I am sure he wouldn’t remember me, but it was my great pleasure to do some playing at Berklee College of music with Scott just a few short decades ago. Already he had a tremendous ear, and a great versatility in many styles from Lester Young/Coleman Hawkins to Ascension style avant-garde and beyond. Mostly he played tenor, but I think his interest in more rare Woodwinds was already incorporated into his approach. For example, I have heard him on C melody sax, which the way he plays, makes a strong case for a true distinction between the C melody and a tenor or an alto.
I have a fascination with the tenor & bass tárogató, and I would love to hear what a musician like Scott could do with such an ax. (Similarly, the whole Sarrusophone family, double reed or adapted for single reed, doesn’t get NEARLY enough love!)
Where was I? I got distracted. Scott’s phrasing, his intonation, his understatement and use of silence mark him as one of the finest musicians any of us have ever heard.
Are we all agreed?
There are two things that i think make a great saxophone player: they need to be able to both impress and express. And i have yet to see another saxophonist be able to do such an incredible task like that on the bass sax. Scott has won my heart with this one video.
Micheal wilbur is decent at it if you can hear him play jazz on a bass sax, thats very rare though
Dear Lord, you had me at the first bar with that bass sax tone. Wonderful. Thank you!
The drummer has me dying. His reactions at 5:15 are so good 😂
Magnificent!
His hat seems to be made from old reeds!
It is! He talks about it in the full performance video.
Yes, I made it for the cover shot of my "Tenormore" album. It's made from old reeds I've played on through many years.
@@scottrobinson2060 wow thats gotta be one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.
You have an amazing tone btw it was a pleasure listening to you play!
Now THAT's impressive - to get a robust & clear singing tone from that bass sax! And of course, Emmet Cohen is one of my favorite piano players.
Finally somebody who plays the Bass Sax also all the way to its lowest register and not only a bigger Bari Sax
I’m extra impressed that he’s using a neck strap instead of a stand for that beast. A Bari is heavy enough.
not even a shoulder strap, really just a straight up neck strap. Meanwhile, my neck is hurting with a neck strap just for the alto😅
That was the first thing I thought of. I've played a bass sax, and they are heavy!
Must have titanium cervical !
Its not a Bari its a bass sax
@@laurosena2829 You can’t read … I know it’s a bass…I said a bari is heavy enough. Look at my photo I’m a saxophonist.
Wow! One of the most astoundingly beautiful renditions of this song that I've ever heard! And forget the cowbell -- we need more bass sax! Bravo, gentlemen!
Scott Robinson is one hell of a musician. Actually making the bass saxophone sound like a real instrument rather than a joke. He's the real deal.
One correction: Bass sax is never a joke its beautiful and I wish more people would play it😁
Fun fact, the bass sax was the first saxophone created
@@FNBRVoltsit was the first sax adolf made
To quote Dewey Redmond, "If I got tone and you got technique, I win." Scott Robinson get everything.
scott robinson deserves all the love in the world!!
Meeting Scott was an absolute pleasure. He's truly a kind and unique soul. His love and reverence for music are on a level beyond most.
Been following Scott R for years...as a member of Toshiko Akiyoshi big band and on his many of his own albums including a C Melody sax sojourn he did years ago. He is a treasure and his most recent CD is great. Such a musician.
Hahaha… brilliant, I haven’t smiled so much in a long time…
And that juicy bass sax -like dark chocolate…
🙏👏🙏👏🙏
Seeing all your reactions to each others playing really made me happy, looks like so much fun. Awesome playing.
One of the best tunes ever written but so rarely paid the respect it deserves. Monk did and so do Cohen & Co.
Just 100% totally INCREDIBLE. Scott Robinson is a Saxophone Genius (every type 🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷 known to man *AND SOME NOT KNOWN TO MAN😁* - and practically every instrument too). But his BASS SAX work is Mesmerizing. 🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷👏👏👏
What a beautiful take on a sublime standard.Scott is in full control of that beast.Very expressive playing by all.
that sax tone is so *sweet*!
the whole jam was on fire beginning to end
Great to hear a bass sax sound so good. Has anyone seen the film of Attilio Berni playing the gigantic J'Elle Steiner sub-contrabass sax that is part of his huge collection of saxophones ? It is about nine feet tall and sounds like a foghorn really but is great fun. Berni also has the tiniest sax in the world in his collection too and makes it sound surprisingly good for such a high-pitched instrument.
Woooooowwwwwwwwwwwww
Listen non saxophonist you have no idea how freaking hard this is and hes doing it so effortlessly and playing so melodicly and soft, just wow man im honored to listen to that
Thanks! Love the bass sax (Robinson!) and the way you solo'd Emmet, with the great support of your trio. Love your channel
That was an incredible bass sax interpretation . At first everyone has a smile but that smile quickly disappeared because Scott is so good!
World class playing from Scott Robinson.
I'm always watching this channel from Japan!
Thank you for the wonderful video every time.
I practice and do my best like Emmet Cohen and others!
Instant chills. Oh my god man. Beautiful rendition
This is just Soooooooooo AMAZING. The Inimitable SCOTT ROBINSON. "Like None Other". A SAXOPHONE GENIUS.
so so deeply sweet . . a broke heart lovesick foghorn’s lament . . Thank you!!!!!
I had the opportunity to meet Scott. He sat in at a jam session as a part of the Rochester jazz fest this year, and I also saw his group perform. What a monster of a player. He’s also super nice guy. We talked and he showed me his tenor which he said he played since the mid 70’s as a teenager. Awesome experience
What a great presentation- i never heard a ballad on a bass sax e a beautiful piano solo- way to go
That bass riff at 3:11 is so clean
Emmet played his heart out. Great work by all. Thank you all so much.
I'm melted down... thanks for great playing.
I'm in love with Bass Sax now 😍

Bravissimo. Suonare una ballad in modo talmente espressivo e con uno strumento così difficile ... bravo veramente !

Deep and well delivered!

Incredible ✨✨
Absolutely beautiful.

Extraordinary!
Yes !
Brilliant sax and marvelous piano, too!
Thanks!
Years back, I had an enjoyable 15 minutes trying out a brand new Selmer bass sax in Selmer's store in Charing Cross Road, in one of their little studio rooms. Made a nice change from my usual tenor.
what a nice performance!really enjoy it
Outstanding! Watched this on repeat. Hats off to the whole band!

thus far 😊
Great stuff
Well, that was awfully fun!! Yes sir.
Awesome
That is totally awesome. My bari is big enough. Go dude . That is beautiful.
Absolutely gorgeous 😍
Robinson's definitely an interesting guy:
He has a huge collection of horns- heavy on old silver-plated saxes, even older metal clarinets, and on large sizes of both - all of which he plays very well, and an equally huge collection of loud shirts, all of which he wears regularly and exclusively.
Bravissimo!!!! 🔥👍❤️
The fact that he is using a neck strap is incredible and to play smoothly he has to have a lot of core support and a open neck
do we need a baritone sax? noooo let's go even looooower 😀👍
HELP - SURGEON!!! I can’t remove this smile!!!
Sharp sharp. And nice Brotzman cadenza 👌
Epic.
Really 👍 great
My closet pipes sound like that at night. I sleep so well! 😊
