As stated in the video, this is an overview of all the US releases of the mainline Star Wars films on VHS. Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith was never released here on VHS in America. There is a PAL version released in limited qualities in places like the UK. Those will not work on an NTSC VCR. There is also a South Korean VHS release of Revenge of the Sith that actually is NTSC. But once again, here in America we never got an official release of Revenge of the Sith on VHS.
I was pretty annoyed that Revenge of the Sith wasn't released on VHS. I had all the other movies on VHS and the boxes all matched perfectly. VHS was still pretty mainstream in 2005 when Revenge of the Sith was released on home media, so it's not like he would have had to make a special "legacy edition" or something.
So at some point in the mid 90's they did a tv broadcast of Star Wars for three nights, hosted by Carrie Fisher. This was the first time I had watched the movies in full, it was a nightly thing with me and my dad. We recorded them to vhs and still have them. Need to see how much of the Carrie Fisher stuff is still there.
Not the same thing, but they took the concept art from ROTJ of Luke in Jabbas palace and used it in a new episode of boba fett. The only difference is they took out Luke being in it because in-universe it’s a painting hung up in Jabbas palace, meant to honor him, so of course they wouldn’t put the dude who would come blow up and kill him lol The painting is in the scene where the Vespas are chasing the mayor around Mos eisley and one of the vesper drivers runs through it
I still have my childhood Star Wars VHS tapes. Episode 1 (2 copies), Episode 2 and the 1997 Special Editions of the OT. I can't watch them anymore, but I'm not getting rid of them. So many memories held in those tapes.
I had the honor of watching the original version of Empire Strikes Back in theaters as a celebration of the 40th anniversary, and it is easily the definitive edition.
Empire didn’t get hit too hard by the special editions. The only one that I think truly suffered was ROTJ. ANH was passable, even if there’s a couple ugly cgi creatures, the Jabba scene, and I’ve seen 1 or 2 people argue about who shot first
@@andyn46 I finally saw the unaltered original cut. Bar shoot out was done in close ups with a big flash. I like the wide shot better. CGI was ridiculous but so were the models.
I still try to actively record on VHS. I got most of the clone wars and Rebels on tape cause my family just never really fell out of that type of media. I just found out how to get cable in my college dorm room and am so happy to record movies like solo on tape and loved your video!
My first exposure to Star Wars was the 1995 release of the original trilogy on VHS at blockbuster. I walked through the aisles at 6 years old and saw these three films. Something about Vader caught my attention so I just grabbed be and my dad rented it for me. And after watching it that night I became a fanatic. The next week I rented empire strikes back and the following week I rented return of the Jedi. I didn’t purchase the 1995 VHS versions unfortunately. It wasn’t until the special edition versions came out when I got original trilogy on VHS (gold version). I got use to the special edition ones so I accepted them as they were.
I have the 1995 box set with a new hope the empire strikes back and return of the jedi I got them from my dad I also have the box that holds all 3 tapes
I too am autistic. Nice to meet a fellow neurodivergent kinfolk on the internet. and yeah, can confirm, this is indeed quality soul soothing random tidbits of star wars curiosities.
The first release of A New Hope on VHS was in fact the Rental copy seen in this video. It later got a retail release that same year. Then in 1983, it got reissued with the CBS/Fox Video logo on the box instead of "20th Century Fox Video" (which merged with CBS Video Enterprises the year prior, and created said venture), but the contents were exactly the same. A year later in 1984, it got yet another reissue, this time in a standard slipcase (rather than the "drawer case"), to match The Empire Strikes Back which came out that year on VHS. In 1986, around the time Return of the Jedi came to VHS, they released a version of A New Hope that looks just like the 1984 copy, but has a new remastered soundtrack restoring C3PO's missing tractor beam line. The way to tell the difference between a 1984 copy and a 1986 copy is to see if the red "Hi-Fi Stereo" triangle says "digitally mastered" or not.
I have 2 VHS copies of Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, both from 1995. Also, there was actually a VHS copy of Revenge Of The Sith, but it was exclusive to PAL territories, and just to add insult to injury, THX made a special Science Of Sensation trailer only for that release.
I literally jumped out of my seat and yelled “HOKY SHIT I REMEMBER TIMOTHY THE TOOTH!!!!”, having completely forgotten about it for Le last 15 years or so of my life
The black and white VHS sleeves mirrored Lukes conflict between the dark and light, ultimately siding on the light. Same as his black outfit in return, that late in the movie is show to have a white inner lining. Luke was shrouded by the darkness until that moment, and his strength was enough to turn Vader back to the light. That imagery was the best Star Wars has done in terms of "show and don't tell" movie making, something that is long lost in movies today.
