Capturing M51 - The WHIRLPOOL Galaxy - Using Plate Solving

- Join me for another night of astrophotography in my cold, dark and wet back-garden as I photograph The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51). Galaxy season is slowly drifting away, and nebulae season is in sight. As M51 drifts into the West, I am determined to bag it before another year passes.

Hi everyone! Apologies for the horrid compression at the end. Head over to Helenas_Astro on Instagram to see it in full resolution. Working on getting this fixed for the next video :)
sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my password. I love any tricks you can give me!
@Richard Ashton instablaster :)
@Aldo Melvin Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Aldo Melvin It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
@Richard Ashton glad I could help =)
This channel is missing some zeros at the end of the subs count. That's some proper content
Wow that’s so kind of you to say! I do my best for my viewers and it makes my day that they enjoy it.
You’re guide wire broke, you say with a big smile. Happy to see you’re having fun out there! Nice photo!
With this type of content you might reach 100k subs in no time.
P.S
Great video!!!
Another great , inspiring video Helena. One note, when editing your videos, watch your audio levels. Your music mix is way too high. I kept having to turn the sound down during the music parts and then way back up when your talking parts came on. I'm not sure what program you are using but most editing packages have a "normalize audio" setting. Both vocals and music should be equalized to around -10db.
But your content is AWESOME! Keep up the great work.
g`day helena great little video... dylan o'donnell and trevor (astro backyard) better look out helena`s here and she says hold my whiskey guys ... great editing and very well shot and very nice pic ... looking forward to your next video
cheers
james D
That is far too kind! I can only do my best.
Capturing M51 is not easy.
Good job ! Helena
Try to have the same volume throughout the video. I'm constantly adjusting the volume. For the rest good work.
Hey I have asked this Question once before but I didn’t quite understand what your response was. So could you tell me what’s a good camera adapter, wide field lens (I think thats what it’s called)
hey hella , i've been watching you very long time and i learn a lot how to process but can you recommend and online course ? please reply dear thanks
Clear outside pic is clearly fake! Mine never shows 0's 😁😁
Where did you get the wall constellation chart with the LED lights??
nice video :)
try moving the rings back so you can get a better grip on the dove tail bar
Oh and when will Saturn and Jupiter be visible
Buen video, saludos desde Palma de Mallorca.
Sorry to hear about the usb-c, but you took it way better than I would have! Re: Scottish summers - I visited for the first time exactly one year ago today. It was absolutely fantastic, but yeah, maybe not so warm :)
Love the comment “What is summer in Scotland anyway?” Well, sometimes it can be better than England.
Have you tried using NINA to control your equipment I find it easy to use and not at all complicated.
I haven't but I will certainly check it out! Been hearing a lot of good things about it :)
......and the plate solving?
Stumbled into M51 by accident a few weeks ago.... well of course I aimed at it on purpose but I can't see a hint of any deep sky target so I let the goto mount point at it then I find center it after verifying it's presence with a few high-gain exposures.
I like the direction you're taking with your new content, specifically how you share cool scientific facts about the target in the first half of the video.
New to your channel. I noticed you using a level and setting circles to do your polar alignment. Do you have a video of how you setup and align your mount? It looks very precise and I’m trying to improve my polar alignments.
Liked and subscribed!
It did came out good Helena!
Thank you Ray!!
Hi - nice to see how enthusiastic you are, great to see. If you don't mind me asking where did you get the wall chart, I want one for my observatory
Very nicely put together video Helena, top stuff! You have a bright future ahead of you for sure, keep up the grand work :)
Thank you for the kind words!! Clear skies :)
Love from india🥰
Love your chanel
Hi,
why do you use a spirit level on the mount across the RA axis? You levelled the tripod why do you then put the level on the DEC mount when youve moved the RA axis?
Hi! That’s just me putting the mount into home position. So counter weights down, pointing north. In order to set the setting circles I need the RA to be level first so I can turn it 90 degrees towards 0. Same for the DEC 🙂
@@HelenasAstrophotography Ahh got you. Do you Polar Align using the polar scope. If you use a guide scope with sharpcap itd make you P.A much more accurate and quicker than using the setting circles :)
I say this because it happened to me, make sure your level is accurate. I spent two days on the edge of tears because I could get my base to level. Finally my dad asked me if I had checked my level. Sure enough, 3 out of my 3 levels were junk. I bought all new levels (checked before buying) and problem solved. I know you didn't have that problem but someday it may save you some headache. Keep up the good work! Clear skies!
Thanks for the advice Kevin! Really helps out when these things come around. Clear skies.
loving your videos and details.... Summer in Scotland ---> b&w ... LOL ... Salute you !!! \m/
Thank you sir! Yes, it’s non existent.
Nice.
That’s some great content here. Continue, and you will have lots of subs in no time. Stay safe and clear skies.
Hi Helena, I have the EQ6-R Pro mount as well. I never extend the legs, for 2 reasons, 1 it is more stable for guiding, 2 I don't have to lift my Esprit 100ED as high to install it onto the mount !! Just food for thought :) Keep up the great work..
Good to know!
