Make sure you look for super nova’s in you images after you take them.
You need a good reference image for a base line.
Then check your images for super nova’s
Then always right down your date and time of image and your location
    information.
I have enjoyed several of your YT’s so far.
I really like your laid back yet enthusiastic
    approach.
I am 61 years old and have been doing visual astronomy since I was 8 years old
    with a 60mm spotting scope.
Then moved on over the years to
    several nice refractors.
    150mm F/5 ach
150 mm F/15 old school long focus
    204mm F/9 ach
16 inch F/4.5 which does not get used near enough.
    Enjoy your hobby.
Well Done on all I have seen so far.

Congrats on the new hardware. One tip: when you are ready, ditch the hand controller and use the ASIair Pro. As others told me: you can skip the star alignments and do plate solving. It is VERY EASY relatively speaking. I also added a Tobson brand DC-DC converter to my battery box. It takes the battery voltage and converts it to 13.8V. I did this becuase I found the EQ6R Pro to be sensitive to low voltage. So, even if my battery goes down to 10V, the voltage to the mount and other electronics is 13.8V (until the battery drops below 8V).

Nicely done!! I noticed that you're using your finder scope as your guide scope. The scope should work alright but the finder scope mount may be your guiding problem. Too much flexure possible. This video is two years old so you may have already changed your guide scope mount. Anyway, your enthusiasm is terrific.

Brilliant photo! The pinwheel has some nice coloring to it. The more I study the photo, the more galaxies I see! I love the cyan-colored NGC 5471 right below, and the edge-on saucer of NGC5422 in the upper left. You got good resolution on NGC 5474 in the lower right corner. NGC 5473 looks a little fuzzy patch next to that neat little triangle of stars in the lower left region. Again, well done!

Hi Helena, you said "my guiding is actually awful but my graphs looks decent".
Well, fine graphs doesn't mean good guide.
I saw that you use a 9x50 viewfinder to guide, which should have a focal length of 190 mm, and a Lodestar X2 as a guide camera.
This camera has 8.2x8.4 pixels which are too large for your viewfinder focal length. Lodestar is great for OAG on SCT scope that have a long focal length.
If you drive with PHD2, and use a Canon as the main camera (4.3 pixels), you would be forced to set up mi.mo. parameters to extremely low values.
Among other things, the mi.mo. values are also related to the seeing and the values that you should be set would be insufficient even in case of exceptional seeing.
Therefore, I recommend that you change your guide camera, taking one with a pixel of 3.75 or less.
Better if combined with a guide telescope with a longer focal length, 60/240 for example.
You will find many informations in internet on how to calculate it. It's a function of main and guiding scope focal lengths and of main camera and autoguider camera pixel size.
Try to stay between 0.15 and 0.20 values.
And sorry for my bad english ...

    • @HelenasAstrophotography
      @HelenasAstrophotography  4 года назад

Thank you for the advice! I actually said my guiding wasn’t awful. It was pretty decent for that night of imaging. I’m not having any trouble with the 9x50 and lodestar....I have others who use the same! Thank you though and I’ll take your advice if it begins to play up 🙂

I found your channel just today and have been watching some of your videos, very inspiring stuff. I myself am making the leap from stationary wide-angle nightsky photography to a more dedicated setup much like yours. I have a practical question if that's alright. The finder scope attached to the Skywatcher-Evostar-80ED-DS-PRO-Apochromatic-Refractor, do you need anything extra in order to remove the eye-piece and stick a guide camera in there? Thanks and clear skies. :)

Hi! Yes, if you are using the same scope you will need this: www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/skywatcher-finderscope-to-c-adaptor.html
What guide camera do you have? There are different ones for different guiders.

I do deep astrophotography too and I just love to see your enthusiasm and passion.
That's what I like in astronomy and astrophotography in particular - the never ending learning curve!
I suggest modding your canon camera by removing the inner IR filter so it can see the Ha line.
I did it several years ago, before I could afford a decent astro-dedicated camera.
It will open for you another level of beauty of the night sky.

I noticed you had a flattener in the image train. With that you're actually imaging at 510mm and f 6.4. makes a difference when framing in software or plate solving. Apt needs the correct information to plate solve and to download the correct indexes.

Helena I love your videos. Even though I'm 67 I find your enthusiasm and "can do attitude" inspiring. May I make a suggestion for your consideration. As you progress to heavier payloads like the Esprit 120 you may want to get in the habit of adding any necessary counterweights before the payload. This will prevent the tripod from ever falling over. The sequence I am referring to is defined on page 5 of the EQ6 Instruction Manual. Clear Skies!

Just a word of advice when building your rig. You should always put your counter weights on first before mounting the scope. And keep the weights further out than necessary till you get to the balancing. That way if your R.A. axis accidentally becomes unlocked you will not have an expensive accident.

These images looks superb 21 million light years away that came through your telescope on DSLR! I bet you felt so good with these images! How good is telescope for deep sky photography? Can it photograph objects like the horse head nebula and M16? I'm looking for a telescope that I can photograph these object's and others too. Last few night apart from last night was clear and I did a great star trails with my Hauwei P20 smartphone turned out very good! Very enjoyable video and you did great!!! Stay safe!

Awesome stuff! I would recommend a telescope simulator online to calculate your field of view. I use Telescopius. There you can type in your camera setting and the specs of the telescope you are looking at, go to an object and you’ll be able to see if it’s in the frame or not! However the 80mm is awesome for the Horsehead and M16 so you are in luck!! Check my links in the description. Clear skies!

What eyepiece did you use to get Pinwheel in such a clear sight. Astrophotography is far away from me, Have no DSLR just a ZWO ASTI 178 CMOS, not used yet. I still have so much to learn, connecting all the stuff, using the right SW on my laptop and so on.

    • @HelenasAstrophotography
      @HelenasAstrophotography  4 года назад +1

Thanks for asking! I’m working up to it. Going from a completely manual dob to a fully computerised setup has a lot of challenges and they are much easier to overcome with an 80mm refractor rather than a 120 apo. It will be out soon but when it’s out I want to be able to use it to it’s full potential rather than messing about with mistakes I could’ve resolved with a simpler setup. Hope this clear that up!

@@HelenasAstrophotography Understandable! Also, backyard EOS is great, if you have your laptop out for guiding already. It means you basically don't have to touch your camera and can control it all by the laptop, in case you didn't know. i have found it amazing! :0)