The saddest part about not becoming a Star Wars fan till 2001, means I have never ever seen the original, non-special editions. First VHS' I owned was the 2000 black and white cover versions. I am so bummed that I never got a chance to see the first (best) Star Wars trilogy in its original state. Siiigh.
Grabbed the 1990 ESB VHS at a thrift store the other day and I had to see if it was the original or first special edition. Happy to see it’s the original from this vid. Two down (have the New Hope 2006 dvd with the original), one to go
Great Video, would just like to mention 2 things: -You forgot the 1995 Overseas release which had a different cover, but I don’t really mind as they are practically the same release just with different box art -Revenge of the Sith actually did get a VHS release, however if I can recall, it was only available in video rental stores. It even had the matching black spine to fit with the Prequels and Originals
The Phantom Menace VHS has the theatrical cut of the film while the DVD and all subsequent releases use an extended cut of the film. The changes are an extension of the pod race’s second lap-which added one of anakin’s engines getting uncoupled from the pod, and a hovertaxi scene on coruscant.
YES! I was waiting for the massive Episode I box that I got for Christmas 1999. My filmstrip appeared to be during a fight somewhere around the Naboo palace, with Qui-Gon in the foreground and some laser impact sparking behind him. It really was a fantastic presentation. My first exposure was the CBS/FOX 80s versions, then bought the remastered originals. The summer of 1997 was all about me saving up while mowing lawns with my father to buy the Widescreen Edition of the SE trilogy. My favorite collection remains the 1995 remastered originals with the mini-docs beforehand that said how they'd fixed some effects and sounds

VHS tapes are still around, which is pretty rare, since more VHS tapes are not being made by any company whatsoever. But yeah, that's all I have to say about this update on VHSs.
Mexico carried VHS for a solid while after the format discontinuing. I bought spiderman 2 and some others at the time but for whatever reason I didn't get Revenge when it came out. Now it's kind of expensive and rare ...
I'm just old enough to remember that "One last time" trailer. From then on out, it was all about the special edition. I had no idea fans were dissatisfied with any of the changes made 'til at least the early-00s. Prbly because I wasn't chronically online back then.
People owned VCRs in the early 80s. Although, due to the very high price (around $1500 in today’s dollars), a lot of people got their VCRs rent-to-own. And stores frequently sold rental copies of movies after a few months when they needed to make shelf space. It was also perfectly legal since the store had already paid Fox for that copy, so they could do whatever they wanted with it.
Hey man I wanted to say that I've seen all your videos and this one is my favorite and I want you to keep going when your sub and view counts may be lower than you'd like that it's ok to be a smaller content creator and you're pretty damn funny cheers to more great content.
Thank you for checking my stuff out! I like doing these videos for fun, and trust me, it blows my mind that this video has as many views as it does. Every sub and comment is a very sweet bonus
Jesus Christ this video was just beyond amazing! I thought it had a couple of thousand likes, but then I saw it only had a couple of hundred views in total!
Something interesting about episode 1, like the original trilogy George couldn't keep his hands outbof the editing room and the DVD release actually has an additional bit in the podrace scene not found in the theatrical or VHS version. Then for the bluray he removed muppet yoda and replaced him with the CGI yoda from episode 2 and 3. The VHS is the only way to watch episode 1 as it was originally presented, and that's why I own 7 copies of it on VHS, because like the OT fans, I refuse to watch the special edition of episode 1.
I remember my parents getting me that original 1982 Video Rental tape in it's hard plastic case when I was 9. They had to bribe the guy at the video store for it with $75. I still have it with the case. Sure wish I had a VCR and a tube TV to watch it on!!
Dude, your content is awesome your Patreon and sponsorship joke cracked me up. Imo that is a fine way to ask for a donation. Keep it up and wish you the best of success!
There actually WAS a box set version in 1990, and it looked similar to the 1992 one. The tapes themselves in 1992 (the ones you have) had the titles repositioned on the covers, the character profiles were removed, the back artwork was different, and the "CBS/Fox Video" logo on the packaging was replaced with just "Fox Video". I'm not sure the video/audio is the same on the 1986, 1990, and 1992 versions or not. There was also a Letterbox VHS set in 1992 which had tapes with the same covers inside, with masters sourced from the 1989/1990 "Special Widescreen Edition" LaserDisc releases. Also, the 1995 & 2000 sets also got Widescreen counterparts. And the original 1997 set, in addition to a standard Widescreen package, also had a Collector's Gift Set with a bunch of extra swag.
