    I'm going to take a few minute to answers some of the most common questions that seem to be asked about this video. First, what does "Hours of Service" mean. Some of my viewers have already answered this question and I thank you for that.....for those that don't read all the comments, basically, a CDL driver on E-logs has a limited daily clock. Once they log in on their electronic log system that clock runs continuously. If a driver is held up for any reason that clock is still ticking away. Once the clock reaches their, typically 14 hour, day, they must shut down or the driver and the company can face large fines. In this instance, I believe the driver was delayed at the shipper, but I could be wrong. Second question, "Why didn't we or the trucking company send another CDL driver to simply drive the truck to a "safe haven"?.....Very valid question. Each company has different policies on this and most of those policies revolve around two things, insurance liability and the E-log system. Some companies are not insured to allow non-company drivers to drive their truck unless there is a contract in place, thus they call a towing company and the towing company's insurance is liable for the truck at that point. The second part of this question is the ability of the E-logs to allow a non-company driver to log in. If it is a non-company driver, the E-log system may not be set up to allow another driver to log in. Also, the E-log system may not allow movement past the daily clock without logging it as a violation of the "Hours of Service", which, again, can be costly to the driver and the company. Again, this varies from company to company and how each has their E-log systems set up. Some do have some "wiggle room" to allow a driver to reach a safe-haven. Next question, "Why do I remove the driveshaft"? Very simple answer, to remove the risk of damaging the transmission while the unit is being towed. And, lastly, several viewers have made mention that the time/date stamp on my new dash cam is incorrect. Actually, they are correct. Most of my videos aren't posted on the same day that they are recorded. It take a lot of time to download, edit, process, and upload the videos. Some of the videos aren't posted for several months for other reasons, so my videos aren't necessarily in chronological order. Thank you to everyone for your comments and your support of this channel. Please remember that this is a family-friendly channel and I ask that you keep your comments/question polite, professional, and family-friendly. Again, thank you to all and God bless.

      Ron, I am curious as to the fee you charge for a tow like that. I know it has to probably be less than any fines or penalties the driver/company might incur.

    Thanks for this post Ron. You are shedding light into a very grey area of the trucking industry, that needs to be addressed. People will call the driver all kinds of names, but what he did here was exactly what he needed to do. More drivers need to stand their ground, & do what they are suppose to do.

      @Tony Ashford I agree that needs to happen, but it never will. When the trucking strike in the 60's happened the trucking industry was mainly small/independent carriers that could afford to do things like this. Now, you have all these big corporate trucking companies that put more people through school than they can keep, and they will never shut down for a strike. You have a a lot drivers now right out of school working for these companies, do you think they're gonna just shut down?

    • @TomBennett1
      @TomBennett1 3 года назад

      @@isallah1kafir196 they really don't distract a driver maybe a rookie who don't know what each one does but to answer your question for the most part the gauges just let's you know what the truck is doing and how it's running. The gauges just let's us know if there is anything going wrong with the truck and if you are a rookie who is getting worked up about a gauge and paying more attention to what that's doing instead of the road is really the only time that it might be a problem but most drivers will pull over at a truck stop or on a off ramp if it's an emergency.

    Hello Ron, I had to make another comment after watching the entire video. I am without a doubt a fan of your videos, but moreover your continuous professionalism in each of them. The respect you not only show clients but for your equipment is awesome. When I ran wreckers in the late 90's and early 2000's there were a lot of operators who I must say were more like drivers that did not respect the equipment, used certain equipment not for it's intended reasons, yes I know sometimes we must improvise but NOT at risk of the safety to ourselves and our equipment. While I never owned my own wrecker business I treated every truck I drove like it was my own, and I learned how it worked. The object is to work smarter not harder, and I'm sure you would agree a true operator knows how to make the truck do 90% of the work as it is intended to do. Towing & Recovery is the same as trucking and hauling, What you do is not your job, it's not your career it's your lifestyle and you either love it or you don't there are no in between's . I must thank you again for posting these videos, as a former wrecker operator each time I watch I feel as if I'm right there in the driver's seat running to the call. I miss it tremendously but thanks to you I can relive it each day. God Bless Always Ron. Remember to stay safe, be courteous to all, and keep the shiny side up. Take Care Ron. God Bless.

    e-logs. Another reason I like doing drive-away. We are, for the time being at least, exempt from them.
    If they bothered to do some fact finding in real life, they would find that the hours of service laws are just as capable of forcing a driver to drive when he should be catching a nap, and forcing one to sit when they are slept out and unable to sleep anymore. In essence, they are causing the very situations they are trying to prevent.

