Hello Everyone! Two corrections I wanted to make here, 1 - DVD came out in 1997, not 1998 (I don't know how I was that stupid) 2 - The UK had releases before Lost at Sea, and like the American ones, they only had 5 episodes each initially.
Being born in 2002, I got to grow up in a strange golden era in the mid-to-late 2000s where I had VHS tapes and DVDs in the same household. Never had any of the SpongeBob ones (I had a ton of SB DVDs though), but I did watch a lot of Bob the Builder, Dora and Blue’s Room on tape. Those were good times.
Ahoyhoy There, Fellow RUclipsrino! A fun fact for either the Sea Stories or the Nautical Nonsense VHS; on the Episode "Something Smells," there's a spot on the audio when Sponge says hi to the Building, he then says "I Just don't get it!" This audio is looped twice and there's a missing piece of audio just before. If you watched it with VCR Captions, the captions are also not in synch. This occurs on all copies of this tape and I think it's the only SBSP VHS with permanent errors.
Having been born in 1988, all we had was VHS until around ‘99. VHS didn’t seem to fully phase out until around 2004 in stores. I continued using tapes until around 2009 since not all movies had been released on DVD yet. Got my first HDDVD in 2007 and Blu Ray in 2008. Still have a Sony VCR and some tapes to this day.
Wow, that clip of the kids running through that maze with the weird music in the background unlocked a dormant memory in my mind. It took me back to when i watched a spongebob vhs on the tiny crt tv with a built in VHS player in my dad's old Nissan Quest. 😢 good times
At a time where we've got 12+ seasons of Spongebob and spinoffs available for a monthly fee on Paramount+, it's so interesting to look back at how the show was offered on home media during the show's early years. Thanks for making this!
I see the SpongeBob DVDs sometimes at local thrift stores, so now I have Sponge for Hire, Nautical Nonsense/Sponge Buddies, The Movie, Tales from the Deep, Ghouls Fools, SpongeBob vs The Big One, The one with the pilot and Truth or Square, the Nickelodeon Triple Pack, and a Season 5 DVD, all of which I paid less than $5 for at various stores and garage sales. I also have the Halloween one on VHS which was a huge part of my childhood. Not a huge collection yet, but I am still looking. Great video, underrated channel as well!
I remember during a computer lab class in first grade, we had to watch the episode “Tea at the Treedome”, and I distinctly remembered the VHS cover being the Deep-Sea Sillies one. So, technically the first time I watched the show was on one of these VHS tapes.
SpongeBob premiered when my mom was 13 and she instantly became a lifelong fan. So as you’d think, she just had to get me in on the action as well when I was born in 2003. We’ve watched every episode together (we still do), we saw the first movie in theaters despite me just being a year old, she couldn’t stop buying SpongeBob merchandise for me (I had the whole freaking bed set!), and of course, she bought so many of the DVDs and VHS tapes that it was hard to keep up with. My dad literally had to hold both her arms and say “baby, this needs to stop” 😂😂 some of the best childhood memories I’ve ever had. I’m really glad to be a SpongeBob fan.
Having being interested in sb VHS tapes for awhile, so heres a few facts you may not know - The Sea Stories dvd and vhs have different versions of shanghaied, dvd versions are the cartoon only, the VHS versions include the patchy segments. But only the short version, as to make sure the episode wasnt too short or too long - The Sponge for Hire vhs was also a little weird, the episode the started the vhs, KK Training video, didnt have the SB opening but ended with its own special credits, being followed by Can you spare a dime which had the SB Theme, this was probably done to make the episode feel like more of an actual training video. -the reason that season 4 vhs tapes are a little shorter than the other vhs tapes is because the regular tapes are usually filled with random eps and with usual every one comes with their individual credits, but with the season 4 vhs tapes the season 4 episodes usually on Lost in time, wheres gary, and the first 2 eps of fear of a kb, are usually done in order with the credits having 1 separate credits sequence used to represent a double length or a brother and sister ep as usual instead of a seperate sequence per 11 min segment as a result, the vhs were 58 min instead of 60-62 minutes - Ugh was longer on vhs and dvd than on season dvd, the season dvd was 20 min and 55 sec without theme, whilst the vhs and dvd version was about 30 seconds longer because a patchy going to commercial scene was included.
it should be noted that Nickelodeon had VHS releases prior. They had a few releases from a third party in the late 80s before they struck a distribution deal with Sony Wonder in the 90s, which lasted until 1996, with Paramount taking over after
I was actually aware of that before. It just didn't come up Naturally in the Commentary. If I ever do a video about Nickelodeon VHS in general, I'll have to talk about that. I always found Sony Wonder brand really interesting.
The UK had SpongeBob VHS that went up until SpongeGuard On Duty. SpongeBob goes Prehistoric, The Seascape Capers, SpongeGuard On Duty, Lost At Sea, Tide and Seek and Tales From The Deep had the same amount of episodes as their DVD counterparts instead of 5 episodes that are on the US VHSs. Tide and Seek, Lost At Sea and Tales From The Deep were only in the UK as VHSs
Tales from the Deep was the first DVD I remember owning. I want to say the then "Never Before Seen Episode" (I had an Accident) was a selling feature. Or maybe I just remember first seeing it on the DVD.
I grew up with Deep Sea Sillies at my grandma’s house, so I have a HUGE nostalgia bias towards it, especially the opening. And recently in April I collected all of the VHS tapes from eBay, minus Undersea Antics because that’s just a combination of the first two tapes.
6:12 holy shit I actually REMEMBER this. My dad always had plenty of VHS tapes when I was growing up and I for sure had some SpongeBob ones. I never realized how weird that part of the video actually was until now
Fun fact, albeit one I assume most people know, the version of "Just One Bite" included on here and in all home media releases that includes the episode is that of the Edited Version... I don't feel the need to go into detail as to why the unedited version has never been officially released, because if you know, you know.
6:13 literally frame 1 one when you showed I instantly remembered this nick intro thing. I remember as a kid wishing i was the kids in the maze because ive never been in a hedge maze before
6:12 I know that many people see this bumper as being weird or creepy, but I look at it as a total celebration of the Y2K aesthetic and a positive look at the future. I just wish that they did more with this than just a one minute bumper. Like they put the time and effort into creating this world of nature with its own unique aesthetic and music, but this is all we got. And it's a completely mystery as to who directed it or who any of the crew were. It's a shame, really.
In all honesty I don't think it's that weird or Creepy. And I definitely think it looks pretty cool for the Time. And the aesthetic is something I can't even quite put my Finger on. It almost has a Liminal Space feel to it. Which might contribute to the Creepiness that might be felt here. I guess non of us knowing who made, adds to this. It's like reverse lost media.
@@Pandosyanna The special effects are amazing for the time, especially for just a short bumper. It does remind me of a lot of liminal spaces, which I actually kinda like. While some of them are definitely creepy, I actually find most to be relaxing. Maybe it's because I'm generally not a social person and like being alone, but there's something oddly comforting about liminal spaces to me. And this is no exception. I really hope that we find out who made the bumper because I would love to know the design process and inspirations for it. Because while the 90's VHS bumper was basically a combination of all the most popular Nick bumpers, this 2000's one is entirely unlike anything before (or even after) it.
Nautical nonsense, sponge buddies and spongebob Halloween unlocked a core memory for me. I used to watch those religiously at my grandma’s house when I was a kid.

