I was quite ill with Australian flu in 2018, and I remember watching this and finding it strangely soothing..
I was ten when I visited, thirty years ago. The memories are coming back. Thanks for posting this.
I used to go here in the school holidays, my great granny lived in the house at the boats. I remember a wee blue van coming around with grocerys great memories thank you
Thank you for letting us ride around! It makes a place become real, when you're allowed to ride shotgun and see a place (without commentary) and not on some silly tourism promo video...just the raw, real place. Love it!
Instablaster.
Excellent comment.
I was in Lerwick between 1994 & 1999, managing the Thule Bar amongst other things! This brings back a lot of great memories. Thanks! From John McGeown, Oamaru,New Zealand.
A really good look at Lerwick compared to the short visit there & into the countryside from a cruise ship...Shetland seems to be a magical place...very enjoyable video, thanks
Lots of snow. So many cars not under cover, great video.
it's so strange seeing Lerwick on youtube but this is great!

Very awesome. Despite being born and raised in the New Orleans area, I am very much a cold weather fan. Was just in Scotland in jan-feb 2013, and it's a stunning place. Super jealous.
I was in Scotland in June 2013 from Australia. It was bloody hot- so hot in fact that I had to buy a pair of sandals and a Panama hat in Edinburgh -------- crazy eh???!

Great video. I spent 2 months in Lerwick in summer 1999. Beautiful place.
I loved this video! We visited Shetland this past September and seeing this video brought back many memories. To the poster below - Shetland is far more than cottages surrounded by sheep. It's a beautiful jewel that you should take the opportunity to visit. And while the scenery is magnificent, the air the freshest I've ever breathed, it is the wonderful people of Lerwick that bring back my fondest memories.
Brings back memories. Thanks, fae dean in New York. :)
Thank you for this tour, very informative and interesting.
It looks so different from the TV show, Shetland, which is an excellent show.
Hi Jimmy, I was in Shetland 78-82 building the terminal at Sullom Voe. We had a cottage at Wethersta, near Brae. It was one of the best times in my life and I loved the place. I'm now almost 67 and I've "been back" several times but only through Google Maps alas. This time of year I think of Up Helly A and the massive amounts of snow we had back then, where it'd be on the road for 3 months and everyone just got on with it.
I always watch "Shetland" and wonder if people think its as dangerous and crime ridden as the programme would suggest...when I was there we never took the keys out of the car nor thought to lock the door, and if somebody was walking on the roadside the first car along stopped to pick them up...it might be you next time. Loved the wee vid so thanks
Well, I loved it that you drove around slowly enough to put a bottle of milk on every doorstep. It was just what I needed to see. I've been in New York for over 25 years and I have it in my mind to get out of the States to retire -- have been looking at Scottish islands and love the way this town lies, from a bit higher and inland right down to the water. I'm from New England originally, and this looks real good to me.
I may meet you some day, jimmydukens. Thanks for the town tour!
Thank you for posting this. Loved it.
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed that.
That brings it back. I miss Shetland.
This is staggeringly cathartic! Nice.
Worked there in 1979 painting the school great memories
Beautiful! Please make more year round! Thank you!
It did almost this exact same trip today, 11 years later. Looked identical 😁
Apart from the speed bumps and the roundabout at North Lochside for the Hostel.
I love Shetland. Hope I can get back there sometime.
hehe yun wis cute!! i watched it till da end!
Well not much snow but I am fascinated with weather out there ☺️🤗
Whoaaa.... scared me !! Thought u were drivin' on wrong side of street then remembered... u arent in Texas USA... lol.. thanx fer the tour... really nice vid.... ♪♫♪
@Sredni Vashtar cute... !!! :-)
Hope to put up a longer run round more of the streets now that the length of the vid's can be longer.
Just waiting for a nice quiet sunny morning.
There's a high coming in from Norway so maybe soon
A lovely video. It doesn't usually snow in Setland.
Great stuff Jimmy. Brought back great memories of my last visit when I brought my granddaughter up to meet folk back in October 2007. Even the weather is the same. Many thanks
Pass our house when we lived there 24 seconds in then moved to our newly built house in Kjurkhul Quarff.Luved in Shetland for 17 years.
Está muy bonita su ciudad :D
Snow that deep is rather rare....usually they get more of a mixture of rain and snow
Thanks! This is what RUclips is for!
Where’s the murder? Don’t worry, I am just being a smart arse! Thank you for an enjoyable and realistic video. Have a good day. From Sydney Australia
Thankyou!
@TreyRoque We have a lot of crofts as well but our towns are a wee bit bigger than folk think
@kitiowa because a lot of people are interested to see what the town is like in all weathers.
If you look at the amount of interest it should answer your silly question.
Looks dangerous to drive about in that weather !!! very quaint and pretty in the old section.
Enjoyed that, thanks.
Really interesting.
Bit hilly but not too bad -- is it good for bicycles, or too windy?
I pressume the snowfall that Leewick gets is the wet slushy kind, and melts fairly quick?
Here is a good site for you to visit.
It will help you find out online what is available.
I would also look at life in Shetland.
It is a beautiful place but it is the farthest North in Britain and access to the mainland is an expensive hour on a plane or a 12 hour overnight trip on the ferry.
Very pretty. Does Shetland get some measurable snowfall every winter, or is snowfall uncommon?
abhitron we used to get snow but we haven’t gotten a reasonable amount in years ☹️
What's the main source of heat?
I will look out for you :o)
I was wondering if they got snow.
@kitiowa I don't get what you mean.
Why what?
@katsaholic Were you the big bugger that did the HAKA
Looks like a neighborhood in a Colorado mountain town😀
Only time I've seen the place with any colour.
Sloth from The Goonies We've had colour tv for years now. :)
Sloth from The Goonies Only joking. It's not a bad place to live and the barren landscape has it's own beauty.
Like the rest of GB we have a multitude of races and cultures as well including our fair share of the Polish, Czechoslovakian etc influx.
Not quite sure how much more road traffic we can cope with.
Jimmy Neill It's the same across Scotland I suppose. The building materials lead to grey houses that are matched by the sky :L.
It would look nicer if there were more trees. How do trees/plants fair in that climate? It seems to me that most of the island has been deforested.
It's the lack of shelter from the salty gales coming off the sea.
There are plenty of nice green areas in the towns and gardens where the shelter is.
You are right about the grey skies though.
There's been no summer this year.
+Jimmy Neill What constitutes a good summer on Shetland? Apparently the highest temperature officially recorded in Lerwick was only 23 °C. It makes our mainland UK summers seem tropical :L. The temperatures seem to stay in a very narrow band, hovering around the same number almost constantly. Although the winters seem quite favourable, with the temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, the record low being just -8°C, which I found very surprising. It's a big bonus, because you have very little ice and frost, which can both be major headaches for various reasons.
A nice video even though it's from over 11 years ago. Managed to find it on Google street view as well so I saw some of it when the sun was out which gives a good comparison although even that is from 2015.
Everyone has dash cams now so there a many more to see.
I must get back to it as there have been a few changes. Watch this space.
AHHHHH!!!! He's driving on the other side of the road!!!! I almost got car sick watching it!!! Shetland..... watch out... I will be arriving in the next year or two!! If some crack is driving on the wrong side of the road..... it's probly me!!! lol
Always wanted to live there but I could not find supporters enough
@jimmydukens The hits are about a third of the town. Is that a lot of interest?
Why do I sense the emergence of a new reality TV network.