    The hours-of-service regulations focus on when and how long you are allowed to drive by placing
    specific limits on the amount of time you drive your truck and how many total hours you can work
    before you are no longer permitted to drive a commercial motor vehicle. You must follow three
    maximum duty limits at all times. They are the 14-hour “driving window” limit, 11-hour driving
    limit, and 60-hour/7-day and 70-hour/8-day duty limits

    • @egon4732
      @egon4732 6 лет назад +2

      This window is usually thought of as a “daily” limit even though it is not based on a 24-hour period. You are allowed a period of 14 consecutive hours in which to drive up to 11 hours after being off duty for 10 or more consecutive hours. The 14-consecutive-hour driving window begins when you start any kind of work.

    • @TheUserid82
      @TheUserid82 6 лет назад +3

      Drivers of commercial trucks over a size have a number of hours they can work before a mandatory rest that they are not allowed to move the truck even if they drop the trailer. Basically that time starts when you start and when it runs out you are stuck where ever you are till the rest period is over.
      So drivers that seem to be in a hurry when you are taking time unloading are nearing the end of there hours and want to get somewhere safe.

      Richard Cline
      The 14-hour clock continues to run once you start your day. That's been true ever since paper log books began.
      Doesn't matter if you're sitting or not 14 hours from the time you start your day and you need to end your day
      The 11-hour driving time does pause while you are not driving.
      I'm not sure I understand why the driver could not use the safe haven rule to drive the truck to the truck stop himself. last I heard you could do that if a shipper or receiver refused to allow you to sit on the property.

      So Duncan MacKenzie you prefer to have zombie drivers on the road in big rigs - tired beyond the limits of human endurance in search of the almighty $$$$$$$$$$$$. Hours of Service apply to all forms of commercial transportation - trucks - buses - trains - air carriers - marine carriers. E-Logs have eliminated the 'creative writing' that often took place with paper logs.

    • @wildturkey5838
      @wildturkey5838 5 лет назад +8

      Yes, eliminating the zombie drivers is a good thing, but they've gone a little too far. I was headed for Dallas from Louisville in my pickup one time and got caught in an ice storm. About 2am I came up on a mile long line of semi's parked on the side of the road because they were out of time. When there is no "common sense" the rules can cause more problems than they solve.

      peter smith, to many legal problems with someone coming to drive truck.. I don't know if Ron would say the same thing. But me as a driver I am cover by the company so I can hope in any truck they have and I am cover under their insurance. Unless their is a neither driver that work for the same company me. They are not cover.. Ron is cover his company long as he is recovering or tow a truck he can move it. He is not cover by driving the truck to a safe haven.. Big problem come in what if the driver get to where he is delivering an the customer void the hole load because of damage. The driver is going to say he didn't Ron did it when he took the truck to a safe haven. Driver is going to cover his butt.. So in say long as Ron is tow the truck.. His company insurance will cover all damage to both vehicle plus him and one extra people being in the can with him.

      You have to understand the companies insurance liability. Say your on the way to a safe haven, driving as careful as possible. A car blows a stop sign and you t bone them. You are automatically guilty. Out of hours- truck should not be on any public road. A lawyer and jury would eat you and your company up in court. I know this sucks, but just the way it is.

    A professional driver is only allowed to drive 11 hours per day and during that time has to take a 30 minute break. His or Her duty day can only be 14 hours at which time the driver MUST go off duty for a minimum of 10 hours. If they have a sleeper on the truck, the can log sleeper berth time instead of off duty.

      Can Not park on side of road or in many business lots for more than a few hours let alone enough to get the reset time, thus why those who time out on the run have to call in a relief driver to move the rig to a rest area or truck stop or get it towed as such in this case they went with.

    • @Joshua79C

      They can, just as long as their is time left and note it as on duty (not driving) line of the log, from final location to a reset location like a truck stop for the reset time.

