it is that it's full-voiced and you can display both japanese and english, also you can repeat every sentence as many times as you want and rehear it.
Genshin Impact. It's free to play on PS4 and mobile (not sure about other platforms but look it up). It's a really well developed RPG which visually closely resembles Breath Of The Wild. Dialogue can be switched to Japanese with subtitles either in English or Japanese. One of the amazing features is that once you've unlocked a couple of characters you can play back their dialogue in the menu. So you can select a phrase and listen to it over and over again.

I think it should have been also mentioned that the です part with adjectives is there just for formality. Because 大きい, 太い and all the examples given already have a copular "to be" function in them on default - 大きい already means "is big", NOT JUST "big".
That is why you cannot use だ with them, because い already expresses it. です is solely used for putting it into formal language form to differentiate it from the casual one, having only 大きい.

@@LachsLauch Here’s a tip. Find a cheap or free VPN (you can find some VPN extensions for Chrome and Firefox) and change your region to JP. Then, change your location on youtube to Japanese.
By doing this, you’ll only get ads from Japan. I’ve been doing it for a couple years now; helps keep your immersion environment consistent. Your data is still being collected, but at least you can still learn while it’s happening, lol. Good luck!

I'm 45 years old and since 17 years old I've been on and off with Japanese falling in and out of love with it. Not for the sake of anime, games, food or any of that specifically but to open a door to an entire culture and better connect with more people in the world and a way that I would otherwise not be able to. I like to use this as a way to find words I would like to focus on (for example, なくてもいい I would very much like to learn. I have friends in japan, and I would like to convey a lot of things aren't necessary.). Yeah, it's a bit much, but if I can find individual words, and then do more research on it, allows me to learn a lot more from that.

This is not only an incredibly concise introduction to Japanese grammar, but also entertaining and watchable. One of the best-quality materials I've seen to any language. As someone who spends more time studying more poorly-supported languages like Khmer and Guarani, I'm coming to admire Japanese language instruction the same way I admire Japanese aesthetics or architecture. WITH a translation/meaning
AND the written out sentence

AND ON TOP OF IT ALL is he actually takes his time and explains EVERY SINGLE FREAKING THING
This must've been such an absurd mountain of work, and I just only mentioned the EDITING work,
you also have to actually think about each grammar point,
find a good and fitting example of it in a video-game,
then ALSO grab that footage in a decent quality from SOMEWHERE
and actually manage to pull through recording/writing it all up.
These are the educational videos we need, but don't deserve.

It's enough to have a general understanding of the grammar as a (not) English native, I don't know the name of any grammar point in English. But can use it fairly proficiently just by having a general idea and listening for examples for hours. Unless is for a test it really doesn't matter.
For me I'm not doing it to get a grade but to understand the grammar more intuitively. 🗿

I have a bit over 1k matured vocabulary cards that in my anki deck (close to 4 months using core 2k/6k) and I have not touched too much.
With tae kim's grammar guide and this video I was able to get a better grasp of grammar and I feel very comfortable doing immersion.
This video should have way more views then it has especially for people like myself that learned japanese to play games and watch anime in the native language.

life changer video, yes or yes? honestly, I could find myself enjoying grammar enough to study by myself, but dude, this video made me realize how nice it is to actually understand the grammar rather than just the words and now I'm studying grammar with more attention and love! Thank you so much!
while the video is quite old, one comment on です and だ, while they are the copula and equivalent to "to be", if です is used with I-adjectives, like your examples, its used purely for politeness. You cannot use だ with I-adjectives, since they dont need or already have the copula function within them, 大きいだ would be incorrect grammar.

Man you do such an amazing job with these works. I learned a lot I just never undersood why you seldom use such random words and verbs for your examples : Sspecially the verb "Die", and keep on conjugating it. It happens very rearely but if you fix it you are absolutely phenomenal. Thanks a lot.

I've only seen the first ten mins so far but this looks to be really simple and easy, I am just watching this for fun but I appreciate how the clips so far have little context, anyone who watches this first won't be spoiled on any of the games seen in this video
man i'm probably late by 7 months, but videos like these and creators like you are one of the best, i personally learned english this way too (playing games, watching movies) because i feel learning a language is best suited as if we are a child learning new things, so in a way i kind of understand it a lot more, but the thing is that there's not really a lot of youtubers like you who make these kinds of content, which is why i appreciate every each one of your videos, so please continue making more videos like these
I did not expect this video to be so easy to get through. I love the voice acting for the games with no spoken dialogue, too. Also, I respect the absolutely ridiculous amount of time and energy this must have taken to put together.

You explain the grammar so well! The examples are very helpful as well. Sometimes grammar points like this feel too abstract unless put into a sentence, and using sentences from familiar media helps a lot with making things like connotation and tone click. Definitely using these videos to help me study!

You’re amazing! I’ve studied so much kanji, I’m at the N3 level. And yet, I struggle with basic N5 grammar. This is just what I needed!
because it is always tought in the wrong way. Go watch cure dolly videos, it explains WHY grammar is like this. And not only that the grammar is this.
Example:
here he says to put KATA after a MASU form without masu.
Correct way to tell this would be that any verb stem in the "い" form becomes a NAME:
So hanasu -> transformed to I becomes hanashi "a talk", and adding the helper KATA becomes "the kind/way of the talk". the way of talking.
Masu has literally NOTHING to do with this.

Great video :) But even though it is old, do keep in mind that the です part with adjectives is there just for formality. Because 大きい, 太い and all the examples given already have a copular "to be" function in them on default - 大きい already means "is big", NOT JUST "big".
That is why you cannot use だ with them, because い already expresses it. です is solely used for putting it into formal language form to differentiate it from the casual one, having only 大きい.
100% that's probably the one thing I'd want to change about this video! Didn't do a good enough job explaining that imo!

I am trying my best, even if I have to regulate my time now quite a lot due to other stuff, so it has been relatively slowed down for a few months now. But I got contacted by another fellow editor that also has access to editing there, so it is going a tad bit faster :D But still there is work to be done, I am currently just editing the earlier lessons that are rather rough yet.
But in due time it will be fully edited and then we may go for the other Dolly videos perhaps.
It is great to hear there are more people discovering such underrated channels as Dolly (R.I.P.) and Game Gengo, they truly deserve it with their stellar contribution and work and in my opinion it is downright criminal they are getting so few views.
I do not use Reddit except for some occasional googling for answers and stuff, so I do not know about it :D

I've improved a lot by playing or visual novels (Steins Gate, etc), for example the Grisaia Phantom Trigger series, the great thing about it is that it's full-voiced and you can display both japanese and english, also you can repeat every sentence as many times as you want and rehear it.

Genshin Impact. It's free to play on PS4 and mobile (not sure about other platforms but look it up).
It's a really well developed RPG which visually closely resembles Breath Of The Wild.
Dialogue can be switched to Japanese with subtitles either in English or Japanese.
One of the amazing features is that once you've unlocked a couple of characters you can play back their dialogue in the menu. So you can select a phrase and listen to it over and over again.