I live in New Zealand and we got a VHS copy of ROTS in 2005! In the classic plastic clamshell case. I always thought it was one of the last films to be released on that format
Episode One was also released on laserdisc, but only in Japan. The documentary on the widescreen collectors vhs appears to be exclusive to that set as side 4 of the Japanese LD was left unused. Would have been a perfect opportunity to include the bonus video and trailers. A lot of people reportedly imported it from Japan anyways.
Third vid I'm watching from you, and I already love you, god damn, I love how you catch me off guard with some jokes, I never in my life donated to a youtuber but I think you definitely deserve it. I have the feeling you are about to sky rocket in a few hours and hope you do Best wishes and be safe

Great video, I have the re release of the original trilogy special editions. Dad found it at a garage sale for $5. Wish I episode 3 had a vhs sleeve like the others so I would have a reason to have the prequels on vhs so the spines would look awesome!
I am forever salty that they specifically reprinted the special editions to have the spines like the Episode 1 and 2 VHS releases yet they decided not to release ROTS
@@YungJunko you should do a video regarding the Friday the 13th VHS tapes. The spines on those look sooo great. Would be an awesome video to see from you with your humor, +1 subscriber
6:58 I can’t help but think Darth Vader would make more sense being on The Empire Strikes Back than a random Stormtrooper, considering how he’s the most prominent in those movies. If anything, the New Hope and Empire covers should be switched around. Yoda also makes WAY more sense for The Empire Strikes back, considering how he does so much more there. If it were up to me, I’d have the covers all show the main villain of each movie. New Hope: Tarkin, Empire: Vader, Jedi: the Emperor.
Lucas wanted home video releases to feel like an event, and didn’t want to put Star Wars out on a medium that wouldn’t last. Funny that DVD wasn’t considered a sure bet in 2000.
I love how the RotS VHS is so rare that most people from the US (where it didn't came out) aren't even aware of its excistance. Can't blame anyone tho. Its a rare piece to find even in the countries that did get one. I was lucky to find a used copy for 140 bucks on ebay which is only one third of the average price for this tape....
If you want the best quality copy of the original trilogy pre special editions, get the laserdisc box set. Super clean, and exclusive bonus documentary and book!
I've been collecting star wars VHS tapes and I have the second VHS boxset release as well as the phantom menace. I'd love to get my hands on that first VHS boxset just for the artwork alone.
I grew up with having the 1995 box set, it wasn’t until a couple years ago I found that box set, and the special edition set too so I had to get them. But now I want to find the old ones
Great video! The one thing missing was a review of video quality and contents, specifically with the early VHS releases of Star Wars. Did the rental copy have any trailers or anything? Was there much difference between the first commercially-available releases of the trilogy (84-86) vs. the later release (90-92)? Or did they essentially look the same?
5:10 I own all 3 of these, but my copy of the original movie (A New Hope) has the Star Wars logo on the top left instead of the top center as seen at 1:12. Is this some sort of alternate variation of the box art or something? Also this video was very interesting to watch. You earned a sub.
Very keen observation! You're absolutely correct. So I believe when this edition was released in 1990 under CBS Fox Video, the Star Wars logo was in the corner. When it was reprinted in 1992 for the 15th anniversary, I'm pretty sure they dropped the CBS branding and it was just Fox Video and that's the version where the Star Wars logo is centered.
@@YungJunko Ah, that makes sense. These tapes have actually become my favorite way to watch these films since they are mostly untouched. For my ESB tape, the box as well as the tape label has the CBS Fox Video logo. But when I play the tape, it just says Fox Video. Quite bizarre if you ask me.
In Russia, when Revenge of the Sith got released we got the VHS version almost immediately! It was a just a bootleg copy of a DVD release, but they even copied the special edition artwork for the VHS box of thie movie. How crazy is that? Not only that, but the 2000 special edition of the Return of the Jedi we got had the original Anakin actor appear in the end.
Hayden Christensen didn’t get added to Return of the Jedi until the 2004 DVD release anyway so that makes sense that Sebastian Shaw would still appear at the end of the Russian 2000 version.
My dad had the 95 trilogy version. I always felt bad because I lost one of the tapes and let one of the others get destroyed in a VCR that was on the fritz and tore up the tape.