    • @exilfromsanity

      I drove over the road for 30+ years. I once signed a tow bill for $500 for a tow of 10 or12 miles. The turbocharger blew up.
      I imagine U S Express has electronic logs which automatically sense when the truck is driven and would put the driver "on duty, driving" and the driver would get in trouble for a log book violation if he went over hours, with a paper log he could just fudge it . The trucking company has to keep those logs, both paper and electronic for (I believe) 180 days.The DOT periodically checks those logs and notes the number and types of violations you don't want too many. As a driver you often lose your safety bonus for a log violation, this can be up to several hundred dollars per quarter depending on company policy.

      Subway Travels with my company (Prime) you can, and I'm fairly certain the law does allow wiggle room to get somewhere safe, but apparently some companies don't allow that, US Express being one... this is the first time I've ever heard of someone needing to be towed because of HOS

    @roadkill5333 6 лет назад +13

    Hahahahahaha!! The irony!!! He was out of hours!! It took you more than an hour to move it!! Probably a couple thou to do all of that!! And guess who pays for it!! Not the shipper! Not the trucking company!! Not the tow man!! The end consumer pays for it!!
    Ron, nice job backing that rig in!! I know it wasn't difficult, but not that many can do it!! EVEN TRUCKERS!!

    • @Joshua79C
      @Joshua79C 6 лет назад +3

      IF the company that owns the truck had any one with common sense, they would think to hire some local driver to go in with a special code to log in and drive their rig to the nearest safe spot for 10 or 34 hours reset and save at least 50% compared to this method.

    • @Brett235
      @Brett235 6 лет назад +4

      Anita Martini That's a flat out like. Elogs are about compliance not safety. If they were about safety the dot would have mandated them years ago. More wrecks have occurred in the last two years than in the previous 10, look it up. Elogs are unsafe period.

    • @CB-lh8gw
      @CB-lh8gw 6 лет назад

      Hollow Point If elogs are causing any accidents then it's actually the drivers fault. All they do is log. They aren't in control of the truck. The driver needs to plan his day before he even starts the truck. Don't run until you have 20 minutes left unless you are positive you'll have a parking spot available. Don't speed to try to make it, park somewhere closer instead.
      This should all be second nature to drivers, but instead they're too focused on the. money. Safety isn't a priority anymore and being forced to drive legally should not force a driver to drive recklessly. If it does then just park it. Hand over the keys and go work at McDonald's. Because you obviously don't belong here if you can't handle the rules.

    • @billygoatgruff25
      @billygoatgruff25 6 лет назад +1

      visp her That's all well and good until (as I'm assuming happened to this driver) a shipper hangs you out for several hours and runs your clock out. Then they say "You can't park on our lot. Get out of here." You are then forced to drive in violation. Or do what this company did and call a wrecker.

      I would hope as an emergency vehicle, he shouldn't have to follow such a dumb DOT regulation. But maybe since there can be multiple operators of the same tow rig, he could just swap if that were the case. I'd like an official answer to this as well.

    • @DaMisfitz
      @DaMisfitz 6 лет назад +1

      Federal regulations state that if he operates within 100 mile radius of home base, he doesnt have to follow the 11 hour drive time rules. Ron would have 14 hrs a day to work with 1 day of 16 hr work day as long as he has 10 hrs consecutive off duty between shifts. Most he can work is 60/70hrs in a 7/8 days with a 34 hr consecutive off duty to reset those hours for the week. Feds make it a pain to explain b7t thats a simple version. Been driving for 11 yrs and they change things yearly sometimes.

    • @RonPratt
      @RonPratt  6 лет назад +4

      No Missouri wrecker operators do not have to follow a log book when operating at emergency capacity. God bless.

    • @RonPratt
      @RonPratt  6 лет назад +5

      As long as we are in Missouri, we are considered Emergency Vehicles and are exempt from Hours Of Service in most situations. We are also exempt from height, weight, and length restrictions. We are close to several other states, so if we go outside of Missouri there are several factors. First, we are covered by the 100 air mile rule by FEDERAL regulations. I have had this questioned at an out-of-state scale house. When asked to see my log book I simply stated that I wasn't running one because I was within the 100 air mile rule. The officer didn't agree, called me in the "shack", made a phone call, then told me I was free to go.....I assume he was informed that I was correct. Beyond the 100 air miles, when running outside of Missouri, we have to abide by the same regulations as every other truck on the road, including the HOS. Hope this explains things. Sorry for the delayed response. It has been very busy recently. It is also difficult to keep up with the volume of comments......not that I'm complaining. Thanks for watching and God bless.
