- An excellent morning spent at Cardiff Central station on the South Wales Mainline where we see no end of services from Arriva Trains Wales, Cross Country, Great Western Railway and freight from DB Cargo UK.
Cardiff Central was built in 1850 and was used exclusively by the Great Western Railway when they wee running their trains from the capital into Wales. The station owes its existence to Insambard Kingdom Brunel who managed to divert the river Taff to the West which allowed the area to be to developed for the station to take place. After a long time of not being touched by architects in 1932 and 1934 the station was redesgined into a new stone structure which included an imoressive booking office and waiting area to improve passenger comfort at the station, within the building itself the Great Western Railway had its name carved into the stone which you can still see to this day. The station building has become a grade 2 listed site which means that the main entrance, buildings and platforms cannot be touched by any sort of work unless its to repair where needed. The only work currently taking place is the current electrification of the line.
The station has always had the name Cardiff, this was the original name for the station before being renamed Cardiff General in July 1924 and finally Cardiff Central in May 1973.
There was another station here called Cardiff Riverside station which served the Riverside railway, this was integrated into Cardiff Central in 1940, but the platforms were closed to passenger usage in the late 1960's.
My next station is going to be Newport.
You can now find me on Facebook through the group Tornado922, there you will find regular updates, videos and photos from all of my goings on throughout 2018.
I apologise for the total butchering of the pronunciations of the Welsh stations mentioned throughout the video.
The mix of class 66s are an absolutely stunning variety of liveries: EWS,EWS with DB cargo branding and DB cargo
It was great to see
0:20 a great start with the phrase ''Complete with dead pigeon''
Mr Aiq lol
Bargooed hahahaha. I came here for the laughs I wasn't disappointed.
Well that was the aim of the game. Whether it was accidental or deliberate
Another great video don't know why but when u started the video and said "here's 43002 complete with dead pigeon" it just made me chuckle alot lol oh well I'm just weird
Thanks very much mate I'm glad you liked the film, well I thought to myself who else would start off a film by introducing a HST complete with feathered features haha
Great start to the great western mainline series and funny seeing a brewery in Cardiff go there and get a beer
Thanks very much I'm glad you liked the film, I may have been tempted to have a cheeky beer
Great video my friend glad you enjoyed Cardiff
Thanks very much for saying so, it was an amazing station
Such a nice vibe to watch on a Sunday, thanks a mint! B.P.
You're more than welcome, I'm glad you found this enjoyable
Another very enjoyable video. 175116 was probably heading to either Holyhead or Manchester Piccadilly. Their main routes are the Welsh Marches line and the North Wales Coast.
Thanks very much for saying so and thank you for the information regarding the available routes that those units take
The City line is basically the service to Cardiff Bay. Cause it's only a small service so it goes by 'City Line'
Great video as usual.
What a beautiful sight a pacer at cardiff WOOHOOOOOOOOO.
T.T.P.F.
Thanks very much mate I'm glad you enjoyed this, and naturally the pacers would be the stars of the show ;)
wonderful shot of that atw class 158 nice video subbed and liked
Thank you kindly
Rip pigeon. Fantastic video
He lead a good life!! Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed it
City Line is the Coryton - Radyr via Cardiff route.
Righteo thanks for letting me know
South West Trainspotting o
The class 175's are normally used on Manchester and Hollyhead service tho I have seen a class 150 on a Manchester service from time to time. The Gent that was in the shot was Steve. Now the 153312 if you notice was un branded as Arriva Trains Wales had lost the franchise. You were lucky to see that convoy as there been a 1 or 3 run though Cardiff Central to Eastleigh. You did very well indeed and your more welcome to visit Cardiff Central soon. James Joseph JJ Dyer Ps. if your on facebook then check out my pics or photos whichever you prefer thank you.
