Sounds are coming from synths as Yamaha DX7, Roland Jupiter-8 and Juno-106, some sampler sounds from the Fairlight and Emulator 2 and Korg M1, D-50 and many more. Which sounds do you think should be on the list as well? In the case of the "synth brass", lots of other analog synths were used for different songs and hits, like the Oberheim OB-Xa, Elka Synthex, Prophet 5 and more. First out is a variation of the infamous "Orch5" sample from the Fairlight, while the other, at the end, is from the D-50.
PolyMoog - Vox Humana preset. To be fair, Gary Numan pretty much made this sound entirely his own, making it hard for anyone else to use it without being compared with him and his worldwide hit "Cars". But regardless, this soaring PolyMoog preset is absolutely distinctive, unmistakable and iconic.
totally agree with you! legendary gary, legendary song, legendary sound! i am tracking one but the price of a polymoog has raised so much ( anyway like all vintage analog!)
The TX81Z Lately Bass, D-50 Staccato Heaven/Digital Native Dance, DX7 Electric Guitar and M1 Pick Bass also seemed to be used everywhere from ‘87 onward. I personally associate the RD1000 with everything Elton John in the 80s.
DX7 Harmonica on 'What's Love Got to do With it' -Tina Turner, and 'Sara' -Starship. I was gonna include 'I Feel for You' by Chaka Kahn, but turns out that was Stevie Wonder on a melodica. :-)

most of these sounds are packed in any Yamaha keyboard with XG standard since mid nineties even the entry level ones, I discovered it playing with a midi module and It was so fun

My favorite synth sound of all time 2:12 I dunno, its just so incredibly melodic, cut though sound, covers all specters of the scale. So powerful. Van Halen made it immortal with the Öberheimer. Hall & Oates out of touch, Stevie Nicks stand back, to name a few, it’s the perfect sound in my option 😂
Top most iconic sound of the mid-80s to early 90s, that is. There were some pretty iconic sounds before, too. White noise, sample and hold, slow massive filter sweeps, the vocoder, triangle wawe leads with portamento comes to mind. The DX-7 harp sound was used in lots of New Age music of the early 90s, and somewhat later the low-fi, sampled strings started to appear everywhere.
What a trip to memory lane! A sort of for metal heads, Jens Jonhansson ‘ s Lead sound, a PolySix emulation runned on JV1080 then thru JD10 distorsion, amazing! Guys, listen it on latest live Rainbow concerts when it is a solo spot.
Moog! The round, slightly detuned, multi-oscillator (ironically a square wave), solo Moog sound. ELP's Lucky Man introduced synths to many. (Also featured in Heart's Magic Man.) Chick Corea's signature synth sound. Kind of plucky, very expressive, probably also a Moog...
Soundtrack 17 on JX-8P and all similair dreamy chorusy synth pad sounds. Phasing strings (Solina, Logan, Omni etc..). Yamaha CS-serie flute, brass and guitar sounds (yes, mr. Vangelis). To mention some. ;-)
Early 90's piano housemusic will always be in my heart. I get goosebumps when I hear this type of music. For example, "K-Klass - Let me show you" piano starts at 1: 16. Thanks for making this video, so many memories. Subscribed.
The shakuhachi here gives me goosebumps. Sadly, the sample on my keyboard sounds more like a harmonica/piccolo mashup. Also, a blockbuster full of car chases and shootouts comes to mind with the squelch bass. Tubular bells - > Roxette

You can't possibly have listen to what I say in the video or read the video description. "Jump" was done with the Ob-Xa as I clearly state in the video description, I associate the "synth brass" SOUND to the songs I reference. The same with the "acid bass". I have all the facts straight.
Moog Taurus bass pedal sound as used on Don't Stand So Close to Me would be my fav, and so many great bands used the Taurus:- The Police, Rush, Genesis, Pink Floyd. And floor pedals mean I can play keyboards and guitar at the same time. Works for me. Although Andy's Roland guitar synth in Secret Journey is only a gnat's whisker behind.
Interesting situation here, I found myself to preferer mostly digital synths (or digital/analogue hybrids), instead of analogue one, maybe because I grow up on 80's/ 90's music :-D Of course big exception is CS80, as we everybody love Vangelis ;-)
Great examples!! I realized this Tubular bells synthesizer at 5:46 was the Top Gun intro theme instantly! The Terminator theme, (metal hammering one maybe) had this too I think!! I came here to try to find the type of sensational synthesizer used in the beautifully mesmerizing Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 opening 2! It's a lot like the synthesizer in the Yasuke opening "Black Gold" !
The famous sounds that I would add to the list are the following: D50 staccato heaven used by Gary Numan and Rick Astley amongst a few others. D50 native digital dance. Use by a plethora of artists. D50 machine run. Used by Jean Michel Jarre on the opening track of his album revolutions. D50 Fantasia. Sequential circuits prophet 5. Descending bells. Korg M1 universe. Beauty. Magician. Pole. Roland D50 Soundtrack. These are a few examples of Sounds Espen Kraft left out. Espen Kraft my man. Maybe you should do a part 2 video? Pure.
When the harpsichord came out it changed everything and changed music at the time... so did the clavinet when it came out.. and the piano. The difference between that era was only the wealthy got to hear the sounds of the era. In 'recent' times records, tape, radio, etc started fanning out sounds of new instruments (Hawaiian guitar, Rhodes, Hammond B3's)... started marking eras... but then the synth came. Moog then Oberheim, Arp, Sequential, Korg, Roland, Yamaha.. Akai... each bringing new tools and sounds that defined swiftly passing decades. Anyway... LOVED the video.. just discovered your channel and plan to watch more. HUGE fan of history and how technology innovations of each era gave each era it's own unique flavor. Hard to know who you are unless you know where you've been, right? Thanks for educating us!!!
Once you fire up your new U-220, you'll hear a surprisingly faithful version of the Fairlight CMI's "ARR1". I think it sounds great, especially considered it's "re-synthesized" from what was essentially an 8-bit sample!
I know. I had it for several years in the past. Almost all the Roland romplers from that point on had that sound in it. It's far from gritty enough to match the original though, but still nice. ;-)

