You are a beast. You gave me the confidence to shave quickly with a super-sharp straight razor, and now you have me using safety razors as well. Customer for life.
I use the Futur and I love it. But it requires a lot of attention because of its aggressiveness, so no adventurous maneuvers. I'd say for sensitive skin the dial should never exceed the 1 setting. The weight is helpful, but also carries an increased danger of cuts if anything goes wrong (like slipping etc).
Thank you for this very informative video. Used it this morning for the third time using your method for the first time. Perfect results with my Merkur Futur.
I have been watching your content for awhile now. Good stuff ! 12 years ago or so I purchased the satin Futur from you and have been using it ever since. My sons 18th birthday is coming up soon and I will be putting in an Oder tonight for a gold one ! Keep up the great shaves !
Great video and series Geo! Really enjoying these. I use this exact combo often. The Proraso brush has been my go-to since I bought it from you over ten years ago! The Col. Conk Bay Rum has been a regular for me since finding it at a local knife shop 12 years ago. The smell is addicting and it works great. Very slick! The Futur is always great to use. Thanks for the video!
The shaves just keep getting better with my Futur. Last two shaves were the smoothest, closest shaves I can recall ever getting. Used two different Personna blades, USA and German, on setting 2.5.
The Futur is a beast of a razor, I rarely use it above a 3-4 setting usually with a green Astra blade and I get a wonderful shave. I did once try it on a 6 setting with a Feather blade got an exceptionally close shave but my whole face was stinging. Excellent razor none of my other razor gives me sucha close shave but you're right let the razor do the work
I just received a Futur in satin as a gift. It’s a very smooth efficient razor. I’ve just used setting 1 & 1.5 and for every other day shaves it’s all I need! Nice to have the extra setting when I grow it out a few days. I shave in the shower & as long as u don’t have shave cream on your hands it’s not slippery. The blade change design is great. Even better then TTO.
I have both the Futur as well as the 34C. You're right about the heft of this razor and that is one of the reasons I like it so much. I rotate between 7 razors but I rank this one near the top. I also like to develop my lather in a (Shave Nation 👍) bowl. Cheers from Oregon.
I own both a 34C and a Progress. Both possibly 2 of the most iconic, classic, DE razors still out there. I rarely use the 34C these days, just too mild, i would put it at a 2.5-3 on the Progress scale of 1-5. But then i'm a twice a week shaver inc my head, not a daily. Like Geo, i like to go from coarse to mild with a Progress 3 pass shave. 4-3-2.5.
What a coincidence!!!!!! First comment and I just bought a Merkur Futur yesterday!!! The polished gold one - haven't shaved with it yet though but it looks so classy and well made.
Have had my matte finished Futur for about a year. Just used it yesterday. Great razor but be careful. They don't call it the potato peeler for nothing !
@@michaelhunyadi5087 Yes, I'm aware! 😂 Thank you for caring about my safety! 🙂 Luckily I will start straight with a lot of growth (2 weeks plus!) so I can take it sort of to the limits without worrying too much.
@@michaelhunyadi5087 Well, that went better than I expected!!!! The one-month beardage I had went down like it was just glued or something!!! I had to play with the settings mid-shave so I got a few cuts here and there and a lot of razor burn, mainly because I used a bad soap so that made things way worse but nevertheless it was a very enjoyable experience - I felt like I had the royal treatment. The slickness of the finish is incredible - it just glides, unlike my Rockwell 6S Matt Stainless which is almost like running sandpaper over my skin even if the lather is the slickest. Finally, the weight of it is so heavy compared to other razors (of lesser quality I might add) BUT it's PERFECTLY balanced no matter how you choose to hold it, plus, it helps you not apply extra, unnecessary pressure.
I recommend the rubber grip handle which I purchased on your recommendation! No more paying three dollars for throwaway razors oh buy blades for $.20 apiece
I have retired my Merkur 34C since the plating is coming up located under the top cap. I have a Merkur Futur arriving in a couple days, this video was informative on what to expect. Thumbs up!
@@bronsonstrundson313 Yes The Futur is a great razor, it has a blade forward feel but gives a close smooth shave It's very efficient. I enjoy the Futur more than the 34C.
@@bronsonstrundson313 I shave every day and I normally use a Gillette Platinum or Gillette Silver Blue. I also use Treet Carbon Black blades and recently started trying a sample pack Gillette Nacet blades. I don't use the Merkur Futur really any more I have a Blackbird razor as of recently.
Just tried Merkur Futur with German version of Wilkinson Sword blade they are a lot smoother and way sharper than the blade that came with the Futur. I only use it on my neck I use Phillips OneBlade for the rest. I use a a cordless airblower on it to blow off the water.
I get very good results leaving my Futur set on 3. I am used to flipping my blade over after each shave, and that is where I run into problems. Mainly cutting my fingers handling the blade. I have tried putting the blade on the cap first and putting it on the handle first, and I don’t find one method better than the other. Maybe I should just rinse the razor well between shaves and quit fooling around with it between shaves. What do you think?
Geo💈💈 Very nice razor the Futur, efficient even on lower settings IMO, and you're using a Merkur blade which is on the sharper side. Of course everything in shaving is subjective so my opine is a moot point. Great shave and results, thanks. See ya next time. Enjoy!
I own this razor. It scares me. I've never used it over setting 2. Which feels like at least 3 notches above plate 6 on a Rockwell. I understand why it earned the nickname" The Potato Peeler" By far one of the coolest locking razors out there.
well comment is a bit late but no wonder. the futur on setting 1 has a much bigger blade gap than the rockwell on 6. in fact setting 1 on the merkur is more aggressive than 90% of most razors. lets not even talk about setting 6.5 on it 😂
@@samsacre I'm still on setting to and I'm much more mindful of the razor angle. I use a very mild King C blade, hot shower with a good lather. Definitely a razor to take your time and respect. Oil pre shave every time. So far no nicks lately.

Do you think it's accurate to say the 4 position on the Futur is equal to the 34C in aggressiveness?