Forgot to ask what country do you live in?
I'm in Scotland!
Hello from NJ in the US. New subscriber. Love your channel and your videos. You’ve inspired me to dust off my telescope and do some viewing.
I’m so glad you are getting your scope out again! :)
You are doing cool things all the best ....
Thank you! Take care.
It came out very well considering your problems with the cable.
You do a beautiful work. I hope you meet all your goals. count on my support, views of your videos, and subscription to your channel. thanks ...
Thanks for subbing!
Nice results, this was the first DSO I ever shot so M51 will always have something special to me :)
Lovely pic! I find not extending the legs on the tripod more stable and easier to put the head and telescope on! Also I would have forgone the 0.8 reducer on such a small target!
Cheers for that Shaun!
As a novice to astrophotography I'm really enjoying watching your videos and learning some tips. Keep up the good work.
Glad to hear it!
Good shot despite the lack of guiding.
Nice video and final result. Have you considered bring the center of gravity for your rig down a bit for imaging - better stability. No need to have it so high unless you are doing visual.
Thank you for that one! You’ll see in my next video (not sure on upload time yet) that I have taken this into consideration! :)
Fantastic shot of M51 and loved the music in video! Can you tell me how much is set up scope mount etc? Looks so stylish. What camera setting did you use to get image? Weather here in scotland can be great durening summer like 2018 when it was great summer. 2 months ago we had great spell for observing! Just looking forward to when the nights get dark again as it's after midnight when sky gets a bit dark here. Do you use Photopills app? Fantastic app how to get legendary shots of milky way. Take care!
Hello hello! If you go to First Light Optics, that will give you a rough idea on pricing. As for camera settings I used ISO 800, 60 second shots and I shot 120 of them.
@@HelenasAstrophotography I've recently bought the skywatcher star adventurer pro pack and I've just ordered the skywatcher Evostar 72ED ds pro and this telescope is tiny and yet it's getting great reviews and I just found out this tiny telescope can photograph the Horsehead nebula a target I really want to photograph. What Finder scope should I get or autoguider? I got star tracker and tiny telescope because I'm going to Glencoe or out side Aviemore where it's pretty dark and hopefully do deep sky photographing while camping. I know uig in isle of Skye is really dark sky location so I'm going to use both in dark locations. What you suggest I buy for the star tracker and telescope that I would find so useful? Just hoping I get to Glencoe after 15th October to try this out. Coronavirus has stopped me due to lockdown. Hopefully I'll get to really test the Pixel 4 smartphones astrophotography mode in Glencoe in October too. I'm dying to test it out in dark skies! Take care!!!
Hey Helena,
great image! Can you please tell me the link of the Eqdirect Cable?
Cheers!
Hi, I'm not Helena, but I think I can help :)
If you're from Europe I can recommend a small company that ships them really fast and relatively cheap.
They are at instein.eu, I think they are from Spain. On their main page they have different versions of EQdir to connect the computer to the mount. I never tried the Bluetooth or the wifi versions, trusting more the good old copper wires of usb.
if you're running a new SkyWatcher mount, you don't need the eqdirect cable. Connect cable from hand controller to computer, set the hand controller to direct control and voila...
Just search for LYNX ASTRO EQMOD cable...
mrtheoden I’ve been running my eq6 with regular usb directly to the mount, no hand controller. Most of the info online is dated, newer mounts don’t need a special cable.
@@spookydonkey2195 you just need the new syscan v4 controller from memory, and updated firmware for it. I suspect some older mounts are not backwards compatible, but since I got a new HEq5pro a few months back, I didn't think to ask SkyWatcher about older mounts being backwards compatible.
Good video and good photographic team,
Nice pic👌
Great job.
Thanks Mike!
Awesome video! I use app called astrospheric does the same as clear outside. Has an actual satellite view of your area as well as forecast.
do any of these work for Australia though? From what I have seen so far, they all work for the US or Europe and it's tough luck for anyone else, which is rather annoying...
the m51 was my first deep sky photo and I'm still amazed at the result I had, greetings
It is truly incredible :)
Do you have any recommendations on awesome space/astronomy books, shows, or documentaries? Thanks!!
Hi there! Ah there are so many. To start, Astrophysics in a Hurry by Neil De Grass Tyson is magical. The Night Sky by Patrick Moore as well. As for shows, Cosmos by Carl Sagan or any documentaries by Brian Cox I would thoroughly recommend. Very informative! Hope that helps.
It helps a ton!! You’re awesome Helena!!
Helena!!! Thanks for the advice!! I figured I would send back a recommendation!! Not sure if you have Netflix.. But if you do.. You should watch “Life in Space” a documentary Directed by Stephen Amezdroz.. It might be on other streaming sites as well.. Its really good and might be intriguing to you as well!! Clear skies ☺️
Wow! Another great job Helena!
Nice job. I love your content. Keep it up.
Glad you enjoy it!
Great job with video and photo of M 51!
Thank you! 🙂
Nice work, Helena!
My favorite galaxy :D
Nice one 👌🔭
Great shot Helena!
Great video - very professional
Thank you very much!
Awesome effort Helena!