That DX7 bass patch sounds a lot like the patch used in Oingo Boingo’s Grey Matter also. If I were to add 2, that patch that comes in solo on Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell (has some delay and reverb on it) and also that lead from Doctor Doctor by the Thompson Twins. That was a fun listen, an idea for one, obscure sound effect sounds on popular tunes. Example the falling trill type sound that kicks in with the sax on Foreigner’s Urgent.
Some great sounds to take us all back to better days. Love your presentation and explanation of each sound. Wow, you could not be more German if you were eating a brat and drinking a beer. I love it.
The band that was above all sampled their own natural sounds and even distorted it into the keyboard. That band was Depeche Mode. They were way ahead of their time. They didn’t use generic keyword sounds. They had multi layers of sounds.

faith no more had a lot of emax II in their music. from their 80's music to early 90's was all emax II. if you look any live concert, music videos, photos etc you will see that roddy always had the same emax II's, a black one and the grey one with all the sounds listed on it's console..
Van Halen’s Jump used a Oberheim OB-Xa, Final Europe’s Final Countdown used a Yamaha TX 816 Rack unit and a Roland Jupiter JX-8P. The Yamaha DX7 was used in various songs of the 80s.
The “sync” sound from Roland’s JX-8P I’m pretty sure was sampled by Korg on the Korg N364 and they named it “busy boy”. I played in a Mexican band in the late 90s and early 2000s. And I used that Korg N364 and the sound “busy boy” for many sonidero songs!!!
I would loved to hear some of the several Prophet 5 sounds that defined the 80s like Thompson twins and psychedelic furs and well everyone from the 80s

Love those old 80's sounds. Especially after leaving the band in the 80's and going into mobile DJing. Boy were those times great. I just wish I kept 1 or 2 of my keyboards. Especially the DX7 though I do miss my Seil cruise and mini wasp. 😭😭

For the tub bells on the DX7, you should’ve just played the key of E. Most American viewers would realize that it’s the Taco Bell sound.

I believe Eric Persing designed that patch sound, as well as the famous Soundtrack on the D50. Also, that type of sound is in the General MIDI Spec.

LOVED the video.. just discovered your channel and plan to watch more. HUGE fan of history and how technology innovations of each era gave each era it's own unique flavor. Once you fire up your new U-220, you'll hear a surprisingly faithful version of the Fairlight CMI's "ARR1". I think it sounds great, especially considered it's "re-synthesized" from what was essentially an 8-bit sample!
I know. I had it for several years in the past. Almost all the Roland romplers from that point on had that sound in it. It's far from gritty enough to match the original though, but still nice. ;-)

That DX7 bass patch sounds a lot like the patch used in Oingo Boingo’s Grey Matter also.
If I were to add 2, that patch that comes in solo on Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell (has some delay and reverb on it) and also that lead from Doctor Doctor by the Thompson Twins.
That was a fun listen, an idea for one, obscure sound effect sounds on popular tunes. Example the falling trill type sound that kicks in with the sax on Foreigner’s Urgent.
If I could afford to spend 2 weeks of making for each video I could do a lot of cool stuff. But I can't. ;-) Cheers

The band that was above all sampled their own natural sounds and even distorted it into the keyboard. That band was Depeche Mode. They were way ahead of their time. They didn’t use generic keyword sounds. They had multi layers of sounds.
This is one of the most pleasant sounds in world!!

Foreigner albums of the mid 80's were full of Roland D50 famous sounds. 'Soundtrack' and 'Stacatto Heaven' come to mind.
faith no more had a lot of emax II in their music. from their 80's music to early 90's was all emax II. if you look any live concert, music videos, photos etc you will see that roddy always had the same emax II's, a black one and the grey one with all the sounds listed on it's console..
Van Halen’s Jump used a Oberheim OB-Xa, Final Europe’s Final Countdown used a Yamaha TX 816 Rack unit and a Roland Jupiter JX-8P. The Yamaha DX7 was used in various songs of the 80s.

That sync sound always makes me think of Daft Punk.
The “sync” sound from Roland’s JX-8P I’m pretty sure was sampled by Korg on the Korg N364 and they named it “busy boy”. I played in a Mexican band in the late 90s and early 2000s. And I used that Korg N364 and the sound “busy boy” for many sonidero songs!!!
Now a challenge: make a song that has all those sounds :)

I remember how the D-50 was the first synth to offer nearly exact recreations of most of those sounds, in one single package.

Boy were those times great. I just wish I kept 1 or 2 of my keyboards. Especially the DX7 though I do miss my Seil cruise and mini wasp. 😭😭
