Shame I dont have Mortarion! He costs a whole Mortarion, while new products cost at least 2 Mortarions. Some of the sisters are half a Mortarian, or if you want a full squad they are again costing a full Mortarion! I am worried the Orks are going to set me back 3 Mortarions.
You can find models at 2/3 the price on elementgames and waylandgames , and probably other shops. Saved me many Mortarions, while collecting my Custodes.
@@azir64 I use my lovely local discount retailer griffengaming who are cheaper than Wayland, but still A mortarian is a Mortarian and GW keep pushing up prices so soon we will have to save up our Mortarians to buy that one model each decade :D
Just finished following your tutorial. What a journey! Thanks for inspiring me to paint Morty, he's been sitting there unpainted for awhile... Now for him to die on the second battle round ;)
@@Warhipster I always figured Mortarion should be somewhat of a mix with the Death Guard colors and Pallid Hand honestly as he is considered sentimental by Typhus if I recall look forward to the Traditional when it happens.
@@Warhipster I'd love to see the green armour one! I'm about to start my Morty with this vid, just swapping the white bone armour for Militarum Green and following the rest of the guide as it is.
Until recently they were all I used and have done for years. I've got a set of Artis Opus Series S brushes, though the majority of the time I use Citadel brushes and Citadel STC brushes.
Wow, there’s a first for everything I suppose. Artist Opus are fantastic in my opinion. I take of mine and they’ve last a loooong time. I painted a lot during the pandemic (3 2000 point armies and some other bits and bobs) and my AO #2 brush still holds it point wonderfully.
The model looks more than amazing - and none of the details lost! Truly magnificent 🤩 Do you plan on doing a guide in Magnus and Angron (when he's released)? 🤭
Hi Warhipster, your style of painting and using contrast paints and also your channel are amazing. I'm looking forward to see your comming Tutorials. Question: How do you know what colours work at best, only experience or do you make test-models first? Or both? Would it possible maybe, to make a basics "contrast" tutorial for absolute beginners someday? Best regarts Mark L.
Hi Mark! That’s incredibly kind of you to say so! When it comes to knowing what works best it is a bit of both - I know now which combinations will definitely work well and I’m still experimenting. In this week’s hobby hangout stream I figured out the scheme for my Bloodletters with some help from the chat which was a lot of fun. I’ve got plans for a host of videos on getting started with Contrast, how to apply it and so on and so forth, I just need to find the time for them!
I'm getting this model in a couple of days, but I want to paint him in the box art colors using the contrast line of paints. I imagine that I can use the same techniques you used on his shoulder pads for the rest of his armor, right? Where I'm stumped is which paints to use for his purple hood with blueish tips and what to use as highlights on his red loincloth. Do you have a mini painting video on your channel showing the same color schemes for that? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Really, really amazing work done here. I don’t even like Death Guard, but this is amaingly done. You really do great work with the contrast paint. You planning for more with these bigger models, like Magnus and Guilliman?
Thank you First Name! If you’re not a fan of Death Guard I must be doing something right if you’ve enjoyed this. I’ve got a few bigger kits covered now and I’ve plans for plenty more too! Magnus is very much on the list.
I've always wanted to do Mortarion but gave up on it because it was too overwhelming for me to do it even remotely right. Now I'm almost finished with the assembly and I'll start painting tomorrow! Thank you!!! :D This should work for regular Death Guard marines too, right?
Hi Eric! Yes I’m using a bit of water to thin down my base and Layer paints unless otherwise stated that I’m using like Lahmian Medium or something like that!
Nice work! What are your thoughts on using Corax White as a substitute primer? I've used both for contrast paints and I don't really notice much in the way of an appreciable difference on my Death Guard models. I'm not painting Pallid Hand (I'm going with the classic Tainted Sons scheme) but it wouldn't surprise me if the same held true for other color schemes.
I tend to prefer Grey Seer and Wraithbone as I can more reliably get a smooth base coat out of them, though I have used Corax White for some brighter paint jobs. There's definitely a lot of scope to it, as you can brighten things up even more with it.
Amazing work with the contrast paints, I never get it to look that good! Any tips or tricks on that? Like using mixed contrasts or one above the other, I just never thought of that. Tried skeleton horde for my pallid hand and the outcome was horrendous, just was too much brown on flat surfaces and now I see you thinning it 6:1. Any more of that?
Thank you Matthias! I suppose it all depends on what you're wanting to do. Thinning the Contrast paints gives you a chance to build up the colour more steadily, so if you don't want to go in with a darker colour it might well be the way forward for you.
If you don’t mind me asking, how much did that commission cost excluding the cost of the model ? As I’d love to start a deathguard army with morty as centre piece so would be interested.
If you were to paint the smoke areas green instead of blue what colors would you use from brightest to the faded? I've thought about Tesseract Glow into Warp lighting but can't really think of a third green to blend into.
Ork Flesh is probably the one down from Warp Lightning but I would almost go for a Thin Warp Lightning like 3:1 Contrast Medium:Warp Lightning, followed by Warp Lightning on it's own and then finally Ork Flesh. Work testing on something first though! Tesseract Glow might be too glowy for the smoke.
Really amazing video! This was super helpful and pretty much exactly how I wanted to paint my own Mortarion. When you're tackling big projects like this how do you come up with the colour schemes and ratios of paint mixes? Do you do test models or are you just experienced enough to know what works well together?
For me it’s less a case of separation anxiety and more a case of worrying that they’ll make it there in one piece! Even with packing everything as best I can it’s always a concern. I’ve delivered more than one job myself rather than trust shipping.

Thanks Kerath! I’m really pleased with how he’s turned out. I think Pallid Hand may be my favourites too.
One of the best models GW has made....as mentioned, love your work with contrasts...AMAZING!
Thank you so much! It’s an absolutely stunning model and it still amazes me even after a couple of years.
This is so flipping cool, it's really nice to see Mortarion in something different to what he's usually painted in.
Cheers buddy! I really enjoyed painting him in this scheme, it was a nice break from the ‘classic’ scheme.
Amazing. It looks very similar to his pre-heresy armor, and I love it.
Thank you! The Pallid Hand definitely have that feel to them and I love it too!
Stunning ! Hadn't seen a pallid mortarion and seeing you paint it is an absolute treat.