I've seen the 175's at Manchester a couple of times running to Carmarthen from time to time,. more so when I've been to Crewe. But this was a great station to come to and once I sought out my pronunciation I'm sure I will be making a return!! Hopefully with more freight to be seen and perhaps the running of the next convoy. I had seen several units that day that were in the stage of being de-branded. I shall have a look at your photos when I get the opportunity :)
Nice video and looking forward for the next video
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed this
Awesome video mate, poor pigeon :(
Thanks very much mate, my thoughts go out to the pigeons family
nice station I would love go to South Wales 1day
Michael Pierce it's nice :)
I highly recommend it
Fantastic video!
Thanks very much!!
cityline is Coryton to radyr via ninian park, Also Merthyr Tydil is prenounced as Merthyr the y is silenced and tydfil the y is i as in tid. i should know born and bread in the area.
Thanks very much for the information it is greatly appreciated, and thanks for the guide as to how to pronounce some of the towns. However I feel that when I do come back here I will still fluff up some of the pronunciations haha
You should do the rest of the stations in Wales
Probably not
Great video mate. Haha 43002 complete with a dead pigeon lol
Best way to start to the film haha
Tornado922 haha
very awesome video jarred hope your videos goes well
Thanks very much for saying so
City line links outskirts and stations between..bit like rail taxi Arriva need clean and oil those brakes lol
Love your videos
Thanks very much for saying so
I work for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York. We operate the Subways surface trains and the buses in England I noticed you have one Agency for the rails but all these companies for the trains how do you keep it straight with the schedules ?
It really all comes down to getting the timetables correct. As long the trains run on time and to the schedule that they have been given then usually the system runs without much real issue
half the time they dont lol
Another fantastic video here Tornado922 :)
Thanks very much :)
Love your video keep up to work
Thanks very much
No matter where you go Jarred you can't seem to get away from those Hideous and Horrid Pacers but another fantastic clip nonetheless my condolences to the Pigeon on Sir Kenneth Grange
They just cant get enough of being around me haha, my thoughts go out to the family of the pigeon, it lead a good life
Hey Tornado, I’ve seen some comments and I think there is a setting somewhere, where you can block spammed capital letters. I’m not 100% sure though. Have a nice day
I have seen that setting before but I cant remember where it was haha
Tornado I am loving your comebacks to the comments of firsts 😂
And good video btw
I'm glad you found the video and the comebacks enjoyable :)
Should do a trackside video at Boston level crossing just outside of Newport majority of these trains at speed there
I've already filmed Newport I'm afraid. I filmed it on the same day. But I will look into this next time I'm in wales
The 800`s look great.
I jumpedn the gun a little bit i should have said PACERS at cardiff WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO,yep i filled my boots lol
The 800's definitely look sharp although in saying that they do loo rather out of place given the age of the rolling stock around them
Don't worry about pronouncing Welsh names wrong, if it makes you feel any better, I've been in Wales a while now and have made quite a big hash of it. 😂
I think I did Wales proud by murdering their town names haha, you cant expect an Englishman to pronounce welsh words correctly. It's just rude haha
Tornado922 ATOS Anne?
J p b Dude well Anne Jermy is an EnglishWOMAN but yeah lol
The 153 does the Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay route via Cardiff Central
Thanks for that
800s sound nice and accelerate well on diesel cos their turbo diesel engines are 21-litre V12s and are technically made by Rolls-Royce :) (MTU is a division of Rolls-Royce)
The City Line is a commuter railway line in Cardiff that runs between Radyr and Cardiff Central via Fairwater.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated
Great video when's the next at Leamington spa
Thanks very much, I wont be going to Leamington Spa until I have finished my GWML series
Nice one :) the pronunciations are Bargoed = Bargoid myrthyr Tydfil = merfer tidfill Treherbert = tr hebert Radyr = rader said like ladder but rad :) Coryton = Cory ton you got the rest right :)
I never had a snowball in hells chance of getting those names right haha, but thanks for breaking them down for me. Definitely useful :)
Hehe, you were there the same day I was, but about your "interesting" pronunciations!