I have the 1995 editions of episodes 4 and 6 so i got to see the original versions but the 1997 special edition of empire strikes back which i found at a swap meet when i was 10. I didn't know about the different versions at the time. Previously we had rented a new hope the special edition at Hollywood video so when i watched the tape i got at the swap meet i was also confused as to why jabba the hutt was missing.

Cool video. I had both the original theatrical version and the special edition version on VHS.
I have the feeling you are about to sky rocket in a few hours and hope you do
Best wishes and be safe
Aaaaand I just realized you actually didn't have patreon and was all a joke 🙃
Hey thank you for all the kind comments. Honestly SUPER flattered to hear that. Seriously I needed that and I hope to keep providing more laughs and entertainment.
@@crimsonstudios680 Interesting idea! I only own the first film on VHS, so I am definitely going to have research the others
Pretty funny video, well done! And man, those black and white covers, just... WHYYYYY?! I will never understand stuff like this.
Really cool video on a topic that I've never really looked into, but interesting nonetheless
I'm very fortunate to own a legitimate Australian vhs of ROTS, it's definitely the jewel in my Star Wars collection
Yungjunko for me is like a good ol bowl of member berries
I wish they would release the originals unedited on blu ray. I wouldn’t even care if they were the laser disc pan and scan version that’s on dvd.
My man threw in a raid ad for free
I recently bought rouge one on vhs and when looking on RUclips for other things like it came across this. Great video 👍
lol you cant just say that with no link bruh
@@YungJunko there was only one listing for it sadly
Timmy the tooth! Hell yeah!
I wish they released the whole saga in 3D at the theatres but sadly they stopped at episode 1. I still have the limited edition cup that came with it
I wish more studios had faith in blu ray 3D. And filming in 3D in general
If you want the best quality copy of the original trilogy pre special editions, get the laserdisc box set. Super clean, and exclusive bonus documentary and book!
An Ebay seller makes a #ligit copy of Episode 3 on vhs. $30, but the collection is now complete....
If what you have told me is true...you will have gained my trust
What a great ass channel. My new favorite seriously:)
Aww thanks Luki!
My childhood was Star Wars movies on VHS (I also had episode 3) and moomins with the original finnish dub on VHS.
That Star Wars episode 1 widescreen special edition that came with the book also has a piece of the film that came with it too.
The special edition box farts when you close it.
Now you need a video on the Laserdisc releases
I'm still pissed that Revenge didn't get put on VHS even though VHS was still very common at the time
I've got the big box OG bois on Laser Disc, they look great on a big chunky CRT TV
Dude thug Junko is the best
Engagement for the algorithm.
I'm old enough to remember VHS.
I had the '95 tapes
In Russia, when Revenge of the Sith got released we got the VHS version almost immediately! It was a just a bootleg copy of a DVD release, but they even copied the special edition artwork for the VHS box of thie movie. How crazy is that?
Not only that, but the 2000 special edition of the Return of the Jedi we got had the original Anakin actor appear in the end.
Hayden Christensen didn’t get added to Return of the Jedi until the 2004 DVD release anyway so that makes sense that Sebastian Shaw would still appear at the end of the Russian 2000 version.
I just had memories flood back of my birthday in 2000 and getting the trilogy ahhaah
My dad had the 95 trilogy version. I always felt bad because I lost one of the tapes and let one of the others get destroyed in a VCR that was on the fritz and tore up the tape.
I have the 1990 CBS trilogy, but the first version of that era without boxset. Found it at a thrift store for 99 cents each😎
You better sell those tapes.
Jabba wants his money now.
There was a Australian VHS release of ROTS. good to be Aussie
I own the last release of the unaltered versions on VHS I also have them when they came to DVD for like the first time in widescreen
Europe and Oceania got RoTS on VHS, but it seems to be rare as rockinghorse shit.
Underrated channel
I like to pretend the phantom menace doesn't exist. On any starwars marathon you can skip this movie and its perfectly ok.
Impressive. But there is one missing. The legendary Hardware Wars...
Dude you're hilarious I've been binging your SW content all night lmfao
I remember there being a box set that was silver, with luke embossed on the front
Today I found a mint CBS FOX Return of the Jedi for 2$... needless to say I bought it 😂🤟
so weird how junko sounds liek a completely different person in his old videos.
Very entertaining
13:16 Did the Beauty and the Beast work in progress get a vhs release? I knew it was on laser but always thought it was exclusive to that format.
