    I'm a student at Purdue, and we have to give an elevator pitch. This is the only video out of the 10+ I've watched that actually provides the guidance I was looking for. Thank you!

    Thanks for the comment! The first thing you always must ask yourself is who exactly is my audience. Once you are clear about your audience, then you can consider what they would like to hear. That's how you determine what to say in your introduction or for the rest of your presentation. Hope that helps.

  • @CarlKwan
    @CarlKwan  11 лет назад +4

    Thanks for your message and question. You could do something similar to what I teach in the video and add examples of things you've done. Do you have to talk about yourself professionally or personally? How long do you have to speak? You could also tell a story of a struggle you went through professionally or personally and how you overcame it. A cute PPT might be fine, but be sensitive to what your audience would want and what your job is. Your first impression is very important :)
    Good luck!

    In all honesty, as someone who's a native English speaker, this advice is still incredibly helpful. I've been looking for advice on an introduction presentation for the start of my PhD course. While I've done plenty of presentations before, both about a subject in my degree and having to talk about myself when I was in the process of joining the Army, I've never done one like this: 2 slides, one on my background, and one on what I hope to get from my course, and it should be five minutes long. I've been stumped for a week on how to do it, but after watching this, I've got a clear idea on what I want to do and how to do it,
    They say that the best teachers are the ones who can simplify something in a way that everyone can understand it, without losing any of it's effectiveness. I think you've definitely got that gift. Thanks for the help!

  • @CarlKwan
    @CarlKwan  11 лет назад

    Thanks for the comment and question. Yes, you can use the same method. Brainstorm ideas for the second and third part, as those will be critical for you to persuade someone to invest money.
    Good luck!

    Thanks for your question. Everybody gets nervous. It's completely normal. You need to practice until it feels like you're telling your friends a story. It's not easy and it takes time. Do some breathing exercises beforehand. Try to practice with a video camera. Think about the real reason why you're nervous. Sometimes it's from childhood fears or rejection. Most of all, prepare well and do your best. Then get feedback and do it better each time.
    Good luck!

  • @CarlKwan
    @CarlKwan  11 лет назад +1

    Thanks for your comment. Maybe you're too worried about sounding perfect, instead of just getting your message across. Remember also that when communicating an idea, you've had lots of time to think about it but your listeners will be hearing it for the first time. You have to speak to get their interest, to use language and explain like you're talking to a 10 year old, and don't assume they just "get it."
    Hope that helps :)

  • @CarlKwan

    All the way through 2020, so simple, yet so impactful! The intro I was using before wasn't as direct and to the point. 3 simple steps just changed my life and the way I introduce myself in presentations. This may be easy for some, but was never easy for me because I don't like to talk about myself. Thank you so very much for sharing this awesome information with the world!

    Thank you! And I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. When I was in high school, what helped was being funny and doing something unexpected. You need to break up your speech/presentation to include something surprising. It should either make them laugh or be scared. You should do this regularly throughout the presentation, but you should do one shortly after you start to get their attention.
    Good luck!

    Thanks for the question. Are you talking about school reports? What level of school? What subject?
    A presentation for school is no different than any other: Understand what your audience (and teacher) wants to hear, provide main points that cover what they want to hear, then provide evidence to support what you said. Summarize what you said to end it.
    Let me know if there's something more specific.

    Thanks for your message. First, prepare well in advance and know your topic inside out. Also, be sure your topic fits with what the audience would want to hear. Next, practice so you can give the presentation without any visual aids. And remember it's actually not true that you've never spoken in front of people in your life... you've done it countless times with family, friends and colleagues. Your presentation should be as natural as those experiences you've already had. Good luck.

    I am a recent MBA graduate of Strayer University. My specialty is in cost accounting. I help mangers make production decisions through forecasting and budgeting. Even if they have never worked with a budget or forecast before or if they absolutely hate the budgeting and forecasting process, I can show managers how to use their reports to save the company money and increase productivity.

    @do0oditta555 I'm so sorry I didn't reply sooner. The below suggestion is a good one. If you want to try something different, tell them something unique about yourself after the usual stuff related to the topic you're presenting on. For example, if you're presenting about a business topic, perhaps say something about your experience as a child selling lemonade and to link it to how you're studying business now. Hope that helps.

    Hi Carl! In order to get through the last step of the internship interview, I must make a powerpoint about myself and present it. Presenting is actually one of my biggest fears and I get super nervous when I stand in front of groups of people. Your video helped calm parts of my tension because I was struggling with how long my introduction should be and if I should give the dull opening starting with my major, current employment, etc. Although I have a pretty funny story that fits in the criteria to prove that I am a great team player and fit for the role, I am still quite nervous. • @CarlKwan
      @CarlKwan  10 лет назад +2

      Just a suggestion, but try telling them what you're looking to accomplish, what your goal is, something like that. They see so many job applicants, it can be boring for them. So try to get their attention with your goals/ambitions and then be prepared to explain how you will accomplish that. Good luck.

    Hi, very good video, thank you. I will have an interview with different dept in the same company, and part of it to do presentation for 15 minutes about a subject my choice. So before the presentation, I want to introduce myself. The interviewers know my dept and what I do. So how would I Introduce myself? By the way I work now as a help desk specialist (day) and teach courses (evening) within the same organization. So I am think to introduce myself before I start my presentation as following: "Hello my name is AAA, I work for the help desk of the IT dept. and also teach evening courses with XYZ dept." is that good introduction? Thank you so much.

    What would be your opinion be on calling an employer a day before the interview to confirm date and time/place? Thank you for any info.

    • @CarlKwan
      @CarlKwan  8 лет назад

      +Rifle Twist I think it depends on when the interview was originally scheduled. If it was scheduled more than a week ago, then sure, it's a good idea to call to confirm. Just don't sound worried when you call. Be confident. You never know who the person might be that takes your call. Good luck!

    No specific videos but it's not any different than any other type of presentation. The only thing I'd recommend is to make it somewhat fun and entertaining because students get bored easily. Good luck.

    Hi Carl, I'm an Italian student and I'll have to do an oral exam of English within a few days. It consists initially on a brief presentation of yourself. So, I'd like to get advice on what are the most important points I should focus on as I don't have a company. thanks

    Hello Mr Carl, please how could introduce my self in University presentation?
    Because, here you gave an example of someone working in a company.

      +mubarak gidado umar It's basically the same thing. You can replace the company parts with things about school and being a student.

    hi awesome video. Which book or website you colud suggest for academic presentation?

    • @CarlKwan
      @CarlKwan  9 лет назад

      Terlan Aliyeva Thanks. The basic principles for a presentation are not that different. Knowing your audience, having a clear goal, keeping your audience's attention, etc, apply to all presentations. For academic presentations, be sure that you provide sufficient evidence/examples to back up what you say. Good luck!

It's surely going to help my students, who do face interviews once they complete my emarketeducation. digital marketing training institute program, here in Bangalore India. I've shared this video link with my student to refer and practise the same before attending an interview.

      Thanks for the kind words and question. For "how to" always start with the problem that needs solving and the goal or desired result. Good luck!