The DB Cargo UK 66 at the start was heading to Llanwern, pronounced (hard ch) chlan-wern
Valley termini:
Bargoed = BAR-GOYD
Aberdare you got spot on
Treherbert = tri-HUR-burt
Rhymney = RUMM-nee
Merthyr Tydfil = MURR-thur TID-ful
Barry Island, Penarth and Bridgend are self explanatory, lol
The city line is Radyr - Coryton going via Heath Low Level, Cardiff Queen Street, Cardiff Central and the stations along by Waun-gron Park, the pronunciation or Radyr is "RAD-ur" and Coryton is "CORRIH-tun"
Maybe next time you come to Wales you'll get them right, haha ;)
Thanks for breaking down the names of the stations I got wrong, I'm sure I will put it to good use next time. Although I'm sure I will still butcher the names ;)
Thank you Loui I hopefully I won’t butcher names too
Louiitrains don't forget Waun is pronounced like wine :)
Great vid
Thanks very much
lol merthyr tydfil or merther tidfill and Bargoed bar -goyd oe is pronounced oy....LL as in Llanelli is pronounced ch lan ech li just to help you a little tree herbert the Bargoed treherbet line is a nice day out...stop for few pints then back on last train...
You do realise that by the time I come back here my pronunciations will get ten times worse haha
3:20 Why would Arriva Trains Wales run a 158 between Newport and Cardiff, it's one stop and plenty of trains go between the 2 stations anyway!
I guess it just depends on what stock is available
Great video and when is the q&a video
When he releases it, be patient.
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed it, my Q&A will be filmed and uploaded over the course of this weekend
Great video
Thanks very much
Nice one
Thanks very much
Who had an idea like the pacer the seats aren't comfy and they just look UGLY they pass my house, good thing northern is on strike i hate hearing that screech fly past while I'm sleeping
My guess this is the start of the great western series
Yes it is
I think trains run to Portsmouth from Cardiff central
I think they do, but I cant remember the frequency
'Complete with a dead pigeon'
Poor pigeon :(
Do all classes of Arriva Trains Wales go to Cardiff Central?
Jon Moore yes
what he said ^_^
Yayyy finally got masteg right 👍
Only took me a thousand attempts haha
XD
Do this mer-ther-tid-fil now put it all together
bargoed is bar-g-oi-d, aberdaer was correct, merthyr tydfil is murthur tid-vul, tredegar is tread-eager, maesteg was correct and so was coryton
Well I'm steadily getting there then haha, thanks for letting me know about the pronunciations
It’s #trainbow for Pride
I know.
What happen to class 150280 why you say oh dear?
I can't remember
he said it cause it was hard to say merthyr tydfil for him
Just want to say sorry to those that got involved in that silly argument this user started especially tornado922. My brother will not use it again.
Ah, the classic excuse "my brother". Anyway, at least you apologised.
iAspex That’s how he got banned himself ha, have a good day
RIP pigeon at the start
It lead a good life
bargoed you said it wrong lol
EWS stands for England 🏴 wales 🏴 Scotland 🏴
Rhys Roberts isn't it English Welsh and Scottish...?
Are the 800s made in Japan
yes
The first few were assembled and shipped over however the others are being built in Newton Aycliffe
Tornado922 oh ok thanks for the info. Great video by the way i been there lots and Newport cause i life in Llanelli just west of Swansea so not far to come to Cardiff and Newport
For the 800s: Body shells - Japan, final assembly - England from as many locally sourced components as possible. The 802s on the other hand are assembled in Italy form the imported Japanese body shells. The new CAF Newport factory is also only an assembly plant, so the trains coming out of that factory will be "assembled" in Wales from body shells shipped from Spain.
When u come to Germany?
Sounds like he thinks he's already in Germany pronouncing Llanwern with a v haha. You're in wales mate say it how ya see it.