I’m from California and I’m watching this because 3rd season of great British bake off final was this pm on local tv. 2Nd place was James Morton of Shetland...like where in the hell is that ...?
If you look 4:20 into the video you will see the Peerie Shop on the left. It's in their cafe that they sell his cakes.
Jimmy Neill - I would have thought he was a home town hero. I see I was right. I’m in Sacramento ca. I might purchase his most recent book on the science of baking.
Lerwick has a latitude of 60.1550° N, but your winters seem quite mild considering your northerly position.
I guess that’s the Gulf Stream for you.
The Shetlands have a similar latitude to anchorage in Alaska .
@katsaholic The Thule has changed big time since then . I will do another vid soon of the street and go in through the Thule just for you. Someone i me t last week said they missed you. You must have given them a free pint.:o)
@dablade02 I am.

Usually it is between 25-40F in winter or even warmer. Lat. Like Anchorage. Late decenber 5-6 hours of light late june the simmer dim
@manthasagittarius1 only if you want to keep fit.
Bad place to come if you don't like the wind.
Read my Twitter @onlyjcn
jimmy thinking of moving over there problem we are worrying about is im white my wifes black we have had problems in past was wondering whats like there ?
Racism is more or less non existent here. We have quite a large Asian community and although there are not so many black folk, the ones that I know are very happy here. To my knowledge there have never been any barriers.
@jimmydukens why did you drive around town with the camera running then just go back home?
Not much changed since then.
I will see what i can do for you. :o)
i take it a car is best in Lerwick
Very wet snow, We have more snow then that in Kent, proper drifting snow that blocks the roads and gives a whiteout. I Would have thought u would get more snow in THE Shetland Isles. How about the big freeze in 2012?
We don't get much snow in Shetland because of the warm air coming off of the Atlantic
Shetland council and my county Aberdeenshire both do the same with the snow, do the paths better!!
I mean - WHY?!
Great video. I spent 2 months in Lerwick in summer 1999. Beautiful place.