I like this video, but in some parts you talk fast that it kinda sounds like mumbling and the volume is distorted. You need to turn down the microphone’s audio to prevent this.
Remember getting a few for Christmas when I was real little watched them to death would look for some whenever going to the video store or VHS tapes section of whatever mall I went to back up the day same with power rangers dbz and batman 😊😊
I actually had the DVD version of sponge for hire am I copy sounds like day lazily ripta from a VHS tape I don't know if I bought a bootleg by mistake or there's something more to that
oh and 10:18 we did get nautical nonsense and spongebuddies i believe. i literally just looked on ebay for spongebob uk tapes and the only real result was one of nautical nonsense. its probably not documented because the uk tapes seem to be very scarce
That promo with the maze was pretty cool, however the design of the maze itself is so unfitting for the direction and tone, it should have looked more bright and colorful instead of being made out of stone.
I think they were going for more of a hedge maze look, but it does look very flat and I can see why it would be unsettling. Maybe for budget reasons, they just couldn't make it look the way they wanted to. I tried doing a sketch of a different interpretation to see if it would work better, though I think mine is a little too busy. media/discordapp/net/attachments/455508997164761098/1156873930993324032/maze_concept.png (The slashes after "media" and "discordapp" are meant to be replaced with periods.)
I was born in the late 90s and had most of these tapes. I just went on eBay to see if buying the rest new was an option and uh... $75 for a VHS in 2023 ain't happening lol
In future vids maybe slow down and enunciate a bit more. You’re going so fast and I am struggling to understand you around 12:00 (also then you wouldn’t be gasping for breath)

Yeah, I'm not actually sure. I know they had a Spongebuddies (just Spongebuddies) DVD release in 2005. They probably did, they just aren't documented.
I like this video, but in some parts you talk fast that it kinda sounds like mumbling and the volume is distorted. You need to turn down the microphone’s audio to prevent this.
Remember getting a few for Christmas when I was real little watched them to death would look for some whenever going to the video store or VHS tapes section of whatever mall I went to back up the day same with power rangers dbz and batman 😊😊
this video was made for me
6:10 what did u search for to find this?
I actually had the DVD version of sponge for hire am I copy sounds like day lazily ripta from a VHS tape I don't know if I bought a bootleg by mistake or there's something more to that
Ahoyhoy There , the image of SBSP on the skateboard was also used in a Spongebob Memory Game. I DK what year
That's interesting. The Render almost feels something they would have used in one of those old Tony Hawk Rip-offs.
4:21 plankton says it in the fun episode so i think that's where it came from
oh and 10:18 we did get nautical nonsense and spongebuddies i believe. i literally just looked on ebay for spongebob uk tapes and the only real result was one of nautical nonsense. its probably not documented because the uk tapes seem to be very scarce
Who yeah they use same music for some old Lego spongebob video of soccer with Star Wars
You gotta love VHS
That promo with the maze was pretty cool, however the design of the maze itself is so unfitting for the direction and tone, it should have looked more bright and colorful instead of being made out of stone.
I think they were going for more of a hedge maze look, but it does look very flat and I can see why it would be unsettling. Maybe for budget reasons, they just couldn't make it look the way they wanted to. I tried doing a sketch of a different interpretation to see if it would work better, though I think mine is a little too busy.

You forgot Nickelodeon SuperToons and Nickstravaganza?!
8:05 your wording 😂
Loved this video!! You should follow it up with the Spongebob DVDs, this is a pretty intetesting topic >:D
It's Coming soon!
I was born in the late 90s and had most of these tapes. I just went on eBay to see if buying the rest new was an option and uh... $75 for a VHS in 2023 ain't happening lol
Ive got a second generation copy of Best of Nicktoons 1998
Then Release it
6:11 is something i first saw on a Rugrats tape i found at a garage sale in 2019 and it felt like a fever dream