I don't know when I'll be coming to Germany, I will be going at some stage but I can't say when, I knew when I got into Wales the pronunciation butchering would be a plenty
Don't worry about the pronunciation it's hard to pronounce some of them :)
Near dam impossible for me haha
The 150 for me
tornado I know what train you want to be on the 142
I almost found that funny
Keiran Clarke it's a joke. He knows how much I hate them
Right seriously just stop. Every single video that contains a 142 or similar unit and someone happens to post something about them you always put stupid little remarks. Now they aren't my favourite units and I make it known that I don't like them but I always have a laugh with other people regarding them, whether they like them or not, it's their choice. Some people may not like units that I like but that's life. You need to realise that people read these comments and may feel that they are directed towards them which then comes back on you and ultimately through me as I see every comment that goes on my films. Now I have been more than lenient with you in regards to the comments that you post but you really do need to reign it in from now on. I'm happy for you to continue to comment on my channel however I will ask that you refrain from posting in capital letters as it's deemed as shouting and directing your comments towards other people. I have seen the comments you have made to a few people and I have subsequently deleted them as quite frankly you're rude. Have a good day.
tornado did u say there was going to be a new company taking over
The Arriva Trains Wales Franchise, yes there will be a new company taking over later this year. You can see the branding already being removed from the various units
0:20 OOOOH FANCY
I do try!
So that’s why he was in OOC cause he hit a Pigeon ok I think Sir Kenneth Grange is out of OOC now
If a train hits a pigeon it doesn't render the train out of action.
So why was he at OOC then
Well probably for routine maintenance. You're not gonna burn fuel just to clean out a pigeon. Use some common sense here
Sorry the OOC crew didn’t say why he was at OOC all they said he was sunbathing
All they said was look whose in for a break
The 175 so not run to Barry only the 150s and 140s do
u mean 142s and 143s not 140s
There could've been every possibility that I got it wrong here ;)
they only use the barry line with GWR if the main line between cardiff to bridgend line is shut
Sion's Train Videos yeah lol there was only 1 Class 140 Pacer, only in British Rail service from 1981-1982
try saying the names this way treherbert=tree..her..bert lol
That would make things far to easy haha
Never mind Welsh, you can’t even pronounce pronunciation correctly :-P
Nice up to date video of Cardiff Central by the way :)
class 800s look horrible the seats are very uncomfortable the only good about them is the acceleration and the fastest they have gone is 140mph and the fastest the Class 43 HST has gone is 148mph the HSTs are way better and the first class in them is really comfortable
Lloyd Gyesi class 800s are extremely comfortable in my opinion. It depends what seats you like. I also like the looks of the 800. But i agree HST'S are better in some ways, 800s are bi modal though. I'm equal, i like both!
the only thing I like about the class 800 is the acceleration and the brakes sound horrific
What does being able to go 148 mph have anything to do with how good they are if the max is 125 on conventional lines?
there faster and there nice trains and really comfortable and 148mph is speed the record for hst
Lloyd Gyesi Well the 800 does have max 100 mph on diesel last time I checked.
mae is pronounced my..ie maesteg mys...teg
Thanks for the info
Hi there tornado 922 it's Louis Graham. I'm back can you please do a shout out to Louis Graham I have just subscribed today as well and I only got 2 subscribes in your next videos I would like some tones and waves of the drivers
I don't do shout outs I'm afraid but all I will do is put a link to your channel in my next description and let people go to your channel from there.
Wales vs Scoooootlannnd
WestMidlandTrainspotting Scoooootland foreever
Scotland has more variety in trains and transport generally
First
ONYX.G that really doesn't interest me.
Tornado922 haha
Tornado922 sorry mate, good video. Have u seen the new livery for the Virgin trains class 390 and if so what are your thoughts?
You don't need to apologise but I appreciate it all the same, yes I've seen the new liveries on the 390 units and they do look good. It suits them rather well.
Coryton to radyr and radyr to coryton
Fabulous video!
Thanks very much
