Sounds like crocodile tears over Buyer's Remorse for not doing one's due diligence on inspecting it thoroughly BEFORE buying it sight unseen. No sympathy for your failure in getting suckered. I bought my 1999 Chinook Concourse XL in 2008 (after 2+ yrs of searching and inspecting) for $13,500. Still going strong today. Recently passed smog once again with flying colors.
Sad for you and the RV. I just tried to buy a 22 year old RV however it fell through when seller just went screwy on me. Meantime still looking. Came across your video today and hard to say I actually enjoyed it...I mean this poor RV and so glad you weren't injured. I was rear ended 2X's living in Fort Collins CO. Once pushed my back end including gas tank in six inches. After that always smelled gas fumes in the trunk. Never in the main car though. A tiny Civic brandnew hit me and I suspect was a total loss. The second time a classic Jeep slammed same rear end. It's amazing what a little rear ending can do. Meantime I think perhaps you over paid at 24K after finding it was a junked-rehab. I hope you find your meant to be Van soon. From listening to you it's clear you will take TLC of her.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah it was crazy how much damage it was. Luckily the insurance did pay for it all. I've bought two vehicles since and some videos on those coming soon - subscribe if you're interested!
Chris, so sorry to hear about the accident. I have a 2001 Chinook and modified it for Overland Adventure travel. These are great platforms and hopefully you can find another one to build out.
I'm sorry that this happened to you. I'm looking into buying a Chinook myself. I'd be devastated in your situation. You seem to be maintaining composure rather well all things considered.
To bad that happened, was a pretty nice RV. Every time I take mine out I have a slight worry about someone hitting me and the damage it would cause . People drive crazy where I live . Glad you got a good settlement.
Oh my goodness I am so sorry . We just got our Chinook recently and there’s a lot of little things wrong with it so I was definitely sympathizing with you there but I’m devastated to hear that it was totaled.
Man this is so heartbreaking. So sorry your Chinook dream became a nightmare.I full time in a 2002 Chinook Baja and it is an absolute dream come true. I hope you can get one someday. If you decide to part it out I may be interested in some things like the spice rack cabinet and maybe the table. Bob Wells did a video of my Baja on his RUclips channel. You can see that mine also doesn’t have the l-shaped kitchen counter, and I don’t have the spice cabinet.
Between some strong duct tape, some caulk, and some paint from home depot, I'd rig that up and ride. Especially after spending $24,000. Use screws to tighten down anything that's loose. As long as the engine and drive train are good, you got you something. That's not enough damage to scrap the truck.
that is a shame. i do feel for you. i have a 2000 also and it was a fixer upper when i first got it. have it set up pretty nice now. my wife and i truly enjoy ours. 30k repair seems excessive. would be labor intensive to restore but since it drives well and has a good engine and tranny it may be worth it to the right person. good luck with your next rv
with that much into it... I guess your only choice is take the money and buy another... but any hand person is going to fix it... fiberglass is easy. Maybe hard to make it beautiful, but easy to make it whole and workable.
Watched both full adds and video, if everyone does this on the video, homie G can make enough from YT maybe to help. Sorry for the bad luck, but things happen for a reason brother
Damn. That's heartbreaking. I just have to know, because of how calm you seem through it all, was there ever a time during this that you just yelled as loud as you could?
Haha, totally. Probably a few weeks into phone calls with the insurance company after this video was shot.... that was honestly the worst part. Though I was pretty bummed when it happened, less than 36 hours after buying it. The drive from Missouri to Denver was not a happy one.
@@ChristopherIves Yeah man, both Zoë and I had our hands over our mouths for most of this video. Once you got to showing the structural damage inside, I knew that was all she wrote. And We're in Boulder, so it hurt even more that you're a fellow Coloradan. Good luck man, we'll follow along.
Sir....I know you are very disappointed but you have an AMAZING foundation to build on!! She has tremendous potential....hope she works out for you and you don't give up...best...
I was excited for the foundation but with all the shock damage and fiberglass issues, the cost to bring it back would have been more than it's worth. The insurance did end up making me an offer that was a good deal. Subscribe for the next video and i reveal the next vehicle i bought to replace it!
I'm more surprised this young man wonders why there is a sink in the wet bath 🛁 and in the kitchen! Wash your hands in the kitchen sink after a poo? 💩 Shave in the kitchen sink? I love the Chinook Wetbaths. Able to squeeze everything into a small space. I weigh 270 and can use it quite comfortably! ✌🏳️🌈✌
I've lived nomadically in vehicles and out of backpacks for over a decade and never had a sink of any size. So to me, it excessive to have two sinks within 4 feet of each other. I'd gladly use the kitchen sink for all things and have more space in a shower stall, but that's my preference - and why I was surprised.
If it was just the door, I probably would have kept it. The big cracks in fiberglass and bathroom damage are the big reasons I was ok seeing it taken by insurance.
Totaling a car/truck/rv is an insurance company's scam to avoid paying higher costs for repairs. If its totaled they only pay out the blue book value. They wanted to pay my 1200.00 for my Nissan but I took it to a lawyer and got 5500.00 and kept the Nissan.
Chris did it get wrote off? If you still have it and its road worthy/certified I would be interested in giving the project a go? I was living in mine for 3 yrs and had an engine fire 3wks ago....Mine got wrote off which means they are gonna come and take it (I'm living in it still) and they didn't give me near enough to buy another one...fingers crossed!
Cheapest ? How much ? Never mind, I have an admire relationship with the original Chinook’s RV’s, so I couldn’t see the whole video describing the damages. The best of luck, I wish you well.
All easy and typical problems to fix on a used older motorhome, then you got rear ended and threw it away. Have it totaled get 24k from the insurance and buy it back for 500 to 1,000 bucks and fix it yourself with $23,500 to spend.
The damage estimate was over $30k all said and done. I did let them total it but I have no desire to buy it back - the accident basically slightly broke 100 different things and cracked the fiberglass shell. If had a shop, maybe, but It's beyond driveway work. Stay tuned for my new project!
It's been two years? Did Chris die in this Chinook? Maybe the heater CO2 detector didn't work? Maybe a tire fell off and he is in a ditch. We may never know.
I'm curious as to how insurance covers something that old. Do they simply pay you the $24k or did they value it higher or lower than what you paid...and that's what you got?
I think for those it's around 6-8k pounds max. It's essentially the same as an F-350 Dually pickup. They did make diesel models that I believe can pull a bit more.
Cheapest? My 1990 was 450 but ... it didn't drive . now I've got a new motor and trans and doing a bunch ... I got into it about 11 minutes and don't know if you know but he has something in his nose ... strange. I wonder where that originated.
I mention it at the end: $24k in Oct of 2021. It was a good deal as prices have skyrocketed but as you can see this one did have a load of problems. Subscribe if you wanna see the next video about it!
looks like money trap, you might trade it in and get a good one now cheap the way things are going you see them all over the place cheap, people getting read of them

@@captlarry-3525 There was never a question of if I personally could fix it. It's a financial and time decision to decide if it's worth it to do custom repairs and wait for insurance to dance around parts lists, OR, just let insurance total it, collect the value and go buy one that's already in full working order. The later sounded most reasonable to me.
